You can’t readily buy a PlayStation 5 here in the UK, but it’s been the best-selling console in the country two months in a row now. As reported earlier in the week, the system has now outsold the lifetime totals of the Nintendo Wii U, PS Vita, and SEGA Dreamcast – a not all together extraordinary feat when you consider those consoles flopped, but it’s managed it in approximately five months with extremely restricted stock.
In fact, March 2021 represented the second best month for PS5 sales in the UK, outpaced only by launch in November. This is all according to GfK Entertainment data, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. As a result of the strong sales, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales continues to perform well – despite also being available on the more readily available and established PS4. It seems many are waiting to get Sony’s next-gen console before picking up the superhero spin-off.
All in all, PS5 is pretty much dominating the hardware space: accessories like the DualSense controller, Pulse 3D Headset, and DualSense Charging Station mean that Sony is also winning the battle for best-selling accessories. Nintendo’s evergreen software arsenal is serving the Switch well, however – despite the hybrid slumping to third place in console sales for the first time in years.

How? How can you sell something that's not there... I mean aside from bitcoin and NFTs.
@GumbaMasta I mean, stock has been coming in, it just sells out immediately. Obviously those sell outs have been enough to make it the best-seller.
Shame they're all sitting in some sweaty bloke's basement in Croydon
Obviously, PS5 is dominating sales and demand worldwide. SX was completely exaggerated in terms of performance and PS5 wasn't given enough credit. The proof is coming out. Plus, games. Services are great, and old games are fantastic, but most ppl buy into a new generation for new, next gen experiences they can't have anywhere else. That and innovation, and Sony is leading in both.
If both XB Series and PS5 had unlimited units the lead for PS5 would be double. Despite the absolute PR barrage by team Xbox, PlayStation continues to deliver irl. That still, atm, outweighs manipulation and propaganda. Actual results. I'm sure this will change, but right now ppl still prefer experiencing good stuff over reading about it, slightly. Plus, u sort of build up credibility when u deliver and dramatically outperform your competition for a decade straight. PlayStation served the public beautifully last gen. The amount of award winners and quality new IP were staggering compared to the competition. Five of the past eight consensus Game of the Year winners were Sony published. Zero were via Microsoft. New IP like HZD, Bloodborne, Tsushima, Spiderman, and Dreams flooded the system. They are still the only one of the big three to legitimately suppport VR and now DualSense and that impressive SSD. Sony has done nothing but deliver for a decade, they have the innovation, games, and performance without having to boast. They deserve to be leading next gen in sales and demand. They've earned it.
I feels so lucky to have ps5 when it launched in my country, my problems is the ssd is just to small and I already filled most of the storage space lol.
I'd rather wait untill there on store shelves tbh I'm not in a rush to get a PS5 my PS4 still doing alright from day1 lol...
Does anyone know/heard when PS5 will be on store shelves out of interest??
@Arugula no it isn't.
PlayStation has outsold Xbox this gen, has greater demand, and they more than doubled Xbox in 2021 revenue according to the latest report. That's pretty easy to understand.
This narrative that every XB Series console is sold out across the world is false. In most of North America and much of the UK, sure, but not elsewhere. There are numerous reports of consoles, particularly Series S on shelves outside those two regions. Numerous friends of mine in countries like Brazil claim that local stores have Series X and S on shelves. Also, marketing and research firms have been reporting since prior to launch that demand was much higher for PS5, much. In fact, though both are difficult to find in NA/UK the stats regarding percentages of ppl who wanted/fulfilled acquiring a PS5 and the difficulty finding one all point towards PS5 being the hotter ticket. The metrics lean towards PS5, the sales, etc. You can continue excusing the numbers and metrics but eventually the numbers will speak for themselves. It happened last gen when Microsoft and Microsoft apologists pointed to the "XB1 is outpacing 360" quote manufactured by Microsoft execs to insinuate success. The result, 360 sold 85+ million units and XB1 is estimated at 50m even. With most of production ceased and phased out in favor of Series S, XB1 might not sniff 55m. That would be more than 30m units difference, yet Microsoft and fans would use that outpacing nonsense as their excuse.
@Shygamer Hey, people have to make money, somehow. If there are people dumb enough to want to pay thousands for a PS5, that's on the buyer.
@TranslucentEye Honestly, I don’t think the PS5 will be widely available on store shelves until well in to 2022.
A lot of people think it will be available in the second half of 2021 but Sony’s production figures from their last financial report do not actually make that look like likely.
@Dekutheevilclown yeah thought as much as you said I did hear 2nd half of 2021 which gave me hope but in reality wasn't going to happen...
Oh well like I said I'm in no rush its only been 5 months since release plenty of time to get one in the end lol
this depresses me us gamers suffer as some nitwit struggles to sell their ps5s because they want to rip people off.
@iamtylerdurden1 xbox series s have been easily available to buy from Curryw in the UK for over a week now. Hardly in demand.
@BloodNinja I feel the same about scalpers. It sucks that they’ve snatched up all the consoles but if idiots are willing to pay double then...🤷🏾♂️
I doubled up on a PS4 when it launched. Bought 2 and sold 1 for close to $900. If I had the funds to do it more I’d do it. No one is forcing the purchase to make the purchase.
@Gremio108 not 100% true anymore because the software sales go up with each restock now.
Most of 'em are at a CEX.
@David187 Actually you're right - I hear he's recently moved to a nice manor in the Chilterns
@Gremio108 🤣🤣
@AhmadSumadi Exactly. I mean, I have to admit, I doubled up on some copies of Mario 3D all stars, so I can't wait for that to pay off. I normally don't do that, but hey, life happens.
NINJA APPROVED
I got a PS5 a couple of months ago and would say I've used it more than I did the PS4 Pro over the last 2 years. I've gotten 5 platinum trophies! Where as PS3 and PS4 generations I had only bothered to get 2. Now I want to fully complete games. I've been enjoying it that much I even signed up to PS now. Playing games in general is better on it than the PS4 Pro because it doesn't sound like a jet taking off. 😂 GOT and other PS4 games are even better playing on the PS5.
The SSD is probably the best part of a PS5 so far. It's not something you really notice, but being able to start a game quickly and have less loading screens is really nice. I can't wait to get more games designed with the SSD in mind.
It seems the Switch is slowing down then?
Nintendo better get that Pro version ready soon, or the Switch will go the way of the Wii; suddenly deflating like a soufflé without warning.
But, people upset over archaic VITA games... it is not “hybrid”... AAA games not worth playing.... it has no GamePass 😉
It is a fantastic console. And the safest bet for the next 8 years when it comes to game selection
PS5 will sell like crazy
You'd be lucky to get one at all here in Ireland. Everytime they get any in they're sold out in minutes, seconds even online.
Wait the Wonderful World of Game Pass is not helping Xbox?
I was lucky enough to get a PS5 in December. I tried multiple times with no success, but finally bagged one through Best Buy...although I had to drive an hour to pick it up.
It's a suitable upgrade to the PS4/Pro, and I loved Astro's Playroom, but if you can't get a PS5...you're fine. If you're a Plus subscriber, grab the monthly additions so you have games Day One outside of Astro, but other than loading times and some spit shine and controller magic, you aren't missing out. Yet.
Absolutely loving my PS5 so far. I have it on every day.
I love my Switch and my Series X too, but PS5 has leaped put of the gates for me with Miles Morales and Demon's Souls at launch.
Control is a pleasure to play with dualsense, and I can't wait for Returnal and Ratchet and Clank.
And Stray. I'm really excited to play Stray. I don't even like cats 🤷♂️🐕
I can see why! It's a great console. Having had it from release day (UK) and now the shiny new consoles glasses have worn off I can still say it's fantastic. The controller however, single handedly makes and breaks the experience! It's features/ functions are brilliant and all but it's so fault prone and once again they've cheaped out on the triggers
After reading this, I am genuinely interested in how many of the worlds PS5s are owned by scalpers. I'm curious now.
The console had never appeared as "Available" ever since last September, except for a few seconds here and there with ridiculously low quantities. So these sales figures don't make any sense, not sure what's going on and who the console is "sold" to.
Practically, the console wasn't launched yet for most of us.
I really appreciate my PS5. Playing Outriders atm I enjoy the almost instant loading for fast travels because you keep doing it. (Also quick rebooting the game if its crashed🤪)
In other "news" article PlayStation is ummm.. losing grounds or something? Can't remember how it was spinned 😄
@TranslucentEye
Honestly even when it's available in store you will have to order and queue for it. The demand is wild and you could wait for years before that changes. Online is the best option for a while and should hopefully be made easier soon but remember the easier it gets to order the easier it gets for casual consumers too, creating even more demand. IMHO
@Eran I got a PS5 a couple of weeks ago. All it takes is following a few people who can give you advanced warning and to just be ready to jump in when the stock goes live. Majority of the consoles are being sold to consumers it just depends how much your willing to stand by right now.
@AdamNovice Sites restock every ~2 weeks with ridiculously low quantities that go away after a few seconds. I tried several times, right at the time a "sale" was alive, never successful. Human being doesn't have much chance to buy, I reckon most sales are by bots. Or just very few lucky people get them each time - but then those "sales" numbers doesn't make any sense to me. How something that's extremely rare and very hard to get can sale so much??
I heard that at the largest "sales" at the US, a few thousands consoles are being sold. Again, how can a few thousands every week be translated to sales figures of 10M??
So. I’m in Australia. PS5 consoles don’t exist. (Neither does PS Now for that fscking matter.) 😾
All consoles are in short supply. Currys have some PS4 stock but you can only buy one per customer! PS5 and Series X are missing. Switch seems to have a reasonable supply so long as you want a pink or turquoise.
@Eran Sony haven't said that they sold ten million, it's probably around 5s tops. It won't be bots that are buying most of the stock, it's down to very heavy demand...that's all.
@AdamNovice Yes, correction, 6M is the sales figure. Still, it's a device that was never there for sale except for a few seconds every ~2 weeks. Go ahead now and search all "official" web sales (Amazon, Target etc) and let me know where I can buy one.
So sorry but I'm not sure I understand why it makes sense to people that a device that you can't purchase had sold so many. Only logical explanation for me is that most purchases are made by scalpers
