We thought this was common knowledge by now, but apparently not. Cyberpunk 2077 will receive an entirely separate multiplayer mode a couple of years after its release (hopefully) later in 2020, and microtransactions will be used to fund it. This whole kerfuffle started earlier today when GameSpot rightfully reported on comments made by CD Projekt Red president Adam Kicinski that confirmed the studio's approach to monetization. After saying that the team wants to treat its fans fairly, Kicinski said: "The goal is to design monetization in a way that makes people happy to spend money. I'm not trying to be cynical or hide something; it's about creating a feeling of value."
This sparked a bit of a panic as the internet decided to read the GameSpot headline instead of the body of text accompanying it and that has now forced the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account to clarify things. As for the game releasing in November (again, hopefully), it is "a single player game with zero microtransactions. One single purchase. No tricks." But when it comes to the Cyberpunk multiplayer project, it "will have some microtransactions".
You probably shouldn't expect this Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer mode to arrive until we're well into the lifecycle of the PlayStation 5 — or once all the game's single player DLC is out at the very least. However, once that online offering arrives, it will be supported by microtransactions.
How do you react to this business model? Do you think it's a fair one? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Come on guys, let’s boycott! Guys? Anyone? Please?
As long as the SP is good, I don’t really care about MP.
'The goal is to design monetization in a way that makes people happy to spend money'. . 🤔
It's a weird way to put it.
Don't care, won't play it. It probably will not, but I hope the multi-player component fails. Just keep working on single player stuff dang it.
I don't mind spending extra money for skin packs in a multiplayer game, but that's only if you can also unlock the skins with in-game currency, and if the skins are like $5 max, no more of this $15 or more for one skin stuff that Fortnite, Modern Warfare, Apex Legends, Rogue Company, etc do.
At least they are being transparent with it all.
Wait what, gamespot covers stuff that isn’t related to Marvel and WWE??
Meh I won't be playing it for the multiplayer anyway
From what I've played, CD Projekt Red works hard just to make a quality experience for gamers. Because of that, I was more than willing to buy the DLCs for Witcher and if it's not pushy, I might do the same for Cyberpunk.
It sounds like it might be like a GTA online, I won't touch it regardless. However the single player game is a day one for me and at least they (as always) are transparent in their plans.
I wonder if they will have actually decent value for MTs. Usually when you look at MTs and compare jay you get to good DLC, it’s never a good price. I hope they change that. Because usually MT need to be a minimum of 5X what the offer for any given price.
Given the very broad definition of microtransactions these days, I wouldn't mind skin packs that are very reasonably priced. What would turn me off are things like premium currency and rotating items.
They also stated some time ago the multiplay will be free. Not free DLC to main game owners but free, 100% supported by MTX. Given CDPRs history I expect they will set a new benchmark in how to do this, following on from some great examples set buy the likes of WarFrame.
The main game will have a load of small free DCL releases as did the Witcher 3. If they release paid DLC is will be more like the full expansions found again in the Witcher3. Blood and Wine was bigger than mainy AAA games by its self
As always, it all depends on what it is for, and how it is handled. Micro-transactions aren't inherently bad, and it depends why they are in a game. So for me it depends on how it is implemented in the online element. As it's CDPR you know what? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Not personally interested in Cyberpunk 2077 for multiplayer personally, but I hope for those who were it's not awful.
No microtransactions in single player is excellent. As multiplayer is a separate project, I'm not too concerned about what happens there.
I still don't particularly like microtransactions, but if CDPR can set a new standard for how they are implemented, a way that is less sleazy than they are now with most games, then I'm at least open to seeing it.
And if they fail, I always have my pitchfork and torch.
I'd only be bothered if it was a multiplayer focused game with microtransactions that aren't exclusively cosmetic.
I won't even touch the online component to this game anyway, as long as SP isn't effected then 🤷♂️
I don't understand why people pay for skins in first person pov games.
Titanfall handled MTX very well in my opinion, if they just do something like that no biggie. Don't think I will use the multiplayer much though, might stick my nose in when it's in full swing. I'm garbage at fps, and I'll have enough with the base game anyways.
Could this be the new GTAV/online that stays in the top 10 for years?
I really like having multiplayer totally separated. At least they don't try to shoehorn some sh*tty multiplayer side quests that force you to interact with what is supposed to be human beings. Thinking about AC Unity for example.
I wouldn't say this ruined CDPR, but certainly puts them down a notch for me as these things tend to be slippery slopes.
Today it's cosmetics on multiplayer, tomorrow it's pay to win and xp boosters.
So last week people were complaining about mtx in avengers... and even refreshed cd project.... but now mtx is more v tolerable? Again, gamers are so fickle. And i don't want to hear how its just only me, because y'all complain about cod but their mtx is mp only. Smh.
@ILikeStake Not everyone wants to play games alone ffs.
Just add 3rd person
This is why I don't play many multiplayer-heavy games and if something is multiplayer only it is an absolute no go. I'll look past it as long as it doesn't ruin the single player portion but now this game has gone from must have to wait and see.
@PcTV If CDPR put in XP boosters, I’ll deep fry my knackers and eat them for breakfast.
@Cutmastavictory It's Only Tolerable Because CDPR Is Doing It.
The microtransactions are designed to make you "feel happy to spend money"?.. What?
Remember kids, buying microtransactions is entirely optional.
Smdh I only have one word regarding this "GREED"
They are jumping on the GTA online train because of how much money it's claimed but I know I will never touch the mp ever and never will 😒😒😒
@huyi The multiplayer component is apparently free to play. The developers need to paid somehow, these things don't just make themselves. They are also a company that needs to make money, they are not a charity. So I do not think greed is the only thing in play here. CDPR have done this with Gwent, I've not played but apparently the mtx is supposed to be quite fair in it.
I don't usually play much that is solely multiplayer based, but I'm not going to write it off completely before we have seen anything of it. It could be cool and really fun or it could be the worst thing ever, but we do not know yet.
I bought the Xbox one x cyberpunk console. I bought it purely because I thought it looked really good and it does. You don't get a code for the game with it, instead you have to claim the game when you first sign in. So it was difficult to sell the game, not impossible but difficult, so I just claimed it on my account.
I'm not joking when I say this, I couldn't be less excited about a game if I tried. I wasn't impressed by the Witcher 3. But because of the Witcher 3's success people automatically think this will be a good game. I don't. There is very little pedigree behind this game. I'm not haten, I'm just saying.
Lol you can keep your multi player just the offline single player for me thanks
Happy to hear they are still holding true to their promises of no MTX in the main single player campaign.
I have no interest in ever playing the multiplayer, so it having MTX is no big deal to me.
The Xbox 360 times have made a lot of you scared of multiplayer lol.
