Shenmue III’s debut trailer has been met with a mixed response: fans love the look of the environments, but pretty much everyone is in agreement that the animations need work. It’s no surprise, then, that Ys Net’s long-awaited sequel looks much better in stills – with its oversaturated art style augmenting the title with a very ethereal feel. It’s definitely got a je ne sais quoi to it.
Of course, even when they’re not moving, the character models still do look weird. Writing on the PlayStation Blog, director Yu Suzuki notes that the team’s “aiming to significantly upgrade the visuals” and that this is all still a work in progress. With over a year to go, that’s fair enough; even if the animations are disappointing, we definitely feel that this project is roughly on the right path.

LOOK UPON OUR DEAD EYES, MORTALS, AND DESPAIR!!
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi yeah. In that first picture with the two guys fighting - in the video, the guy on the left never once changes that expression 😂
I don't think trying to keep the characters looking like they did on Dreamcast is the right way to go.
It's Shenmue! I would be happy enough with nothing more than the original graphics, I just want the rest of the story. Saying that, surely it would have made more sense to get Sega onboard from the start and lifted the Yakuza Zero engine?
The environment looks nice but the human models is scary! I hope they fix it when it release in 2018.
