If you haven’t been following the news this week – and, with how depressing it’s been of late, we wouldn’t blame you – then you may not know that a ship as long as the Empire State building has got stuck in the Suez Canal in Egypt. This is an important trade route from Asia to Europe, and has caused a backlog of boats which threatens to further disrupt an already fragile supply chain.
Sony has been battling with semiconductor shortages caused by the coronavirus pandemic for months now, and while it’s managed to more or less match PlayStation 4’s hardware shipments, demand for PlayStation 5 has far exceeded supply. While semiconductors are generally transported through air – and thus are unlikely to be affected by the scenes unfolding on the Suez Canal – Business Insider reports that the events are almost certain to increase product shipping times.
There’s a knock-on effect at play here: ships currently stranded will be late to return to ports in Asia to pick up new products, resulting in a backlog of goods that may take months to correct. It’s unclear how directly Sony’s next-gen system will be impacted by all of this, but with stock already short, this additional complication is unlikely to help matters at all.

If the title wasn’t already taken, I would have named the PS5 launch: “A Series of Unfortunate Events.”
To be fair, I think we’re going to see a lot more important things being affected by the Suez Canal being blocked than PS5s being delayed 😂
Who gives a flying damn about stranded PS5’s, when there are probably stranded people on board, as well.
I feel sorry for Push Square there are complaints when the subject is not about the Playstation......and complaints when the subject is about Playstation 🤦♂️
@BloodNinja 25 people are on the ship but they’re safe and will remain on the ship as long as they stay safe. Supposedly they can get off the ship if they need to. Can’t say the same for those precious PS5s though. 🤷🏾♂️
@BloodNinja yeah that’s the real thing to worry about
@Number09 Haha, we're used to it!
For the record, obviously we respect and appreciate much worse things than PS5 stock will be affected by this!
Was wondering when PS would get around to this. 😉
For me, I like news that's at least marginally related. If PS5 were sitting on store shelves unsold, like the Playstation Classic which went from $100 to $20 in about 3 months, or the PS 3D Display which went from $300 to $50 in about the same amount of time, then yeah, who cares if more stock isn't reaching the shelves in a timely manner. But w/ the PS5 demand currently far out numbering supply, even a delay of a week is going to affect people.
About 75 days until Ratchet & Clank, which people are going to want to play, and unlike a lot of other PS5 games, it isn't on PS4 or isn't a port of an old game. It's new new. Gotta make the PS5 available to those who want it. This matters.
Thats it i think i'm just gonna write off getting a PS5 or Series X at this point i'll just wait till next year.
As far as I am concerned, Sony used air freight in delivering PS5s at launch. So I don’t see any major concern regarding the issue raised in this article.
@rjejr If internally Sony is not satisfied by PS5 hardware sales by around mid/late May I could see Ratchet & Clank be delayed a bit. Unlike Returnal which will likely suffer from the $70 price point and end up on PS+ soon after launch, Ratchet & Clank is a system seller.
You all know that, come Monday, everyone, their mother, her uncle and his dog will be buying toilet paper because of this.
Not food. Not medicine. Toilet paper.
Theres more important things than some ps5s on that boat like the lives of 25 people and stuff like the incoming toilet paper shortage. Can i wipe my butt with the ps5s?
@BloodNinja people can dismbark and at worst, have a place to sleep and eat. Livestock on the other hand will likely die from stress or be slaughtered then they can't be delivered on time.
@hi_drnick Hopefully everyone is safe.
@Grumblevolcano "Ratchet & Clank is a system seller"
Well it's selling me my system, everything else I want to play I can play on PS4. And I already have a Switch collecting dust b/c I played half of it's games on my Wii U. I just bought a 75" 4k HDR tv 13 days ago so I can pay that off before I have to pay $70 for R&C in June. Got a new Playstation credit card and everything. 😎 We're ready.
"I could see Ratchet & Clank be delayed a bit"
That thought did cross my mind while I was typing my comment, but I'm hoping they release it on time just to have SOMETHING for their "Sony knows NEXT GEN" bravado. Which so far looks like only bravado to me. Still waiting on a confirmation for GoW being only Next Gen since we know HFW is a dual release. I suppose first we need a confirmation that it's actually called "Ragnarok" since there still seems to be some discussion on the name. 🤷♂️
One of these days 2020 is going to end. My wife & I each get our first vax shot tomorrow. I don't really want to, don't enjoy being a guinea pig, but if it gets the world moving forward, well gotta do my part. Suez canal got a ship stuck, puh-lease. 😝
This in another episode of "Reasons Why Sony Should Have Delayed the Launch of the PS5"
Well, at least they have that one bulldozer working on it. Shouldn't take more than a decade or so to dislodge it considering the vast manpower they were showing on the news.

It's okay guys...we got this...
I'm gonna give you advice. Buy Nintendo while waiting for PS5. You won't regret. I have mz PS5 at home but it's turned off for a month now. Not that i don't have games on it or i play something better, but i am excited of new machine.
@lacerz LOL! That's what I'm talking about!
It's funny how opinions change so fast. I a few weeks ago I would be saying the launch should be delayed and I'll wait to next year before I got a PS5. Then last week I got my PS5 and I'm loving it. This is the first weekend I got to use it as away with work all last week. Sorry if this makes me a bad person but the ps5 is great and I hope everyone can get one soon.
@LordSteev
What amazes me is that, not only is this ship as long as the Empire State Building, the tallest building in NYC until the Twin Towers, but it's stacked SO HIGH.
@Darth_Stofi
I love the PS5, but after bagging one, the PS4 is just fine. There should be no FOMO on this one. Get it when you can, but don't fret if you can't.
@lacerz
Yeah, courageous effort for that lone 'dozer, but I have a sneaking suspicion they're going to have to recruit a bit more help.
@LordSteev
They will need to do something. I'm in Supply Chain, and although I'm in the States, I rely on Lux and Milan A LOT. This is a problem.
First world problem
@BloodNinja no one is stranded aboard it lol, there's the people required to stay and that's it
I have my PS5 and my RTX 3080, definitely sitting pretty right now, don't really get why people are in such a hurry for getting a ps5 though there really isn't much that's absolutely worth buying it for now, basically a ps4 without the media server
There's estimated to be about 20 ships full of live animals stuck out there. To be honest I'm more concerned about them.
@deathaxe
I'm in manufacturing where a lot of castings are much cheaper coming from China. We ship a lot by boat. Although the States can have the Chinese goods shipped east to California, the availability of containers is becoming an issue.
@Dr_ENT launch is quite different from now, don't you think so? In terms of importance at least.
Its almost like some sort of entity is doing everything it can to prevent me from getting a ps5
@Judal27
I have a PS5. I passed my PS4 Pro to my son. His PS4 is now my bedroom console, replacing my PS3. In terms of generational leaps, if you have a PS4, you are good.
@BloodNinja They are not stranded, the boat is. They can be saved easily by chopper or with a ladder into the towing ships. They just aren't abandoning their work. There is a ship with millions in goods. It would be disastrous to lose it.
With all this said, i doubt this affects ps5 shipment much and likely affects Xbox just as much. I bet they are both manufactured in China or nearby. These one sided stories are starting to smell fishy. All manufactured goods by ship will have to travel across Africa delaying the shipments. It's not a PS5 only thing.
@nessisonett doubt that very much. All we care about are PS5s, sorry.
@get2sammyb I've had hard times getting new launch console systems in the past, such as both PS3 and PS4, but the current one is actually worrying me to the point that I start wondering if I will be able to play the next COD which probably will be released come November? I mean, if I'm still just stuck with my PS4, and thousands of others like me, and being unable to purchase and play the next COD, this will affect the sales I presume? Or do you know if Activision and other companies are due to ship new games for both platforms through this year?
@MidnightDragonDX it’s free.
All I can think about from this whole canal incident is that some poor SOB is definently losing his job.
@lacerz Oh yeah, I'm not actually in a hurry to buy one lol. But i actually want a ps5 so i can give my mom my ps4. She's been using the PS3 for movies but they recently discontinued an app she used, so now she has less to watch
Plus seeing and hearing all the improved performances, i kinda want to just play my whole backlog on there now just for the improvements
