Alongside the news that God of War (2018) will be coming to PC in January, Sony has shared updated sales numbers for the PlayStation 4 exclusive. We obviously already knew that the game was a huge hit for the Japanese giant, both critically and commercially, but it's still hugely impressive to hear that the title has sold through a whopping 19.5 million copies to date.
Most PlayStation exclusives tend to hit very high numbers these days, but almost 20 million units for a three-year-old game locked to a single platform is some achievement. There's no doubt that Kratos is pretty much the face of PlayStation at this point in time.
It's going to be very interesting to see how the upcoming sequel, God of War Ragnarok, does in a commercial sense compared to its predecessor. It will, of course, be released on two platforms rather than one (PS5 as well as PS4), but generally speaking, sequels sometimes struggle to replicate the sales success of the titles that came before.
In any case, God of War really has solidified itself as a landmark release for PlayStation.

This game is gonna have like an 80% attach rate to PS5 consoles lol
Remember the dark days when the futures of the God of War franchise and Sony Santa Monica were uncertain and kind of grim-looking? I'm so glad we're past that time.
That including all the free copies? Since when you download it as free you get an email thanking you for your purchase
But but it's a 3rd person cinematic game, surely no one likes those games.....
Joke BTW
Finally platinumed this yesterday after three and a half years.
Going back after that long to kill the Valkyries and not remembering the controls was a sweary challenge.
Not surprised, great game. Ragnarok is Day 1
easily one of the best games I've ever played, its in my top ten that's for sure.
PS game of the generation for me. Hands down.
Dear God. That's mighty impressive
I wonder if this number includes people that played it on PS Now.
@Milktastrophe well its sales figures so no
Great game but I still haven't finished it yet. Kinda burnt out to the PS games formula of 3rd-person cinematic experience. I kinda prefer the old GoW games tbh. But that aside, congrats to Santa Monica
Pretty impressive numbers, especially considering it’s given away in the PS+ collection for all PS5 owners.
@Anke Just platinumed the game recently myself after beating it for the first time. I think the prospect of trying to relearn the controls while engaging in difficult post-game battles and remembering the layout of the environment was the motivation I needed to just complete it in one go!
@Ralizah I hear you there! This is why I find DLC so hard to purchase, by the time it comes out I've forgotten how to play it.
@Anke Same, DLC comes too late for me in most cases.
Best game ever word up son
I need more asap. After the platinum, new game+ and hundreds of muspelheim reruns I've been impatiently waiting for over a year for the sequel my game disc has been collecting dust
One of the best games I've ever played on the PS4 and excited that PC players will get to experience this. Can't wait for Ragnarok.
How on earth wasnt it higher! There are 100 million PS4's out there!
That said a brilliant achievement fpr Playstation, Cory and everyone at Santa Monica Studio
Huge congrats to Cory and the Santa Monica team! GOW was the reason why I purchased a PS4!
@Residentsteven Uncharted 4 yeah no way for me on that i still need to finish it.
@carlos82 Sony has to negotiate deals to make games available on PS Now, where they'll pay for the game and hopefully make back more money in subscription fees. Probably it's much easier to put their own game on the service, in which case they're probably either not paying or throwing some cash to the dev, which can kinda be considered an investment in a dev they're already funding. Either way money is not moving externally, so with the offset cost the question is whether that profit is considered solely PS Now's profit or profit towards the played game, e.g. God of War.
Plus when you download it through PS Now you do get a purchase receipt, so in that sense it is a sale. I think they've started doing purchase receipts for streaming too, but that may've been after God of War's time.
@Residentsteven also great games!
Definitely one of the best I’ve played the last gen. Really great game especially considering just how gross and dated the originals were. Such a great modernisation of a character who was never very interesting but now actually has layers. Like an onion.
@Rob_230 I'm always curious about attach rates for the PS4.
I think this game is about 17% of the 116 million consoles.
But if you think, people may have bought 2+ PS4 variations, pre-owned copies, PS Now. The number should be higher.
Great achievement considering that the other titles sales aren't even close to this sale count.
Would like to see numbers of other games to compare. I never really got into the game when I played it, I was mostly just forcing myself to play it. Until I got a brand new PS4 pro. The PS4 pro would shut down just 5 seconds after turning the game on. So never finished it. Other games were working fine. Only god of war would cause it to shut down due to overheating.
Congrats to God of War on almost hitting 20 million copies sold!
Congrats to Santa Monica! I really enjoyed this one! My one major complaint however is the overuse of a big guy with a column as a weapon. I saw him way too many times in 2018 so if the sequel could fix that it would be much appreciated!
@RBMango... Almost forgot SSM almost went under... I suppose Kratos is to the them what Final Fantasy was to the original Square Soft.
It's sad that Ragnarok is the last adventure with Kratos
