Here's a surprising new arrival on PlayStation 5 — well, sort of. Serious Sam 4 was recently rated for release on consoles last month, which probably took some of the wind out of this announcement's sails. Still, here we are: the game has not only been announced for PS5, it's available right now.
As you can see in the above gameplay trailer, it looks suitably bananas, with lots of enemies on screen, big weaponry, and all the OTT gore you could ask for. It's developed by Croteam, the studio behind The Talos Principle and, of course, the Serious Sam series, and published by Devolver Digital.
It appears this is a PS5-only port — no PS4 version is mentioned in the press release. If you want to play this prequel, you'll have to do so on Sony's newest console.

Didn’t even know this was a thing until
this afternoon. Downloaded it on Gamepass. Might as well give it a try.
It's been out for a while now on PC and it's... about average. There's nothing in it I'd say that keeps it from being able to run on last gen hardware but....at least there's a new next gen exclusive out I guess?
I guess the game design is the reason for being current-gen only attacking large hordes of enemies is one of them. Which the PS5 can do easily and the PS4 or the PS4 Pro can't handle it.
I will probably give it a go since it's available on Gamepass. It looks like it could be great fun to play in co-op.
These games were really good fun..incredibly stupid and purile but really good fun..might bite in a sale..
Might try it on Gamepass to see if I can make my 6 year old PC literally burst into flames.
If nothing else nostalgia for playing FPS in 1996 at about 1 frame per second on my old Compaq.
If there was a PS5 demo I'd give it a go, liked the SS games considering I don't really like FPS, crazy dumb colorful Duke Nukem.
Even wired its unplayable on xbone due to lag
Sorry, is that a point at 1:22 in the video where you're driving a Combine Harvester into the enemies!?!?!
It sure looks like it, Wow that really is 'Serious'!!!!
@Killionaire, when you say 'Xbone' do you include the Series X/S, and do you mean in co-op, or singleplayer?
@Fiendish-Beaver series is series, so no. Even in sp its unbelievably laggy
Any word on dualsense features? I was hoping they would be implementing something when I saw the announcement. Seems like a perfect game for adaptive triggers.
Just bought it and the launch edition comes with the Serious Sam Collection as well so overall for £33 you get a good deal providing you get it now.
@videoman190 Naw, it's a game looking to capitalise on being next gen exclusive, like Godfall before they announced ps4 version. The terrain detail is pretty poor by the looks of things. The ps4 pro could easily play this and probably base ps4 with only a little work put into changing things. Still gonna be a good year before the proper ps5 games are out.
Played 1 and 2 a lot on PC back in the day. Always a pisser to play.
Downloaded already through GP, will try tonight.
Its less laggy now
@Jayofmaya My thoughts exactly - there's a whiff of "Godfall" and "Destruction All Stars" in the air.
Pro wouldn't break a sweat on this, doubt it'd trouble the base PS4 much (@ 30fps). Probably just a slack, unoptimised port of PC code.
Serious Sam is the series that best represents the original DOOM gameplay, I feel. Large, kinda flat maps with hordes of enemies chasing you down. Simplistic gameplay and story....eh who cares about story in this kind of game? Sam is totally just a brown haired Duke Nukem though.
Just bought the VR collection for PC. Looking forward to playing them, but I think the headless kamikaze dudes will be very stressful in VR!
@Quintumply Can I just jump into this game without any knowledge of what happened in 1-3?
Or will I be utterly confused and missing out on the story beat?
@KidBoruto What Gloamin said, plus it’s a prequel I believe so it takes place before the other games anyway
@Quintumply @Gloamin Thanks for the fast replies, much appreciated!
@videoman190
Actually you are incorrect The PS4 and PS4 Pro is more than capable of handling a simple game like serious Sam. This is obviously a market strategy pushing people to get the Xbox series XS or PS5 which is currently impossible to get. I guarantee devolver digital will not make much money with serious Sam 4 being exclusive to Xbox series and PS5 because as a Xbox One X / PS4 Pro owner I don't have the next gen consoles Which makes me cry but the one X / PS4 Pro is more than capable of handling it Just like I am having the best time enjoying serious Sam collection on the 1X They look amazing at 4K and handle 60 FPS with no dips So there's no reason not to release serious Sam 4 for Xbox One and PS4 The game uses DRS So it should be able to run smoothly on the Xbox One at 900p 60fps PS4 1080p 60fps dynamic 4K 60fps on the 1X and PS4 Pro That's all I'm going to say.
Such a disgrace and a waste of time making serious Sam 4 exclusive for Xbox series and PS5? As a Xbox One X and PS4 Pro owner I am extremely upset. I guarantee Xbox One/PS4 is more than capable of handling a simple game like serious Sam Even I own the serious Sam collection for Xbox One. This is pathetically a market strategy to promote Xbox Series and PS5. Which is downright stupidity I am really tired of this exclusivity bull crap It's tarnishing many popular franchises being stuck on a certain platform. Even Serious Sam 4 takes advantage of dynamic resolution scaling so If I was working for croteam I can easily make this game run perfectly fine on Xbox One and PS4 by adjusting these graphic settings
Xbox One version 900p 60fps
PS4 version 1080p 60fps
Xbox One X version 2160p 60fps
PS4 Pro version 1820p 60fps
Trust me I know what I'm talking about I am currently learning to be a game developer with the unity engine It's fascinating how easy it is to adjust graphic settings to get buttery smooth 60fps I have done this for a long time with gaming laptops adjusting the in-game resolution to get buttery smooth 60fps gameplay with vertical synchronization enabled This is pure laziness on devolver digitals part And they should be ashamed of themselves for not caring about the majority of people who mostly own a Xbox One or PS4 does anyone agree?
