Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is back in the news cycle this week after an extended look at gameplay. It's an impressive showcase, especially if you watch it in 4K, and even the 3D audio is impressive. While it obviously looks wonderful at its full resolution, what about frame rate?
Speaking with Japanese magazine Famitsu, Insomniac Games has elaborated on performance options available in Rift Apart. As you can read in the interview, the PlayStation 5 exclusive will feature two modes: one running at 4K and 30 frames per second, and another running at a "lower resolution" at 60 frames per second. The developer also shared the news itself in the below tweet:
This is very similar to performance options in Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, also coming from Insomniac. While we don't know the exact resolution of the 60fps mode, it will be using temporal injection, which will essentially improve the picture quality to 4K levels. It seems the studio is keen on giving players the choice between higher detail or smoother performance, which is always nice to have.
Which mode will you be playing when Rift Apart launches on PS5? Jump dimensions in the comments section below.

I don't get this option, does it mean the game either runs at 60fps/1080p or 30fps/4K?
@Pat_trick that's how I'm reading it.
@Pat_trick from the article:
"While we don't know the exact resolution of the 60fps mode..."
Unknown at this point. Game looks glorious already so personally wouldn't be too fussed if it was 1080/60. Though I'm sure it'll make for some lively discourse online lol
I think it'll be 1440 or 1800p for 60fps
Thank God. 1080p/60fps is far more appealing to me than 4K/30fps.
If it's upscaled 4k that's fine but if a lot of graphic fidelity is lost than I'll take 30fps please.
@Pat_trick It's unknown but they're using temporal injection on the 60fps mode, which is a reconstruction technique they used on PS4 Pro.
So effectively if you don't know what any of this means, both options will look great!
I’ll take the higher resolution. I honestly don’t care if a game runs at 30fps it feels just fine to me.
@PretendWorking I don't think it'll be that simple. I don't think the 60 fps mode will look quite as good tbh.
I used to be a resolution hound until I played Horizon: Zero Dawn at 60FPS. As much as I love 2160p I’d probably go with the 60FPS option if they’re not one and the same. Although I look forward to the drama that having these options is going to cause lol.
It'll render internally at 1440p and use the ML to reconstitute the image using AI algorithms to upscale the image back to 4K... most likely.
Insomniac's games run great at 30 so I won't be bothering with 60, especially if there's a photo mode.
Easy. I dont have a 4k tv - and i wont be buying one just for PS5 - so i'll take the 60fps option
I'll take frame rate over resolution any day at least we're given options
I want at least 720p 60 fps like Ratchet games on PS3.
Ok where are the people from the COD article saying that it was fake news and the PS5 was easily going to hit 120FPS in 4K? Lmao, it depends on the game in question, and this game looks pretty intensive.
@Anti-Matter It’ll he much, much higher than 720p.
Lol, so much for “next gen”. I don’t get the hype if they can’t do 4K 60FPS minimum.
@get2sammyb I forgot how bad 720p looked and then booted up RDR1 a couple of days ago.
I'll take the 60fps option.
Although I hope it'll be a resolution bump via supersampling or similar rather than a proper graphics and resolution downgrade.
Nice, I hope it's only resolutions that's sacrificed for fps, I still want those sweet RT reflection
@JesWood13 Who says 4K 60 should be the standard?
That's excellent news! I think that makes this the first Ratchet and Clank since the ps2 that can be played on 60 fps. Such a massive difference.
I'd imagine the 60fps mode will still be much higher than 1080p, turning off those ray traced reflections alone would free up quite a bit of headroom. Its great we're getting a choice but ill be trying the full fat 4K 30fps mode first as it looked glorious
@AdamNovice pC mAsTeR rAcE
It'll be interesting to see the difference between upscaled/temporal injection and true 4k for sure. Normally I'm not a big fan of 60fps but with Ratchet and Clank I can imagine it being a nice option to have.
What about a lower resolution mode running at 30fps, but with more visual flourishes?!
I recently played Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One X, and the added "Enriched" mode has me a touch spoiled for 3 visual options.
Sure native 4K is nice for some and 60fps is nice for others. But what about those who want the extra resource for a more detailed environment?
Heck, I'd even go with a 1080p/30fps mode if it meant way more visual flourishes.
I play Quake II RTX on an Nvidia 1060 running at 640 x 480/30fps and I am fine with it (basically because that's about all the GPU can handle).
I know, if I want that kind of control for games, I should just keep playing on PC. But Rise of the Tomb Raider showed that it's a nice option.
Even though it looks amazing
This is next generation, we should get all the bells and whistles etc at full 60fps 4K.
Maybe given time it will come.
@AdamNovice SONY?
@nessisonett people still don't understand it's not all about pixel throughput sadly, and that the quality of the pixels (effects applied) has a great bearing on computational usage, which in turn lowers the amount of pixels a system can churn out (resolution and frame rate). It'll never change, I've been having these discussions with people since the days of the N64, still all these years on, despite countless articles explaining this stuff, there remain people who just don't get that resolution and frames aren't A) the only metric and B) the only draw on computational power.
Its ironic for all the fanboys on twitter etc. saying "what resolution? Fake 4k etc.", erm I'm sorry how many games thus far have Xbox shown running on XBSX? Not "approximate XBSX target render" pc nonsense? You know, the 12Tflops ultimate power that's so much better but so secretive they won't show any games using it!
I still don't understand what fps means! All I know is I have a PS4 slim and play it on a TV, and most PS4 games are absolutely stunning. I am so ready for a new ratchet and clank!!! Might wait about two years before grabbing a PS5 though, this way there will be a large collection of games to play!
@SirAngry Absolutely, just look at all the particles in the trailer. You could have the cleanest looking game of all time at 8K but with Superman 64 levels of ‘kryptonite fog’ being the only way to maintain performance.
@SirAngry Absolutely, and with clever techniques like checkerboard and even more so DLSS and equivalents to come native 4K just shouldn’t be the target in many cases.
Nice! PS5 will be a much more attractive option for me if more developers patch in performance modes into their games. All I want is 1080p/60.
@djlard Pretty certain Sony have never said that ever.
@Anti-Matter I Don't Think Their Is a Game On The PS4 That Runs At 720p Everything Is Ether 1080p 1440p Or 4k
Thanks sir.
Don't care if res is just 1080p, i'm please now.
@AdamNovice Nothing runs great at 30, that's why it's 30. Disappointing to see yet another game be a standard 30fps. Expected with consoles these days sadly though.
Definitely the 60 FPS. My TV and PS5 upscaling will suffice, but I need that smooth motion flow on the screen.
Seeing some PS4 games running at 60fps was a game changer for me. Nathan Drake Collection was amazing at that frame rate. It actually makes games look better by having everything more clear when moving around or when the camera is moving.
Why people try to choose?
Both of course!
I'll probably favour the highest graphics though.
Edit
I see a lot of whining now because they give 60fps option. Dumb internet never disappoint 🤡
A source reported its 4k 30fps or 4k 60fps (whatever it's true or not I dont care) and still some were having baby tantrums 'what's the point aarrgh'. Haha
1440 / 60FPS , upscaled, should be very very good. It's nice to have the option to choose 30 or 60FPS. While I do play 30FPS with no problem ( horizon, uncharted 4, god of war, TLOU2, etc), when I first played TLOU Remastered 60FPS, then I tried to go 4K / 30FPS but... was too "slow".
It's really not a matter of 30FPS or 60FPS, but if we really need "true 4K"... I'm ok with any upscaling/reconstruction technique or whatever fits to produce a good image using the least procesing power... then we can see benefits either with increased FPS or increased fidelity (RT, whatever). True 4K is a waste, I think that is more or less an universal true right now, isn't?
1080p/60 fps gang gang
Why can't I have both. This is an expensive next gen console right? not a PS4 Pro 2.
I get it, better graphics, ray tracing, PC's cost X amount blah blah but come on. We were getting teased about 8K for PS5 6 months ago. Now we are having to decide between 60FPS or 4K on a Ratchet and Clank game (yes its beautiful but that's the least I'd expect) and even that's probably not real 4K anyway.
I'll still get both the console and game, but it's somewhat disappointing when I see stuff like this. I don't want to be hearing this sort of thing until 3+ years into a console gen. Not before it's even released.
@get2sammyb Thanks for the explanation!
@redd214 I would personally love 4K/60fps but if the console can't do it I definitely agree that 60fps is more important and having that option is nice.
People who demand the ps5 should be able to pull of 4k/60fps in such high quality games, have no clue at all what the hardware necessary would cost. Just look at the price of an rtx 2080s gpu (which can barely maintain 4k60fps) and forget your dreams of a 500-600$ ps5...
@PretendWorking I didn't say it would.
Okay, first off I'm a huge PS fan. And also I don't necessarily care about 4k/60FPS. But I do feel like earlier this year it was made part of the next gen hype that 4K/60FPS would be a given with the new systems. It just seems like it was a bit of a fib now that we are actually seeing the games and what they are actually producing. Not saying the next gen games won't be enjoyable or still look great. I just feel a bit hoodwinked from the hype train.
I don't think people realise that developing specifically for a system means it's only gonna hit what they go for, they can push every boundary possible, if they wanted it to be 4k 60fps or 120fps or anything else then they could've developed for it. I'll definitely choose 60fps though and hope all developers target giving it as at least an option, even if it's 1440p
I’m a bit surprised by this. To put this in perspective, are there any games on the PS4 Pro that play games in 4K* and 60FPS (I’m guessing no, but perhaps)? I’m assuming there are alot of games that run at 60FPS with 1080P and 30FPS with 4K?
(*Yeah, I know it’s 4K with an asterix.)
@Sinton ya ps5 is more powerful but as a first party ps5 exclusive it means the developers can push the assets and effects and physics and whatever to whatever they want it to be, if they wanted 4k 60fps they could have easily hit it, but that would mean not pushing something to it's max and they chose not to do it
With a game like Call of duty that will be 4k 120fps, it's old assets, made to.run on old hardware so it's very easy to upscale older assets and less of everything
@Dange you could have it both but that would mean less partial physics, lower textures etc.
Just because you can measure framerate and resolution doesn't mean it's the most important
People clearly don't understand that it's the literal beginning of the console generation. It's not going to magically upscale because it's on a next generation console. People want all these things to be launch titles, then complain it's not to their standards when it launches too early. You can already see significant improvement from the extended gameplay demo to the initial reveal.
When you slide down the glass after coming out of the portal, there was no pop-in with the plants anymore, when initially it was very much noticable. Just wait a bit, this stuff takes lots of effort and time to make. I'm guessing insomniac only started developing the two games shortly before or after Sony announced their dealings with insomniac this time last year. That's only 1 year, the last of us 2 took around 6 years.
@Pat_trick likely 1440p upscaled to 4k with 60fps. it will look almost as good as native 4k so it is a very good compromise for 99% of gamers in offering this option. every game should have it.
60 fps is always nice to have in games, graphics don't really matter compared to the smoothness that a high framerate can provide.
The thought of Playing Rachet (or any PS5 game) in disgusting 30fps well...disgust me. The PS4 Rachet was great but it felt at times like I was playing in slow motion compared to the silky smooth PS2/PS3 games.
I guess I will be playing a 1080p game on my brand new powerhouse console 🤷
@Subsided Well, sure the PS5 is more powerful than the PS4, but the way I see it, R&C is the biggest launch window game at the moment. If I was Sony, I’d love for that title to be announced with specs that the current generation can’t or would struggle to achieve.
I’m concerned, Xbox doesn’t seem to have a problem with native 4K 60 fps
@Trajan They were saying that PS5 will run every game at 4K 120FPS because this is all fake news doubting Sony’s POWER
@SirAngry keep fighting the good fight ser, eventually they'll understand....
Powerful machines can always paint more detail on a smaller canvas!
@Sinton but the specs are improved, it's just more of a Speed showcase over resolution, and it's not like it doesn't look fantastic
@Dryster that's because the games are originally built on the Xbox one, so all they have to do is upscale it. It's actually pretty smart, although the games are still restricted in a sense. The Ps5 is built from the ground up just for the console, so of course it will run into errors. Third party games also upscale as well, which is why black ops cold war and dirt 5 can run at 120 fps but this cannot. It's the same for every console generation, when you compare killzone shadow fall to last of us part 2, it's no contest which one is better looking.
Fantastic news, ratchet plays much better at 60, the PS4 game was clunky to control compared to the PS2/3 games (except nexus). This should be optional in as many games as possible moving forward.
I want 8 k 120 fps or forget it. 😉. .Actually I'm an old guy so I won't notice 4k or 8 k or old fashioned 1080p .....just hoping for Sony to continue with ground breaking games and continue where ps4 will leave off .
If this temporal injection looks as good as Spider-Man PS4 on 4K, I’ll take that over 4k30fps on my 4K tv.
Spider-Man looked amazing on a 4K display.
@ShaiHulud Actually the games were 60fps on the Ps3 up until A Crack in Time in 2009 !
@Katsuhono Oh, I hadn't realised that! I remember saying them that they went for graphical fidelity rather than fps, but thought that was at the start of the ps3 cycle.
The question is why can’t a first party PS5 exclusive do 4K 60fps? The devs have been able to fully focus and take full advantage of the power of PS5 but are still giving options of either resolution or performance modes from last-gen, why can’t it do both? 🤔
@AdamNovice Yes... SONY literally said NOTHING about ps5 performance. Maybe just to hide it is not next-gen, but just PS4 Pro+...
Here you can see, how ps5 games, gonna look at 60fps
Converted into 60fps

@RBMango not having 4k doesn't bother me; but, losing graphical effects does. i'll have to try both out to see which one i'll go with.
