There are concerns about PlayStation’s first-party output in enthusiast circles, but in the real-world Sony continues to dominate awards ceremonies. The DICE Awards – which are considered the Oscars of the games industry – granted an incredible eight gongs to internally developed titles, with timed exclusive Final Fantasy VII Remake also scoring one.
Sucker Punch’s historical sandbox Ghost of Tsushima took home four awards, while The Last of Us: Part II won two, and Dreams and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales scooped one apiece. Roguelike Hades was the biggest winner on the night, taking home the coveted Game of the Year gong and an overall total of five awards.

i suprised The Last of Us Part 2 dint win GOTY at D.I.C.E Awards.
Domination!
Fully expect nect years to be the same unless BOTW2 comes out before
Congratulations to Hades! My favorite game of last year. Well deserved!
Nice for Sony, but those are just the tip.
Month after month always had something new to play on PS4 - It is just a flood of good games from all sides.
Waiting for the eventual PC Game Pass release of Hades (just like Spiritfarer and Genesis Noir) Basically where I play Indies now.
Well deserved from Hades. They've really racked up a lot of goty awards from major sources. Now port to playstation already so I can earn trophies!
I like the Hades game but game of the year? Nah.
Never heard of Hades but it must be the greatest game ever created to win GOTY against TLoU2, GoT and FFVII.
Just watched a few gameplay videos on YouTube and Hades kinda looks like something we might get in a particularly poor month of PS+...
Bit of a controversial choice but maybe you have to play it? 👀
13 Sentinels Aegis Rim getting nominated at the very least. I'm happy with that. GoT and FF7 remakes are my 2020 games and glad seeing them both winning especially GoT.
👻 ghost of tshushima for the win.best game of 2020.word up son
My personal GOTYs were Tsushima, FFVIIRe and Miles Morales, so I'm glad to see they all got a little love.
Most of these I agree with. I’m shocked that FFVII Remake won out over Persona 5 Royal, though personally, I agree with it. I loved TLoU2, but no way is that story better than 13 Sentinels!
@fR_eeBritney Definitely something you have to actually play to appreciate
@fR_eeBritney It’s an awesome game. And not a controversial choice at all. Hades has won many, many awards.
I am surprised that Miles Morales was included in these awards. I mean, it was a fun game, but I didn't feel like it was a standout.
Also, as much as I loved Ghost of Tsushima, I do think Ori and the Will of the Wisps had a stronger soundtrack.
Regardless, congratulations to Sony for a strong 2020. Top-notch game releases throughout the entire year.
2021 is going to be slim pickings for everyone with all these game delays, though!
@fR_eeBritney it isn’t. I agree with you it looks like one of those random PS Plus games.
I don’t agree with most of these awards.
@Odium Persona 5 Royal is a re-release and is the exact same game outside of what is basically DLC. You can complete the game the same way as you did in 2017 with the endings and all. Final Fantasy 7 is a complete overhaul and new experience
I’ve never played animal crossing nor sackboy a big adventure. But to me it seems like sackboy would be more fun with family than the former. To me it looks like a reskinned super Mario 3D world from the Wii U. I can’t find my switch so I’d never know.
@Akurusu that’s a good point. I just know how obsessed people are with it. I’ve always been a bigger FF fan than Persona, so I’m not complaining one bit.
How does Last of Us part 2 get all these stories of the year awards? The story was the weakest part of that game, it jumped backwards and forwards far too much, and the twist should not have occurred within the first hour of gameplay, it made us hate a character before we even had chance to get to know her. She was quite a cool character too, her gameplay bits were fun.
The story on Ghost of Tsushima was much more engaging though. His battle between following the Code and being the Ghost was told a lot better. Its a bit like music in the 80's, when Ultravox's Vienna was beaten to UK number one by "Shaddup your face".
@fR_eeBritney And The Last of Us Part 2 looks like a walking zombie simulator. Shouldn’t judge something if you haven’t played it.
@TuckNorris85 Don’t waste your time trying to argue about the story. All the fans of the game are going to do is call you homophobic or a hater regardless of how good your arguments are.
Racing game of the year Dirt 5... well allright ehm... no
@Akurusu Walking Zombie Simulator......really?! Say what you want about the game, but the aesthetics graphically is a marvel.
Hades cleaned up! My personal GOTY right there.
Nice, beside tlou 2 win outstanding achievement in story, I have no problem with it. I don't think I choose hades as my game of the year though, I like ghost of tsushima more
Although it's kind of outstanding that I hate tlou2 story so much that I'm not interested not only on the game but the studio (ND) as well. So yeah, it's kind of outstanding lol.
@TuckNorris85
Because even though it was a really messy story with cringe YA-esque dialogue from most of the characters, it did take a lot of risks storywise, and it was a really unique story.
I don't think I have ever played a game where I felt such joy watching my "friends" die, and despite the absolutely garbage tier dialogue, it is still a very memorable and interesting story. Albeit, pretty cliche with its' overall messaging. I mean if you've seen a spaghetti western or a Kurosawa samurai film you'll have seen this revenge story play out. At least from Ellie and Abby point of view.
From Joel's, it's about a man that tries to find redemption, and woman, Ellie, who finally sees that he succeeded in finding it. His life was worth something, and he died for it, but he had no regrets, and he would do what he did again because he knew there was no other option.
And I think that's why TLOU2's story gets a lot of attention. It's Joel's redemption arc, and Ellie's acknowledgement at the end of the game of that redemption which leads to her forgiving Joel, and maybe making her life actually mean something.
That's pretty damn good, and I wouldn't have put that together if I didn't absolutely *****ing hate almost every character in Abby's story (besides, Lev, Yara, and Owen). The player hating these garbage bags of blood the game calls characters is the reason it works so well.
Now if only 70 percent of the dialogue didn't make me want to stab myself in the ears with hot pokers, and the characters in Ellie's story (Jessie mostky) where more fleshed out, I would consider TLOU2's story on par with TLOU1.
As Joel said in TLOU2 "There was a sequel...wasn't as good".
I feel that Cyberpunk 2077 is missing from a lot of those categories, especially character, music, audio and animation.
@Constable_What oh the dialogue was very YA-ey, I just never had that feeling when playing Ghost, one of the reasons I prefer that to TLOU2.
Don't get me wrong, the game is excellent, 8/10. But the story is really the reason I wouldn't give it 10.
@TuckNorris85 I wouldn't give it a 10 either honestly. I'm right there with you with an 8. It would be a 9 for me if there was Factions multiplayer.
I'm just saying I can see why it would get awards for its' story. There are parts where it really shines, but the godawful dialogue, the pacing, some uneven and inconsistent character motivations, and minor niggling plotholes really hold the experience down in my opinion.
I can see this story being as influential as MGS2. I mean it seems like it was inspired partly by that game's story to me.
And I don't care what anyone says, MGS2 is a masterclass in story-telling that is as socially relevant then as it is now. Maybe even more so. Genius.
@wiiware one particular story element had me feeling like Demi Lavato in a frozen yoghurt shop. But the game is beautiful, you can’t deny that.
@sawaoyamanaka....... Yep I have to agree there.... I think the Dice Awards should be stripped of the oscars' status, out of all awards ceremonies for games released last year this list of nominations feels like doctor it's like they chose their favorite in each category and grouped their favourite with games that have no chance of winning. In terms of Character in don't think any game character tops Abby yet Miles take it..... I mean come on......... The Dice awards are a little underwhelming
This is actually one of the few sets of awards I can agree with across the board overall. Lots of familiar nominations, but the games that walked away with the prize for actual gameplay related reasons are the indies, and while Sony won several awards, it was very accurately in categories relating to production and presentation, not relating to gameplay or design, which is very accurate praise for Sony's strengths without fawning over them and glossing over their weaknesses due to the ease of praising their strengths. Well done, DICE!
After Hades, I'm surprised Supergiant Games is still independent. They are ripe for an acquisition, not that I'm a fan of big corporations getting bigger, mind you.
@ecin..... I agree too, out of all awards shows/ceremonies these DICE awards are the lamest..... The variety of nominations is shocking....... There is no way in terms of characterisation Miles Morales is better than Abby
P5 Royal should have taken the role playing crown - At least fans rated it the best game of 2020!
@TuckNorris85... Maybe that was the point........ To actually get the player to be emotionally invested so as to invoke feeling of anger thus fostering the games theme that revenge is never really a good thing in the skeem of things unless you want to burn the whole world.
In contrast to most game characters who are mostly there to service the player either by being part of the story or being a supporting character.
The other character in video game history which I can remember who does not service the interest of the player is Trico from The Last Guardian.
In votrast everyone video game protagonist just jocks us the players(i.e. They are there to give us video game BJ's, stroke our egos and only exist to keep us in ganged and don't they own personality).
Contrast that to both Abby and Trico, who do their own thing in their own time and really don't care about the players' intentions.
This is what makes them stand out as video game character's
@Akurusu..... That's reaching and you know it.
I can tell immediately from anyone playing TLOUS II is a top notch superior games, just like you can tell that Cyberpunk is an overhyped graphically intense game that is at best generic without playing CP2077.
Everyone who likes Hades always mentions that you have to play it to get it...... Which says a lot about the game.
We must also remember that the PC Master besides foaming over GPS, pixels, over clocking, refresh rate, cooling systems, ram, processors, SSD and so on only have crumbs to pick from for games, hence anything that comes along slight better than the rest of the drivel get overhyped to the Alpha Centeuari star system.
For example Kentucky Route Zero and Disco Elysium will never get the same fever they got from the PC croud from the PS community and this is because PS community is used to high quality and best of the class gaming.
Pc gaming has the best hardware period but the games are not up to scratch, whereas PS may lack in hardware compared to PC but when it comes to games Playstation is the G. O. A. T system of gaming, the amount and quality of games on Playstation has not competition in the entire industry for the past 25-27 years of gaming
@Constable_What.....
But Raiden is still a ***** protagonist to play...... The controversy with MGS2 is not the story as we really could give a sh** about story in 2001/2002 we got pissed because Kojima knew we want to play as Snak3 so bad but He gave us Raiden. THERE'S 4th wall and then there is BS and Riaden is still BS to this day Except in MGS Rising
@NEStalgia..... MILES Morales winning best character instead of Abby (panderic to the gaming macho crowd) and CP2077 being nominated(pandering to the PC Master race as it's currently the PC graphics card advertiser and hence only game that make PC relevant because of the high textures) invalidates everything you just said and also invalidates the awards. This makes the awards controversial.
Also Ghosts can't hold a candle to Ori's soundtrack, but then Ori did not get endorsed by a whole city so there is that.
Like i said before, out of all awards shows for games released last year the DICE awards are a disgrace, Apart from TLOU, FF7R, GOT and Hades, every other nominee is nominated in a category they have no chance of winning, I mean really is Dirt5 the best racing game released in 2020?
So I expected more from DICE by they are always controversial like awarding Untitle Goose Game game if the year as there is no release year where Untitle d Goose Game become game of the year, that just Dice being controversial like the Oscar's blatantly denying Leonard Di Caprio his deserved Oscar's of over 30 years, still unbelievable that Leonard only has an Oscar for the Revenent.
Doom Eternal not the best action game? And Ori didn‘t win anything, this is sad.
@GREGORIAN I liked Raiden in MGS2, I liked playing as Raiden in MGS2, He plays almost no different to Snake in the Tanker Mission, and even as a kid, I cared about the story after playing MGS1.
People that still complain about Raiden 20 years later, deserved Raiden, and also he wasn't a bad character at all in MGS2. As a matter of fact, he and Solidus' interactions at the end would not have paid off nearly as well if playing as Solid Snake.
Raiden is ass in MGS4 though.
@GREGORIAN Some disagreement, some agreement with you. I can't say Miles necessarily deserved "best character", either. He's extremely likable but that's about all he has going for him. And he's not an original character at all, he's an existing comic character. OTOH, I wouldn't give it to any of the TLoU2 characters either, and will argue to the death with the PS community about the virtues of that game. My opinion of the game remains that it's well presented, with so-so gameplay, and one dimensional characters in what amounts to an adolescent fiction drama, and that its cinematography is it's primary asset. I know half the people here will pile on me for that, so no need to argue that point, but my opinion of it is where it is.
I can't disagree on Ori though, that is an absolutely monumental soundtrack, much as I like Ghosts, and it's criminal it doesn't get recognized more than it does.
And the politics of the Oscars has no equal. From my perspective it's the only award show that didn't pander to the TLoU2 hype train and actually looked at other games this year, so it seems more genuine than the copy and paste TLoU love-fest of earlier awards shows where I felt even if they had a PlayStation bias, GoT deserved a much more serious look than the one trick pony of TLoU2, but the hype is what it is. But I certainly wouldn't doubt that other politics were in play for DICE.
@Constable_What...... MGS2 not bombing is due to Kojima being at the top of the game and us being enthralled by a superstar dev. Similar to Maradona getting away with nonsense because of his Godly footballing skills. We moan at Neymar for diving cause he has not really achieved to his potential yet we let Ronaldo CR7 get away with because of his higher standing.
So no MGS2 was anything bu great, the first level is definitely out of this world whereas the rest of the game ever the opening level with Snake tanks.
It's the same reason the game ranks low and why the is constant request for MGS remake and not Sons Of Liberty. MGS2 survived because of the success of MGS.
Death Stranding showed Kojima that we still hold him in high regards but he will not get away with another Raiden moment hence the sales.
@GREGORIAN You are objectively wrong.
@NEStalgia...... I also can't disagree with you on the other awards shows, as much as I love Sony and being a fully fledged PS fan boy, all of them became Sony Mascot shows its like they were afraid to say to Sony "your games are fantastic but someone else did a better game". But then again those awards shows also included a lot of fan involvement and Sony has over 100million+ Ps4's in the wild which muddles those awards shows whereas Dice is the industry pros with no gamers involved which is why I expected more balance and truer recognition.
But at least they didn't bow down to Sony.
But then again isn't DICE give Miles a totally underserd awards also then bending over backwards to Sony as in like: " We didn't give TLOU2 the gong like all other awards shows, but we gonna give Spiderman cause we know you have lots of cash invested in it and it's a media darling and fan favorite" , So they are still pandering to Sony like the other awards shows as Miles had no business being nominated for anything and CP2077 should never have even been included or considered, cause are Dice as industry pros saying its okay to release unfinished mess as games, that to me makes these awards controversial and invalid like Luca Modric winning the Player of the year or Ronald and Messi being exclusive winners of the shambolic Barlodon for a decade as no one could win it except for CR7 or Messi.
This is scandalous.
Sometimes I wish all awards were like the Maths fields price or the Nobel price where you only get recognized for the work done and not being award just because it's a yearly thing that needs to happen. I mean if we get a year where there no GOTY level games then there should not be a single GOTY award awarded for that year, but that would not happen as award shows are in onthemselvr in that the awards exist to give out an award irregardless of whether there is someone deserving or not.
For example irregardless of the story or gamePLay or whatever, TLOU2 did move gaming forward with the game not locked or limited to being played by seeing able body players only but its probably one of the first game to both cater to able bodied players and players with disability(in this case blind players) and this was something to be recognized, the game should been awards for this as this moves gaming forward and make it an inclusive industry. So the fact that we have CP2077 in the nominations means things like this TLOU2 disable player inclusivity are not even being looked at by industry and broken, unfinishesd, false advertised game is more importany to the industry pro hence the state we have been in since the end of the ps3 generation of releasing games with serious bugs and day 1 patches
@Constable_What.... Okay.... Allow me to Ask you.......... Between MGS, MG2, MGS3, MGS4 which would be a disappointment if Konami were to drop a trailer of a Remaster..............
I can tell you without a shofow of a doubt people would be disappointed if it's Sons Of Liberty and it would probably bomb.
You can even ask Push Square to do A poll, Sons of Liberty was a disappoint.
It's futuristic outlook is only highleted ed or looked at as good because entire game except the opening level was just a shambols, you must remember also this was a PS2 launch title and was hyped to the next closest Solar system and also was the most anticipated PS2 games.
@Constable_What.... Oh and yes Death Stranding was also a bomb. Only kept alive by us dedicated fans of Kojima San.
If Kojima releases anythinh similar to DS then his credit will be finished in the game industry ad we will stop seeing him as maverick genius but a stubborn, deluded lunatic out of touch with reality.
@GREGORIAN lol
@fR_eeBritney Yup, the graphics and animation is really good, if the game updated to 60 fps, it can pass as native ps5 games I think. I definitely replay it if there 60 fps and "no story" patch, bonus point if we can change the characters model to joel and ellie in that no story patch lol.
@TuckNorris85 The woke PC generation we now live in I suspect..
@ORO_ERICIUS Exactly, I did a double-take on Dirt 5 being a finalist for Racing Game of the Year.
Honestly, I haven’t played it but I wanted to buy it and the overwhelming reports of bugs + crashes + general game suckiness made me decide against it.
Even after patches, it became plagued with slowdown that wasn’t there before + it still crashes.... and that’s the PS5 release!
@ApostateMage Maybe they are being generous and will have it in more categories next year when it's actually finished. 🤪
Hades is a good game, no doubt. Tight loop, snappy and responsive, well designed. But is it really deserving of all these awards? The much vaunted integration of progression and narrative left me cold as it pretty much amounted to lots of pointless chatter. I checked out after beating Hades twice, so maybe it kicks into high gear story wise later?
Am I the only one rolling eyes with all these Oscar, awards self back slapping events for publishers? Endless circle of giving power to critics.
I mean it's like we keep getting these all year long.
🙄
Everyone is different and will have different appreciation anyway.
@GREGORIAN Yeah, I can pretty much agree with all of that. Great points all around!
Sony first party dominates DICE Awards... Jim Ryan out!
@GREGORIAN I’d never played a Kojima game prior to Death Stranding and I loved it.
Hades was dope!!!
@GREGORIAN Your comment itself is a bunch of nonsense especially when you say I’m reaching when what I say is true. The walking sim is debatable, but there’s no denying that fans of the game will call people haters and homophobes no matter what is said about the game.
And Holy crap. Your last paragraph is the most pathetic thing I’ve read on this site. I’m not going to be able to take you seriously in the future. If you seriously think that then you must be new to all of this, and if you’re not, you’re ignoring the facts.
