In case you somehow missed it, yesterday saw the arrival of an extended look at Elden Ring, FromSoftware's hotly anticipated action RPG. If you've been waiting for some proper gameplay footage, we now have nearly 20 minutes' worth, showing off exploration in the open world and combat against basic enemies and one or two bosses. In addition, pre-orders have been going live across various retailers, and one listing points to an unannounced feature for the PlayStation 5 version.
According to the collector's edition page on US retailer GameStop, Elden Ring players on PS5 will be able to choose from two display modes. This has become fairly commonplace over the last 12 months, but it's still good to see this game will provide you with more options. A Performance Mode will allow you to run the game with a target of 60 frames-per-second, while the Graphic Mode puts the focus on resolution, bumping the picture quality to 4K at a lower frame rate.
In the aforementioned gameplay video, the game was running on a PC build at 60 frames-per-second, so we can expect the PS5 version to match up to that. Will you play Elden Ring in Performance or Graphic Mode on PS5? Choose wisely in the comments section below.

Performance first playthrough. Quality second with magic and faith build.
Would be a stupid mistake if it didn't
Pretty much all PS5 games do if they don't just run 60 by default so this isn't a surprise can't wait until CC2 release the 60 patch for Demon Slayer Hinokami Chronicles 😁
Either/or? Thought the PS5 would be both?
Performance all the way for me, which will be the norm for me going forward.
I thought next gen was meant to have both plus ray tracing, why do we have to choose?
sweet sweet 60fps
@DomGC when they bring up the crafting menu you can see surface level stats on the right, it listed Stamina so we'll be managing it in some capacity.
Neither. I don't have a PS5, and I'm actively debating whether I want to wait to play this until I do.
60 FPS all day
No matter how powerful consoles get there will AWAYS be a need to compromise (because ultimately resources are finite and you have to make choices). The difference is as generations go these compromises become more and more subtle (for example today we may aim for 1440p vs native 4K, screen space reflections instead of RT reflections etc). In future it might be 4K as performance and 8K as quality, or RT reflections, shadows, global illumination etc).
Definitely performance mode, no contest
It already looks bad. Cant stomach even further graphical downgrade so i will be playing it on quality mode for sure. Even bloodborne, 6 years old game, looks better than it.
Not to be a negative Nancy, but the game is cross gen title, yet players are supposed to choose between fidelity or performance?
It's unfair to compare Insomniac with FromSoft, but looking at Spiderman and Ratchet, both offer RT plus 60 fps and LOOK better.
Performance Mode for me, its vital for games like this.
@Divergent95 Almost like Elden Ring has a different engine, is doing different things and is made by different Devs.
@DomGC If the Soulsborne games lacked a stamina system it would break the game, anyway if you build your character right its almost never an issue.
@WallyWest Let me correct you there, an OUTDATED engine. Not a hater, just stating facts.
I do think it looks nice, but nowhere near demanding as other titles, yet both PS5 and XSX have to "compromise".
@Divergent95
I mean. Even PC gamers always have the choice. Why not consoles ?
@Divergent95 Outdated engine or not its an engine what doesn't allow the same type of stuff the one used for Spider-Man does. Your comparing an apple to a orange and From games have never been the most technical advanced games out there, Bloodborne is the best looking one from them and it has many issues and could do with a PS5 patch.
@Throb Because if that were the case, we'd be paying double the price for the ps5.
@JJ2 I meant, why should next gen players choose between RT 30 fps and 4K 60 fps in a cross gen game?
4K 60 with RT should be standard for a game that will release on old consoles.
Don't take this as "hate", I'm just criticizing FromSoft in a respectful way.
@WallyWest So basically, they should change their engine and polish their games more?
God I hope they do.
This was to be expected. I would like to see more games implementing the 40fps Fidelity mode for 120hz displays, as seen in Ratchet and Clank. That was a real game changer and a nice middle ground between performance and quality.
This is a clear "No choice".
Tried Demon's Souls on PS5 on Quality and switched back to Performance after a few seconds of looking around.
From's games were never about beautiful textures, and that's OK, they have many other good attributes that make them stand out. Besides, Demon's Souls looks very good even on Performance mode... I bet it will be the same with Elden Ring.
So 60fps is by far the way to go, for a smooth gameplay.
I don‘t get why someone would prefer 30 fps over 60 fps, especially in a tough game with precise actions like this. 60 fps for me, always (as long as I don‘t own a 120 fps capable TV).
Quality mode in DS remake gave me nausea after 5 seconds - I think they only put it in there for screen-grabs and photo mode - they said so themselves not to play on that setting.
Let's hope Elden Ring's performance mode is 1440p at the very least!
Stunning.
Especially the dragon fight.
performance mode no doubt
@Divergent95
I know there is a huge consensus favouring frame rate but I feel it’s not always obvious. GOTG for instance maybe better played on quality mode on my big TV. I’ll see when I get the game.
On topic though it would be best to wait and know the details. Sometimes quality mode doesn’t mean 30fps. I know it’s likely here but best to wait to know the facts
All in all I think to offer a choice is a good thing
Edit
Demon Souls performance mode was excellent. I don’t see how anyone could be unhappy about that game offering the choice.
thats nice, i really dont see much difference playing things in 30 or 60fps, so im going with the resolution mode
So what was the reveal running at? If that was performance mode in the video then thats more than good enough for me...30fps with ray tracing no thanks as 30fps is just way too distracting after being spoilt by so many games running super smooth..whats doom eternal running at? Wasnt that 1800p@60fps with ray tracing? Looks amazing to me so i'd accept that in elden ring..
@felip really you cant tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps? Would you like to borrow my glasses as i think you need your eyes testing..
@Northern_munkey yep, games in 4k are a lot prettier than the 1080p ones, but fps? meh, it looks the same to me
@Northern_munkey There are enough people thatnhave no issues with 30FPS. Driveclub was one of those gsmes that still played fantastic and thats a racer on 30FPS while looking fantastic.
@Flaming_Kaiser yes there are people that dont have an issue with 30fps..drive club does look very nice as do a lot of games but when someone says they cant tell the difference between 30 and 60 i just have to question it..remember its the difference i'm stating not if people have issues playing in 30...very different..
@felip you own a ps5? Have control? You cant see any frame rate difference between the two modes on offer?
@Divergent95 You do understand that many gaming PC's still don't do 4K/60FPS right? The reason its uncommon at best on PS5 is because its pretty hard to do.
I don't think you realise that Elden Ring is doing more tricky things then Spider-Man or R&C. From my understanding the world is completely seamless so when you enter a dungeon you won't have a loading screen, that big massive explorable castle is part of the open world. Spider-Man just takes place in a moderate sized NY where not a huge amount is actually going on beyond traffic and people walking around, in Elden Rings it will be full of enemies and giant bosses and mini bosses what will have more complex AI then the more scripted AI of the SM boss fights. Elden Ring is properly more demanding then SM. Finally Elden Ring on PS5 is its own thing and may have visual things what the PS4 lacks or has in much lower quality, it isn't a PS4 game with a PS5 patch.
End of the day get used to different settings for consoles games as we have reached that point and have access to the same things PC has had forever
@JJ2 Indeed... Best thing is to wait for the actual game to come out. Hope they pull it off.
But I do hope they change/update their engine.
@WallyWest Fair argument lol. Like I previosly said, it's best we wait and see. My only concern is how the PS4 version will run. Bloodborne runs like cr*p, Elden Ring might open a black hole lmao.
@_seneka The sooner people stop caring about graphics the better cause Elden Ring looks super gorgeous
Performance mode all the way without a doubt. I'd rather not have a big dip in FPS.
If a game is playable on a base PS4 I don't understand why the PS5 version can't hit 4K60.
