It's no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a catastrophic effect on game development for the past year. As studios work from home under difficult circumstances, in-person tasks such as motion capture simply cannot happen in the traditional sense. This means the games themselves are taking longer to make, forcing publishers into delaying titles that have some semblance of a release window attached. Avalance Software just pushed Hogwarts Legacy to 2022, and it looks like this situation is going to repeat itself over and over again as the year progresses. Following the delay, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier even came out and said it was just the first push back of many for games slated to release in 2021. The experiences you were hoping to have this year are no longer guaranteed.
So, what other PlayStation 5 games could be delayed past 2021? Sony's first-party output has been shaping up very nicely for the next set of 365 days, and while that could still become a reality, God of War Ragnarok feels like the prime answer to that question. We scoffed at the thought of it coming out this year upon its announcement, and the likelihood of it not happening becomes more apparent by the day. We simply cannot envision a world where Sony Santa Monica's next big project launches this year. But then what of Horizon Forbidden West? Gran Turismo 7? Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart? We reckon the latter will safely make it to launch — Insomniac has repeatedly stated it'll arrive during the PS5 release window — but it could go either way for the other two right now.
Then there are the big third-party hits such as Resident Evil Village, Deathloop, Far Cry 6, and Gotham Knights. The only one with a confirmed release date is Bethesda's console exclusive, with the rest simply promised for 2021. Capcom's ninth mainline entry in the survival horror saga has always felt like a game releasing in the first half of this year, so we think that one is still fairly nailed on for 2021. The latest Ubisoft open-worlder too since it was originally scheduled for next month. Back4Blood is dated right now for late June — will that need a bit more time to get into proper shape? Will Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 manage to convince us it's a title that will ever come out and hit 2021?
At least there's some light at the end of the tunnel. During its CES 2021 digital event, Sony slapped a release window on a number of exciting projects. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is said to arrive in March, Solar Ash is coming in June, and then Little Devil Inside a month later. There's also Ghostwire: Tokyo and Stray in October, all of which will be supported by the usual blockbusters. You just know that EA and Activision will work their socks off to get Call of Duty and FIFA out in time. Of course, these projections are very much subject to change.
What we're trying to say that 2021 shouldn't be seen as complete doom and gloom. Yes, it does indeed look like many more PS5 games are set to be delayed, following in the footsteps of Hogwarts Legacy. But then there are just as many titles that will cause a stir this year. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a game many Push Square readers appear to be hyped about and that's out in two months! Throw in Disco Elysium: The Final Cut and Returnal and March looks set to be a bumper month. Take it slow and steady, work on your backlog. 2021 can still be a great year for games even if not every Sony first-party blockbuster hits its scheduled date.
What other PS5 games do you think will be delayed out of 2021? Are they any smaller experiences you recommend checking out that could take their place? Share your thoughts on this conundrum in the comments below.

A few probably will, but I don't like to dwell on it. They'll be ready when they're ready.
God of War seems a certainty to miss 2021, Horizon Forbidden West may be another candidate though I'm fairly confident we'll see Ratchet and Clank. This is going to be the norm in the industry for a year or so with the ongoing pandemic and the reaction to Cyberpunk
As above more than happy to wait as opposed to getting a broken/rushed game!
I think we will still get GT7, R&C, HFW but as noted I seriously doubt GoW will come out this year although it depends if they re-use assets as we didn't get to visit all the realms last time out so maybe as the real ending (I wont spoil it) was still set in the same world/map!!
There is no way God of War is coming out this year that's pure BS.
The fact you cited a muppet from bloomberg made me skip the article straight to the comments.
On topic, my money is on a gt7 delay
All of them I would imagine.
@PSfanboy1992 I think your right I think also HZD2 will be 2022 also.
@MrGilly69 that “muppet’s” Rolodex is one of the thickest in the industry. I’m not a fan of everything the man does but he puts his money where his mouth is and certainly knows things. I wouldn’t dismiss everything he has to say.
Problem is, they surely could've foreseen this, no? At least it confirms that God of War is ''close'' to release and coming relatively ''soon''. But if it's a May 2022 title, they never should've said 2021. And if Horizon gets delayed to 2022, they should really fix their marketing.
R&C, Horizon and GT7 this year isn't too much to ask I think.
There's no real point to rush with Sony exclusives, as PS5 itself will be in shortage this year. So there is not enough download base to sell these products.
I think the release date of the PS5 console might be pushed to beyond 2025. Haven't see one in stores, ever!
INVISIBLE CONSOLE NINJA APPROVED
I think most games will be delayed across all consoles to some degree.
Then again would you want to release top AAA games when you can’t even buy a console to play them on. I know some games are on the the old consoles as well, maybe that’s why they are, due to shortage of next generation consoles.
@Octane I didn't look, does PS still have BG&E2 for 2018? 🤣
R&C has to be August at the latest.
Agreeing w/ HFW later this year, GoW 2 in 2022.
I’m ok with all this, still playing Valhalla. Waiting for cyberpunk to be fully patched, got bugsnax, Astros playroom, Greedfall, etc...
God of war and horizon one of them will come this year to represent the goty winning streaks sony is on.word up son
I think it’s a matter of consoles at the minute let alone games.
The minute a UK retailer gets stock of any console even the series s, in minutes if not hours they are gone. It’s the Switch that amazes me, considering it’s half way through its life cycle and didn’t release much games wise, discounting remakes.
It keeps getting regular stock this year and then sold out.
I think both God of War AND Horizon will be delayed. They’ll probably delay one to the end of the year and then delay it again to 2022. I know their tricks... 👀 but I suppose it’s better than releasing an unfurnished game cough Cyberpunk 2077 cough
I am set till April. So that means I'll start looking again in May, hopefully they have it figured out.
Jan - Medium PC
Feb - Ys NOX PS4
March - Returnal PS5
March - Kena PS5
April- Outriders PS5
April - Nier Replicant PS4
Why BC and having a healthy Playstation 3rd party support is so great. You are not depending on 1 big 1st party game in a 3 month window. Some can drop off.
I think both will be out this year.
God of War 99% I'd say
I’m desperate to play Gran Turismo 7, so that will no doubt get a huge delay.
God of War is 1000000% getting delayed to 2022. I'd bet money on that. I can see Ghostwire getting delayed to 2022 too.
I think Ratchet will get delayed to fall, and maybe HFW getting delayed to spring 2022.
Who knows WHAT'S up with Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines 2? I think it was supposed to drop early last year, and then all the staff changes, and now, silence. (Hey Liam! You guys fancy yourselves as investigative journalists, could you run an undercover operation and find out how it's going? Thanks!)
I'm just over here hoping for some good news on Lego Star Wars....
I don't mind if HZ2 is delayed only if the PS4 version is cancelled and they will be using the time to take full advantage of the power of the PS5.
Ooooiooh
OoooooooooH
Someone or something.
Look at the sky
It burns
Ooooh
Elden ring
God of War seems to be the obvious choice. I can see Horizon getting delayed to next year, since they probably want that game in particular to be flawless.
Has there been anything but a name to Gran Turismo 7?
I don't think Ratchet & Clank will be delayed, but I've been wrong before. If this and Horizon aren't out until '22, I'll probably wait till then to get a PS5.
I think we'll have Ratchet by May, and Horizon will be pushed into autumn, but both will release this year. God of War will shift into 2022 - the release date was already very ambitious. Wouldnt be surprised to see Final Fantasy 16 delayed to 2022 (even if it doesn't have a release date attatched currently).
I think we should get used to these delays - there are bound to be more that slip into 2022 and beyond
Jason and the golden book sneezed. Its official, Days Gone 2 is delayed. First delay in a long series of delays.
The pandemic was well underway when Sony announced the PS5 and the games, and their release windows. I assume they took into account that the pandemic would be ongoing, as that was obvious at the time.
Some mention GT7 gets delayed, but there is no voice acting, motion capture and so on. These things acts for people coming physically to a location. What am I overseeing that games that use this will not get delayed, but a racing game does?
Nonetheless, I think it will have a lot of impact on a lot of games, but less on games that are already almost finished.
@LiterallyDoNotCare Hi there friend.
That honestly made laugh out loud 😂
The thirst for ANY Elden Ring news is real.
Thanks for the post.
As for the delays, yeah, there are going to be alot of them, especialy after the Cyberpunk 2077 launch debacle.
No company wants to go trough that kind of situation.
And the pandemic were livin in does not help one bit.
Hopefully, some of them won´t be delayed for eternity.
"Deep Down" style.
Cheers, stay safe and happy gaming to us all
Just like with PS4, the first truly great exclusive came 3byears after launch with Uncharted 4. I see GoW Rg coming in early 2023
In truth, I hope both GoW and HFW get delayed as 1) I don't want them to be rushed, both for the sake of the devs and the game, and 2) I feel like it increases the chances of them being next gen only, which I think more studios are probably (or should be) considering after Cyberpunk.
Mark my words: R&C 2021. HFW 2022. GoW Rg 2023. Put it in stone.
One blessing from Cyberpunk - no studio wants to be the next one. No Hogwarts 2077, or God of War 2077...for at least a few months, maybe a whole year, we'll remember Cyberpunk and give developers some extra time without extra hassle.
The public has short memories, and I don't expect that to last into 2022 (it's not like Cyberpunk was the first game to release half-baked), but for now studios should have some good will if they assure people they want a quality release. They'll just have to DELIVER on the quality when they do hit their eventual release dates.
If they get pushed back no big deal there are worse things now I have so much games too finish. And the safety of the developers are more important then my wish of playing a game take your time.
Since Horizon was already pegged for the second part of the year, plus these games normally get delaid, plus covid, yeah it's almost a sure bet we'll see it in early 2022.
Basically any game could be delayed past 2021- just look at how Halo was delayed 10 months already. But then, isn’t that better than a Cyberpunk situation?
I on don’t think ratchet and clank will be hit by lacking office , collaborative or mocap work. I’m hoping GT7 has all its track and car telemetry and models and sounds fine. They’re the only two games I care much about currently anyway..
@GamesVanDerBeek I’m hearing you. Feels like this game has been in development longer than The Last Guardian 😫
As with many others, I have lost my enthusiasm for predicting when games will be released. I would much rather all of them take as long as they want and release the game how it was intended.
I'm gonna bet that Horizon Forbidden West, The Stanley Parable Redux, and Windjammers 2 get delayed, but I am quite okay with that. Not every game can recover from a bad launch. They're forever branded and they don't have the army of fanboys defending it.
Off topic, but has anyone seen the game called The Last Faith? It looks really great and i was just wondering if anyone had seen a release window for it.
Sorry to post something off topic, but i havent seen anything about this game on push square yet so didnt really have anywhere to ask this question. 😀
It's complete guesswork but I don't think Horizon is coming this year tbh.
The cynical side of me says that delaying games does no harm at all in terms of sales and actually helps give it a marketing boost and publicity via more headlines, increased excitement etc.
@Octane I think the announce these games to soon. They should wait until they are within 3 or 4 months of being finished. Every game I want to play has been delayed.
@BleedingDreame That's a very short notice though. Nintendo does that, but the problem is that there's never something to look forward to. Except for Metroid and Zelda, which they've announced way too early as well. It's probably the reason I've never been excited about the Switch line-up, because there's nothing to look forward to. Okay, yeah, a $60 Wii U release this month iirc, but that's it.
One year in advance is also possible. And under good management you can set and achieve those dates.
"What Other PS5 Games Could Be Delayed Past 2021?"
Considering COVID, the fact that developing games seems to be taking longer and longer, more frequent delays and the recent high profile example of how NOT to do it by releasing too early.
ALL OF THEM.
@Mostik I did think the map was very clever, so if they've come up with a creative way of using it again I'd definitely love that! We never see open or semi open world games revisiting the same land within a franchise and I think that could have some potential.
A shame but... you know, I would rather people stay safe and do the best work possible. There are still lots of great titles coming this year and I have a backlog bigger than an elephants... trunk.
@PossibLeigh Absolutely, it always felt like with GoW the other realms would come as DLC but they could visit them in Ragnarok if they do intend to use the same map. It was a gorgeous world and I would have no issue jumping back in as long as it was expanded far enough to feel new.
horizon forbidden west i think will be march 2022 - i reckon there'll be a PS5 special edition that includes a remaster of zero dawn. all we've seen of GoW is a logo - defo 2022. ratchet will make it, they've showed gameplay since last summer, i'd say it's been close to finished for a while now. apr-may would be my guess. if gran turismo 7 is also coming to PS4, i think it'll be out this year.. if it's PS5 only, i don't think so, there won't be enough PS5s on the market this year to sell the usual kind of numbers that GT posts to justify its development budgets.
If there is one thing Cyberpunk has taught us is that delays are not a bad thing! I didn't even know Harry Potter had a release date to get pushed back. God of War is one I feel may not hit 2021.
@deathaxe Thanks for that! I still like the Lego games. Especially Lego City Undercover. I know that people say about them not being overly innovative, but when you do something well, why go out of your way to mess that up? Although, I just feel lit in my bones, this one will be very good.
Makes you wonder why they didn't just delay PS5 till end of 2021 when it actually had some games and ones that are not far off
I hope nothing will get delayed.
Sony need the exclusive content now more
The acquisition everywhere in the industry
Should worry thier ass
