Since releasing on 25th May 2021, Biomutant has gone on to sell over one million copies worldwide across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC platforms. The Embracer Group confirmed the news as part of its Q1 2021 financial results, where it was also stated that publisher THQ Nordic recouped all of its costs on the project within the first week of availability. That includes funds for the development of the game itself as well as purchasing developer Experiment 101 along with the Biomutant IP.
The report said: "The main revenue driver in the quarter was the release of Biomutant from our internal studio Experiment 101. So far, the game has sold more than one million copies. The full investment into development and marketing as well as the acquisition cost for Experiment 101 and the IP, was recouped within a week after launch.”
Biomutant was subject to a very mixed reception when it launched after years of development time and anticipation, with criticism for its overly ambitious mechanics and dull combat and open world some of the biggest talking points. In the 4/10 Push Square review, we concluded: "By trying to do so much, Biomutant skipped the part where it built a solid basis to work from. While there's still potential here, Experiment 101's first attempt hasn't realised it." The game still has its supporters, however.

It’s a good game. I really enjoyed it.
Had loads of patches with improvements whilst I was playing. There have probably been loads more since too.
Not for everyone but that’s ok.
Everyone thinks Emracer/THQ is crazy.
I think they know exactly what they’re doing.
Their ceo is a self made multimillionaire.
They’re clearly playing the long game.
Before you know it they’ll have a back catalogue of hundreds of games. Probably open up their own streaming services, absorb larger studios & keep putting out their own stuff.
They just need to stay afloat long enough. Seems like the investors are happy.
Glad to hear this one is doing well! Still waiting on a bigger sale, but will likely pick it up down the road. Too many great games to play 😵💫
Been wondering about this game. Found the physical copy for £34.85 but might wait for a better sale.
Waiting for a price point of $30. Then I'll buy.
I had a really rough time with this but I’m happy to see it’s done well. I would be up for trying a sequel, something that expands on the original in some meaningful ways.
@residentmeevil You're happy a game did so well when it wasn't good?
Did they ever fix the awful Resolution on PS5?
There’s no accounting for taste clearly
Personally I found the game rather delightful and one that got better as it progressed. Haven’t replayed it since the multitude of patches but a few wobbles aside I didn’t have any major issues and enjoyed the world building and the fact that even after completing the main campaign there were still things I’d totally missed. Yes, it’d have no doubt been better as a next gen title but despite all the predictably negative backlash (What doesn’t get ripped apart in this day and age?) it delivered a fun and creative package that entertained through to the finale and the Platinum …
Fair play, a success is a success!
I've had a great time with the game. It's weird and janky but it's also different and interesting compared to bigger budget, bigger dev team "safe" titles. At least what they promised is there and what's there is impressive for a such a small team.
Has this game ever been on sale on PSN? I feel like I was waiting for a sale, and then kind of forgot about it. Still interested to check it out.
I thoroughly enjoyed my 40-50 hours with this game. My advice is stick to the side quests and explore the amazing world. The true fun for me was finding all the rare components to use in the excellent crafting system. The main quests and overall story are poor, and yes the combat is just too easy; mostly because the enemy AI is horrific. But I feel like I definitely got my money out of it and I’d preorder a sequel for sure.
I'll pick it up... With 75% discount at least.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Biomutant and do not regret paying full price for it.
Glad to see the game is selling well since release. I haven't played my copy yet but I plan on it in the future.
I did say that with such a small team, this game had the chance to be a success because it would have had low costs, but selling so many units as well is surely going to make THQ consider a sequel.
The dev team must be really happy their work paid off.
@Fight_Teza_Fight
Considering the absurd amount of old but nostalgic IPs that THQ currently owns like Timesplitters, they could make a killing off of nostalgia alone i feel.
@IonMagi lolno. Still rocking that glorious upscaled 1080p along with micro stuttering and fps drops on PS5. Ironically, the latest patch they dropped in mid-June was the worse. No idea what happened but before 2.05 it was okay.
I did, however, thoroughly enjoy the game despite all of the above.
It's a really great game. My only criticism is that the menus are clunky and too complex, but you get used to it after a while. I had a lot of fun playing it and earning the platinum.
Personally, I really enjoyed the game, and I'm amazed at the amount of criticism and disappointment aimed at the game by people that haven't actually attempted to play it. I really enjoyed the setting, many of the characters and, for the most part, the combat, though it did become repetitive and ultimately too easy. I thought they did well with the game and I would imagine that they will take the feedback (both positive and negative) and bring out a stunning sequel, that, as I did with this game, I will happily pre-order.
I also had a great time with this game. The main narrative aspects were clunky and not very well presented but the solid and engaging gameplay loop of exploring, fighting and looting was great. There is a lot to build off of. Congrats to the team!
I am playing this next after Hades is done kicking my butt.
I actually stopped playing until I have completed the other games I'm playing. It just wasn't as compelling to go back to and that is (for me) completely due to the lack of impact from the melee combat. The open world and item pick ups weren't bad and some places looked really nice IMO. The problem with the combat was how much it fancied itself a melee game, but the slashes and combos were pretty poor and the parry was kinda rubbish, so there was no option other than to invest in a gun build to beat the bigger enemies, else get flattened. The part of combat that shines are the mutation/moral powers, I was looking forward to getting them and enjoyed the good path powers and mutations that I did get. It is a shame they didn't take longer making the combat feel impactful and fun, because I have no doubt I would have played to completion straight away, had they taken the time. Hopefully then a much more solid sequel will arrive out of this news.
@orson I am too. Did you play it? You'll probably know what we're talking if you do, it's good and if it does get a sequel I'm hoping for a more in depth combat system and maybe less focus on crafting every single tiny thing (the weapons themselves are fun to craft, though, just not the add ons and such).
@Niktaw I went for a dual wield melee focus (found out the fist glove thing was just better instantly so switched to that) couldn't find any healing items (they pretty much stopped dropping off of enemies) and kept dying on the big salamander dudes with no heal option so for me, the combat wasn't easy at all lol I gave up because I couldn't explore a few areas, I just died with no option to heal
@Jayofmaya interesting, I didn’t have that experience. The ranged was definitely OP, I spent my time upgrading my gun so I didn’t really get into melee except to mess around. Ranged you can smoke everything and enemies have a couple cookie cutter moves and that’s it, no cover or anything, so it was sleepwalkingly easy.
@Niktaw Yeah, I really wanted to focus on melee and psy powers because I love warlock class in any RPG that offers it, but alas it seems I should have picked the class with the bandana dude repping it (forget the name).
This result flies in the face of Outriders, which had 3.5 million unique players but didn't recoup the cost as of yet.
I've heard nothing but bad things from my circles, is it really worth looking into? From the outside looking in I'd believe the stories.
Well, that's quite surprising. With all the negative reviews I was expecting it to bomb.
Haven't played it and currently not intending to, but if they feed some of the profits back into improving the game a la NMS, I might be tempted down the line.
I really hope they continue to patch and update it. I played a bit but then decided to wait until it got patched a bit.
@PegasusActual93 TimeSplitters will happen. They even put parts of the map in homefront
Still waiting for Biomutant to hit $20, then I'll consider trying it out.
I love the way websites praise dumpster fires of which I will not name to avoid annoying anyone but then you have a small indie developer here who IMHO made a beautiful first game and it gets bashed to hell. Yeah this annoys me a lot, borderline infuriates me in fact.
