We're yet to see Cyberpunk 2077 in action, but same can't be said of journalists who are attending E3. According to them, CD Projekt Red's next role-playing game is looking seriously special -- the lucky b*stards have been able to see a full 50-minute gameplay demo behind closed doors.
Adding to the hype, the Polish developer has published a press release that goes over the game's main points. It explains the setting, gameplay, and RPG elements. If you've still got any lingering questions, this should hopefully answer them.
The Role-Playing Game of the Dark Future
About the Game
- In 2077, America is in pieces. Megacorps control life in all its aspects from the top floors of their sky-high fortresses. Down below, drug-pushing gangs, dirty-tech hustlers, and slingers of illicit braindances run the streets. The world in between is where decadence, sex, and pop culture mix with violent crime, extreme poverty, and the unattainable promise of the American Dream.
- In a world where you have no future, what matters is that you control who you are. To survive and protect your independence, you modify your body with advanced cyberware and take jobs others would never dare. You choose to live free, bound by no systems or controls—the only rules you obey are your own. Because you’re a Cyberpunk.
- In Cyberpunk 2077 you play as V—a hired gun on the rise and you just got your first serious contract. In a world of cyberenhanced street warriors, tech-savvy netrunners, and corporate lifehackers, today you take your first step towards becoming an urban legend.
Become a street mercenary of the future…
Create a hero able to survive in America’s most dangerous megacity.
- Create Your Own Cyberpunk Your name is V, and you can be anyone you want to be. Cyberpunk 2077 will feature full character customization, with gender, appearance, and personal background all affecting the shape of your game. As you progress. you’ll develop skills in urban warfare and network hacking, as well as modify your body with cyberware like infra-red eyes or neural reflex boosters.
- Fluid Class System – Become a Netrunner. Techie or Solo.. or a mix of all three. Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t impose any player roles and allows all available classes.
- See Night City Through Your Eyes – Cyberpunk 2077 brings first-person perspective back to the role-playing genre. Deep narrative immersion is a key design priority, and you’ll experience the story of the game’s protagonist entirely through their eyes.
- Interactive Dialogue Control – You’re a participant, an agent, not an observer. Cyberpunk 2077 features an interactive dialogue system that gives players maximum control during conversations—comment on an uncooperative character’s tattoo to please them, or end a conversation early with a well-placed bullet. The choice is always yours.
- Game Noir – With its mature approach to storytelling, Cyberpunk 2077 adopts elements of noir cinema and inserts them into the future of video games. Without a clear definition of what’s good or evil, in Cyberpunk 2077 you’ll make hard choices to define yourself in a city that wants to bring you to your knees.
…and enter the most decadent megacity…
Night City is a playground for dreamers, an urbarn jungle that offers luxury excess… or a bullet to the brain if you mess with the corporations.
- Go Anywhere, Do Anything – Cyberpunk 2077 is fully open-world, which means Night City is yours for the taking – if you’re prepared. With 6 distinct districts to explore, hundreds of buildings and thousands rooms to enter, and dozens of miles of roads to hit, there are always places to be and things to do.
- You’re Worth What You Have – The world of cyberpunks is all about your gear. Wear designer clothes, buy (or steal) cars, and acquire black market military tech to help you during your missions. Then use blood money to invest in properties all around the city.
- Jack In, Run the Net – Night City is fully connected and offers countless cyberspace access terminals. As you explore the Net, you’ll discover layers of hidden systems, firewalls, and security programs deployed to fry your brain. During missions, you’ll clash with hostile netrunners defending corporate megabuildings—both in cyberspace and in the real world.
…to uncover it’s dirtiest secrets.
- Story-driven and action-packed, Cyberpunk 2077's cinematic plot was written to provide a rich and robust single-player experience. Offering dozens of hours of main arc quests and lots of additional activities like side quests and Street Stories, the game is a good fit for both hardcore completionists and gamers who like to focus on instant action. Featuring CD Projekt RED’s trademark storytelling system driven by choice and consequence, in Cyberpunk 2077 players navigate the streets of Night City along strongly contrasting paths to arrive at one of a range of story outcomes.
Now that just sounds superb, doesn't it? Obviously you can't judge a game that's probably still at least a couple of years away from release on a gameplay demo or a description from the developer itself, but after The Witcher 3, it's hard to doubt the ability of CD Projekt Red.
Now we just need to see it with our own eyes. As soon as the gameplay footage is made publicly available, we'll be sure to let you know.

Why are we not seeing gameplay? Come on CDPR, I thought you were all about the gamers!
"or end a conversation early with a well-placed bullet. The choice is always yours."
I'll always be choosing the bullet. Can't wait to write that bit into my back story.
Game takes place in "Night City."
Almost the entire trailer is set during the day.

I REALLY like the sound of this.
this sounds like the perfect mixture of gta, watch dogs and witcher. i love it!
It's such a big departure from The Witcher games and even then, most of the people who saw it think it's a game changer, like Wild Hunt was. Now that's a studio with extreme capabilities.
@jdv95 Two games which I'm not fan of. As for the Witcher I haven't played it, yet. I am however interested in this game eventhough it's first person view. Just need to see the (PC) demo gameplay now.
Deus Ex with a few extra steps!
Gameplay is the only thing that can convince me!
It reminds me of the Karl Urban Dredd film which was fantastic. Throw in some Deus Ex, GTA and a load of that CD Projekt Red magic.
This. Sounds. Amazing!
All of this sounds amazing!Loved the trailer although I don't understand why some people get to see gameplay and others dont.
Still,I'm not too bothered I still have yet to go back to the Witcher 3.
@ApostateMage The music in the trailer, to me at least, had a Dredd sound to it. I thought the soundtrack to that film was awesome so yeah, I definitely get that vibe too.
Need to see proper gameplay before I would consider buying this game.
I have complete confidence in CDPR.
@ApostateMage Dredd was sublime
I think Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is about to be replaced as my favorite RPG this gen. Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be everything I love about games or movies with futuristic settings.
My most anticipated game!!! As for 'game-play', there are people that have played this and all are blown away by it. You can understand CD Projekt Reds decision to try and give people a 'snapshot' of the game in a minute or two and to show it off during 'daytime' to break away from Deus Ex, Bladerunner etc comparisons - to stand on its own.
I would have liked to see some game-play - but then there is still time between now and release anyway...
I'm predicting this games comes out in 2020 solely based on the fact that its based the tabletop game CyberPunk 2020.
...wait....
so it's a first person perspective!?...
...really!?..
@kyleforrester87 @Blue_Beetle It really surprised me just how good that film was. Like a throwback to classic 80's/90's action flicks.
Damn. Sounds epic!
Open world Deus Ex?
Super happy about the full editor, or at least till I learnt it’s a first-person game. I’ve never understood the point in including it if you can’t even see your character 😕
@clvr You'll be able to see your character in all his/her glorious detail during conversations. And there'll be an awful lot of those, I'm sure of it.
@Wazeddie22 I think it's about showing it to people who can appreciate when something is work in progress and things can change. Not sure a lot of the internet is that mature. They will show us when they are ready to. I read that one of those hidden messages lists 3 videos, the reveal, E3 and one with letters that might point to Gamescon's location.
@ApostateMage ah I see, thanks for pointing it out! I still prefer third-person view personally, though.
Hype, looks dynamite!! Hope they get the gunplay right and a better progression difficulty than witcher 3. I bloody love witcher but after bloody Barron quest line I died far more from falling off stuff than combat on death march!
People won't even remember Deus Ex after this... Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be on another level.
This looks really interesting, I think this game will be next-gen game.
@Splat The first deus ex on pc is amazing, but all the sequel did not live up to the first game.
I l💕ve watchdogs and grand theft auto is the best franchises ever.cant wait for cyberpunk 2077.its looks legendary.word up son
iirc they've said it'll be out by middle of 2019
@Splat That's what I was thinking. If Deus Ex returns over the next few years it better be damn good, because it sounds like Cyberpunk is going to eat its breakfast.
Just watched an interview by angry joe and the creator/developer of cyberpunk and it was VERY insightful!!! Go watch it!
Acid rain!
Ability to use the same "praying mantis" blade arms as the girl in the old trailer!!!!
And more!
