Sony’s released a new commercial revealing its corporate purpose. The 90-second advertisement features an orchestral score and slow-motion footage of people interacting with the tech giant’s products. It concludes with the message: “Sony’s purpose is to fill the world with emotion, through the power of creativity and technology.”
Throughout the video are snippets of PlayStation products, including titles like Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima. The firm has, of course, transitioned to focus more on entertainment products in recent years – though its range of televisions and cameras are still highly regarded. You can watch the puff piece above.

PlayStation is really what keeps Sony afloat.
Yes, the companies 4K TV's get great reviews and are a solid product, but in terms of Sony's consumer products, it's PlayStation that is the bread and butter for the company.
From a gaming market perspective, Nintendo lives and dies by video games. Sony needs PlayStation to stay afloat if it expects to make decent profits (wasn't PlayStation like 30% of it's profits?). Microsoft can take it or leave it, really. It's basically just another service the company provides, but the video games market is just a fraction of the contributing factor the it's $1 trillion company value.
I am a PlayStation fan, but not a Sony fan - at least from a consumer products side of things. My TV is a Samsung. My A/V receiver is Yamaha. My speakers are Definitive Technology. My headphones are Plantronic. I just don't look to Sony consumer products like I did back in the 90's.
Sony is a true megapower amongst businesses. Despite Japans GDP decline 2021 is going to be massive for Sony with the expected PS5 launch
@GamingFan4Lyf I think that's fair Sonys consumer products other than Playstation like to market at the mid to high end of the market and there's just too many competitors out there these days doing things better like Apple & Samsung.
The PlayStation brand other than their film brands is essential for them especially when you see just how much the PS Plus subscription is worth to them.
@GamingFan4Lyf hm i mean it does make them must profit but they do have other services and products like
G&NS (no idea )
Finance services
Sony pictures (movies)
They own the rights to bluray disks
@GamingFan4Lyf I agree. I used to love their TV and Vaio laptops but now the only product that I like and buy is PlayStation. I don't know, but it just feels like that they don't put much effort on their other products and companies like Samsung or LG make some more interesting products with some more unique technologies.
@Fred_Red Yeah, those make up the other side of profits - I tried to make sure to distinguish "consumer products" because, while the other ventures do make up the rest of Sony's money, I feel those are much less "consumer visible".
I bet if you ask the regular consumer who owns the entertainment rights to Spider-Man, they will tell you either "I don't know" or "Marvel". Music...forget about it - I couldn't even tell you what record company produced what artist. Heck it was crazy to find out that the soundtrack to Xenoblade Chronicles X is owned by Sony.
@GamingFan4Lyf Not really, this is the breakdown of sony profits by segments for 2019, seems pretty diverse to me. Yes playstation play a big part of that, but there's other divisions too.
Sony is pretty solid in camera field. Not only do they make good cameras they rule the image senor market. Most phones have a Sony senor and same goes with the camera market. It don't sony on the outside but inside they are all Sony
Well, if you think about it, Sony's business is mostly behind the scenes in the remaining sectors, that's why we don't think about it. Their electronics are embedded in non-Sony devices for example, such as their cameras.
@GamingFan4Lyf
Well, just because you're not into Sony electronics doesn't mean they don't make cutting edge consumer electronics. Sony make "THE" best sound systems on the market. Sony TV's are superior to Samsung TVs. Samsung TVs all have oversaturated colours which kid people into thinking their bright TV is better. Sony uses their X-Reality PRO software to give a far superior picture.
Sony also have the best pair of noise cancelling wireless headphones on the market the wh1000xm3
@Ah-Void
Lol. "They don't put much effort on their other products and companies like Samsung or LG"
You must be living on the moon 😂
I've owned both good and bad TV's. A good Panasonic, a fantastic Pioneer, and two Samsung's, none of which proved very reliable. Now I have a SONY X900E, and I love it!
@FullbringIchigo @ShogunRok I saw them highlight FUNimation/anime in the video, sweet!
I have lots of Sony products. I recently purchased av receiver and I must say that it sounds a lot better than much more expensive receivers... Dolby Atmos and Dts X or music all sounds amazing!
K.Yoshida : "Quick people are looking elsewhere at cheaper and just as effective options... do something do something!"
Sony Lacky : "But sir, we literally can't think of any reason our products are actually neccessary beyond their asthetic and sentimental appeal! Cloud computing is actually a really ethical, cheap and efficient way of doing tech"
K.Yoshida : "Wheel out the Heart-Strings adverts!!!!... and kill that lacky"
Pointless fluff. They literally have no other spin to get you into their products... You buy them because you always have done and you have to have the latest... It's Apple all over again.
Sony will FOREVER has a special place in my heart! I got my first PlayStation console at age 5 in 1996, from there on I've bought Sony products. After the PS2 came out (it was my family's first DVD player) I got my first MP3 devices in the early 2000's. It was a Sony Walkman branded device that took these itty bitty square discs that could hold hundreds of songs on. It was awesome! Then came the PSP which was an incredible portable gaming device! I remember playing Tony Hawks pro skater & Grand Theft Auto while on a family camping trip in the middle of no where, it was an amazing experience! Then came the PlayStation 3 in 2006, I was 14 years old! The PS3 with it's Blu-ray drive also ushered in my first experience with high definition televisions. I bought a 40inch Sony Bravia LCD HDTV with DLNA strictly for HD gaming with my PS3! Sony build their Bravia lines with the PS3 in mind as my TV recognized my PS3 so every time I turned on my PS3 my Sony TV would turn on automatically, switch to the right HDMI & offered excellent adjustability to make games look their BEST! My next Sony device was the PlayStation Vita which was a brilliant device for it's time in 2012. I believe Sony missed their opportunity to make people fall in love with the device as it lacked developers but there were some great Vita games! Borderlands 2, Uncharted & gravity rush we fine Vita games but what REALLY made me love the vita was cross-play. It worked okay on PS3 but when I got my PS4 in 2013 it was amazing to play assassin's Creed 4 black flag while watching Netflix with my girlfriend lol. Speaking of PS4 it's becoming my favorite gaming console of all time! It's given me such rich experiences that have finally surpassed what was given to me in the PS3 era. I purchased a PS4 pro along with a 4K TV in 2018 & it's been a phenomenal experience playing games like God of War in stunning ultra HD quality! Simply put Sony has been a huge part of my life when in come to entertainment & technology! I can't wait to see what the PS5 will bring to the table! Happy gaming!
@Real_Obsi I've seen you post a bunch of pointless and negative comments aimed at Sony and / or PlayStation. Why don't you go join a fan site dedicated to Stadia?
The Ghost of Tsushima gameplay trailer well and truly won me back. I had doubts about the PS5 - then had a rethink.
Our video camera is Sony its Ace (had it 7 or 8 years)
PSVR absolutely blew my mind
My old hifi is Sony (had it 20 years!!!)
Playstation 4 is one of my favourite consoles ever
Spiderman enter the spiderverse
Horizon Zero Dawn, Astrobot and Rocket League
and
Pushsquare man, best website of the Internet. Love this place.
Playstation, Camera, Phone, TV, MP3 player all from Sony. 😆
@wiiware great info 👍🏻. Some people forget that Sony owns a vast portfolio of music licences and looking at the chart, the imaging and sensors solutions division will be ok I expect as they supply image sensors to a few major mobile phone companies (Apple for example).
@BrettAwesome I've got the exact same TV and can't find fault with the picture or sound and now there are more 4k videos on YouTube it enables the TV's ability to show off its X1 processors capabilities.
@lyallop
Picture quality is great, but I never use tv speakers 🙂
Do you know "the HDR channel" on youtube?
@BrettAwesome No I didn't know about "the hdr channel" I've just taken a look to see what it's all about, saw what they had uploaded and instantly subscribed, cheers for pointing that out 👍🏻.
