There's no doubt in our minds that October was one of 2018's strongest months for gaming. Stuffed with critically acclaimed blockbusters as well as highly rated smaller titles, it was a period that had just about everything. Of course, this made deciding on our Game of the Month that much harder. Before we continue yapping in order to fill out this opening paragraph, let's just go ahead and take a look at the best PlayStation 4 titles of October 2018.
Bronze Trophy: Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
"The best Call of Duty of this generation," reads a bold opening statement from reviewer Liam Croft. "There will always be those that lament it for the lack of a single player campaign, but what Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 does for its multiplayer experience is nothing less than phenomenal," Liam concludes in our 9/10 review. One of the best multiplayer games money can buy, Black Ops 4's decision to stick to its guns has clearly paid off.

Silver Trophy: Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Although it's much more of an action role-playing game than a traditional Assassin's Creed game, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is still arguably the most impressive title in the series. Boasting a truly colossal open world that's absolutely stuffed with things to see, we called Ubisoft's latest a "masterclass in open world design". The conclusion of our 8/10 review reads: "With a gameplay loop that simply never stops giving, Ubisoft's recreation of ancient Greece is an amazing achievement, and in some ways, a genuine step forward for open world game design."

Gold Trophy: Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition
PlayStation fans have had to wait for Hollow Knight to hop onto PS4, but their patience has been rewarded with a remarkable little action platformer. "Offering a plethora of collectibles and content to explore as well as unrelenting confrontations, the game delivers a sensational, mysterious journey which will undoubtedly test your platforming skills," wrote reviewer Annette Magaña, awarding this super slick adventure a 9/10.

Platinum Trophy: Red Dead Redemption 2
And there it is. An utterly incredible prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar's best ever game. We called it "gripping from start to finish" in our 10/10 review, praising its absurdly detailed open world, memorable characters, fantastic writing, glorious soundtrack, and top notch story missions. In the end, this tale of the Van der Linde gang made off like a bandit with our Game of the Month votes.
"It's an immaculately polished release that pulls no punches in its delivery, pushing both brutally mature themes and perfectly placed satire," we wrote, concluding that "Red Dead Redemption 2 is a modern masterpiece." Maybe we should be talking Game of the Year rather than Game of the Month.

How we decide our Game of the Month: At the end of each month, the editorial team put together a list of nominees. Nominees must have been released within the month, and they must have been reviewed by Push Square. We select nominees based on our own review scores.
The editorial team then presents this list of nominees to the rest of the Push Square staff. Staff are asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to be crowned Game of the Month. First choice gets 3 points, second choice gets 2 points, and third choice gets 1 point. When voting closes, we tally the results to determine the order of this article. The game with the most points is our Game of the Month.

I voted Hollow Knight purely because it's the only one i played, i'll get odyssey and Red dead at some point, have no interest in COD though!
Astro Bot Rescue Mission. (Nah, Red Dead Redemption 2 definitely deserved its win this month.)
The Quiet Man.
@get2sammyb Astro Bot for me could well be my game of the year. Think I may be the only person on the planet that is not remotely interested in Red Dead.
@bindiana Astro Bot's right up there for me. Very impressive game.
My top 3 for October:-
Obviously its RDR2 at number 1 for me - certainly the game of the year - not just the month and may well be the best game of the generation so far - although the Witcher 3 may well have something to say about that...
AC: Odyssey is easily the Second best and a game of the year contender - not that it would win but should at least be in the nominations. It does do some things better than RDR2 (particularly HDR) so its a worthy 2nd place...
3rd has to go to Forza Horizon 4 - not a game on Playstation I know but its stunning, fun and the new seasons changes the map on a weekly basis. Certainly should win best 'driving' game of the year.
RDR2 & Astro Bot for me!
Got Hollow Knight & Catlevania Requim, but not started either of them yet.
FIST OF THE NORTH STAR? Was my choice.
@ApostateMage That's a November release, but don't worry it's got the Platinum Trophy award on lock this month.
What a brilliant month!
Call of Cthulhu for me. It's rare to get a Lovecraft-based game that actually stays true to the style and atmosphere of the books, and is not some jump-scare, note-collecting and/or gore-fest thing (i.e. nothing in the slightest like Lovercraft).
Death Mark is very interesting as well. I watched a youtuber translate and play through the Japanese version. I had no idea it was coming to consoles in the West, but here it is. Japanese horror? 'yes' please.
Be Soul Caliber VI for me. Mainly because it's the only game I so far have bought. No doubt RDR2 will top it once I get around to getting it.
Just started Hollow Knight this morning and I already love the atmosphere. I'll be crawling through this Metroidvania title past the new year. Add Spider-man to the list of recent gems released and it's no wonder why the PS4 dominates this generation.
Maybe I will buy AC Odyssey on Black Friday, not sure yet because I have many games to play already.
Red Dead Redemption 2 easily wins October from this list and is up there with the best this year although it's a bit like stroking a cat, its perfect most of the time but occasionally it will turn around and scratch your eyes out for no good reason 😁
The best month this year imo. So many good games on every console.
RDR2 because it's the only one I've played.
@carlos82
Cats are very clever. If your planning to skin them for their furs they know it.
Very surprised Astro Bot didn't even make it into the top 4. Highest rated VR game yet.
@Bonbonetti I agree, Call of Cthulhu is a pretty great game. Definitely not for everyone, though.
@jonny_aces I might just say SoulCalibur over Red Dead 2 right now. I’ve had much more fun with SC6 than I have with RDR2. Granted, I’m only early chapter 2, but I just keep wanting to go back to SC. Now, in a month after I’m actually able to understand and learn the intricate gameplay mechanics of RDR2, then my vote might change.
Fist of the North Star for me. Need more fans to support niche titles like this!
