If you’re Square Enix, how do you follow the release of Triangle Strategy? Well, you announce another bafflingly named strategy RPG for PlayStation consoles, of course. The DioField Chronicles is SQUARE ENIX with caps-lock on: it’s got the confusing user interface, dreadful English dub, and cliché fantasy plot. And it’s coming later this year.
One of two big new announcements from the Japanese publisher – but perhaps not the game PlayStation fans wanted to see – it promises a “unique and beautiful world that blends fantasy, medieval, and modern-day influences with a deep yet innovative real-time battle system”. You can find out more on the PS Blog – or, y’know, just watch the trailer. You’ll get the gist of it pretty quick.

This game looked amazing so I'm all in for it as long as it plays well.
Pretty presumptuous to already say there's a confusing user interface and cliche fantasy plot amongst other things from just a brief trailer.
@mwatcher It's like he's not a fan of the genre. Sammy needs to be looking at these things a bit more objectively considering his position as head editor.
I'd rather have Triangle Strategy on PlayStation than this. Looks rough, but I suppose it's early days.
ngl, with how the overworld map was shown at 0:30, I immediately thought of Final Fantasy Type-0 and thought maybe this will be tied within that game's lore. Still an interesting title and worth checking out.
@ShogunRok, It looks miles better than Triangle Strategy. Every games that is exclusive to Nintendo gets overrated.
Looks rough, but I love Triangle Strategy, so I’ll keep an eye on it.
@Sil_Am Have you played Triangle Strategy? It’s one of the best games so far this year.
Not a big RTS fan so I’ll probably skip this. Would have preferred a game like Tactics Advance. Now there’s a classic.
@somnambulance Don't own a Nintendo, and don't plan to get one.
@Sil_Am You’re missing out. Triangle Strategy is essentially the spiritual sequel to Tactics that many fans have dreamed of.
I'm not familiar with games like this, but I loved Fire Emblem: Awakening, so I'll keep this on my radar.
That trailer begs the question "Can't we all just get along?".
Game has potential IMO. Just now playing (and enjoying) Fire Emblem: TH on Switch, and am interested in Triangle Strategy.
Maybe by the time this game comes out I will actually be able to buy a PS5.
Triangle Strategy this is not
Why does everyone love being so negative? This is another game that a lot of people will enjoy, if it's not for you then fine. Not everyone loves every game.
@Sil_Am So you know the Nintendo games are overrated even though you don't have the platform to play them?
Im interested in this game. It feels like Fire Emblem. I hope the story is very interesting.
@Apfelschteiner. A lot of people here on pushsquare are negative. When something is good they think it should be better.wtf🤔.its ridiculous.they should make theyre own game if they think they know so much.the game looks cool.thats a fact black.word up son
Nope. Not buying this nor triangle strategy until they deem to grace us with Final fantasy tactics 2.
Like seriously, it's a waste of time and money to invest on square strategy series that just get abandoned. So, i won't even start.
Make FFT2 and i may regain that trust.
the character dialogs look like 90's pc games
Maybe Square Enix should use that Graphics on FF Tactics remake instead of giving us this new Strategy video game.well it is just my opinion.
Hard pass I suck at strategy games, but hope everyone else has a fun time!
A strategy game and an SE game with an actual art style, I'm interested!
@FredBiletnikoff Nintendo games are overrated. Multiplatform games often receive higher scores on Switch even though, they are often technically inferior. The reason being is that Nintendo fans actually want the games to be good, rather than looking for something to slag off.
@playstation1995 The writers kind of set the tone on this one! There are plenty of entertaining TV shows are games that have a cliched, simple, or ridiculous plot. A lot of the charm of Japanese games is that Japanese essence. Videogames are often very videogamy and that's just fine. Showa American Story looks like an entertaining piece of hot garbage and the Shadow Warrior games are all about being fun. I lot of Western games have just got too woke and forgot about letting the player have fun. Days Gone was a refreshing game that kind of broke that mould, but that made it a target for reviewers.
Totally unassuming , unbiased opinion right there.
Might aswell say you hate the genre.
Looks good, reminds me of Fire Emblem. I reckon I I'll get it.
I really don't understand the negative tone of this article, it comes across as very fanboyish and I'd expect better from Push Square. Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy are both fantastic RPG's with an amazing art style and Square Enix are the masters of RPG's. So why would you spin a new, possibly PS exclusive RPG from Square in a negative way?
@Apfelschteiner Some pretty small minded generalisation going on there in your comment.
Triangle Strategy is so 🔥 🔥 🔥
I wasn't expecting the game to hit this hard but holy crap. I'd even say I rank it above Fire Emblem as my new fave SRPG of all time, and I'm a FE diehard. The story is so good! It's like HD-2D Game of Thrones with the most satisfying grid based strategy you could imagine. Muah!
I saw this Diofield Chronicle is coming to all platforms, and has good music and Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy vets working on it. I'll definitely keep an eye on it. Triangle Strategy has put me in the mood for more SRPG goodness
@JaxonH For you to rank it above Fire Emblem is pretty high praise indeed. I'll be getting it for sure at some point, I just need to eliminate a few RPGs from my backlog first. Next up is Dragon Quest XIS.
@OorWullie
Fire Emblem is super good. I never thought I'd like an SRPG that had turn order as opposed to all units moving for team A, then all units for team B. But this game... it just does it right.
It's got a mature story that develops properly over many chapters, so that when it starts to pop off, you're thoroughly invested.
