After it was spotted on the PlayStation Store backend last week, The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience is now available for pre-load on PS5 for free. The application will be revealed later this week at The Game Awards, with everyone able to actually launch it and dive into The Matrix in Unreal Engine 5 starting this Friday. It weighs in at roughly 25GB, so be sure your PS5 SSD has some spare space. A teaser trailer has also been released featuring Keanu Reeves.
The PS Store description reveals more about the experience: "Created by members of the original movie team including Lana Wachowski along with Epic Games and partners, The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience is a wild ride into the reality-bending universe of The Matrix that features performances by Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss." It's all designed to provide a "glimpse into the future of interactive storytelling and entertainment with UE5".
Pitched as a tech demo, you'll be taking in what's on-screen rather than being left impressed with any interactivity. "Step into the world of one of the most iconic action franchises ever made." Will you be checking out this Unreal Engine 5 tech demo via The Matrix Awakens? Let us know in the comments below.

I'll download this just out of my UE5 curiosity (definitely more interested in the tech than a movie tie-in).
It's if just a tech demo without any interactivity would it be the same watching it on Youtube w/o the 25GB download?
Edit: Every time I click "Add to Library" I get this error message - "Something went wrong. Try again later."
Yes, I have a PS5 and I am logged into my account. π€·ββοΈ
Edit 2: Ok, I see where it says "vibration" so I suppose that would be different experience than watching it on YT. π
The cyberpunk ps5 patch is looking good. Johnny Silverhand has never looked better.
25gb? There wants to be more than a cutscene or two in there.
Kind of reminds me of Abandoned but...you know without all the nonsense. Sounds cool I'll definitely check it out. Very excited for Matrix Resurrections!
This will be cool.
@Korgon Where did Abandoned go π
@nessisonett was thinking that, they did release a trailer of some sorts eventually in that app didn't they? Then not heard a thing since very bizarre!
@Korgon Can this be better than the Abandoned Real Time Experience? It's gonna be tough to beat it π€£
@nessisonett I finally gave up and deleted it last week...
If you're not doing anything of note i think i will leave it, i can't be bothered to be moving things around on my HD for this haha.
Now how about a Unreal 5 remake of The Path of Neo pretty please.
@lolwhatno I only see it because I remember you cutting it out lol.
Neat! Iβll check it outβ¦ for someone who only owns 3 PS5-proper games, itβll be cool to push the consoleβs limits and see what this baby is capable of.
Hoping this is a real showcase for Unreal Engine 5 - looking forward to seeing what's possible.
Pity there's no new Unreal Tournament to show it off.
Damn you Fortnite
I'm really looking forward to this. Downloading now. Can't wait to see for myself what UE5 is capable of even in the early stages of its "life".
Breathtaking!
@nessisonett
Your guess is as good as mine! I can't wait for the eventual documentary for that whole thing. π
@render
I know right talk about pressure! Hopefully we get more than Neo walking on a wooden floor!π€£
@nessisonett Supposedly there's a "Playable Prologue" coming to the Abandoned thing in "Q1 2022" but after the last time I just got tired of their BS and deleted the app
Thought I read not long ago that UE5 was OK for XBone and PS4 (possibly even Switch?) as well as next gen?
@Jayslow cyberpunk was a bogus journey
@solocapers
Thatβs my main issue with Fortnite. Every other Epic franchise had to die to let their teams work on it.
At this point, Iβd be cool with them handing it off to a competent outside studio to develop Unreal Tournament 4.
We need more multiplayer shooters like UT. Simple gameplay, max of 24 players, conventional game modes, and no MTX skins. Just a plain basic shooter, a revival of the original UT or Quake 3: Arena.
Hell Iβd be satisfied with a remake of UT:2004 in Unreal Engine 5. Certainly thereβs a studio out there who could handle that project.
@TheRedComet yep.. sadly it seems that if a game doesn't sell skins and emotes then folk just aren't interested.
Maybe we'll get sucked into the matrix through our PS5's. Got to be cooler than Zuckerberg's Metaverse that's for sure!
It keeps saying something went wrong whenever I try to download it.
@Bentleyma-
Excellent!
Q: Does it have a spoon?
@SystemAddict to each their own. I thought it was an "Excellent Adventure". But I know that isn't a popular stance in online forums so one of these days I'll need to "Face the Music".
Very excited, after that incredible Unreal 5 demo running on PS5. This Matrix experience will cement what we can truly expect from the new generation. I personally believe what we have so far this gen hasn't scratched the surface. It's still PS4 transition stuff. Great that it is, the best is yet to come.
@nessisonett Abandoned playable prologue is set for release Q1 2022. But itβll be delayed last minute, Iβm sure
@Jayslow That would be most heinous, dude.
@rjejr well, running on PS5 makes it more "real" than watching over YouTube, but then there's no user input, game logic, physics or any other burden for the hardware to attend... So while this might look impressive, having a game looking whatever this thing looks like, will be maybe a little off the charts, at least for some years.
The teaser alone impressed me yeah I gota see more.
i don't have a ps5 so i can never see this demo, maybe it's cool? idk?
Loaded it up on xbox series x and it gives a 10.12.21 with the matrix code scrolling down the screen.
@nessisonett It never existed.
@WallyWest YES!!! and a remake of enter the matrix. Loved those games
Anything by the Wachowskis please.
@lolwhatno
I can't stop looking now π€¦ββοΈπ
Thanks for the reminder, plan to install it before the Game Awards start!
