If you’ve been searching for a Mario Kart alternative on PlayStation, and KartRider: Drift isn’t really scratching your itch, then Disney Speedstorm could be the answer. Currently announced for “PC and consoles”, with Nintendo Switch being the only confirmed device, this is a “hero-based battle racing game” with characters like Jack Sparrow, Mickey Mouse, and Mulan.
It’s being developed by Gameloft, who you may be familiar with on smartphones. The team has a history with racing games like Asphalt 9: Legends, and while that title has yet to release on either the PS5 or PS4, we’re assuming this one will drift-boost its way to Sony’s devices. We’ll check with the developer to find out for sure.
In terms of gameplay, though, this is pretty much exactly what you’d expect it to be. Each character has different statistics, so some are fast and others are strong. It’s a free-to-play title, so expect to be paying to play as some Disney and Pixar icons, and there’s mention of Battle Passes and seasonal updates in the press materials, so all the usual live service hooks will be present.
There is a distinct lack of arcade racers on PlayStation platforms these days, though, so hopefully this one makes the boost jump to Sony’s box.

oh my god what a freakin TEASE ! give me SPLIT SECOND 2 !!! that’s all i saw in this trailer ! 😭
If it's from Gameloft, it's probably going to be a soulless free-to-play game. Now with Sulley!
Honestly missed the Disney Infinity aesthetic quite a bit, so this did catch my eye during the Nintendo Direct. The F2P angle is probably gonna hamper it, but if this kicks off some sort of proper revival for the Infinity franchise (minus the pricey physical add-ons), I’m intrigued!
F2P + Gameloft? Thanks but no thanks
As soon as I saw Gameloft was involved, my interest disappeared. Asphalt 9 is full of menus and micro transactions.
It's free 2 play so I'll give it a chance!
Given PS4/5 owners are still waiting on the dlc upgrade to the Disney Collection,(with The Jungle Book & Snes Aladdin),despite the ps4 physical release & digital ones elsewhere months ago, I suspect it'll be a while seeing this even if it were any good!
Nah I'm good, I'm keep waiting for a direct sequel to Sonic Transformed (please don't mention Team Sonic 🤢) that will probably never come.
I was instantly super excited for this when it popped up during the Nintendo Direct... until the "free to play" reveal, then my interest dropped to zero.
Oh man, I'm a total Disney nerd, so I was excited about this for about 5 minutes. Then I saw F2P. And Gameloft. Sigh. Can we just have Disney Infinity back without the oversaturated toy angle?
Still hoping for a new Modnation Racers!
Free 2 Play no thanks.

Free to play? No.
Free2Play = Pay2Win
The 1 second of gameplay looked promising, then you lost me at free to play. BUT, my kids will probably enjoy this so it has legs.
Oof, Gameloft. Keep it. You'll spend more time navigating your way out of menus and mtx nagging than you will navigating through races.
Was interested until it said Gameloft. Micro-transaction hell.
@nomither6 I’d take a sequel to Split/Second! One of the best racers of all time IMO.
Like everyone else, was excited until I saw F2P. Will still give it a shot, but not as excited haha
Wasn't Disney on a gaming redemption path?
As in ditching shiiity devs and focussing on quality?
Oh well, not surprising the Mouse is making an exploitative developer make a kids game... Lol
@AdamNovice Same. How come the Switch gets this and Kotor while PS4 is left as the only console without these 3 games
I imagine Switch users will be too busy racing the new MK8 tracks that are on the way.
actually having this f2p sounds neat, since at least MP shouldn't be behind a psplus paywall, though it lokks like Ninentendo is keeping the subscription paywall up.
@JosephTheSheik it's really odd to me that portal didn't make it to PS/Xbox. Especially PlayStation
4/5 considering it will be the only modern consoles that don't have portal available on them.
@hobbes242 You are correct
@JaneBear I don't know why, but trying out the new version of Coconut Mall is the one part of it that I'm most hyped about!
