That irritating buzzing sound many have assumed is PlayStation 5 coil whine could be caused by something else entirely. At least, that’s according to an investigation by one Twitter user, who found that there was a loose sticky label nestled amongst his fan, causing an irritating noise when the console was powered up.
This is how his system sounded when in use:
And after conducting all sorts of scientific experiments, this is what he discovered:
Of course, the solution requires disassembling your PS5, and presumably voiding the warranty in the process. Furthermore, there’s no guarantee this will solve all issues, as it does appear that many next-gen console owners really are suffering from coil noise and not a naughty sticky label. Still, it’s an interesting discovery nonetheless.

This is absolutely going to cause people to void their warranties looking for a label and then complain when Sony say they voided their warranty.
@nessisonett reading further in Twitter it seems no warranty stickers were removed in the process.
@nessisonett no its going to void warranty you can easily take the fan out while still having the wires connected and also without voiding warranty if you look closely at the sticker which has fan wires under has not beentaken off and the guy who fixed it confirmed no warranty sticker in the way
Ugh, that sound makes me want to rip my ears off.
The only sound I have is the soft whir/click of the fan and that can only be heard during games and if I’m legit like 2 inches from the console. Otherwise I can’t hear it. I assume the fan makes some sound
I have it when I play demon souls. However, when I put it in cinematic mode the noise goes away and the console is basically silent it. Put it in performance mode and there is a whine. It changes instantly.
Hell no! I'm glad I didn't buy ps5 on launch day, let people waste their time and money on launch consoles good luck to them!
That would drive me insane!
My PS4 sounds like the noise when you used to wedge a drinks carton in your bmx back tyre to make it sound like a motorbike.
@ApostateMage yeah my ps4 sounds kinda like that except after putting the carton in the back tire you strap the bike to a 747 and stand directly under it while its taking off...well maybe that an exaggeration, but not much of one.
@ApostateMage yeah same. I strip cleaned mine and put new paste on the cpu a few weeks ago but it still fires up like a jet engine when i play anything intense.funny tho as i also stripped my daughters OG ps4 which was loud all the time and now its silent almost. Alot quieter than my pro thats for sure.
One smart person finding that out and fixing it.
My PS5 is good at the moment.
A sticky label who would of thought lol. Thankfully mine is still all good.
'Of course, the solution requires disassembling your PS5, and presumably voiding the warranty in the process. '
Nope. If you actually read on twitter what you just posted it's only 4 screws for the fan and doesnt void the warranty.
Well that's good news for a few users.
why not be like the x were its designed so you can clean the fan
One of my computers made the same noise when I first turned it on after getting it shipped to me. I opened it and found a loose cable against the fan. It happens.
@Skywalker1080p I know right I would love too take the plunge with a new PS5 if it's faulty you can return it for a fix.
@JJ2 video game "journalism"
Touch wood mines running lovely.
@Steel76 came down here to make the exact same comment! Very very annoying noise but it didn't even sound like coil whine...
Apparently some people do notknow what is coil whine.
Treating the symptoms, isnt going to help. You have to find the root of the problem. It's like cars, you have to ask the five why's. Why did it make that noise? The fan. Why did the fan make a noise? A loose label or whatnot. By the time if/when you get to the fifth why, you should know what's ailing it.
DO NOT DO THIS. That is not the coil whine noise people are reporting. IT is nowhere near that high pitched or loud. Next time mine does it I will record and post.
@Steel76 indeed misleading. This is not the same noise as coil whine. Two completely different things.
It will not void warranty either as he didn't complete remove the fan as in the teardown. It's still plugged in just moved to the side.
The worst part of this is its gonna end up being a very widespread problem and require a lot of replacing/fixing all because of a sticker
It's not the fan or a sticker for me, it's a coil buzzing sound. I can hear it shift volume/intensity when I go into and out of menus in Miles Morales. It clearly sounds like a variation in current.
When I'm the PS5 menu I don't hear it; it's only when I start a game that it appears and it never stops until I go back in the main PS5 menu even if I don't completely close the game itself.
It's even more audible from the back of the console.
I didn't have that on launch. I don't know if one of the early updates could have changed something with power distribution to start that but it wasn't a day one problem for me.
Mines running lovely, certainly no sounds like being described.
My PS5 is indeed making similar noises to that in the video. Not impressed.
Tried mosquito spray?
@huyi my personal opinion, which is by no means representative:
I buy first day consoles, so I can enjoy the games for the whole life cycle. My last two consoles (Wii, Switch) had no day-1 issues at all. For switch, all the issues at hand are still present (Joy Con Drift), sonI don't regret buying it day one.
Also the issues for the PS4 are mostly still present (loud fan), so buying a later itteration is so warranty to get a console without issues. Other issues are mainly software driven and can be patched out. So, until I don't have a really bad experience like buying day 1, crashing the console and not getting refund or a replacement, I'm not "afraid" of buying day 1.
Lake I said, my personal opinion!
My PS5 Digital Edition has this issue, sadly. It's not even close to how loud and annoying PS4 fans were, but it's irritating if you're playing in low volumes at night to not wake up anyone.
An entirely misleading headline that does nothing to help shed light on the real issues at play.
The 99% of people complaining about PS5 coil whine are suffering from...coil whine, not a loose label interfering with a fan. Implying otherwise only serves to cover Sony's continued attempt to maximise profit by cutting corners.
@Zuljaras
This person, give them a medal please.
@Sizuhjee I doubt that people are even seeing the image. Some still think that the coil whine comes from the fan ...
