When the brand new Witcher game was announced yesterday — developed using Unreal Engine 5 — CD Projekt Red also clarified that Cyberpunk 2077's upcoming expansion will still use the studio's in-house REDengine. However, the company's statement on the matter has raised some eyebrows because of its use of "expansion" rather than "expansions".
For reference, here's the tweet:
With this in mind, fans are now wondering whether Cyberpunk 2077 is still getting two expansions. Even before its release, CDPR went on record saying that the open world RPG would receive more post-launch support than The Witcher 3 — and that this would include two paid expansions, similar to what was added to Geralt's grand adventure. The developer has since reiterated this multiple times throughout Cyberpunk's life, referring to 'Expansion 1' and 'Expansion 2' in press materials and support roadmaps.
Now, obviously, things didn't go smoothly for Cyberpunk 2077 at launch. The game essentially shipped unfinished — especially on consoles — and further complications caused by the pandemic forced CDPR to alter its post-release roadmap significantly, even to the point where it delayed the PlayStation 5 version of Cyberpunk into 2022.
It's fair to assume that all of this has had a knock-on effect with regards to the aforementioned expansions. It could well be that only one expansion is guaranteed at this point, and CDPR's wording certainly suggests that it's only thinking about the first expansion right now.
A tweet from Cyberpunk's lead quest designer Pawel Sasko only reinforces this, in which Sasko writes: "We are hard in work to deliver you the best #Cyberpunk2077 expansion we only can and I’m personally completely focused on it my chooms".
So yeah, it's a bit weird that CDPR is specifying 'expansion' rather than 'expansions'. We're sure all will become clear in the relatively near future, but in the meantime, we've reached out to CDPR for clarification. We'll update this article if we hear anything back.

Hmm, it’s possible the two expansions have morphed into one single large project. It’s also possible they are simply referring to the task at hand, with work on the second expansion not started yet. Either way, I’m sure they’ll get flack!
Technically they could just be referring to the nearest expansion as they refer to an ‘upcoming expansion’. The other one might be years away.
@Jimmer-jammer more than.likely - but that's not such a good story is it 😅
@Jimmer-jammer Or it's possible, from a business perspective, that they are kinda investing less and less in cyberpunk and investing more in this very respected and love frenchise called The Witcher. They are even using well established engine to minimize bugs.
It's all about recovering from the fiasco that cyberpunk was.. and making money
I'm not honestly too bothered, can't see me buying. Completed it at the weekend and to be honest, I can't see me going back to it.
It was a fine game, story was decent, not on par with The Witcher 3 but good enough.
By the end though, I felt like I had spent enough time with it to be satisfied that I am done with it.
For the £20 I paid it was a solid pickup.
Onto the next Witcher game!
@nessisonett That's my thinking, as well. Too much is being assumed out of the use of a singular noun.
@Dudditz09 If I had payed only 20€ for it, I would agree with you.
But lesson learned from my part. Never ever ever pre-order a game. (I did the same mistake with deathstranding)
No rush, get it right. The current state of the game is very good imo.
@LowTech yeah, I might have not been so forgiving had I paid full price and had to suffer the game in its launch state. Can feel your pain there
Honestly I just want them to focus most of their resources on next Witcher game.
Didn't they say the 'next gen version' was one of the two promised expansions? It came with the ability to buy apartments, some new weapons and a weapon shop.
I think folks are just reading a bit too much into it. I wouldn't be surprised if they had the second expansion in early production before the game released. They probably just want to focus most of their efforts on the 1st expansion before going into too much detail on the second.
I am just glad we are finally talking about Expansions in general.
There are so many story directions they can go with. Would also love some to focus on back stories for a few characters.
@KingPev Fair play!
@LowTech yeah, I think it’s safe to assume that the resources originally allocated to the expansions have probably been spent on polishing, so yes it’s also possible that they are moving away from Cyberpunk. Nothing they’ve said or done screams that to me yet, though.
Complete speculation time: I think their reputation means enough to them to come through on Cyberpunk and they’re willing to take whatever financial hit that entails.
@nessisonett 'Years away?' Witcher 3 got its DLC 5 months and 12 months after it's release respectively. Even if we consider Feb 2022 (patch 1.5) Cyberpunk's 'real' release date, I'd expect a small DLC in 6 months and a bigger one in a year or less. After Feb 2023, I don't think we can expect any CP 2077 DLC.
Probably announce Cyberpunk 2078 for a May 2022 release first. They love rushing out broken games
@Fyz306903 Ok? I really don’t care to be honest, just guessing here same as everyone else.
Just finished the game yesterday on PS5, grabbed it for 10$ a few months back knowing the problem but hoping things would turn around.
Had a good experience with it and would gladly get the expansion of the content is interesting.
Cyberpunk 2077 fans left wondering if they'll get expansions? Maybe they can both commiserate over it... I jest!
Tbh I'm just glad they finally got the base game working.
maybe expansion 1 will be on redengine like they said and exspansion 2 will move to unreal engine 5 and give us a brand new area/map away from nightcity that way it wont affect any thing in night city
Probably best not to announce expansions before the game itself is even out
They might just roll all their work into one expansion kind of like what happened with bloodborne. (It will definitely not be as good as old hunters)
2 smaller expansions or one larger expansion, doesnt matter to me as long as we get a good amount of content.
cdpr should make the expansion as a standalone game
Finished CP77 right now (one ending, another yesterday). It was great, but I'am little confused while in my inventory hud I have 90, 60 and 40 percent on those trackers and suddenly "point of no return" while I've finished all gigs and side quests (without ncp reports of course, because there are hunderets of them and it is huge repetitive boredom). And I think I had enough of that game and cannot see any reason to return to it, unless dlc is free and its content is not longer than 2 hours.
@Jimmer-jammer I really really really (emphasis on really) hope you are right. But honestly, either they keep their word or not and stop investing on cyberpunk, the next witcher will sell like crazy, so people will forgive and forget, and cyberpunk will be just a memory. And that in my opinion is not correct.
I just platinumed this game yesterday and I have to say I liked it much better than I initially did. That said though, I'm not so sure I'd be going back to it any time soon. Whenever they release DLC for it, I'd be more inclined to wait until it's ALL out (if there's gonna be more than 1 DLC pack) and get it on sale at some point. All in all though, I was pretty blown away at the size, scope and detail of the world CDPR has created in that game, even if the gameplay got a bit repetitive and same 'ol, same 'ol after a while.
Could they potentially be planning to port the game to unreal 5? No idea if that sort of thing is feasible but if it is that could explain their wording. The first expansion is already deep in development and will come out for the current red engine version and the second will drop when the port is done.
Or maybe they feel they've damaged their reputation so much already that it doesn't matter if they don't deliver on their promises a second time.
