In the latest Street Fighter V developer update, Capcom suggests that we'll be seeing the next game — supposedly named Street Fighter VI — at some point in 2022. A message at the end of the video reads "we'll be back with more news about the future of Street Fighter".
If rumours are to be believed, the next Street Fighter title has been in development for quite some time, all while Capcom continued to support Street Fighter V with seasonal updates and DLC characters. The last of those characters, Luke, releases on the 29th November.
"For us, Street Fighter V has been a project of peaks and valleys," says director Takayuki Nakayama. "But thanks to our fans, we've been able to accomplish what we aimed for," he continues. "We, the development team, will use this experience as a springboard to move on to the next project."
"We look forward to providing you more information next year," teases producer Shuhei Matsumoto.
Indeed, it feels like it's finally time for a new Street Fighter. Street Fighter V has been around for nearing six years now, and with all of the updates that it's received, it's easy to forget that it was heavily criticised at launch for its lack of content. Hopefully Capcom can avoid similar pitfalls when it delivers the sequel.
What do you want from Street Fighter VI? Don't waste your meter in the comments section below.

I never spent as much time with V as I would have liked, but it's more due to where I am in my life. I hope VI grabs me and is just a fun Street Fighter. It's been too long since a fighter really grabbed me and kept me hooked. It's hard without local friends to play with.
I wonder if Sony will make this a PlayStation console exclusive again. They definitely need their own fighting game(s), though.
meh, it's gonna be more of the same anyways
@huyi The devs have changed now
I enjoyed V for the most part. Definitely had a rocky start though. But over the years it managed to improve. Let’s not make the same mistake next time right Capcom?
It's going to be pretty sad for me moving on from SFV. I know I have a very unpopular opinion but SFV is far and away my favorite of the series and I've played them all. It's by a mile my most played game on PS4 from that generation. The V system started simple and blossomed into one of the most robust systems of any Fighter I've ever played.
I just hope SFVI keeps the pacing of SFV mostly. Not too fast, not too slow, just perfect.
@TheCollector316 I hope not, as I have having the option of what console I want to play a game on.
Alas, I understand why SFV was exclusive to PS4 as it probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Sony, at least at that time.
Street fighter v is one of the reason I'll never preorder digital games again, I hope street fighter 6 launch feature complete unlike v. Also I want more realistic fighter like street fighter 2 & 3 or arc system work games.
No more Ono, so it should be good
I'd take Street Fighter Alpha 4.
@BionicDodo 1000% this! Haven't enjoyed SF as much since Alpha 3
Starting from this year, the next three years is going to be big for fighting games.
Hope this plethora of fighting games brings in more people into the FGC.
In hindsight, it is good that Guilty Gear strive released this year, because there seems to be alot of competition coming in the near future.
Looking forward to trying out Luke when he releases. Overall I really enjoyed SFV. In recent years I've not touched it that much, but in the earlier years I played a lot (on PC in those days). Even though there are other great fighting games around, you can't beat Street Fighter.
In a new game I'm not really sure what I want. Mostly more of the same I suppose? The return of parrying and a dash mechanic would be good (lifted from the Arc Systems games). However I do wonder whether a dash would change the fundamental feel of the game too much. I'd also like a soundtrack on par with Third Strike. That was very much of its time though so I doubt we'll get anything quite like that again. Besides that, I just want Street Fighter to continue feeling like Street Fighter.
What I'd really love to see more generally is a Blazblue game in the Strive engine. I suspect this is highly unlikely to ever happen.
The method of release of SFV meant I never had any interest in getting it. I mean, 6 is nearing announcement and 5 isn’t even complete yet! I know the underhand reasons they do it like this, with the steady drip of content meaning people are more likely to stay “engaged” and to throttle the second hand market, but this type of thing really isn’t for me.
@BionicDodo @VatoLoco47 2000% this. I still play Zero 3 to this day. Easily the best Street Fighter ever made. I even bought a PocketStation for it.
Street fighter alpha 3 is my favorite street fighter but ofcmodern times i will give it to SF4. Never played 5.
@SoulChimera I don't think I've ever seen a PocketStation in the flesh! I was playing Street Fighter Zero 2 Dash on Saturn yesterday though.
I'm still waiting for dotemu to make the next alpha title
SFV was a shocking poorly optimized advertisement fest and all the crap add-ons and excruciating loading just put me off the whole modern series. SF Arcade Collection is so much better.
SFV had a rocky start but quite a good run! Definitely one of the best fighting games of the generation, if not THE best. I am ready for something new, though!
Hi there fellow gamers.
As a Street Fighter fan since SFII on Amiga PC (yeah, I´m that old) and SFII Champion Edition on Sega Mega Drive (Genesis), SFV was very disapointing at launch.
The game did improve a lot with the more recent editions and you can definitely see the dlc characters are more fleshed out and better than the initial roster. Also the online kinda sucked.
I´m really hoping SF6 will actualy be a "full" game at start with interesting characters and fun gameplay mechanics.
Luke does seem to be the kind of character that might pull me back to it.
And just like @SoulChimera @VatoLoco47 @BionicDodo have mentioned, SFA3 is an amazing fighting game and my personal SF of all time. That game had eveything. A great and big roster, great gameplay, lot´s of different and fun modes to play and unlockable characters in the very unique called World Tour Mode.
Can SF6 be more like SFA3 Capcom? Cause that´s what I want.
Cheers, stay safe everyone and happy gaming to us all
Launch with 20 fighters and a hidden extra character for finishing the game and we are dandy. Anything less and it's not good enough Imo. Also 20 stages and some extras as well please. Throw in some classic stages.
@thefourfoldroot So you would rather they stop adding to the game and let it die on the vine? Or would you prefer each upgrade to only be released as a stand alone game like SFII -> CE -> Turbo -> Super -> Super Turbo? And I can only imagine the internet fury that would be unleashed if Capcom “stopped supporting” V to focus entirely on 6. They stumbled out of the gate with V, but in short order it became the top fighting game of the PS4 era, and is still worth playing even if you don’t care for how it was released.
@Amnesiac
I’d rather they release a game with all fighters and modes. Then release a sequel after a couple of years. Is this now considered unusual?
@thefourfoldroot I'd say it's unusual. I'm struggling to think of a single fighting game released over the past eight years that hasn't had at least one character addition and balance patch. Even niche titles like Koihime Enbu have had roster updates. Of course, rereleases are pretty static so there's always VF5 and the like for those that would rather not have their games updated. I much prefer this way of keeping a fighting game alive to the sports game approach where updates are sold as new games each year.
@Amnesiac
Well, I don’t mind balancing patches, that’s inevitable as testing isn’t as effective at catching issues as millions of people playing.
But no reason other than greed to release an unfinished game before putting in all the fighters and modes. I’d rather not be nickel and dimed into spending more money in the long run in order to get the full roster.
@AdamNovice lol wot? It's going to be the same online only eSports focus, drip feeding new characters all over again, I don't think I will be the only one who won't be looking forward to this either!
@SoulChimera
Third Strike is my personal favorite.
I mained Chun, Makoto, and Ryu.
Super Turbo is my second favorite. Mained Chun primarily and on her rare bad matchups I played Sagat.
I like V more than IV, though. Once again, Chun-Li main despite her dropping down the tier list over the lifetime of the game. Ryu as backup.
I’m primarily a Chun player and while she’s no slouch on IV, it felt like the game was designed around nerfing her gameplay. Chun is principly a footsie/poke character. Except in Super Turbo where I play her as a rush down character thanks to standing medium punch being absolutely broken in terms of frame data. Focus attack/dash canceling really, REALLY hurt the footsie/poke characters offensive viability.
Poor business practice selling characters as dlc. Hard pass
Still play the odd match now and again, though I have found the SF gameplay becoming increasingly convoluted over the last few games...but that's just a personal opinion.
I do like the art style, however, so I hope they stick with that.
wish they would bring back the Street Fighter III graphics bout done with all this cell shaded stuff
It's just mind boggling that someone supports a game thats infested with cash grab dlc practice. Literally a max 40$ game stretched into the stratosphere. I wouldn't even pirate capcoms games.
@johnny30 finally some truth! Japanese game creators have become too greedy! Rehash and resell, that's all they do.
Thank god the endeavor is almost over , SF5 just ain't it . Loved SF4 and played it everyday for hours ; i tried to like V so many times & bought every version of it , but its just a big turn-off .
@GeneralFlamer i dont think its that mind-boggling per-se , theres virtually nothing else to fill the street fighter void other than Mortal Kombat - but those 2 games are entirely different. Other fighters are mostly 2D-sprite anime fighters , or tekken .
@Papasears i was thinking the same thing . i prefer 3D graphics (NOT SFV's though) , but a street-fighter akin to the looks of guilty-gear strive wouldn't be bad. unlike strive , the animations and attacks would be more fluid and have more frames too. SF3 animates really good.
@huyi they better not. id presume SFV made so much $$ from its fanservice trash cosmetics , DLC characters , the competitive scene , & champion edition , that they wouldn't do that.
but i doubt it.
@nomither6 you think they wouldn't? The things that capcom have pulled over the years with horrible practices, don't underestimate them honestly!
