Shenmue III was never coming out this year, but now publisher Deep Silver has confirmed. In an outstandingly brief statement, the firm said that the “extra time will be used to polish the quality of the game even further”. Considering the scant snippets of gameplay we’ve seen thus far have been barely polished at all, it’s probably for the best.
Of course the good news is that you’ll have the recently announced high-definition re-releases of Shenmue I & II to tide you over, with SEGA slating a PlayStation 4 compilation for later this year. The delay is disappointing but the writing was on the wall – honestly, we’ll be surprised if it doesn’t get pushed back into 2020 yet.

Just makes the over the top reactions at Sony's E3 2015 press conference even more hilarious as the years go by. At this rate we won't get Shenmue 3 until 2025 and who knows if the Final Fantasy VII remake will ever be released.
"Polish the quality of the game even further." But how polished is it now, though? Like, realistically.
@Gamer83 Not this again. Sony's E3 2015 was incredible in the moment — almost everything can be criticised with the gift of hindsight.
Just because FFVII Remake is never coming out and Shenmue III has been delayed doesn't change the fact that the press conference itself was absolutely mindblowing at the time.
Not surprised in the slightest. And honestly the longer it takes the better if it means the quality of the game improves. As long as it does get finished eventually. The game looks more and more like it'll be a sort of cross gen game.
I preordered the upcoming collection. Looking forward to FINALLY trying out these legendary games.
Not a surprise. Just glad it's even happening though and would much rather they take their time.
Also, Shenmue 1 & 2 HD ports are still coming soon, so I'm happy.
Not surprised at all. There’s still the ports though.
@ShogunRok
At least I've been consistent on this. I said it at the time it was a great press conference but it was the wrong games (or should I say vaporware?) being celebrated.
FF7 Remake PS5's 3 year it will be release call your bookie people
To the surprise of absolutely no one.
Is this game even coming out...like ever?
Hindsight is 20/20, my friends.
At least we'll get the ports to hold us over.
Take the time. Do it right.
@Gamer83 "vaporware" People said the exact same thing over and over again about The Last Guardian and we all know what happened.
As has Metro: Exodus too... 2018 was looking great - still looks good but 2019 could be epic...
Not interested in Shenmue 3 personally but I know some are very keen... @get2sammyb for example...
Complaining about a press conference years later because the games it showed took an age to come out is like ordering a pizza that never comes and complaining that the menu doesn't look appetising. Sure, it sucks that the games that were announced a) aren't here, and b) have looked like hot garbage every time we've seen them since they were announced, but that doesn't retroactively change the fact that the conference was a humdinger.
Also, Shenmue III probably needs till 2025 to be polished based on what we've seen so far.
At this point in time, games taking longer isn't always a bad thing. If they take the time to make FF7 and Shenmue 3 as good as possible, I'm all for it.
That being said, let's hope they don't delay these games too long. Or else they may become dated or just not fit in with future titles that offer a better experience. FF15 is a prime example of what NOT to do.
Please god don’t let them mess up the ports
this game and Metro Exodus got delayed to 2019 making me frustrating
@Gamer83 True enough I suppose!
@NintendoFan4Lyf Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, Square Enix has completely botched FFVII Remake and I have no confidence in Shenmue III whatsoever.
At least Sammy tells me The Last Guardian is a truly great game.
IMO, the 2016 Sony Press Conference was better in every way.
I only care about the ports of the originals and that should be on track for this year.
I can see 3 taking forever AND being underwhelming. He also can study the reception of the remasters to polish/tweak stuff for 3.
@Ron22
Definitely agree with that.
@Gamer83 Dont forget this was the press conference that brought back TLG and introduced the world to Aloy! That alone makes it noteworthy.
@get2sammyb You're doing it wrong, you'r'e supposed to blame the delay on RDR2 releasing this fall, get with the program.
Never expected this one anytime soon. But I'm a glass half empty kinda guy so I just expect everything to be delayed anyway. And that's worked out pretty well this gen unfortunately.
I remember when this game was targeting 2017. we all knew that was never realistic. 2019 is for the best and Sega/Deep Silver/Sony would probably prefer we play the remasters first.
I.figured as much when they announced the ports of 1 and 2.
Well, as the story has not moved since 2001, whats another year.
I still have my Dreamcast originals, which I thought were great at the time, and I'll be waiting to play it to see what happens next regardless.
People have died waiting for this sequel.
"The extra time will be used to polish the quality of the game even further"
Yeah right, they're all sitting in the arcade playing Space Harrier.
Wanted to re-play I and II before this anyway. They can take their time.
All the AAA games out on PS4 in the 2nd half of 2018 was going to overshadow them regardless. Better all around.
@Gamer83 Horizon, Uncharted and TLG were the highlights of 2015 for me. So it's still good IMO. I didn't really care about Shenmue, and seeing how I've never played a Final Fantasy game, there's no nostalgia, so I definitely don't mind waiting another handful of years.
Don't mind at all. Anybody upseted by it should go through a reality check.
The state of FF 7 is rather disheartening, considering that there is a big money behind it and they wanted to do it episodic.
will be launch game for ps5
@Gamer83 But you're mentioning only two games of that conference, and Sony don't have control of both. On the same conference, they announced The Last Guardian, Horizon and Uncharted. We could discuss here during hours of announced games that are not out yet, some good examples: Below, Crackdown 3, Scalebound (cancelled), Project Spark and Fable Legends (both don't exist anymore).
Not that surprising. I can't think of any Kickstarter video game that wasn't significantly delayed.
@PS_Nation
As I've said, I thought the 2015 Sony E3 press conference was great, but it wasn't for the reasons everybody else did. For most people it was the 'big 3' of The Last Guardian, Shenmue 3 and FF VII. It's not the conference that was bad or hilarious. It was the over the top reaction by people in the audience that now looks utterly ridiculous and hilarious. Only one of those three games is out and the two that garnered the biggest E3 reactions since The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess debut trailer are nowhere close. Grown men and women crying, fainting and acting like a bunch of giddy school children and the rate it's going we'll never see one of those games and the other is definitely more than a year away. It's just funny to me. That's why, even when a game in a long dormant franchise that I love is announced, I don't go crazy, because I know it's entirely possible it remains in development hell for a long, long time or, worse, may not ever actually become a reality.
@JoeBlogs
Given the state of SquareEnix, even back then, I could've predicted what would happen. The FF VII remake sounded like a disaster and a terrible idea from the start. Sometimes it's best to leave stuff the way it is. I'm starting to feel the same way about the Resident Evil 2 remake. One of my favorite games ever, and I was quite happy when I heard the news, then reality smacked me right upside the head with a 2x4 and I realized this is modern-day Capcom and there was no chance it would come to fruition. We haven't heard about it since other than 'it's in development.' The only part they didn't add is 'hell' after 'development' because that's where it really is. Just like Shenmue 3, just like FF VII. It's very rare companies get remakes right these days, which is why I give Sony and partners at Insomniac and BluePoint tons of credit for the stellar Ratchet & Clank and Shadow of the Colossus remakes.
Most of us have been waiting for 17 years so one more ain't going to hurt .........Hurry up
@JoeBlogs
Didn't say that either but I do think crying and getting light headed is a bit over the top.
