Square Enix has an early Christmas present in store for anyone who grabbed Final Fantasy VII Remake via PlayStation Plus earlier this year: you can upgrade this version of the game to the enhanced PlayStation 5 version for free starting this Wednesday. When Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade released in June, only those who had actually bought the game were allowed to upgrade for free. Six months later, the offer expands to those who got the RPG through PS Plus.
Better late than never, we suppose. This means PS5 owners who did claim the game via Sony's subscription service can look forward to either 60 frames-per-second support or a 4K resolution through the two modes on offer. Better yet, the Yuffie DLC titled Episode INTERmission is also going on sale for a limited time alongside this PS Plus offer. You will be able to save 25 per cent, bringing the price down to $14.99.
When we reviewed Episode INTERmission on PS5, we said that while it won't blow anyone's mind, it's still "an enjoyable adventure that slots neatly into the existing story, and fans won't want to miss it".
This offer from Square Enix at least fixes one of the bigger problems hurting PS Plus right now: the lack of free PS4 to PS5 upgrades for titles that hit the service. It happened most recently with Mortal Shell, but has been an issue as far back as GreedFall's inclusion at the very start of 2021. But at least we (eventually) have a positive outcome here. If you claimed Final Fantasy VII Remake through PS Plus and own a PS5, the free upgrade is yours from 22nd December 2021.

Nice Christmas gift
In a way you cannot blame SE. They have to get their money somehow. Your long term rental on the Plus only goes so far.
I think this is partly just Square Enix trying to squeeze some more profit out of the Yuffie DLC.
This is awesome. I was holding off, but I'll jump in now that I can get that 60fps goodness.
The reason i bought the upgrade (on sale) is because they said we wouldnt be getting a free upgrade! Thankfully, I'm loving it enough all over again to quell the rage in my heart. The combat in this game makes Guardians of the galaxy look like a baby's toy.
Huh, interesting.
Wow. How generous.
/s
Good things come to those who wait or more accurately those with a big backlog stopping them from buying all the latest games.
Fantastic news. I'm glad I grabbed and never bought the PS5 version. It should have been like this from the start, but I'll take it.
wow, kinda annoying though as I never claimed the ps plus version and only have the ps4 disc, so I have to put the disc in every time I want to play the game, o well.
A Christmas gift? With the amount of games out there that offer a free next gen upgrade, this should be expected anyway.
Oh sweet. Still haven't played it yet, definitely will bump it up the q now
Problem is I don't think I will play it again after playing the PS4 version. I really enjoyed the game but I have 12+ sealed unopened games to play.
@ShogunRok Well that and the terrible pc port happening with it too
Dumb question what i think i know the answer to already but is the PS5 version tied to Plus or will it become properly "mine" once i upgrade my Plus PS4 version?
Can't complain with that. I recently traded my PS5 copy in which i haven't even play yet (played PS4 version last year) so i guess i can play it any time now.
@WallyWest The Plus upgraded version would still be a Plus rental. Only way it will be yours is after you buy it.
merry christmas indeed!
Thanks, Microsoft, for being a real competitor again!
Bought the intergrade edition at full price. Easily worth its money imo. 94 hours playtime and got the all trophies. Top tier Final Fantasy.
Now everyone with a PS5 can go and buy the best DLC of the year.

I've been waiting for a discount on the DLC since release. Even if it's just 5 bucks, I'ma take it.
This is why it made sense in the first place. Locking upgrade paths behind whether the game was bought or from plus (a subscription service that people get in part to receive games) was always an anti consumer move. Hope they get rewarded by them selling more dlc and other publishers take note
Already preorded the game back then. I'm glad psplus user can get the free upgrade, the game is even better with ps5 power 😃
@JohnKarnes 12? Damn. I just dug out a bunch of 3ds, Ds and Wii games I never touched. Added them to the pile of 110 ish ps4 games I haven't played yet. I haven't bought a game since October as I realise it's getting a bit silly.
@Max_the_German Xbox is no real competitor. No games, disappointing hardware.
@Reeneman You're kidding, right? I love my PS5, but Microsoft have had a really good year. Forza Horizon 5 is taking GOTY awards, Halo Infinite is reviewing and performing well, and that's after earlier successes in the year like Flight Sim.
Anyway, back to the subject, I wonder if this means others like Mortal Shell might be included soon?
@Just1moretry
He's not wrong this will be another generation that xbox gets slapped. They have no chance,
Yeah you say halo and forza that's great but that's all they've survived on for years, sony in 2022 will destroy xbox hands down.
As for subject I belive mortal shell will give the ps5 upgrade for free soon, but having played both ps4 and ps5 versions I can assure you, your not missing much at all
@Just1moretry Forza 5 is a fantastic game!!
Halo has a nice shooter mechanic but overall relatively worse open world gameplay with generic story.
@Just1moretry You are mentioning the only titles of note not available on ps, and quite frankly, there are issues with all of them. I'm a gp ultimate subscriber, have a series X and a 3090 pc, but its not for first party titles.
Nobody buys a console to play flight sims, its slow, laborious sand very clunky as well as loaded with transactions.
Halo plays really sweet, mechanics and weapons are very good, but the story are acting are laughable, and the single biome looks like a ps4 game, and is short. Its not that good.
FH5 is a good title, but even that has to be run at 30 fps on the series X if you want to avoid noticeable pop in, and once your at level 200 or above, you start getting bored in a way I didn't with FH4. Its third party titles which feel like a win, with award winners like psyconauts 2 and it takes 2 for free on gp, leaving me more funds for first party ps5, or 3rd party titles not on game pass.
The best solution is having both, but if you have money for games, ps5 still the better place to be imo.
Amazing, I've been holding off on this as I wanted to play the PS5 version but kept buying other things instead. No excuse now! I'm buying less and less games recently considering the huge backlog of freebies I've accrued in the last few years. I'm currently playing Persona 5, a game I would never have tried if it wasn't free but I absolutely love it.
@SilentS @WallyWest just have to wait and see. Usually the crossbuy will still be under the PS+ license, however, recently with The Persistence the enhanced version did convert it to a full license.
Feels to me like Sony is getting more hate here then they deserve. All these free PS5 upgrades not being free for PS Plus, it seems to be a part of a deal with publisher. And if publisher pricing is being unreasonable, I can understand a decision to go with PS4 version of FF7 instead of a straight to PS Plus indie experiment.
Also, since it is inevitably compared, Smart Delivery relied on the fact MS would secure both licences through first year for both titles. Now when that seems to be over, not all games support free upgrade..
Better late than never. But I still see this cynically. It's a typical Square Enix move of wanting to have your cake and eat it too. Get a lot of Day 1 sales of the PS5 version and then later add this to promote DLC sales.
Regardless still thankful for the change and will be picking this up.
Hahaha, this is blatantly because so few people even bothered to play the version they originally gave. I'm tired of all this nonsense to the point where I can't even be bothered to play it anymore. Maybe when it's all complete as a full game.
They have kind of shot themselves in the foot, as the sales of part two will be mainly dependant on how many played part one. I hope they don't drag it out too long and the next part is the last with everything else included.
@Old-Red they’ve hardly shot themselves in the foot. They’ve sold over 5 million units as of Aug 2020 and that’s not including those who have played via PS+. Also, I guarantee they’ll sell two versions of Part 2 - Stand alone and packaged up with Part 1 for the very reason you’ve mentioned.

@Reeneman Ps5 and new Xbox are pretty much equals when it comes to performance. Also, Xbox has much better backwards compatibility, which is something the Ps5 severely lacks. Both consoles are worth it imo. Although I'm a PlayStation kinda guy since my childhood. I'll probably get an xbox in a year or two.
@CrushALL 😹😹 wtf is this
@Ward_ting is 5 million really enough though?
@CrushALL no need for all the aggression. People are allowed to enjoy multiple consoles. Take a chill pill. Does it really affect your life that much?
@CrushALL You had no breakfast, right? I never had an Xbox nor will I probably ever have one. I am just glad that they introduced Smart Delivery, which is a great feature and pushes Sony and other publishers towards automatic and free gen-to-gen upgrades. And there are other great things from Microsoft as well: Game Pass, extensive back compatibility, which also have a positive effect on PS gamers.
Well in all the confusion over this earlier in the year, I deliberately did not redeem the PS+ version in case that locked me out of being able to get the full PS5 version down the line.
I'll stick to the original plan and wait for the inevitable FFVII Remake Complete Edition in a few years time when they've finished remaking the whole thing.
What happened - 'great news! Thank you SE!'
What really happened -
step 1) sell to Sony to put on plus = 'great month! All hail plus!'.
Step 2) release a 'free' upgrade but make sure the ones that got it on plus have to buy the game.
Step 3) once sales dip release free upgrade to everyone and discount the dlc so those going back in will have more incentive to buy dlc.
Step 4) praise = we got them. The perfect heist.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand it's great that a free upgrade is no longer locked away from a subscription service. Hopefully this will happen with all the other games that got free upgrades that don't apply to plus/now versions of the games.
On the other hand...it should have been available to us all from the start and clearly could have been other than to make you buy what you already paid for...and limit your options to either a physical purchase or dlc bundle purchase.
@CrushALL could you have found a better way to make your point? When i read comments like this with poor literacy skills and poor attempts at being edgey it just makes me cringe..grow up sunshine..
Some good news at least, I own it physical but will be nice not to have to get up and put the disk in. Will pick up the dlc as well
The upgrade really is a transformative experience and worth the replay. It's not just the 60fps boost, but higher res, (actual) finished textures, volumetric lighting and no loading screens!
Nice. Haven't played yet. Moved up my play next list.
Yes. This will be my next game (once I finish Kena which is lovely). Fingers crossed for Mortal Shell upgrade next.
@Reeneman
Show me what new good sony exclusives you played this holiday? Oh you cant bring up Rift Apart because that wasnt released this holiday. I'll wait

@TwistedGaming Your post is just embarrassing. Apart from the content, you have spelling and grammar mistakes and even missing words:
'Thers no reason to a Psbore 4 or Psbore 4.5'
Look at yourself before trying to big it up behind your keyboard!
@redcorpuscle
Psbore 4.5 & Psbore 5 = PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 just like the troll with his Xflop so grow up kid
@TwistedGaming You created your account yesterday and most of your posts read as trolling. Any more of this and you will be banned.

Nice. My birthday on Wednesday so that's a nice bonus
I think I'm very much in the minority but I never got on with FF7 remake, I have good memories of playing the original, or at least my rose glasses paint the memories well. But I did not jell with the remake at all. I hope to revisit it at some point but as it stands I will be buying part2.
@TwistedGaming no question Q4 now was really weak in terms of ps exclusives.
But nevertheless far more Ps5 exclusives as anything on the Xbox.
I actually threw shade at this game when it released because I was unhappy with the 'episodic' nature of its delivery. Three parts of the original across three different full game releases.
My friends told me I don't understand the way they are releasing it but I believed (and still think) it's the original three part disc split into three full price releases, which if true I considered unacceptable.
I haven't played it nor read up on it to know if that is true but since it's 'free' on PS+ maybe I'll check it out. I just hope I'm wrong about the 'episodic' three disc split because it's a disgusting idea and I refused to pay for that. When some games, even on Blu-Ray can have multiple discs in a box there is no excuse.
@Reeneman
I've been reading that @TwistedGaming guy's comments. And Xbox fans have the nerve to say we are the toxic ones. Pfft.
I don't disagree there are some very toxic PlayStation fans but those Xbox only guys want to take a look in the mirror.
@GADG3Tx87 haha twisted Gaming was now banned
@ShogunRok @themightyant @Bleachedsmiles totally agree. And they dare to release a 2020 game full price on PC now where it has been claimed to be one of the worst PC ports in a very long time.
Anyway, I'm happy for those who got this game via PS+ can now enjoy the best version. Personally got this game and DLC day 1 and platinumed it after few weeks last year on PS4. I don't think I will replay it simply because I'm not the kind of person that replay games, I just want new stuff Despite this being one of my favourite games of all time!!..
It's sad how the gaming industry turned out to be, we are just surrounded by greed of these big AAA companies. Moreover, for some time already, it has become a new standard: Release unfinished games - patch them later. This is gaming now in 2021 unfortunately.. but that's another topic.
@GADG3Tx87 it's not the 3 discs split into three games. Remake only covers like 20% of the first disc. I don't think they've said how many games this will end up being.
But, Remake stands alone as a fully complete game in itself, it's episodic probably just as much as games like Uncharted are episodic.
I'll give it another playthough. If anything just to hear the ace music from the colloseum.
Wow, that's kind of amazing. Even Square-Enix has figured out how generational upgrades are supposed to work and how not to make it confusing. I almost didn't notice, what with the flock of wild pigs flying south for the winter just outside my window.
Your move Jimbo!
I'm down for the Yuffie upgrade on sale. As a paying FF7R customer....
@GADG3Tx87 There's the toxic fanboys, and then there's just the trolls.... Two different things
@Bleachedsmiles agreed, definitely a cynical move here. I got the PS Plus version but also bought it separately so I could get the PS5 upgrade a few weeks ago. Disappointing they didn't do this from the outset.
@Jayofmaya buddy, you say "a bit silly", I say just face it dude, the plane has hit the mountain. There's just no way you're going to ever catch up. You either declare backlog bankruptcy and only buy what you're gonna play or stop buying games until you've played through your back catalogue. 100+, c'mon dude, that's self abuse right there. Just change your hobby maaaan.
😉
*just kidding, I'm worse than you, dude.

@TheDudeElDuderino
Take it down a notch? Entitled? No dude, it's called an opinion against modern practices of taking customers for granted. You mention real world time constraints? It's not like they've had 24 years or anything to consider the direction they would take it.
I too am an of fan of the original, I was 12 when it came out. You may not regret the purchase as you say, and that's fine, but some of us are tired of this kind of greed.
They make millions in profit either way, they say games cost a lot to make, and they do but they also make huge profits because millions more people buy games than we ever did in 1997.
That comment regarding entitlement goes around a lot these days based on an older guys personal opinion and your condescending and offensive attitude is not appropriate, maybe you should take your own advice before attacking someone for an opinion on a practice and was not directed at an individual, huh? People are allowed an opinion, as you are yours.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@TheDudeElDuderino
Again, that's my opinion and I'm allowed to have it. Who are you to tell me what I can and can't think or believe?
If you intend to be offensive towards a person for their opinion on a practice, and again it wasn't directed at a person or individual, then maybe you should just mind your own business?
Again, I'm allowed my opinion and you are allowed yours. Don't think you have the right to attack someone for what they are allowed to think.
Loving the levels of chill on display, it's evident @TheDudeElDuderino abides.
@theheadofabroom I like your style, dude.😉
Removed - trolling/baiting
@GADG3Tx87 @TheDudeElDuderino Come on people, let's just agree to disagree, we don't need to bait each other into an argument or make assumptions. Be cool, etc.
@TheDudeElDuderino Haha, no you're right, dude. Next game I plan on getting is the new Saints as I want to play something not to serious and I completed the Third 3 times. Best to just get 1 game I'm going to enjoy and feel like doing. I definitely enjoyed FF7 remake, too btw. Will try for 100% one day but settled for game completion for now.
@GADG3Tx87 @TheDudeElDuderino @ShogunRok Yeah, totally man. These guys should just have a smoke and enjoy some fine textile floor coverings.
Here, I'll start: https://www.christies.com/img/LotImages/2020/CKS/2020_CKS_18371_0179_000(a_bakshaish_carpet_west_persia_dated_ah_1318_1900_ad).jpg?w=780
@Jayofmaya @ShogunRok man, I'm not here trying to scam anyone. I was calm, calmer than you are and you said it man, the rug really tied the game together. 😉
@ShogunRok let's agree that "strong men also cry", dude. I'm not saying that @GADG3Tx87 cried nor that they are strong, but, you know I wll not abide when people disrespect ff7 remake or the legendary moments that brought us here. Remember that E3 reveal? No, not that ps port one, the remake video one. Now, THAT made a lot of strong adults cry.
AM I WRONG?
They got their money off people who bought FF7 again for the DLC. Now their plan is to give more people the base game to encourage them to buy the DLC too. This way they make money twice. Nice little devious strategy there.
@Uromastryx "He's not wrong this will be another generation that xbox gets slapped. They have no chance". How old are you, like 5? If anything Xbox recent raise from the disaster with the Xbox One launched helps PS gamers as it keeps Sony in their toes and prevents them from becoming complacent. Imagine Sony's practices if Microsoft wasn't around?
If for own couldn't care less about either, got both consoles, and recently my Xbox has been turned on much more, but will happily change that when Horizon hits. But so far this holiday season I've really enjoyed Halo Infinte, Forza Horizon 5 and Resident Evil Village (I bought on a thanksgiving sale). On PS5, I did play recently Ratchet & Clank: Drift Apart which I bought on a sale as well, but that's pretty much it.
@Amusei
I upgraded my PS4 disc copy (I found a copy of the collectors edition at a GameStop on sale for twenty bucks) to Intergrade. Easily one of my favorite Final Fantasies of all time. I haven’t played the Yuffie DLC but now that it’s getting discounted, I’m gonna reinstall the game and play through it.
@TheRedComet Yuffie DLC is worth it, it's really good and it gives you extra ending scenes which are super awesome. Have fun with it! Can't wait for part 2!
So... did anyone try to upgrade it yet? I'm still getting the "Not available for purchase" message.
EDIT: Never mind, just saw it will be available at 9:00 PST.
@the_pathos Same issue here.
Edit: (Final Fantasy VII REMAKE upgrade for PS4 version owners) is the one not letting me buy or download. Maybe PSN still needs to be updated for this
@CynicalGamer @the_pathos
I had to go a very odd route to locate it.
Go to search, look for final fantasy Vii
Select the first version listed
Then go to the three dots and select View Product
Go to the three dots on the new screen
Select Final Fantasy VII REMAKE Upgrade for PS4 Version Owners
Then there is a drop-down which has Game listed twice
Select the second option
Option to download should show.
Is the free upgrade available yet, just checked and its saying i cant get PS5 edition because i already own the PS4 game on the store...
When can you do this as it won’t let me do it.
@Hatsune_Miku Not working for me. The free PS5 upgrade says it’s incompatible with my PS Plus version.
I cannot do this either. Getting the same incompatibility prompt.
Update: It’s available for US East now. From the PS5 I searched the PSN for “Final Fantasy” then selected the thumbnail that said “+ Exclusive”. This will bring up its product page, then change the droplist from “Game” to the other “Game”. Yeah I know. Then it gave me the option to add to library and download.
@djdizzy Thank you, this worked for me too, after having met nothing but locked doors on store.playstation.com. Was starting to get quite frustrated, I can tell you
Now I'm wishing I had claimed the game when it was free on PS+, oh well lol. I own a physical copy but having it digitally too is nice.
@KidBoruto You should make a habit to add every game to your library. I been a PS+ member from the start and have plenty of games I don't think I will ever play now. But who knows what the future holds.
@JohnKarnes I normally do, but didn't bother since they weren't offering free upgrades for Plus copies at the time.
(not to mention I already owned a physical PS4 copy)
