Well, we weren't expecting to wake up to this. Sony has just announced the PlayStation Classic, a miniature console in the same vein as Nintendo's NES and SNES Classics that have proven to be wildly popular.
The pint-sized PSone takes the form of the original model, and comes in at just 45% the size of the regular box. It comes pre-installed with 20 games, which include Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. The full list hasn't yet been made available, but we're sure it wouldn't be too hard to guess some of the other titles that will show up. Here's our list of games we'd love to see on the now-confirmed machine.
The PlayStation Classic comes with a HDMI cable, a USB cable for power, and two original PSone controllers -- yes, the ones without analogue sticks. In a nice touch, the Open button on the machine switches between games, while the Reset button will suspend play. It launches on 3rd December, which some might recognise as the same date the PlayStation first launched in Japan back in 1994. As for price, the PlayStation Classic will set you back £89.99 / €99.99 / $99.99. Check out the PlayStation Blog for the official word.

I still have the 5 games you mention, and consoles to play them on.
Day 1 buy
I'll take 3.
Nostalgia is a powerful thing.
Pre-orders should go up soon. Looks like it's already available in the US.
Finally ! Day one for me ✌🏾😊
I just pre-ordered mine , BestBuy has them available for my PS brethren in the US.
Nice. Only 20 games though, more of a collector's item than an essential item, I think. But we'll see what the other games in the list are first.
I must admit, I'd love to have one of these.
Although I have Retroarch with a heap of games, I am very sure I will be buying this little beauty
It's ok as long as they don't waste 1 slots on game s we've already had remastered or soon to be and available on ps4. Crash, spyro, resident evil and soon to be 2, final fantasy 7 and 9
I'll wait until it's hacked like the SNES Mini and then install games on it.
This is neat but would much rather be able to play ps1 games on the ps4, but who am I kidding I will be buying one of these!
I'll grab one. Hope it has authentic loading times and wobbly graphics lol.
Nicee, I want tomb raider 1, syphon filter 1, spider-man 1 (I saw the LP on youtube and the game seems still fun to play), suikoden 1 and of course, castlevania symphony of the night
Oh and the ability to buy more ps1 games from psn.
And yes it's a day one for me
Edit: How can I forget final fantasy tactics and street fighter alpha 2, also playing spider-man ps4 make me remember insomniac disruptor on ps1. And I guess metal gear solid 1 is fine too. And I want crash team racing.
This is rather cool. I still have my fat PS2 with component, and for the cost, the games can be bought in their original format.
Nice thing though.
Hopefully Sega don't knacker up their Mega Drive mini by rehashing the atgames junk.
That's pretty awesome, I will probably buy it too because I don't have a PS1.
I'm really curious about the games that will be included, because my best memories with the device are with games like Spyro, Crash Bandicoot and Croc. Two of these series are being remastered on PS4, and it's really difficult to imagine Croc on it.
Medievil will be on PS4 too.
It's gotta have Harry Potter & the Philosophers Stone or no dice! 😜😜
I'm all for nostalgia, but I've still got my PS2 working seamlessly to play all my PS1 games so might give this a miss.
Hopefully it includes games that aren’t available on the PS3 PSN store, although like the NES/SNES classics I assume this is aimed at the wider non-gamer market, people who grew up with the PS1 but don’t own a console any more.
Also worth pointing out that that doesn't at all mean I wouldn't buy one of these!
If it's as easy to crack as the NES/SNES mini consoles, then the included games list is irrelevant but for the lack of analogue controls.
Well that came out of nowhere.
I’d like Final Fantasy Tactics, Tomb Raider, Street Fighter Alpha 3 and PaRappa the Rapper.
Hopefully the machine has a good amount of spare memory and is hackable.
Gah, well I guess that dashes the hopes of a PS1 emulator arriving on Ps4.
Well surely it'll have Metal Gear Solid on it?
A TV game thing 😀
😍Day One I can't believe it's actually happening, best console ever they better put In the Hunt in there a total hidden gem but I doubt it
We'll see. Depending on the games i may be interested. I am not buying just for FF7, which i already have on ps1, psp, psvita, ps3 and ps4
Given that I’ve still got a PS1 - primarily for Tekken 3, surely one of the most enjoyable games ever, and Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone, another old fave - means I don’t exactly need one of these, but of course that doesn’t mean I won’t get one anyway at some point!
Well, that's a thing. I'll get one for sure providing stock isn't silly low.
I always thought it might be coming, hence no PS1 classics on PS4..
Please have Legend of Dragoon!
I'm slightly concerned that Jumping Flash is one of the headline games. Makes me wonder what the standard of the rest of them is going to be!
Not for me, but this could sell very well
Torn on this.
Love the idea, but I have the same issue with the PSMini as I do the NES and SNES mini. And that's the locked amount of games. 20 games is just too small for something with such a huge catalogue of classics. Also no analogue sticks is a mistake. I get why they've done it and could see them doing another one of these with the PSOne model, different games and analogue sticks but £90 is a lot of money.
Hope it does well though. Looks super cute and I have such fond memories of the console.
i wonder if this will have Final Fantasy VIII, nothing else seems to
on topic i am SO getting this
@RogerRoger going back to the old controllers!?
Playstation haven’t really changed the controller since 1994 and that was a straight rip of a SNES controller anyway.
Super excited for this and I think it's great value for money if the full list of games mixes in some classics with some niche titles. Parasite Eve would be amazing. Hopefully there's a way to legitimately expand the number of games.
This is a stupid idea. Why would you not put the dualshock controllers with it!?
@Dange Completely agree. One of my favourite PS1 games is Ape Escape and I'm gutted that there seems to be no chance of it appearing. I might be wrong but I seem to remember that the NES/SNES Minis were quite quickly hacked to run additional games though? Wouldn't be surprised if that happened again here.
@Fandabidozi final fantasy tactics may be my #1 favorite game ever. I played that so much. I played it more than I played 7. I bought the strategy guide for it about 4 or 5 times, everyone of them fell apart. Worst made strategy guide ever.
by the way people IF you want to pre-order it then now is the time, it's on Amazon RIGHT NOW so you best get it in before it sells out
i have
@Rob_230
Yep, the PS4 version with the "dial up a limit break/no random battles so I can get to a save" is the best way to play the game in modern times.
@KingSandyRavage The OG PlayStation controller feels worlds away from the DS4 to be fair.
@SegaBlueSky @Dange They are - literally the work of minutes and the SOCs are powerful enough to run most retro stuff pretty well.
I'd prefer if Sony were savvy to allow for expansion though. Something akin to the NeoGeo X game cards or downloads.
Zero interest in this.
Those games were great back in the day. By today's standards they're horrible. I'd much rather invest my money and time in games that deserve both. Plenty to choose from with better gameplay, better graphics, better voice acting, etc.
@FullbringIchigo #MeToo =O
@naruball of the games included, the only one I haven't played is Wild Arms - but the others really do hold up. Especially Jumping Flash!
I'm in. Seems a bit pricey for what it is and the lack of analogue sticks is a bit of a shame and will limit what games they can put on it.
Still, as a collector and a PlayStation fan, I'll be trying to get one for sure.
Following on to my last comment.
As it's limited to just the 20 games. If i could choose them, it'd be something like this-
Metal Gear Solid
WipEout 2097
Destructive Derby
Destructive Derby 2
Gran Turismo
Gran Turismo 2
Crash Bandicoot
Battle Arena Toshinden
Tekken
Tekken 3
Gran Theft Auto
Resident Evil
Resident Evil 2
Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider 2
Ridge Racer
Ridge Racer Type 4
Final Fantasy 7
Worms
Oddworld Abe's Oddysee
Not happening, but that I would buy.
I might buy one just to sit and stroke it, it's so darn cute.
No analogue means no Ape Escape which is a real shame. Need to see an expanded list before I can commit, games like Chrono Cross & Xenogears would make the difference for me as we never got them over here. It is a real nice thing though, i'm sure it will do good numbers like we've seen the nes/snes classic do.
Didn’t I read somewhere that many games are shackled by things like IP ownerships and copyrights and other legal mumbo-jumbo that I don’t understand? I think we need to realize that the potential library that they can put on here is limited by that, and therefore can’t be a straight up greatest hits collection.
I think the ownership problem is not as much an issue for the early Nintendo properties because they don’t have as many other companies that develop their games. I could be wrong though.
And I agree, this thing is so darn cute that I almost just want one for the aesthetics. 😊
Can you plug it into your phone and maybe play them on the go?! PLEASE!
@Th3solution A lot of licensing issues for PS1 games hobble digital distribution to other platforms and music usually. It's possible that as a PS1 home console release, the mini avoids some of that quagmire. It could prove quite an attractive proposition for some publishers to get on board and take a cut given the undoubtedly high popularity of the thing.
Ninty's licensing was always pretty rock solid and binding, I doubt very much that there's much that they couldn't release if they wanted to.
Not a PS1 generation guy, so not interested personally. I was Sega, NES, SNES, Amiga myself, then skipped to PS2. I think the likes of the SNES games hold up much better graphically than PS1 which is all very blocky. The games don't have that charm that SNES games did. I guess they seemed great back in the day.
It looks cool, but i’m not dying for a PS1 fix what with all the PS1 games I have for PS3 and Vita. Give me a Mini Saturn or Mini N64 please.
I'm probably going to skip this, it's kinda pointless when you can get a PS3 cheaper than the price and you can pick and choose the classics you want to play.... and yes I'm salty lol. Why can't I play these on PS4?
@tomassi Now a mini Amiga! A tiny A500 about the size of a phone would be pretty rad!
@KALofKRYPTON Can you imagine?! Would be great. And, unlike all these other consoles, it's actually a lot more of a faff to try and emulate Amiga games via Retroarch etc so a lot of people would love to get their hands on one.
Just think - Sensible World of Soccer, Cannon Fodder, Skidmarks, Speedball 2, Superfrog, Shadow of the Beast, Lemmings, Worms etc. So many great games back then.
@KingSandyRavage It seems to have USB ports where the original's controller ports were. Who's to say that at least the second-generation DualShock 4 controllers don't work with this?
I think the fact that it's got Tekken 3 and Final Fantasy VII bodes well for the full lineup. Hopefully they managed to get Metal Gear Solid.
Iss soccer and international track and field please!!
It's a beautiful thing. I want to cradle it in my arms like a newborn.
Remember folks - a PS Classic is for life, not just for Christmas
@tomassi Blood Money, Rick Dangerous, Stunt Car Racer... Moonstone!!!
If it has Command & Conquer Red Alert and a cable link then I'm all in.
@KALofKRYPTON Micro Machines, James Pond, Championship Manager, Indy Heat, Monkey Island, Flashback, Syndicate, Zool...
The list goes on! Let's petition them to get it done!
It's not April Fools...
Also I gotta say, the original PS controller looks really ugly without the sticks. Put those sticks back on!
@tomassi There sort of is one already - it's very expensive and will read adf files from 3.5" floppy disks!
I started a forum topic for this - think I may have spotted something worthwhile...
Will buy if you can hack, I mean, add more games like with Snes mini
@FullbringIchigo
its not Nintendo i dont expect it to be limited stock as sony have some common sense businesses wise unlike Nintendo great games but some truly shocking and bizarre decisions
@KALofKRYPTON “worlds” different??? Come off it
@RogerRoger what’s your point?
It's kinda cool and nostalgic and lovely and everything, but honestly I'd rather they just re-released the games on PS4 so I didn't have to have another console I'll hardly ever use sat under my telly. My Switch is already in that spot.
@Turismo4GT nobody is to say that.
But given they want £90 for this and it comes with 2 controllers, why not bundle it it with the controllers for the system that accessed all the games. Any games that were improved and even required the dual sticks are now impossible to be included, or will not be as good an experience if they are included, on the PsOne mini for omitting the DualShock in favour of the worst controller ever made.
Got a PS3 to play PS One games on if I wanted to - which I don't. Now if they decide to make a PS2 mini....
@kixem. yeah im with you.i got a lot of ps1 and ps2 games on my ps3.i. got final fantasy 7.castlevania symphony of the night. parasite eve. metal gear.syphon filter my personal favorite ps1 games ever.etc.word
up son
@Spanky. true that playa.my ps3 got more than 7 ps1 games.and the ps3 PlayStation network got so many ps1 games available so im sticking with my ps3.i also have a lot of ps1 and ps2 games on my ps3.word to your mother.word life.word up son
Wow, Jim Ryan sure changed his tune, huh.
Well, for me I'm not too bothered. No analog sticks means games like Ape Escape won't be on it, and I probably have most of the games on PS3 or somewhere else. Good to see people excited though.
@Jake3103 Legend of Dragoon. 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
This would sell me the console straight away. 😁
@KingSandyRavage fair point, Sir.
Tekken 3, nice. Gotta have a Crash Bandicoot game on there.
@get2sammyb I'm going to pose the classic 'PAL' question, but will they be in 60Hz? Realise you wont know yet, would make a significant difference to my interest, in addition to the games!
I'd like to see Castlevania Chronicles on there, never got a PS3 EU digital release and never have played that game...
@Ristar24 We don't know yet sadly. Fingers crossed.
looks really great but the ps1 games have aged really badly.
PS1 are neither hard to get hold of or expensive to buy. So I am not sure what the point of this is. hs
I was so psyched when I saw the headline, went hunting for a full list of games, took about 4 sites before I realize they only released 5 of them so far. Kind of lame, will withhold my excitement.
@get2sammyb Yeah, I really hope so, that was a great aspect of the SNES Mini that sold me on it, Super Castlevania IV in 60Hz, finally!
I suppose Sony were making moves to recognise this in the past with the PS3 digital release of some games such as RE2 in 60Hz. If their market is retro game fans, would be a smart move.
This news is so big Nintendo Life is talking about it.
£89.99!? Wouldn’t it just be cheaper to buy a second hand OG PS1 and play whatever games you want on it? I’d be surprised if the first Medal Gear Soild and Resident Evil wasn’t on the PS Classic.
Will it come with the NTSC versions (better framerate) or the PAL versions (choppier)
And people said the SNES Mini was expensive 😯
Very cool that Sony’s jumped on the nostalgia bandwagon, but I can’t help feeling that’s the worst gaming era to reintroduce, as the first attempts at 3D aged really badly, compared to the 16-bit era and even the 64-bit era.
I’d be way more interested in an eventual PS2 Mini.
@shonenjump86 Of course NL’s milking this cow, so they can get thousands of clicks from fanboys commenting “Clony’s copying Nintendo again!!1!1!!! They’re so evil!!1!11!!”.
@MaccaMUFC
how many tv today have a scart? also some ps1 games are expensive.
Bet you there will be no Wipeout 2097 due to Red Bull licensing issues. Same reason why it never appeared on the PS Store. Despite being one of the games which defined the PSX.
If it was like the C64 Mini and let you add your own games, I might have been interested. As it is, it's likely to have too many games I didn't like or wasn't interested in the first time around.
I also suspect that on a HD 1080p or 4K TV, PS1 games are likely to look pretty hideous. They were bad enough when I used them on my PS3 at 720p.
And it doesn't even come with a power supply! Okay, people may have something suitable lying around which they can use, but - call me old fashioned - I believe that anything electronic that you buy should come with everything required to actually use it.
@get2sammyb If it doesn't have MGS there was no point.
Funny how they promote it as 45% smaller than the original but I think that still makes it bigger than the PSone.
Here, have another article topic.
@RogerRoger I think the PS5 launching in the next 2 years kills these games on PS4. I wouldn't be surprised to see a service like Nintendo Switch Online or Xbox Gamepass on PS5 though where you pay monthly to rent all of these games. Nintendo launched the NESClassic w/ 30 NES games about 2 years before including them in the online service, so everybody could buy them first, for the 2nd, 3rd or 4th time, then pay to rent the same games fames.
PS5 needs stuff to differentiate it from PS4, selling points, a "classic" rental service could be part of that. And cross console play. Considering we got nothing in the 6.0 update I think PS4 is mostly done. Who knows, changing our names may only be possible on PS5. 😛
$99 is a tough pill to swallow when I could just hook up my PS3 and access all of my digital PS1 games from there. I'd rather pay a small fee to have them all transferred to my PS4 than have another device to hook up.
meh still got an original working psone
Pretty cool. Not sure if I'd get it now, but it's nice to see it exist.
Surprised to see Tekken 3 would be on it. I thought it would never get another release due to the Gon thing.
Just pre-ordered at Best Buy!!!
@RogerRoger they are different. Just not different to really change the experience of using very much for the last 20 years. They’ve deviated from the design once and it was even worse
@shonenjump86
Talking about it or crying that Sony is 'copying Nintendo' which is what I've seen a bunch of nutjobs on twitter doing?
They should have include the use of memory cards shaped like the original Playstation memory cards but use them to increase the number of games (like another 20 games for 30 dollars)...
@KALofKRYPTON I had a hacked Wii U at one stage and was playing the odd Amiga game via Retroarch. It was all a bit fiddly though to be honest!
@tomassi Emulating Workbench is never straightforward!
this is exciting no doubt... but i feel like 20 games is not sufficient enough at the $130can price point... i would have expected at least 30 games to be included when i was daydreaming about a ps1 classic a few years ago. sony's 1st party published games alone would take about 10 game slots (twisted metal 2, legend of dragoon, gran trismo 2, wild arms, ape escape, crash bandicoot 2, crash team racing, medievil 2, parapa the rapper, syphon filter 2, wipeout 2 etc)... i mean, there will be too many games left out — to the point where this wont feel complete. i hate to say it, but i will be happy if the device gets hacked and we can load it with more roms to make up for the shortcomings... that will depend on the internal memory limitations and emulator compatibility of course so i won't hold my breath. as many people have already stated, i will purchase a playstation classic for the novelty factor but i won't be overly amused by the price and lineup of games on the whole.
Mortal Kombat Trilogy would be fantastic.
All that I need now is:
Atari Jaguar/CD Classic
Turbo Grafx/Turbo Duo Classic
Neo Geo Classic (not that junky arcade cabinet thing)
Sega Genesis/CD/32X Classic (a LEGITIMATE release)
@MaccaMUFC Its a good point, I think this is where image quality and the possibility of the 60Hz versions could make this device a bit more appealing to PAL gamers. It could also add save states.
I'd hope for some visual filters to make the games look a bit better than playing an actual PS1, or PS1 games using a PS3, on a modern HDTV.
Hope this isn't too limited in stock.
Amazing i would love to know more about the ( Virtual Disc ) though it might be a small disc that can be upgraded for new ones with more games on that would be amazing. It would mean sony have taken note of the snes and nes mini of not being able to get more games for there machines.
I hope Xbox make a mini as well with splinter cell and halo and knights of the old republic.
Also when they have finished a mini ps2 would be cool as well and hopefully a mini n64 would be a dream.
This is actually disappointing. Really, only 20 games? With the other minis having so much more it's gonna be a shame to see legendary ps1 games be skipped over. For instance I have a feeling FF8 will be skipped once more, Legend of Dragoon will never get it's time in the light, Metal Gear Solid, Suikoden, etc.
@Luna-Harmony when they say virtual disc, i think they just mean digital rom... i don't think there will be a physical disc inside this thing... it will be locked to just the 20 games i believe... which is unfortunate indeed.
@AllTheReddist i think there is a very good chance legend of dragoon makes the cut since it is a first party sony game. i would bet on it, in fact. metal gear solid is a guarantee. suikoden... could go either way on that one but it seems possible as well. the games i don't think have a prayer are games such as lunar, parasite eve, xenogears, vagrant story, etc.
@Neolit As someone who couldn't love psvr more if he tried, yes, yes, a thousand times yes.
But such is life. Sony needs to try harder. Make a proper God of War game for it or something. Lose some money but attract a greater audience. At this rate, it will remain niche. I've lost count of how many psvr games I've bought.
All aboard the hype train!
This is targeted at me. But with so many amazing games on PS4 coming up... I would never care to play any of this.
no one mentioned Kula World omg @get2sammyb
@clvr @Gamer83 yup, it’s gotten pretty bad with the crying and Sony is copying stuff.
I think they copied Nintendo TOO closely! Only 20 games?? Cmon
@KALofKRYPTON yeah I think that's the problem isn't it. The Amiga, despite having amazing games, was still a 'computer' rather than a console.
@tomassi Yeah - there's the CD32, but I've never actually even seen one IRL, much less any idea of what the front end was like...
@Porco Ahhhhhh ok thanks the way they said it makes it sound like a disc or something like a bonus.
I almost preordered this but starting to reconsider, we only know 5 of the 20 games and I could really use the extra $100 now.
