After months of speculation and rumours, Sony has officially unveiled its plans for merging its PlayStation Plus and PS Now services under one roof. This new subscription service will retain the PS Plus branding but will be broken down into three tiers. Launching in June, we'll have PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Premium. We've broken down all three tiers, detailing what each one will give you.
PS Plus Essential — £49.99/$59.99 Per Year
The PS Plus Essential tier is the same as we've known for years past; it'll include all those same benefits like one PS5 and two PS4 titles each month as well as access to online multiplayer. Your current PS Plus membership will be automatically converted into a PS Plus Essential one in June. Then you can choose to upgrade to the higher tiers. PS Plus Essential includes:
- The same features included in the PS Plus subscription as we know it today
Monthly pricing: £6.99/$9.99
PS Plus Extra — £83.99/$99.99 Per Year
PS Plus Extra includes everything from the PS Plus Essential tier alongside nearly 400 downloadable PS5 and PS4 games. At launch, the line-up will include Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal.
"We’re working closely with our imaginative developers from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners to include some of the best gaming experiences available with a library that will be regularly refreshed," says Sony.
PS Plus extra includes:
- Provides all the benefits from the Essential tier
- Adds a catalog of up to 400 of the most enjoyable PS4 and PS5 games – including blockbuster hits from our PlayStation Studios catalog and third-party partners. Games in the Extra tier are downloadable for play.
Monthly pricing: £10.99/$14.99
PS Plus Premium — £99.99/$119.99 Per Year
As the most expensive option, PS Plus Premium includes everything from the PS Plus Essential and Extra tiers, and then adds PS3 (and PS5 and PS4 games, if you wish) game streaming on top as well as the ability to download PS1, PS2, and PSP games.
- Provides all the benefits from Essential and Extra tiers
- Adds up to 340 additional games, including:
- PS3 games available via cloud streaming
- A catalog of beloved classic games available in both streaming and download options from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations
- Offers cloud streaming access for original PlayStation, PS2, PSP and PS4 games offered in the Extra and Premium tiers in markets where PlayStation Now is currently available. Customers can stream games using PS4 and PS5 consoles, and PC.
- Time-limited game trials will also be offered in this tier, so customers can try select games before they buy.
Monthly pricing: £13.49/$17.99
If you already subscribe to PS Now, you will automatically be converted over to the PS Plus Premium tier with no changes to the pricing of your active membership. "In the June timeframe, we’ll begin with an initial launch in several markets in Asia, followed by North America, Europe and the rest of the world where PlayStation Plus is offered. We aim to have most PlayStation Network territories live with our new PlayStation Plus game subscription service by the end of the first half of 2022."

No surprises really. After all the anticipation, it’s basically what we thought it was.
This sounds pretty good! As expected, it's the best they can do without putting brand new games on there, which is fair enough.
PS Plus Extra sounds just like Game Pass Ultimate, so I'm definitely interested in that.
But PS Plus Premium is too expensive just to get access to old games.
No pricing on the premium tier yet?
Any support for ps3 discs on ps5 with the premium?
Too vague Sony we need more details like what PS1,PS2, and PSP games will be offered.
In their statement they say that PlayStation Now customers will migrate to the PlayStation Plus Premium package. Would you say it’s worth getting a PlayStation Now subscription before June to take advantage of that as I assume that would be a lower price?
So to keep Plus and Now which I have, I'm gonna end up paying the same amount I paid before without anything new? Did I get this right?
I'm genuinely asking, I didn't quite get the difference.
@Niktaw $18, €17 or £13.49 each month depending on your region.
So it's just PS+ and Now merged into one sub at the Premium tier. Pricing is about £100/year for the two currently, so we'd better not be seeing anything in excess of that at the top tier.
No PS3 in the Extra pack? Is it not in the PS Now service? Anyway I am also waiting for the availability since in my region we have Plus but not Now currently.
@get2sammyb Do you think the additional games on there will be what's always going to be there or do you think Sony will add new games over time here and there.
Amazing but please let us pay per month.
@Snake_V5 "At launch, we plan to include titles such as Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal. We’re working closely with our imaginative developers from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners to include some of the best gaming experiences available with a library that will be regularly refreshed."
Sounds good to me. I might upgrade to the mid tier depending on the games list (I already own most of those mentioned in the post but there's "up to 400" more).
Also curious about the alternative pricing for non-PS Now regions.
@itsfoz there are monthly, quarterly and annual options for all tiers
Okay, so I’m now actually genuinely interested in PS Plus for the first time since PS5 launched. I might dip in for a couple months and see how it is before considering any annual purchase.
PS3 games only via streaming really, really, really sucks, but PS1 and PS2 games - depending on the selection and if they include trophies etc. might win me over. First impressions are that this is basically a nothing announcement.
Answered my own question - it's £99.99/year for the Premium plan. Annual pricing is as follows, from the PlayStation.Blog article:
Essentials - £49.99/year (same as current PS+)
Extra - £83.99/year (meh)
Premium - £99.99/year
@LtSarge Well I hope the PS1, PS2 and PS3 games are the ones that will be regularly refreshed too.
120$ to play PS1, Ps2 and PSP games?
And people complained about Nintendos pricing lol
@Resi32 as it says PS3 games are only streaming, that's quite obviously a no.
@mrtennis1990 https://blog.playstation.com/2022/03/29/all-new-playstation-plus-launches-in-june-with-700-games-and-more-value-than-ever/
All the details are here, and monthly payments are available on all tiers. They should have included the link in the main article.
Options for Now and Plus are pretty much what I expected. Just waiting to find out what the classic games are first.
@DomGC PS1 and PSP games will be new, Now only has PS2-PS4 titles.
@PlayNation5 @Niktaw it's 99.99 for the year so a penny more than plus and now currently.
I'm glad the current tier is being kept as that's what I'm likely to stick with but I've got a Now sub currently so guess I will get upgraded to that Premium tier to try it out.
Also the game trials, are they basically what they've been doing with things like Cyberpunk 2077 and Death Stranding? If so then it seems a shame not to offer them to everyone as they will likely get more sales that way.
@PlayNation5 awesome thanks for the link. I think I’m just going to stick with the ps plus tier and see how everything pans out once the new service comes out. I was really hoping for downloadable PS3 games.
Doesn’t sound like a “splashy” group of recent hits as was rumored. None of those games are all that recent.
Essentially $216 annually for Premium if paid monthly. *vomit
You'll save nearly 50% by paying the $120 outright for the year.
I'll stick with the regular sub.
@Snake_V5 In terms of PS3 games, I think they are just including all the ones from PS Now. I don't know about PS1, PS2 and PSP though. Maybe they'll just add all the ones that were on the PS3/Vita stores.
I'm a PS Plus subscriber but I also have PS Now until October. Unsure how/if they'll migrate mine, and into which tier...
Yeah I'll stick with the basic.
Not bad at all. 🤔
I wasn't expecting to see something like Returnal on it yet. That's very nice.
Yeah this isn't bad. I'm considering the top tier, but will wait for more details.
PS3 games only available via streaming is a big disappointment for me. Why Sony???
Thought we were getting PS Now with the base tier. This kinda sucks. Oh well....
The yearly price isn't as bad as I thought it would be. But their currency conversion is HORRIBLE as per usual.
Exactly as expected, looks great! Will most likely go for the top tier as its not too much more, look forward to seeing the list of older games!
Have now read the official article - Returnal on there and I bet they will add GT 7 by end of year so I’ll hold off those purchases. At £13.49 a month I’m in!
Sadly this is the pathway that gaming is taking; subscription services where games are basically rented, and streaming. Certainly not for me.
So they basically just combined PS Now with PS Plus and don't appear to be offering anything extra in terms of value such as Day-1 launch titles, plus it's more expensive than GamePass? I guess I'll continue to play third-party stuff on GamePass since it it cheaper...dang.
So no streaming from mobile devices? And I’m guessing I still wont be able to stream games using Remote play? I use my phone+Backbone a lot (!) and it works beautifully. But I would really like to be able to play all these games on the go. Now I need to go and hug my Vita…
Seems that if you do not have Now in your region there is another option:
PlayStation Plus Deluxe For markets without cloud streaming, PlayStation Plus Deluxe will be offered at a lower price compared to Premium, and includes a catalog of beloved classic games from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations to download and play, along with time-limited game trials. Benefits from Essential and Extra tiers are also included. Local pricing will vary by market.
I really like that cloud services are not available in my region. I will get the classic games cheaper 🙂
@__jamiie Not enough power for a good enough quality emulation
Not all that fuss about the free games. Main reason I'm a Plus subscriber is to play games online. Just add another tier solely for being able to multiplayer online for like $15-$20 a year then I'm happy.
This seems excellent. I'm down. Hopefully, Sony clarifies migration plans for current subscribers of PS+ and PS Now. The right thing to do would be to move us to the premium tier, but we'll see.
This is actually better than I was expecting. I’d like to see a definitive list of games for the Extra tier though. Will possibly get on board for the extra tier, however there is a back catalogue of games I’ve got to work through before I can justify upgrading to a higher price.
I can't wait. Held off having PS Now because I felt it was a bit excessive with all I have to play, but the subscription as a whole is really appealing. Hope there's an easy way to upgrade because I'm signed into PS Plus until like 2025.
@PlayNation5 And PS5!
As expected and very good. Lots of extremely niche whining notwithstanding I imagine this will be well received.
I'm happy with that, just curious how they will manage existing subscriptions to both services as most people have paid upfront
So what we don’t have in the top tier unless I’m wrong:
1)Cannot download all games? Some are streaming only.
2)Day one releases from Sony Studios not available.
And the same as Game-pass and Nintendo let’s play a load of old games, apart from game-pass you get day one releases from Microsoft studios.
I shall stick with my pay for the new AAA games as they turn up with Sony and Nintendo.
I have Plus ("essential") up until November. I wonder how they will deal with changes for people with current subs?
I'm tempted to go straight to the mid tier, as I can benefit from playing new(ish) PS4/PS5 games that I haven't bought yet. It does mean I'll be drastically reducing the number of existing games, cherry picking the odd AAA title from now on.
For me to go for Premium, it really depends on what the legacy games are like for it to be worth it for me. I still have my PS3 set up with a good selection of disc and digital games that I can easily access. I'm not too fussed about PS2 and I also have a good selection of PSP on my Vita, so hmmmm, decisions decisions!
But about time it was formally announced!
The one thing that does have me excited is that PS1, PS2 and PSP games are said to be downloadable. I’m curious if it means all of them or just some of them?
Guys it says this on the PS Blog about it,
As this is a massive launch effort, we’re rolling out the new PlayStation Plus offering in a phased regional approach. In the June timeframe, we’ll begin with an initial launch in several markets in Asia, followed by North America, Europe and the rest of the world where PlayStation Plus is offered.
So does this mean that UK will get it after June? Or last?
They haven't answered how they are addressing people who have PS Plus and PS Now stacked up.
I wonder if PSP is a lazy description for all portable games, or if Sony is pretending Vita doesn't exist again
What a mess.
Can't believe they went w/ that horrible naming plan. So every month PS now has to ask "What games do you want to see come to PS+ Essentials" and basically every other article has to include Essential. Why not just leave it PS+?
As someone who is confused every single month when games get added to #NintendoSwitchOnline Plus Expansion Pass (that's the actual way Nintendo tweets it out, the hashtag and then the rest after) this is unnecessary and will lead to lot's of questions.
Pricing seems same as it ever was. But the biggest downside is free trials are now in the most expensive tier Premium, seems really wrong to limit "free trials" to people paying the most money.🤑
@rjc-32 But PS1, 2, 4 and 5 are downloadable. I know people talk a lot about the Cell processor being difficult but, the PS3 and Xbox 360 are a lot more similar in architecture than people realise. Microsoft made that happen and Sony should have found a solution by now.
Anyone any idea why PS3 wouldn’t be able to be downloaded? Shame that.
Sounds good, unfortunately, I already own most of the heavy hitters that will be added to Extra tier.. I'll still probably go for it, once my suddenly attractive PS Now subscription runs out.
Do we know how long the games will stay on the service? I don't have much time to game and if a game leaves the service too fast I'll have to many unfinished games and it won't worth the price.
@Dislecksier defo giving it a miss then. I don't mind gamepass because of the variety etc but I'm a collector through and through and lack of support for physical disc's when xbox has been supporting them for years is just unacceptable.
This all seems sensible. Glad to see PS+ isn't changing much ALTHOUGH it's going to only be 2 monthly downloadable games going forward. That is fine by me as long as they are good e.g. the quality improved last time they removed PS3 games.
PS Now also needed a rebrand so again this is sensible
However as a multiplatform player, with a backlog, Game Pass and far too much to play already, I won't need be subscribing to this annually.
But I'd like to know how this will work if I want to upgrade my ongoing PS+ sub for a month at a time when there is a game I want like Returnal. Pricing will be key.
@Elodin if they are copying Gamepass (which they are but at 3 times the price) then it will be 24 months
Looking forward to clarifications and more information about the legacy stuff.
Big question from me would be if Premium for just PS5?
Edit: ah, does say PS4, PS5 and Console. But again, clarity required as I can't see PC having a download option.
Ok i bought MK11, but was waiting on rest of these AAA titles, guess i will have to invest to expand storage though
I prefer to own my games so still not interested. I'll keep an eye on things to see how things go before I make a final decision.
At least tell us which PS1/PS2 games will be available at launch lol
@james_holmes82 I'm thinking the same but know my plus runs out in July. There's going to be a away to get it cheaper somehow
@Resi32 oh that's plenty of time. Thanks for the info.
@Resi32 how is it 3 times the price? Surely the top gamepass isn't £33 for a year?
Pricey but Premium sounds good, that said Gamepass is much better value.
@Resi32 I hope not. Needing to pay a subscription to play discs I already own isn't it. Microsoft let's you do it for free even though it doesn't work on every Xbox game. Sony locking that behind a paywall wouldn't be a good look
@Elodin there is so much misinformation in @Resi32 post.
Game Pass games are all on for a different amounts of time. A few for less than a year, many for 1 year, some for 2 and a few for even longer. It isn't 24 months as standard at all.
Also PS+ is not 3 times the cost?? What are you on?
Game Pass (standard) is more expensive that PS+. In the UK it's £95.99 per year (unless you find a discount) whereas PS+ is £49.99... of course Game Pass offers a lot more value.
Game Pass Ultimate is £131.88 per year, but PS+ Premium is £99.99.
If the ps1,2, and VITA games are good and there are enough of them, and they have added trophy support, I might consider the top tier.
No interest in streaming to my TV, but if they eventually let us stream to phone then this will be good.
Went to buy ps now but, unfortunately, they only sell the 1 month version now lol.
As i usually get plus for £35, and have two years stacked, I’ll likely wait for some type of sale and my plus to run out though. Shame there is no plus upgrade path.
Will we have access to the extensive libraries of PS2 games tho? Can I finally play P3 Fes on my PS4/PS5? Why not include the Vita library, so many games are stuck in that system that needs exposure
I was charged $60 for PSPlus a week ago. If I want to upgrade to Premium, do I need to pay the full $120 or can I just pay the remaining $60?
Want to play old games easily emulated on potato laptops? Give us 100 quid a year. Want to play the games you already own? GTFO!!!... I am actually shocked how bad sonys treatment of back compat is compared to xbox. I will eat my words if they allow me to access my ps1+ps2+psp classics library, but this sounds like another cynical 'lets re-sell everything' money hungry approach, that sucks, DOA for me
The only thing I wanna know is will I have access to the old gen games I already own ? Or do I have to pay to play em ?
@get2sammyb This is probably the best we could have hoped for. A restructuring without making people like me who barely justify PS+ get the upper tiers and a general improvement in the games offered at the top tier. The best part of it is that it has been announced and we can stop speculating about it.
Sounds promising, but it'll be all about which games they can provide.
MS has kept Gamepass fresh with their own titles and new third party games, and Sony will have to provide some enticing third party games as well if the new Sony 1st party titles aren't part of the deal.
@Netbean that's answered my question Ty, I'm not paying again to play games I've already paid for
As expected. Im staying on Essential when I do reup it. Tried to tell folks this wasn't a gamepass competitor.
@themightyant ahh. Ok. I'll wait and see then.
My sub. Runs out at the end of may. I usually get psplus deals then but maybe not now as the new services start in June. I might have to let it lapse.
Proof is going to be in what the games are on that top tier. Also, they really need to be including DLC for games rather than just the basic package e.g. Fallout 3
@belmont If Sony want me to play PS1, 2, and 3 games, they can remaster them and put them out on PS4/5.
From "who wants to play old games" to making them available behind a paywall.
Based.
Okay I'm actually pretty hyped for this. Shame PS3 games are streaming only.
Really interested to see the entire catalogue.
@Snake_V5 The PS1, 2, and 3 games should be permanent additions (at least first-party games)
are those games permenant once you redeem them?
It’s going to be interesting to see how they separate ps5 games between extra and premium…I’m assuming game trials will be of the latest releases…and length of those trials will depend on the game… I wonder how much they’ll effect extras ps5 game offerings …what the cut off point will be between say Wolverine being a trial to becoming the full game experience…and if it’s say only 6 months how many people will simply wait those 6 months to get the game with extra rather than shell out for premium or buy the game out right.
Either way, the chance to play these games without spending £70 first is always going to work in gamers favour - hopefully those just on Sonys platforms will all understand this now that Sony themselves are doing it.
Don't forget that ps now wasn't available in most countries..so the new subscription model is a win.
Sounds like I'll be sticking to Essential. Premium briefly turned my head, but... STREAMING PS1 and PSP titles to PS4? Streaming a natively portable game to a home console? Yeah, no. Besides, PS4 normally doesn't seem to allow any streaming apps while casting a Remote Play session to begin with, so we'd be talking "literally unplayable" for the extra 70 bucks in my case. 😅
EDIT: on second look, seems like PS1 and PSP might be downloadable as well. But for a PSP and Vita user, Remote Playing them off a PS4 would still feel downright surreal.
@Dalejrfanfreak It sounds like they are shortening the window for new game releases until they come out on PS+.
@mariomaster96 It's a shame you can't just pay the $20 difference for the PS1, PS2 and PSP games and ignore the $100 for the rest.
well, sounds good. BUT, when compared with the Microsoft gold service, it's really weak. I am a bit disapointed
@get2sammyb It's good that they've finally announced this but honestly there are so many unanswered questions. E.g.
and many more
@Apfelschteiner No, I mean will they add new PS1. PS2, PSP games over time? Or what's there is what will always be there.
Also, what happens if you’re just on a psnow subscription today?
Imo, nothing special. Will keep buying my games the traditional way.
Would like to know if there is an upgrade path for current or running subscriptions.
Also, for the extra and premium tiers, are games available for both platforms (i.e. PS4 or PS5 versions of the games)?
If it's gonna be like PS Now where only PS4 version of the games available then I'm not gonna bother.
@Enigk Yeah that would actually be cool for me, I don't play online, own every PS4/PS5 game I'm interested in, my internet can't stream PS3 games good enough, I don't have interest in trials etc. Therefore it would be cool to have that option
@michaelf Your attitude is logical, basically reduce the amount you spend on games by subscribing and buying much less if any other games. This is what they are incentivizing and that is why I don't understand the business logic behind it.
@get2sammyb
Well, they could make all the older games downloadable. Too bad Sony botched the PS3 with the cell processor. Between the price, telling people to get a 2nd job to afford one, the cell making it difficult to develop games for, and the cell being the reason PS3 backwards compatibility isn't available, Sony's decision to be different really backfired on them for gamers like me.
Will be more like £80 using ShopTo to buy credit
Trophies are pretty much the only way to get me to play the older stuff now unfortunately (most of it anyway). So we shall see. But will happily pay for a month to play through Miles Morales and anything else I can squeeze in to one month. Shame everyone here hates subscription services right?
With PS Plus Premium and Game Pass Ultimate on the two current gen consoles, at $25/month USD combined, I'm in pretty damn good shape.
Can't wait to play Death Stranding and Returnal, and glad I held out!
These services are a good deal for someone who doesn't already have a backlog. And for retro stuff, as usual you're better off just putting together a good emulation setup yourself.
@thepaulcutts like ANY publisher will allow DLC to be part of the Subscription. Part of the 'reason' they are willing to 'give' you the FULL basic game for 'Free' (as part of the subscription charge) is to increase their 'user' base to have more 'eyes' on their in game store to purchase extras.
It removes the barrier to the 'basic' game and allows you to play the entire game with 'no' obligation to purchase 'extras' like DLC, but as you haven't spent £50+ on it and if you are enjoying the game, want to support the devs, then you are more likely to purchase those 'digital' extras. Its possible you may get a 'complete/GotY' edition but you're already getting the 'base' content for 'free' and still need to make money to continue 'developing' games in the future...
Sony may well offer some DLC/complete versions but I doubt you'll get many, if any 3rd Party Publishers to give away the only things they can actually make money back on to cover their costs...
@Bleachedsmiles You’re golden. If I’m reading the blog post right, current PSNow subscribers get automatically upgraded to Premium level. Whereas current PS+ Subscribers actually get a slight downgrade from 3 games per month to 2 games per month.
@Kang81 I can't think of a single game from PS3 that isn't on PS4 that I care about.
Question; why do ye leave out the euro prices in all articles? The euro prices are in the original article and ye chose to remove them?? Odd
@mrtennis1990
I'll have to guess that Sony doesn't have the chops to make a PS3 emulator for PS5 if that's even possible. The PS5 isn't very powerful.
PS2 is interesting though if they run natively. I won't stream a game.
Might check out the mid tier for a bit but I have enough owned games that I don't need a library of a bunch more right now.
@sentiententity Exactly. I'm never going to get these services because I still have a tonne of games in my backlog that I actually selected for myself, and probably a few more on regular PS+ that I would play if I ever ran out. Gaming is already a very budget hobby if you have some patience. I don't need this, but it would probably appeal to new gamers.
@SeanOhOgain The euro prices are the same as the dollars
@Royalblues GP gives day one games and if you want to play backward compatible games you don't have to pay...anything if you already own em
I need a game list first. Then we will talk.
£99 a year you say....well yes, here's my card, do what you gotta do...! XD
Time to buy PS NOW yearly cards before they are all phased out!!!
So if you get a PlayStation now 12 month subscription right now would you get moved onto premium from June without having to pay extra?
This is a downgrade for sure and a terrible deal.
PSPlus at the moment has 3 games -> PlayStation Plus Essential will have only 2 games.
PlayStation Plus Extra and Essential are PSnow divided into 2 separate services as PSnow had both downloadable and streaming services.
The number of games isn’t the problem, PSnow had a ton of games but streaming was bad and 95% of the games are shovelware. No mentioning of day one exclusives is an additional problem for all that cost.
@Royalblues By the sounds of it the differences are gamepass offers day 1 full games rather than trials. As well as EA play. As well as third party perks, xcloud, and a rewards system - I was really hoping PlayStation would adopt a similar rewards system.
South Africa is getting PlayStation Plus Deluxe aren't we... PLEASE give is streaming
PS Plus Extra sounds a bit ridiculous but I can understand PS Plus is such a brand name now you don't want to get rid of it.
Disappointing it doesnt come with a price cut for Plus Essential, or extra content. It feels like I'm now paying the same money for an 'essential' service while this used to be a 'Plus' service giving you all kinds of extra's.
Lol, those assh*les. I was just in the process of buying a 12 months PS Now subscription. At the end of the process, the site reloaded and brought me back. Now, there's only a monthly option available. (German store)
@mrtennis1990
This
I have PS Now until Feb 2023 and will add an extra year so i have 2 years at $80 for PS Plus Premium
I'm still confused of you already have a ps plus account what level of the new service will you I June?
Do people actually read the article?
@Pditty1980 I assume the 'essentials' tier as that tier is the same as the current PS+.
And bear in mind all the 50% off sales, Black Friday Deals, reduced PS Gift Card sales etc..
A shame that the PS1 and PS2 games are locked to the highest tier but overall it's about as good as it could be without new releases
Interested to see how often the games are 'refreshed' on the premium services. It's all well and good touting Returnal, Miles Morales, Death Stranding etc but will they be on the service indefinitely, or be removed after three months like games are on the current Now service?
@BAMozzy Game of the Year/complete was what I was thinking. Like they’ve done for Horizon Zero Dawn through the current PS Plus Game Collection. Old Games like the PS3 Fallout Games or Oblivion have GOTY editions so it would be better to include those as no one is going to be able to buy the dlc for those anyway.
@hi_drnick I was wondering the same thing. People are asking questions that are very clearly answered lol
@Apfelschteiner aye, I don't understand it either. After all, I will be getting hundreds of more games available in the two new tiers, however I still only have a finite amount of time to play them, so I am going to have to be choosy on what I play and buy.
It already takes me long enough to play the games I want (both in spare time and time to complete them), so whilst it's great to have a wider choice, it will mean that I'll be paying for the service (likely the second tier) first and significantly reducing new game purchases.
I reckon 2022 will have seen me buy three games - two physical and one digital. I know this as I've bought the digital (CP2020 as was £20), pre-ordered Lego SW and the other I currently want will be Gotham Knights. The rest will have to wait ...
Surely that's not good for other companies if this type of behaviour is replicated en masse, or am I just the exception here?
@sword_9mm PS5 is powerful enough to emulate PS3
PS3 is STILL streaming-only. 😱🤦♂️ PSnow had horrible performance for me years ago, thus I never bothered again with it. Plus the library sucked.
@Ogbert
I hope not as ps now subscribers are getting bumped up to the top tier I presume previous ps plus subscribers will too
Couple of questions:
The Sony site states 2 games for PS Essential, and no changes to the current offering for current PS Now subscribers - but current subscribers get 3 games. So is this a typo?
Currently if we cancel our PS Now sub we lose all the games we have built up so far even if we resub later - so no one cancels.
With the new middle tier - does this mean all those games will be in this, so if we cancel we can resub later and don't lose access when re-sub? So its a better system?
@michaelf For you maybe, I have bought loads - so this will definitely save me money
The other unexplained aspect comes in terms of upgrades. If I have years stacked of ps plus but may want to try ps plus extra, what's the price. If I have to pay the full tier price they can kiss my...
I love PSNow. I have found one of my favorite games on there, “Moving Out.” If this service can give us more of that, I’m in.
I’m 36 with a ten-year-old son who loves playing old games. He says he is doing “research” hey, I will take it; but anyway, this is a great way to give him access to more and for us to bond over games I loved as a kid his age.
@Palleon indeed, I can only speak for myself and yes it will save me a lot of money too
@Akila_24 Moving Out was really fun
@Tielo
But it clearly says 3 games, two PS4 and a ps5. Is that not how it is already?
“ it'll include all those same benefits like one PS5 and two PS4 titles each month ”
@mariomaster96 It's actually just $20 more a year for access to those games. It does suck if that's all you play. Personally, I would never play or stream them, so I am happy for the $20 savings. That was one of the major roadblocks for why I never signed up for PS Now. I didn't want to pay the cost of streaming and for a library of old old games. Now the middle tier is focused on games that I would actually play (most of the market would fall into this basket). The premium tier is for diehards who need their nostalgia fix (Sony knows that these folks will typically pay out for that fix).
@DomGC not really, psNow is not avaliable at all in Brazil so I'm getting a LOT of value from this, we still wont have ps3 streaming but thats why I still have my ps3.
Got by without PS Now so far and playing old games isn't for me
So can't see me changing my sub, I'll just keep the bottom tier.
Good too see some people are happy with it though.
@Dalejrfanfreak GamePass is hard to beat especially if you buy it when they have it half off during the holidays. I've been getting a year of GamePass every Christmas for around 60 bucks.
Essential = Xbox live
Extra = Game Pass
Premium = Game Pass ultimate
Probably not renewing my sub at all unless there’s an engaging line-up or a game with decent multiplayer later this year
If there’s a free trial, I’ll do it, but like PSNow, I’ll probably be good with one month of it.
Wait so for the Essential one I can still buy a year for $60 a year? Why in the world would anyone do the $10 monthly option? You would literally pay double the price a year. Am I reading that right?
As a Playstation casual, I'm super pissed that I'll need to pay a ludicrous amount of money for the top tier just to get PS1 and 2 games. I will literally never play online or touch any of the 400+ free games. I expected no less but still upset. Praying now there is some kind of family plan like NSO has so I can split the cost...
At £100 a year…. £8.99 a month… from the details we currently have…. Hand on heart I find it hard to believe anyone is excited for this…
Intrigued and wanting to know more but seriously no one can be truly excited by what we know so far.
The free upgrade from Now is awesome gives me 1.5 years to see what it’s like at no extra cost.
@carlos82
I guess I'd have to see the data.
From what I understand PS3 emulation is still hard on big boy PCs.
@thepaulcutts I still expect those games to offer the base game and sell you the DLC - not offer the GotY/collectors/special editions with any 'cosmetic' bonuses for 'buying' the game as that's where they can make their money back instead of from 'sales'
The reason they 'give' you games to play is also to open you up to buying additional content. If you don't have access to Fallout, Horizon etc, you'll never buy the extra content - so give you the 'game' free and 'if' you like it, want to support the devs etc, then you can buy 'content'. If they give you 'everything', then there is no way to make money.
Sony/MS has money coming in. As the platform holder, they get money as the 'retailer' for sales of extras, money from subs etc etc so may well offer more 'extras' than 3rd party publishers. Fallout on PS is a MS owned franchise and a 3rd Party publisher. It doesn't make sense to give 'everything' away free and then have no way to make 'extra' money - Sony too lose the '30%' retailer profit margin too on any potential sales...
At least they haven’t raised the price of Plus per year I had a real feeling they would Sony being Sony so far this gen. That’s good news.
kind sucks as a PSNOW only subscrber as to play the same stuff its now double what it was
I don't get the uproar about PS1/2 being updated regularly?! Why are you wanting to play these games still? Better yet, on a ps4/5...buy an old PS1/2 and play them or get the PS3 out and play them.
I'll probably pip for the mid tier depending on the games on offer. If it's anything like the current now lineup then I'll likely stick to essential. I've no interest in death stranding/returnal and I've played/own the others. Wouldn't mind seeing the likes of Sackboy: Adventure, the pathless etc. Games I've been wanting to play but haven't bitten at yet.
$120 to stream old PS games, lol.
PS Extra might be more worthwhile if they end up including their entire back-catalog of first-party games. I'll make sure not to buy any first-party releases for a while in anticipation of this.
Otherwise, it's not worth it.
@sword_9mm oh it's still difficult but that's largely down to the CELL'S SPE'S and the games that heavily utilised them, usually Sony first party games. I'd expect Sony to be able to write a better emulator if they were so inclined but I doubt it's a hardware limitations, more so a time and investment one
This is just PS Now and Plus put together. I don't understand what the big deal is, you could have had this already.
Why is PS Plus Essential only listed as "Two monthly downloadable games". Isn't that a downgrade to the current 2 PS4 + 1 PS5 lineup? 🤔
As with anything gaming these days, I'll wait until the reviews are in on the quality of it all before making a decision.
@Pat_trick im in the same situation, i sub to both already.
Extras will be the collections of best ps4 and ps5 titles, which sounds great, and of course the old stuff like ps2 or psp titles to download and play, which is also welcome.
Im not as excited for the old stuff, i have it all already and can play it on emulators on pc, but i know a lot of people were interested in this.
No suprises ps3 titles are streaming only... the hardware was always likely to be more difficult to emulate with consistent results, so this is the best solution.
Im very happy, im going to get more for less, so whats not to like?
@Royalblues cause gamepass is good...
I have plenty of games, so no thanks to higher tiers.
@get2sammyb PS Blog lists only 2 downloadable games per month, not the current 2 PS4 + 1 PS5 lineup. That is either an error or a sneaky downgrade.
Hopefully the 2 downloadable games is an error. Not that I've generally been bothered to download 3 but I didn't expect to get less for my money.
Given the number of 'free' PS+ games I've actually played I'd be tempted to go for an 'online only with demos and discount' level sub if they did one for 19.99 a year.
Seem good to me and Looks like I'm OK for Premium until end of October this year when my PS Now subscription runs out.
I have PS+ until April 2023 already. Assuming it might make sense to try and get a 'top up card' for my PS Now for about £40 to extend my current membership... only an existing PS Now subscription required to be automatically eligible for Premium for the same duration?!
Have I got that right???
@Titntin Thanks for the info! It's much clearer than anything I've read elsewhere!
Do we know whether there is some form of upgrade path from Essential to Premium, @LiamCroft? As is stands I will have 11 months or so of Essential, but would rather have Premium. However, 'rather' does not extend to buying Premium without my ownership of Essential being taken into account...
Can we pay to download PS1 and PS2 games without the subscription?
@Ralizah Streaming is only for PS3 not for PS1, PS2 and PSP
Slight hiccup on extending my PS Now subscription to match my PS+ until April 2023 - no upgrade cards available anywhere it seems 😂
@mariomaster96 Nintendo offers nowhere near the value of ps plus premium. The comparison is invalid.
@DomGC "People actually hyped this stuff up and it's literally the same thing we had before lol"
What are you even on about?
@Fiendish-Beaver An upgrade path hasn't been mentioned yet I'm afraid, if one does exist. All we know at the moment is those 11 months you have will be automatically converted into PS Plus Essential, and then you'll have the option of buying Premium.
Whether those 11 months are taken into account for the price you pay for Premium isn't known just yet. It would be nice if it is though. I have Plus until 2024 at the moment.
The names for each tier are kinda confusing. They should have gone with Silver/Gold/Platinum like their trophies. Or just Tier I/Tier II/Tier III.
The mid tier looks very interesting.
My question is what versions of the game will be on there? Will Death Stranding Director's cut be available or will it be the PS4 version?
Until I see the launch line up I’ll stick with essential. But if the line up is good and the cross Gen games are PS5 native versions, I’ll probably upgrade.
The top tier sounds good in theory, but I would need to see the PS1 and PS2 library to consider it. If it’s the same crap we’ve had for years on Now I won’t be interested.
Err, wow. £100 to play a mostly crap selection of PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP titles - oh, and those will also be without the DLC that added so much to PS3 games (Fallout 3, F1 Race Stars, etc, etc.)
Just bloody awful, Fony. Only hope for this not being a complete flop is if they can extract their finger and add a shed load more games AND their DLC for PS1, 2 and 3.
As for PS4 and 5? You're better off just buying the disc...
@daveofduncan
It’s a bit of a pain to mod PS1 and PS2s to output through HDMI. Plus you need a really good external upscaler like a Framemeister to make it look tolerable on a modern 4K tv. Those ain’t cheap.
The best solution for PS1 and PS2 is the original Phat 60GB PS3. However those things are horribly unreliable and you will pay through the nose to get one. Plus you better have access to reball equipment to reball the RSX or it’ll just YLOD on you constantly.
Waste of time, money and effort.
Difficult to make PS4 and PS5 backwards compatible with PS1, PS2 and PS3 games and yet it is easy and simple to merge PS Plus and Now?
Sony need to go back to the drawing board and think of a different approach.
Pretty much a rebrand of PS Now and sigh of relief. I'd like to keep the party going that we've had raging since the beginning. Just keep the big exclusives coming like we've had since PS1 and they get my continued support.
@carlos82 My laptop is about as powerful as a base ps4 and it can run ps3 games better than a ps3. It's not that Sony can't do it, they just obviously don't want to spend the money. Doesn't bother me tbh, but them not being able to do it is certainly internet myth making at it's finest.
Let's wait and see what's fully on offer before making judgments eh? It is a bit vague indeed, but this might turn out decent, lets wait and see.
I usually enjoy push square comments but the whining and entitlement on this article is ridiculous.
I understand this may sound whiney
For their premium subscription service they maybe should consider adding whatever Sony owned movie and TV shows to it ... a kinda PlayStation and Netflix rolled into one service.
DAMMIT! I was hoping to actually play, natively, metal gear solid 4..but still a streaming title. Curse you, Poseidon!
@LtSarge Except Game pass Ultimate includes brand new, day 1 release games. Playstations service does not. Also Gamepass Ultimate allows games to be downloaded to PC.
Its either tier 1 or 3 depending on if the classic games have trophies or not.
@mariomaster96 so you're forgetting that you have access to over 400 playstation 4 and PlayStation 5 games, access to ps1, ps2, ps3 and psp games via streaming and download, plus online play and the usual monthly free ps plus games and PC steaming. Don't compare switch online to all that 😂😂
Questions: Does the extra tier include PS5 versions of the games or just ps4; does the essential tier include two new games per month or can they throw in games already available on the other tiers; how exactly will pricing works if I have a year left on my plus subscription but I want to upgrade to the other tiers; how often will new games be added to the extra tier
$120 per year for PS+ Premium? Think I'll just stay with standard honestly.
@__jamiie because ps3 games are only playable via streaming , this has always been a known thing.
@LtSarge
I think that PS Plus Premium is the better deal. I don't think it is too expensive. It is just $20 per year more than the Extra tier and you get access to all the PS1,PS2, and PSP games.
@Don no
The PS3 streaming only make this completely worthless to me, I have tried many of them on PS Now and between the input lag and vomit inducing visual noice I wouldn't play them there for free.
It’s not a game pass competitor then is it…at all. It’s just plus and now together.
Game pass is a good deal because games are put on there day 1.
Ffs 🙄
@mariomaster96
Did you forget to read about the 400+ PS4 and PS5 games included?
"Your subscription fee will not increase and your payment dates will not change when the new service launches, unless you choose to make any changes yourself to your subscription plan or payment frequency."
Just got this email from Sony - would this imply that there will be an upgrade path that doesn't screw people over?
@michaelf I'm the same as you, although I might just ignore the subscription entirely. Games are not too expensive as they are. I suppose the concept is to get more people paying less and therefore make more money. Microtransactions will probably be used more and more to maximize revenue, which is reasonable if people are paying less, but ruins the experience.
I would be quite happy if this model could push games to be shorter, because I'd be happy with a 40 hour game being a 20 hour game and a 20 hour game being a 10 hour game if they cost less.
Ultimately I think the main concept of subscriptions is to normalize a certain amount being taken out of your account every month without you noticing, so even if you barely use the service you probably won't cancel.
@get2sammyb could the 400 playstation 4 and PlayStation 5 games just be referencing the current playstation now games? Or will this be a new entire line up do you think?
@Juanalf
I dont care about the PS3 games either. Most of them have been remastered by now and I own all of them including Ni no Kuni, Mass Effect, Bioshock etc.
I'm a little confused.. aside from PS Plus and Now being merged into one, is anything of value actually being ADDED? Doesn't PS Now currently already have these capabilities or am I recalling this wrong?
@mariomaster96 it's rediclous isn't it? No way would I pay that much to rent legacy games
Thank you, @LiamCroft. The most unfortunate part is that Now has always been cheaper than Plus, so to think that Now is being given a premium reward and yet you get basically nothing more for Plus is a bit of a kick in the teeth.
It would have been good if they had gone with the Microsoft initial upgrade path (which I took full advantage of) whereby they converted Xbox Gold (essentially Plus) to either Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate. I paid the princely sum of £1 to join Game Pass Ultimate and had my Gold converted to 3 years membership of GPU. Unfortunately, I think we have seen in recent times, Sony aren't playing by the same standards and it's more of a case of loyalty be damned, make the peasants pay...
So I like this I do but I have one issue I am getting the top tier what ever but my worry is this promised PS one and 2 games they did promise that in the PS4 gen and we got some with trophies added but it faded to nothing as the gen went on
will this be like that or are they going to be adding games big time from those generations
As this is a massive launch effort, we’re rolling out the new PlayStation Plus offering in a phased regional approach. In the June timeframe, we’ll begin with an initial launch in several markets in Asia, followed by North America, Europe and the rest of the world where PlayStation Plus is offered.
Does that mean the UK will get this last? Or will everyone have it by June?
@Dalejrfanfreak "So they basically just combined PS Now with PS Plus and don't appear to be offering anything extra in terms of value such as Day-1 launch titles, plus it's more expensive than GamePass? I guess I'll continue to play third-party stuff on GamePass since it it cheaper...dang."
Yes, like the many psp/ps1/ps2 games that psnow and ps+ offered. Also, games like Returnal, Spider-man, MIles Morales (that still charts) that we're so used to getting by now.
I see zero difference with ps+ and psnow. I also may or may not need a new pair of glasses.
Does anyone know if the current PlayStation Plus Essential Collection will be moved to the extra tier? Or will it stay with the basic tier?
@huyi then it's not for you (or me), but definitely for others.
@huyi What about the 400+ PS4 and PS5 games included in it? Did you forget about those? You are paying only $20 more for legacy games.
@BolkaRover "It’s not a game pass competitor then is it…at all. It’s just plus and now together."
I keep reading comments like this and for the life of me, I just don't know if people struggle with reading comprehension or are just being overly negative.
@Gamakazil Poor Sony is taking a serious beating from MS. You're absolutely right. I mean other than facts, you're 100% correct.
@Dalejrfanfreak
Day 1 launch is not feasible and possible for Sony who create high quality GOTY candidate games each year. They cost a lot of money to make and you cannot make your money back just from a subscription. MS is losing tons of money on Gamepass, they are using money from other divisions to support their Day 1 releases on Gamepass. That is not sustainable business and Sony has been saying the same thing.
@OneWingedAngel
Problem there are not many recent a+ titles on gamepass either. Gamepass is loaded with B games and older games. If you like those games gamepass is great but a+ games that are recent there is not many but that said MS has a real dry spell. I really liked gamepass for a few months but no I do not touch it. I have D/L a few games when they get new ones just to delete most shortly after.
@OneWingedAngel I don't have a ps5 so that is inrelevant to me, and to rent PS4 games what is the point when I can pickup games I personally like in a sale anyways? And I get to keep them too 🤷♀️🤷♀️ ps plus basic is just the same thing but they just throw in garbage games for fun and they will expect you to upgrade to their premium service because of it
@UltimateOtaku91 @OneWingedAngel
I'll quote myself:
"I don't play online, own every PS4/PS5 game I'm interested in, my internet can't stream PS3 games good enough, I don't have interest in trials etc."
So yeah 120€ a year for old games is a pretty aweful deal for me, I'd love to be able to buy them seperatly (and that's also something that annoys me with Switch Online)
@shred5 and you have to wait to get the AA games at a decent price anyways, both Sony and Microsoft are not going to let you rent the major games on their subscription service, it's actually kind of sad because back in the day you could rent games to play and you can't get that anymore, or younger kids won't get that
@mariomaster96 sorry I thought you meant in general, for those who buy the newest releases day one then yeah this isn't for them
@mariomaster96 my internet connection is just as bad, even if I could afford the premium service I wouldn't be able to stream the games because of how bad my connection is anyways
Also you can get 3 momths of playstation now from this site for under £18, which converts to the highest new subscription in June saving you quite a bit of money
https://www.electronicfirst.com/playstation-now-uk-3-months/?c=GBP&gclid=Cj0KCQjw3IqSBhCoARIsAMBkTb138uCwJPTzoxqA7xd1S85-cLsdHU4pC1UQJeytAyNKemZ_l8CZieQaAus0EALw_wcB
@naruball well goodspeed to them I guess
@UltimateOtaku91 Np
Nah I just meant for people like me who are just interested in those legacy titles. I think for many others that deal might be pretty good
@NMeta sounds like it, and I expect the yearly subscriptions for PS Now to go away, resulting in a huge price hike for basically the same service.
@NMeta same happened when the ps4 was released, they scrapped the PlayStation 3 games and changed it to two playstation 4 games.
So I'd say they will change it to two playstation 5 games keeping the value
@Tharsman its not basically the same service though as its getting more playstation 4/5 games plus the extra two games a month, online play and cloud storage for an extra £4 per month if paying monthly.
@huyi
We had a family video and they rented games. They just went under during Covid.
@UltimateOtaku91 Its still a higher price if you only cared about the games but not the online (and those random games a month have been a [bleep]shot as of late.
If currently you subscribe to PSNow and dont care for PSPlus, this is a price hike (that includes anyone that subscribed for the streaming from PC or mobile without owning a console.)
If you have PSNow and PSPlus, then its a price cut.
I would have to see the list of these classic games, but struggle to think what they will be adding that isn't already somewhere else and its easy for MS to get licensing for, but if you subscribe yearly, the highest tier is cheaper than currently subscribing to both PSNow + PSPlus in yearly basis.
I for one only subscribe to PSPlus for the cloud saves. I cant remember the last time I even remember the last time I found a PSPlus game interesting to even claim, but for me, if PSPlus is going down in games, the chances of finding something I want to claim seem to also be going down.
@Tharsman oh yeah I mean if you have playstation now and honestly don't care about what the current playstation plus offers then yeah I agree it's steep price hike, but from last I checked playstation now's current subscriber count is awful so maybe sony took that into consideration, I mean losing a few million current subscribers to potentially gaining millions more is a risk they took
For both playstation and xbox I believe things like cloud storage and online play should be free anyway
@LtSarge I believe many gamers will happily pay just 3 more bucks to get access to a catalog of old games. But the Extra tier costs too much already…
@mariomaster96
An additional $60 a year for 400+ 1-year-old games and several classics is a bad deal?? Are you really that cheap? Buying your games is a good thing and I wholeheartedly support it but an additional $60 for hundreds of PS4/PS5 and legacy games is an amazing deal.
@huyi
Yes, of course, you can buy PS4 games you want but can you buy 400 games yourself? You may not have a PS5 but other do so it is a good deal for them. You cannot call it a bad deal just because you don't have a PS5. Try to look at it objectively and not based on your personal preferences or issues.
@OneWingedAngel Have you even read what I wrote? I already own the games I'm interessted in therefore even if I'd pay 100$ to get 400+ games I wouldn't play them since they don't interest me
I can't think of a single PS4/PS5 game that I don't own which I would even consider trying it out. I'm not a person who plays a game I'm not interested in just because I have access to it
Also what do you mean with "an additional $60"? Additional to what, I don't own PS+
@shred5
Agreed. One cannot expect to get all the latest and greatest for paying $120 for a whole year. I already subscribe to PS Plus so it is only $60 more per year and I get PS4 games that I may be interested in playing and several classics. I think it is a good deal for just an additional $60.
This looks like Plus, with Now broken into two pieces (streaming included or not) and added on for a lower additional cost, but not an option to have without Plus. MAYBE with some PS1 and PS2 games thrown in on the most expensive tier?
So if you liked Plus before, you'll like Essentials now. If you had both Plus and Now before, you'll save a little money now with Extra or Premium depending on what you play. If you hated Plus or Now, then you'll hate this this, too. Does that about sum it up?
There's little evidence so far that there will be big changes in what's offered with Now/Premium/Extra, though we'll know more this summer.
@mariomaster96
By additional, I meant if you already have PS Plus. Over 40 million PS gamers have an active PS Plus and I have had a subscription active for the past 7 years. I play online frequently so PS Plus is essential. For people like me, it is just an additional $60 for all the goodies. Anyway, now I see why you see it as expensive and pointless. You don't play online and don't subscribe to PS Plus so it is $120 for something you don't need. Fair enough.
@Kang81 I have to concede that ultimately the cell processor was not a huge success and has left a legacy of problems, like the difficulty of emulation . There's no denying facts.
But I appreciate companies that attempt to innovate and ultimately, sometimes when you take a risk it doesn't quite pay off.
Fortunately, I would contend that this did not stop Sony from wishing to innovate. Their design choices for the controller are a great example, they could have stayed safe, but they didn't.
They could have just used the Dolby Atmos 3D audio, but they wanted more sound sources than that handles, so we get the tempest engine, which can be quite extraordinary when used right (Returnal is good!) They recognise the future involves VR, so they invent and invest. They don't always make the best choices of course, and they need a more net savy communications team, but I'm glad they are still prepared to take the risk.
If the cost of innovation is the odd 'cell processor', then I'd contend its a price worth paying
@UltimateOtaku91 cloud storage should indeed be free. It’s free on Xbox. But let’s face it: the fact they know people like me only subscribe for that feature means they won’t make it free.
Not too bad. Nothing that wow's me, and yet it could become a decent product. We'll have to see how the library on the mid-tier shakes out. It's a little disappointing that streaming is only available on the top tier, since that makes streaming access to PS games more expensive rather than less expensive either for non-PS owners, or someone like me that likes streaming to a laptop sometimes away from the PS, which I sometimes used Now for. OTOH Now's library has always been kind of a mixed bag.
Does anyone know if these subscriptions will work with "game sharing" the way GPU does? I know Sony's usually tighter on such things, so I'm expecting no. That makes it a bit less valuable than GP for me.
@OneWingedAngel well yeah I legit have close to 300 games on PS4 anyways and I don't need a subscription to play them, are you still going to try and justify this horrible service? Yeah ps5 owners can take advantage of this service but at the same time would you be able to play all those ps4 games when they have the opportunity to play ps5 games? You are paying for a subscription to play legacy games but back in early 2000s you buy a PS2 and you could play PS1 games with it without paying a subscription, you can buy a original PS3 60gb model and play your original discs now times are changing, everything is subscription and like I said before you own nothing and supposed to be happy about that, I'm more than happy to own a PS2, PS3, psp and vita with more than 400 games but I wish the rest of the PlayStation fanbase will say no to this and put their foot down on greed, just like Rockstar recently introduced a subscription service to get extra boost for a game riddled with microtransactions, this practice is disgusting and exploitative!
Very interested in mid teir and possibly top. I'm very interested in what games are available at launch. Having the spiderman games, returnal, death stranding ect is a good start.
Tier two it is. Basically saves me from subscribing to both ps now and ps plus.. instead now I can just sub to ps plus extra minus the game streaming which I never do anyway. I hope they will refresh those ps plus extra games monthly, otherwise it's a bad deal to have just 400 games that will rotate ever so often. Especially since in 3 or 4 years I have subbed to ps now I already played most of the instant additions.
Will have to wait and see what older games they put on the service, PS1, PS2 and PS3. And also what are they planning to add in the future. PS Now has about 400 PS3 games available to stream already.
I love PlayStation first party titles and have owned all the home consoles. Just not sure when I'll jump into next gen and what console.
So, I currently have a PS5 and...
PS+ (to April 2023)
PS Now (to Nov 2022)
I'm aware that:
PS+ = Essentials
PS Now = Premium
I'm contemplating getting some store credit @ 15% off and then extending my PS Now by 12 months.
Good idea? I'm not entirely convinced! Obviously a personal choice, but I guess I add 'Premium' for less than half price for a one year extension, until Nov 2023, albeit potentially an overlap with my existing PS+ subscription that runs until April 2023.
All too confusing but, depending on what games get added, I think the refreshed service sounds pretty good...
Sony really need to make it clearer what the upgrade paths/costs will be.
@huyi
No, I will not defend it blindly. I will agree with you where I think you are right. You are correct that the classics were supported for free in previous generations and can be easily supported through BC on PS4/PS5 and that it is greedy of Sony trying to charge a subscription for it. I had many of those classics on PS3 but cannot play them anymore because of the lack of classics BC on PS4 and PS5. That is wrong and anti-consumer.
I am just saying that I along with 40 million PS gamers already subscribe to PS Plus. An additional $60 for over 400 PS4/PS5 games and PS1/PS2/PS3 games is not overpriced or too much money. If you don't want to support it out of principle then good for you but I do not agree that it is not a good deal or it is overpriced. It is just $60 more for a PS plus subscriber for hundreds of additional games to play for a whole year.
Crap that they're locking those classic games behind the most expensive subscription that's the only thing I'm interested in but not for what they're asking id rather just be able to purchase & keep the games I want 👎🏻
So for us with near a year left of PS Plus sub we get nothing for that money we spent
I also want to know how many PS One 2 and 3 and PSP games will be available they added some one PS4 and gave up after a while
Well, initial reaction to this will be I will be passing on it since PS3 games will still have to be streamed. I get that the Cell processor is complicated, but they still should have been able to come up with something so you could actually download the games. Being able to replay some of the PS3 games since I stupidly got rid of my system a while back was really the only draw for me, but I can't stream them. Otherwise I would have just subscribed to PS Now a long time ago.
I'll just keep my regular PS Plus tier subscription then. Including PSP games, some via download, is interesting, but not enough for me to spend a lot more money a year.
@thepaulcutts Microsoft also do that , even with their own 1st party games they only put the standard edition on gamepass
@OneWingedAngel I have Plus until Feb 23 and Now until Aug 22. I got PSN £100 credit off of allthekeys for £87 and renewed Now for 2 years. I also expect PlayStation to give me credit for my remaining Plus as you do not need two separate tiers. Now gives me Tier 3 which is the top and would no longer need the Plus Sub.
This is the information I want what happened to people that have Plus and Now
i'm surprised they didn't put their anime streaming service with this. i mean they own a lot so they could easily do this.
@KilloWertz why did you get rid of your ps3 , its the main reason why i keep mine around.
Will classic games be purchasable? I don’t want to sub to the premium tier just to play a few classic games I may not own.
Edit: was also hoping for a family plan.
@twitchtvpat At the time I wanted the money for trading it in towards the PS4. I also didn't think I'd have the urge to play many PS3 games anymore even though I kept several PS3 discs. Money was a bit tighter back then, but I still wish I had kept it.
Obviously I could just buy one off eBay from an actual reliable seller (it is possible if you really look at their feedback and if they show actual pictures of the console), but it would have been nice not to have to worry about that. Also since I don't have the discs for several games I would love to play/replay, being able to download a good portion of the PS3 library (at least the fairly large one that was on PS Now) would have been great for convenience and financially. There's no getting around how disappointing them not adding that option is for this announcement.
I won't be upgrading to the newer tiers anytime soon, need to see exactly what will be available selection and feature wise.
As soon as everything is revealed, then I will be making a decision.
@naruball so what is false about it? The USP of game pass is day 1 releases. PS plus doesn’t have that and now Jim Ryan is scrambling trying to explain why.
I don’t get your point at all
I'm seeing lots of people rage online about points that, from what I can tell, are not true.
Would appreciate someone correcting me if I'm wrong on any of this:
Yes/No. The monthly option is €3.00 more, but the annual option, which Game Pass does not offer (is that right?), works out cheaper.
It's not. It's just not.
It will include those games of course, as expected, but that's not all it will offer.
Nobody knows what the library will be.
This will have significantly more games than Game Pass (750?), it just won't have Day 1 releases... At least not for the near future.
Right?
Wrong?
@Dingo3784 you can buy 3 years of gold for 32 quid then convert them to GPU using the 1 pound a mouth offer. So you get 3 years gpu for about 40 pound.
@Shepherd_Tallon gamepass has well over a thousand
@Ken_Kaniff there is absolutely no chance in hell there will be trophy support for ps2 and ps1 games. Just like on Back compatibility xbox games don't have support only 360.
@Resi32 Oh wow, very nice.
Can you share a link? Everything I look up says there are only between 400 and 500 games, including backwards compatible titles.
I just looked up a list myself now and there were definitely less than 500 on it. I must be missing something.
I think Sony is just getting greedy and it is going to burn themselves with this half *** stuff.
PS5 no adaptive sync (free sync is well free), no Bluetooth audio (which even the switch has) this stuff should have been launch.
The whole 69.99 games.
Free upgrade to horizons oh wait no. ok yes.
Next Grand Turismo mess?
Now this with all the hype and waiting. How long did it take Sony to come up with this 10 seconds.
Sony is going to tick player off with money grabs. Tides can change fast in gaming industry.
These companies can sit here and push gamers around with some garbage like Roxio did with GTA trilogy.
I have no issues with companies wanting to make more money that is what they do but not to the point of ticking off the community. I also get not everyone is going to be happy. It is just starting to feel like Sony does not care about the gamer anymore and about Nickle and diming us to death.. Just remember without gamers there are no sales.
It will be interesting to see the 'real world' pricing. The RRP is more than GPU, and you also miss out on the brand new games, but you can also easily get GPU for WAAAAY less than RRP by doing the Gold update thing, which MS sort of promotes doing. It's like £3 a month for all that goodness.
@Shepherd_Tallon download the game pass app, there's easily a thousand games on the list
@Pditty1980 I'd rather the option to pay the additional to get bumped up to the top tier than that auto-happen and then I have to remember next year sometime to bump it back down again.
@Resi32 I wonder if it's regional. We're definitely not seeing 1000 games.
Players - 'We want to play games we already own on new systems, or buy games we didn't get to play in their time on new systems'
Sony - 'SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE BABY AND PS3 GAMES ARE STILL STREAM ONLY'
I'm glad emulation has come so far, you can play ps1/2 games for free with upscaled visuals and improved performance, even on a mediocre pc.
Also glad that I kept my PS3 around.
@Resi32 If thats the case then I'll stick with my vanilla Plus membership. I could careless about what else is on offer.
I'm fine with the tiers. It's the pay monthly prices that annoy me. People who can afford to pay for a year get a better deal than those who struggle to pay for a year so have to pay monthly but at a higher amount. Yes I know it's not just Sony who does this, in fact, it's the norm. But still!
I’m looking forward to browsing through the games. Hopefully with the option to buy most titles. I’m thinking NFS 2005. Metal gear 1/2/3. GR Jungle storm and others.
@Apfelschteiner
I'd honestly have to go log on my PS3 to find out just how many there are, but I do have a decent amount of PS3 and 360 games that I never finished but would like to.
@Titntin
Yeah, in that regard, I'd say it was a worthy trade. Thankfully Sony didn't end up making that horrible boomerang PS3 controller though. HA
As for the Dualsense, it could be my favorite controller ever, IF Sony does a few tweaks.
First, and it seems they have done so already if you get one of the newer colored controllers, which would be strengthening the springs in the haptic triggers. I already had the right trigger spring break within the first 6 months of use, and I barely used any pressure. At first I didn't even like the feature. I think I first used it extensively when Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart released and also in Deathloop. Now I don't know if the spring actually broke or just popped loose, but either way, I'm already worried about poor build quality of the Dualsense like the Dualshock 4. I have gone through about half a dozen Dualshock 4 controllers, yet still have all my original controllers for every other system I've ever owned and they all work flawlessly. Well, Joy-con aside. -_-
Second, fix stick drift. My second Dualsense that came with my console had stick drift right out of the box.
Third, release an elite version with back paddles, preferably 4 buttons. I never bothered buying expensive 3rd party "Pro" gamepads, but I did buy the back button attachment for the Dualshock 4. Once I became used to it, there really is no going back. I actually hated using my Dualsense when I first bought my PS5 because they lacked any back buttons.
@Rob_230 Dude, what Vita games would even be included?
If i had to really guess, at least 5 of these:
