Slow week or extremely successful remaster? Probably a mixture of both: Final Fantasy XII’s excellent PlayStation 4 re-release has topped the UK sales charts, beating out Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Overwatch, and Grand Theft Auto V. Elsewhere, big sales on sites like Amazon brought the likes of WipEout Omega Collection, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Injustice 2 back into the fold.
A lack of new releases means there’s not much else to shout about this week – as is likely to remain the case while the summer drags on. In truth, the top ten’s probably going to stay pretty static until Uncharted: The Lost Legacy launches in late August.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 15th July, 2017
- Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
- Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
- Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
- Overwatch
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Forza Horizon 3
- Minecraft: Xbox Edition
- WipEout Omega Collection
- Horizon: Zero Dawn
- Injustice 2

Ff12, crash trilogy, wipeout, and horizon, this is a good month for ps exclusives
Already bought the steelcase version of ff12, too bad playasia shipping times is slow (2 weeks)
Four PS4 exclusives in the top ten and the fourth to top the charts within the last month, wow.
A bit of both indeed, funny that FF, crash and Wipeout are all remasters too.
I hope somewhere developers are taking notice - we like these types of games!!
Splatoon 2 lands Friday but thats going under the radar. Itll probably sell worse than the original just on install base.
Number 2 at most maybe 2 weeks in the charts after that and then gone.
@adf86 Yeah, it's been a good summer.
@BLP_Software I forgot about Splatoon 2. That should comfortably top.
@get2sammyb I dont think it will.
It has less potential users and its been labelled as not fresh enough to warrant it as a sequel. Plus it doesnt feel as heavily pushed and what Ive been seeing indicates that most people played the first and dont wabt anymore. A had their fill kind of thing.
Plus, the fact you forgot says it all. Gamers everywhere knew Splatoon was coming. But the sequel? Quiet release. As I said, 2 at most then itll fall hard.
But then again MK8D took top somehow.
@BLP_Software I predict the number 1 spot for Splatoon 2. The only thing making me doubtful is how close the ARMS release was. Even with the smaller userbase, Switch owners seem to be a formidable force!
Wow. I knew there was some demand for the FF12 Remaster, but this is surprising.
@Shellcore Look at the top 10. Do you see any Switch games there? There's your "formidable force".
@Mahe There's been no switch games of note released recently. I personally believe there are plenty of switch owners keen to pick up any quality new release. I may end up with egg on my face, but IMO anyone who thinks Splatoon 2 won't be number 1 next week is wrong.
@kyleforrester87 "There's been no switch games of note released recently."
That tells it all really.
If there's a really long drought and then the Switch fans buy the only new "big profile" (Nintendo) game that's out, that's not an achievement, that's pathetic. This is the exact same problem Nintendo had with Wii U and Gamecube.
@Mahe Well, sure, that's up for debate as a seperate issue.. I do agree they need more software.
@BLP_Software The thing is there's nothing else coming out, so it will definitely top even if the numbers are mediocre. I can't imagine Final Fantasy XII did all that well this week TBH.
@kyleforrester87 I genuinrly dont think it will in the UK.
There are less Switch units here now than there were in 2015 for Wii U. Thats just expected. But add to the fact Splatoon 2 has just kind of fallen by the wayside, there isnt as much buzz or word of mouth despite 2 demos for it.
And I expect many of the average none Nintendo Direct watching public to just treat it like a 1.5 like many people did prior to the Direct that showed new stuff and how things changed.
Add the lack of Switch stock and youve got a barrier that stops more systems being moved with Splatoon as the first game.
I admire the blockbuster approach with one big thing a month but Splatoon 2 is very B-list in terms of awareness this time around. Just by principle of what it is.
And for those like me who played Splatoon for two years? Where is the incentive?
@Mahe you forgot the Wii. We know how that went too.
If Splatoon 2 just passes over like it is right now, it sets the prospects for the hardware in stone. And it wont be good.
@get2sammyb There was nothing coming out around ARMS. That didnt top either. And that got more of a push.
@Mahe I stand by my prediction, but will graciously accept defeat. Game on!
@BLP_Software We'll see, as sammy says there isn't anything else coming out and something like FF12 will have achieved the vast majority of its numbers on release day. Crash managed to hang about for 2 weeks in quiet period.. I don't see FF12 being able to do the same.
Of course I'll eat my hat if I'm wrong, but I don't think I will be
@kyleforrester87 Nothing else and its viewed as a 1.5 on a system with very low numbers.
FF12 on the other hand is on the PS4. Big difference there just in potential sales alone. Add in its a very established brand riding high right now?
Compare that to Splatoon which started with hype on a very low selling system, which had more sales at that point too, and its current issue of being low key. Weirdly enough I think Splatoon 2 is going under the radar but exactly WHY is any number of reasons.
Im prepared to ingest headwear if it does hit top spot. But this is the UK. Last time it happened was Mario Kart in a literal dead period. Prior to that was 2011. Dont hold your breath ya know.
@BLP_Software It's win win for me, if FF12 stays top we are more likely to get more games like it, and if Splatoon wins I get to watch you grovel, so it's all good
@BLP_Software The Wii? The system that had great games at a constant pace? What do you mean?
@Mahe People only bought Nintendo games. Third parties said so themselves.
@Shellcore I'm not saying Splatoon 2 can't get number 1, I'm saying it's irrelevant. Look at the top 10 again, if you didn't already. The Switch owners that are out there, they aren't buying games, and there aren't any notable games to buy. That's the 2-fold problem that Switch has, again, like Wii U and Gamecube.
Even if the Switch fans buy the 1 Nintendo game that comes out a month, those numbers won't drive larger adoption and the game selection won't grow. And when the game selection won't grow, more people won't buy the system either. It's a lose-lose for Nintendo.
@BLP_Software Yeah, you've got some false info then. Wii sold huge amounts of third party titles. You do know that Wii has sold over 900 million games to date, and the majority of those are third party?
@Mahe Well given the top sellers there are Nintendos...
@BLP_Software Yeah the top sellers are Nintendo. But do you really expect anything but GTA to sell like Mario Kart Wii, which sold 33 million copies? Only very very few games ever manage numbers like that, and just because Nintendo had some huge hits in Wii Sports, MK Wii and New SMB Wii doesn't mean that third-party million-sellers aren't making bank.
@kyleforrester87 So you're saying you want Final Fantasy 13 and it's sequels remastered for the PS4?
@Wesker Not..exactly that no lol. License boards on FF16 might be nice, though
@Mahe But out of 100 million consoles? Its not good enough. Some games barely sold period.
At the end of the day though regardless of which scenario plays out, the Switch is going to remain irrelevant to many gamers by design alone. And the games are being snapped up immediately. They just dont have legs because everyone is buying it at launch and then there is no one else ti buy said games because no one else can buy said system to play said games.
@Mahe Oh, being number 1 was all I was saying. Nothing else.
Yeah! Big up to my boy Vaan.
Not a surprise really as it was a slow week with this being the only major release, Splatoon 2 should make top of the charts next week if it doesn't I'll be shocked.
Summer for remasters is the perfect time, not much competition from anyone else, so can't go wrong. Having said that, FFXII deserves all the attention it got, it's an excellent game and even better remasters.
Don't forget hellblade releases in august. Won't top probably but it should at least chart, right?
@BLP_Software What are you talking about? Of course there were some games on Wii that didn't sell much. But when a console is successful, even the less successful games sell more than on a flop console (see: Wii U, Switch).
That's how the game industry operates. Not every game can be a hit, but the games that sell hundreds of thousands or even millions make up for the rest, and some publishers can continue operating even if their games don't sell millions. The important thing is to get those games available to as many gamers as possible, and that's what Wii did.
Let me remind you, over 900 million games and counting on an install base of 100 million. That means an average attach rate of over 9 games for all of those 100 million Wii systems.
@Mahe Im curious about something.
Why do you consider a system a flop after 4 months? And at what point does it cease to be so?
@BLP_Software All the signs are in the air: Switch is heading the way of Nintendo's bad systems like Wii U and Gamecube.
This will change if Switch and its games actually start selling at a respectable pace. If it gets games and sales like 2DS and 3DS did, it's no longer an unmitigated disaster like it is right now.
@Mahe Okay so...fastest selling incarnations of various franchises and fastest selling Nintendo home console = unmitigated failure?
Now...Im not very good at math but...thats illogical. Surely it would need to be the opposite. So you want it to replicate the 3DS? It'll take more than 4 months I am afraid. That's just bending to the laws of physics and physical labour at that stage.
I noticed beyond the games not selling fast enough, which is factually incorrect, you didnt actually state a reason.
Here's the thing. You need to base your hypothesis and observations on fact. And since you said all the signs are in the air, that phrase means its still up in the air. Undecided.
Its too early to call and again, if youre going to make a statement, make sure it isnt about a system thats 4 months old and couldnt possibly have the library of the 3DS so soon, and that your facts back you up and not the opposite.
Im not the biggest fan of the system either, but at least I acknowledge the data.
@BLP_Software You think I'm going to summarize 4 months of sales data plus historical Nintendo data just for the heck of it?
Here's the important thing: your "data" is wrong. You're basing your assumptions on headlines and possibly a poor understanding of sales and historical Nintendo consoles (just look at how wrong you were about Wii), so you make ridiculous claims like "fastest selling". Check the data, Switch has sold worse than Wii U. Mario Kart 8 Switch has sold worse than Mario Kart 8 Wii U. And so on. Not to even mention the actual successes like Wii and Mario Kart Wii.
This means that unless things change, Switch is heading for the Wii U/Gamecube graveyard. This is how trends work. Things for Switch need to change for it to even catch up to 2DS/3DS. It would be completely ridiculous to assume something is going to change when the thing is trending at irrelevance.
@Mahe Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had the best opening weekend of the series. Switch is the best opening weekend of their home consoles.
And of course it hasnt sold as many units overall as MK8. The system isb4 months old not 18 months old like the Wii U was at the time!
Do you know why its all "sold worse"? 4 MONTHS! Do you legitimately expect something in that time to sell 15 million units? Are you really that insane? What other crazy expectations do you have?
Do you expect to reproduce too? If something doesnt sell as well as its predecessor immediately its a failure? What damn planet are you on? Show me a system that sells 15 million in 4 months and we will talk. Go on. Do it. It doesnt happen. You dont flood the market. There probably isnt enough time to produce that many that fast. Its most likely unfeasible.
If you ever run a business, youd be declaring yourself bankrupt on day 1 because you didnt sell your entire stock immediately.
@BLP_Software Whoa, cool it down there, pal. Look at what you're writing, are you really sure you want to be writing some of that stuff?
I think I put an hour or 2 into FFXII when it first came out on PS2, couldn't get into it at that time, I think I was just playing a bunch of other stuff. I don't think I liked the combat system as much then, however after playing FFXV I have a better appreciation for the combat system of this I think. I'm really enjoying my time in FFXII already got like 18 hours played.
@Wesker I would take a 13 remaster. That x3 speed boost would be a god send, and change the leveling system to something a bit more free form and we are onto a winner.
