Like it or loathe it, PlayStation is diversifying. In addition to making television shows and PC ports, the organisation has also expressed interest in adapting some of its biggest franchises to smartphones. While the firm has released mobile games in the past – and Sony Music, in particular, has enjoyed enormous success with Fate/Grand Order – the Japanese giant is looking to solidify its pocket gaming push.
And it’s no major surprise, as the State of Mobile 2022 annual report pegs overall spend in the smartphone gaming sector at an eye-watering $116 billion last year. To put that number into perspective, PlayStation as a whole generated $24 billion in revenue for the fiscal year that ended 31st March, 2021. Obviously this isn’t a like-for-like comparison, but it gives you a rough indication of the kind of finances involved.
In terms of consumer spending, games like Roblox and Genshin Impact led the way, alongside other household names like Candy Crush Saga and Among Us. Fascinatingly, people are spending more time than ever playing mobile games, with some users reaching almost five hours per day. It all puts into perspective Take Two’s recent $12.7 billion buyout of Zynga, which seemed mind-boggling at the time, but makes more sense with these numbers being tossed around.
Exactly what Sony’s smartphone push will look like is still unclear, but we know that WipEout Rush is set to release at some point later this year. Of course, it’s incredibly difficult to land a hit in the mobile gaming space, but PlayStation certainly has enough recognisable intellectual properties and resources to reach the promise land. It’ll be fascinating to see what it has in store for this sector when it makes more announcements over the coming months.

Can someone tell me why there STILL isn't a native port of Roblox on the PS4/5?
In the end it's the micro-transactions that boost the profitability of these games.
Personally, I'd rather play gaming on the go with physical controls, hence me owning a PSP, then a Vita and now.....oh.
And people moan about Microtransactions in console games lol they are just the minority and will never be heard, mobile games (especially gatcha) are even worse and costs £50+ for a chance to get a few decent pulls, yet still rake in the money.
Same with NFT's, I see people moaning but the games sales won't go down
Also considering Sony's home market is dominated by handheld and mobile gaming I think it was their timing that has held them back. They had the Vita and their own range of Xperia phones but their conviction never matched their ambition.
@sanderson72 Yeah, it's bizarre. They've repeatedly said it makes sense but I've no idea why it hasn't come out yet.
Let me buy games without micro transactions and ensure I can earn trophies. That’s it. I’ll buy them.
I mean you admit yourself it’s nothing new and has existed for years but it’s as if people should like or loathe the ‘change’ 🤷🏼♂️
I don’t see anything surprising or shocking as long as they keep focusing on console gaming 😅
Well Sony now is owner of Fate/Grand Order (one of the biggest gachas in Japan and the world) and the studio who made it is also now Sony's so I think is just a matter of time before we see more mobile games.
@thefourfoldroot Not even fussed about the trophies (never have been!) but yes, a game without micro-transactions is always welcome.
I don't mind it if it's an optional payment for character costumes, etc. so long as it's not a pay-to-win financial model.
I actually doubt Sony’s IP will be successful on mobile. It’s a different audience.
Even Nintendo has been struggling with games like Dr. Mario that would seem like a great fit for mobile, but ended up doing poorly.
@lolwhatno yeah development cost for starters, it won't be long before more and more games like genshin impact start coming to console though. Other devs will see its success and want more cross mobile/console gatcha games.
Gatcha is far far worse than micro transactions and NFT's (which was the point I was trying to make originally sorry)
@sanderson72 remember when Fallout 4 added mods but Sony force tons of limitations on what kind of mod could be in the PS4 version of the game? I think that’s the issue. Roblox is basically all about user generated content (art/game modes/everything) and I have a feeling the bulk of that is precisely the kind of stuff Sony prevents games to offer.
Add mobile studios, let them do their separate thing, keep it out of the way of the main course and I'll be fine it.
Mobile games may have made $116 billion in 2021...but not a single penny of that came from me.
And it never will.
As a gamer since the Atari 2600 days, I know full well what it's like to be "left behind" when the industry pulls up stakes and moves on to "greener pastures". 2D platformers pretty much disappeared for two entire console generations following Super Mario 64's release. SRPGs like Shining Force and Front Mission got bastardized into mediocre action games and we never saw them in their proper, original forms since. Once prolific companies like Sega now churn out endless iterations of their most profitable IPs like Sonic and have left mountains of beloved franchises untouched for years or even decades. FPSes and violent tropes became so dominant that a Japanese developer at E3 2010 remarked "You Americans must really enjoy war" (and since then most Japanese, foreign, and smaller publishers have stopped bothering to attend the show because they were constantly ignored in favor of the media coverage for the latest Call of Battlefield: Madden's Creed).
I'm not saying that mobile and console games can't or won't coexist, but I have seen enough to realize that industry priorities shift to where they think the money is. And that always, ALWAYS comes with a price that affects gamers. And though I realize that individually I don't mean anything to these companies, I still intend to keep voting with my wallet and hope there are others out there who will do the same.
@Medic_Alert
Apple Arcade is different from regular mobile offerings. They don’t allow ads, iap, or other free-to-play tactics.
Heh I feel like many of us are part of a gamer demographic on the verge of digital extinction. These companies have prefectly marketed their uh...modern... gaming ideas to the younger generations who in turn completely outnumber the more traditional console/pc gaming demographic. It is what it is, I guess.
Good for them, as long as their regular developers waste no resources on mobile gaming then there's nothing to complain about. Hell I hope they take off and make them megabucks so they can reinvest that money into their standard games/studios.
It would help if they concentrated on quality.
Discount the WipEout licence and Rush isn’t actually a bad way to kill 5 minutes on the bus. (It got soft launched on Android in the U.K.) But it could easily have been more in depth and made better use of the licence by framing you as an AG team manager making split-second decisions during full 3-lap races.
What Sony could do is use mobile to revive some dormant franchises that would actually work for mobile. Loo rock is an obvious one. They could offer the first world for free and then the rest as IAP with maybe the different coloured blobs as cosmetics. Patapon would be a good fit too.
I wonder which of Sony’s first-party devs will be roped into making mobile games. Because naturally, everything Sony is doing in their bid to chase after other markets is coming at the direct expense of the PS community. More resources that go into PC/mobile, the less resources that go into PlayStation.
What percentage of that large amount of money was from game sales rather than microtransactions? I'm guessing single digits.
GTA 6 will certainly have an online component in the single player to encourage more people to GTA Online and somehow it will tie in to the mobile game they will develop.
Completely forgot that WipEout Rush existed. Hope that Sony recognizes the potential of a new gamer as a flagship for PSVR2.
A proper new WipEout with racer-like ship customization and licenses/cups, etc. would be insane. VR would be icing on the cake.
“ PlayStation as a whole generated $24 billion in revenue for the fiscal year that ended 31st March, 2021.”
Just to clarify, thats how much revenue Sony made from Playstation, not how much total revenue generated for all parties. That number would be around $60B
@Tharsman It may be that Roblox can incorporate patches that include unauthorised executable code, thereby be a big security hazard...?
Can't believe people who mocked us for playing video games are now playing these cash grabbing things.
Don't like this at all look at Nintendo with mario kart tour constantly adding new content to that while abandoning the main game
it is a different demographic entirely without much overlap. vast majory of mobile gamers are casual gamers who enjoy the mainstream offerings such as candy crush or angry birds (do people still play this? haha) to pass the time while on the bus to work, so of course there is a wide reach with that type of content. that really should not be lumped together with console and pc gaming. i think it is insulting to place console gaming in the same sentence as mobile if i am being honest. sure, in some cases there are console ports on mobile and vice versa, but vast majority of games you will find on the app store are designed to be brainless and hold all but 5 minutes of your time before shuffling to a new game. to compare the revenue generated from mobile games is unfair due to the fact nearly every human being in the developed world now owns a mobile device out of necessity and are already in the ecosystem.
@art_of_the_kill what exactly are they doing at our expense? They've bought studios that make mobile games. They've bought a studio that specialises in PC ports! These are to bring in extra revenue for the company. Not take anything away from the PS community, maybe even add people to the PS community!
They've stated they have 25 games in development, nearly half being new ip for the ps5/4. We have an amazing line up of games coming this year, I'd argue its better than either MS or Nintendo. For me it's never been a better time to be a PS gamer.
more indie trash ruining console : (
I guess I'm out of touch. I dont play any mobile games and im a HUGE gamer.
99% of games don't translate well to touch screen and I dislike touch screen in general. It's not as atrocious as motion controls but it's bad. This is why I don't support 99% of mobile games and it will never become my primary or even secondary device. Smart phone games are for 5 min intervals when you're taking a dump.
I think this new wipeout will be shut down not long after it's launch, I don't understand why the heck sony didn't make racing game with gatcha (like nintendo mario kart tour) rather than this weird card game.
Yes, stealing candy from babies is easy.
But, not everyone is a baby. If Sony or any other company prefers to be a "steal candy from baby" company, so be it. I will take my business to a company that is trying to get my money with a good product instead. No problem.
@Excess Those games' perceived failures (and make no mistake, all of them made a ton of cash and none were failures) have nothing to do with the IP, though. They "failed" because they weren't good.
@UltimateOtaku91 That's the problem, people complain but don't have the self control to stop themselves from buying it anyways.
Madden and Fifa are terrible year after year? Complain and buy it. Nintendo online expansion pack too expensive? Complain and buy it. $70 games slowly becoming the new standard?... weirdly embrace this one.
Gamers don't seem to have the strongest of wills.
@BeerIsAwesome @Tharsman I think you're both absolutely right.
The fact that Roblox is on the XBox platform to me indicates a kind of exclusivity but you'd have thought that kind of exclusivity (given it's not a MS product) would have expired by now so it does give the idea of not allowing user-generated content some traction.
The devs have said they'd like to do it and were looking into it but nothing ever came of it - Sony blocking perhaps?
I expect we will see regulation on micro-transaction heavy/gatcha mobile business models at some point. These are bubble numbers. Too addictive, too successful at separating people from their money. It’s just Slots 2.0, only somehow more pathetic because at least you can win some money at a casino. It’s sad to see and I want no part of it. Big loss of respect for anyone doubling down in this space, Sony and Nintendo included.
I hate mobile gaming with a passion and everything that bled into the mainstream gaming from this garbage.
@sanderson72 Hence why a Switch makes perfect sense. Sony ain't never making another handheld. Switch is everything Vita dreamed of being and more. 😉👑
I’m for this, if we can get mobile games with trophies
Super depressing...
