Update: It wouldn't be a video game rumour without clarification, would it? Jeff Grubb has since taken to Twitter to expand upon his comments, explaining that he's also heard rumours that there'll be no Sony showcase until at least September:
This wouldn't be entirely out of the ordinary, as last year it hosted a livestream in September, as opposed to during the summer. He further explained on ResetEra: "I'm saying there are two competing sets of rumors circulating among people who sometimes know what is up."
Make of it all what you will.
Original Story: Here, who's up for a cheeky weekend rumour? We know that waiting for Sony to actually do something can be a painstaking process, especially when gossip like this is floating about, but these latest whispers are still worth pointing out.
This particular rumour originates from talkative (and reliable) games reporter Jeff Grubb, who, on the latest episode of GB Decides, says that Sony might have a showcase set for the first week of June. Grubb cites "multiple" sources, but can't outright confirm that an event is happening.
Take it all with a grain of salt, then — as always with stuff like this — but the timing of such a showcase would make sense. We know that Sony has the ammunition for a big event, and the summer is shaping up to be the opportune time for publishers to share their plans — especially with Summer Game Fest locked and loaded.
Do you think that there could be something to this? Would you be happy to hear about a Sony show in June? Start making some wild predictions in the comments section below.

How awesome would it be if we saw GOW Ragnarok and FF 16 drop during this next showcase? Sony has golden opportunity to dominate the rest of the year!
I don't know about anyone else but Jeff grub and reliable are not words I associate with each together.
Feels like they should have done this BEFORE they launch the new subscription service next week (Asia market). I'll always make time to look at some AAA gameplay trailers, but still.. don't they want my subscription money too?
OH MY GOD
Another rumor!!!
Love these!
@mrtennis1990
Honestly if it's just ff16 and gowr that's a bummer.
They will get destroyed by Xbox June's showcase. I'm expecting half of their studios to show something.
I can’t, not again.
I’m not strong enough.
I REALLY wish these insiders would shut the hell up when it comes to the whole "we MIGHT get a Sony event on _______" thing. At this point, it's extremely annoying.
Jeff "Sony is buying Square" Grubb?
He also heard that there wont be anything till September which sounds more likely lol
Now is the right time for Sony to take advantage of the delays of starfield and redfall to announce what's coming this year and make this year their's for the taking.
@RBMango Yep. Do it to drive clicks to their content, but gives them an easy out when it doesn't happen - oh plans changed, i only said it might happen etc.
I've seen both that rumour - and another saying a Sony acquisition has been completed - over the last 12 hours - but again, no details, no sources, no timeframe for announcement. Its very tiring
For what its worth i feel an event of some kind is coming soon, but only Sony will be able to tell us when - and in what format - it is
Wait until Xbox have their No release showcase.
Then bam hit them GOW this year 2022, the odd surprise and releases for 2023.
At least with Sony we normally get very good gameplay videos.
Your sub-headers always make me chuckle, lol
Edit: It was "Soony" before it got updated.
There will be no show.
@Oh_fiddlesticks I was thinking the same thing. Jeff Grubb is probably the least reliable source there is, outside of my uncle who works at Sony...
I wouldn't take anything he says as fact at all...
I like it when yall write articles on rumors. It atleast gives something to talk about nowadays with the relatively smug mute Sony we have to deal with. Since Jim Ryan took over excitement has been a drop in a bucket compared to what I felt on a yearly basis during the PS4 era.
Side note: I can't believe its a week or so before that new Plus service launches and they still haven't announced the games line up. Its like they don't care if people are excited or not. Its a completely different company from the past eras.
Something might happen one day or it might not.
Have I got the gist of the article?
Classic Grubb, says one thing then says another.
Maybe it’s time to stop reporting on rumors? I’m as hyped for the next showcase as any PlayStation fanboy but I can’t get excited until the next showcase info is officially announced. Hopefully we’ll get a state of play for GOW:R akin to last years Horizon FB soon. As for the next showcase got my fingers crossed for a teaser for a new Sly Cooper game!
When will Jeff Grubb’s word stop being considered “news?” It’s like reporting on Geekdom for Dragon Ball “news.”
The Horizon Forbidden West State of Play last year happened May 27th so it could very well be that both rumours are true with different meanings of showcase. A PSVR2, PS+, 3rd party or GoW Ragnarok State of Play the 1st week of June followed by a Playstation Showcase in September.
I could do Grubb's job:
There will be a State of Play in July. But it might not be in July. Also it might not be a State of Play.
I seriously need a good new multiplayer. Hope that tlou 2 factions is close. Ugh.
Give me dragon dogma 2 . sly cooper collection and resistance collection and i will be good.word up son
I'd love to see Sony rejoin "e3 week" with ms and Nintendo. It just hasn't been right without the big 3 in June...
@RevGaming
But how many are close to a release date?
That’s one of Microsoft’s key long lasting issues. No developer can get a game on time anymore, but Microsoft is one of the worst at it.
Even if it’s just FFXVI and Ragnarok, it’s highly likely that Ragnarok will drop this fall and FF will probably drop in the spring.
Ultimately both companies need to show us something tangible that has a chance of releasing by summer 2023. If it’s further out than that, just wait till the spring to showcase it.
@UltimateOtaku91
I mean it’s sort of Sony’s by default, since it’s extremely likely that Ragnarok will drop this year barring some unknown catastrophe.
@OrtadragoonX
How close are sony's to release?
Trust. If half of the studios have something to show, playstation fans will need to shut up for a while complaining about xbox 2023 and after it. I'm still skeptical of the quality and high end characteristics of these, but lets see.
FF16 is not even from Sony.
@RevGaming
I’m not a fanboy. I hope Microsoft has some good stuff to show because I’m looking at getting a Series S this holiday and I need lots of new content for Gamepass.
Primarily details on Perfect Dark.
@OrtadragoonX
I said fans hehe. I don't know you so I wouldn't jump to that.
I decided to move to Texas ( I am from Puerto rico). So I will get one after that.
No offense to Jeff Grubb, but why does anyone care (or write articles) about what he says? He's wrong more than right and has such bold predictions as "something could happen or it might not." I can make claims like that, too.
@RevGaming
Good choice. Texas is a beautiful state. Been there a pretty good bit for work over the years.
I live two states to the east of Texas.
@RevGaming Xbox isn’t on PlayStation level when come to exclusives Quality wise at least not right now.
@NEStalgia Agreed, ever since Sony took back the majority of the market and ditched E3. The way they make announcements now are so lack luster and boring compared to when you felt the excitement knowing it was getting closer to E3 and Sonys yearly press conference.
Nothing but rumors left and right...I'll just keep burning thru my massive gaming backlog (PS3 + PS4 + PS5/Switch/Wii U/Wii/Xbox) and wait for official updates from Sony, no matter how long it takes.
Yeah September seems much more likely...although i really wish they would deliver one during June like everyone else.
@OrtadragoonX
Yeah, it just made sense to me. There are some cons I will have to live with (animals and guns mostly), but I'll manage.
@Ken_Kaniff
Absolutely. I appreciate HQ wanting to control the narrative where possible but Jim Ryan comes across as a dinosaur and completely out of touch when it comes to communication in the 21st century. Revealing information through interviews with magazines when you have a plethora of social media platforms to share your message? I still love PlayStation but it feels so corporate and rigid these days under Ryan's leadership. I miss the feel-good vibes of the PS3-Vita-PS4 era.
@RevGaming
Lol man guns aren’t bad once you get around them. It’s the south, part of the charm of living down here. I’ve been shooting since I was ten years old. I carry almost every day.
But I get that not everyone is about them. Ain’t nothing wrong with that at all. My view on life is whatever floats one’s boat.
I don’t care for the AR dude bro fetish guys though. Don’t get me wrong, I like ARs (even though I’m far more partial to AKs myself, but I’m mostly just a revolver and shotgun guy; sold the one AK I had a few years back) but some of these guys go overboard with it and make us all look bad.
So no other playable Characters (Party), maybe guests ONLY. And no traditional summons, in the classic way...For Final Fantasy 16...If not it a pass for me..
@TheCollector316 Rumours are most prominent and people crowd around them the most when there's silence on the official news front. If you look at the big 3, Nintendo has the least rumours currently but they also have the most known lineup (Switch through September is pretty much known thanks to the February Direct and a few trailers in April).
Meanwhile there's a load more rumours around Sony and Microsoft given the only upcoming known stuff for 2022 is that GoW Ragnarok is currently on track for launching sometime in 2022 and there's a bunch of live service game updates inbound respectively (e.g. Halo Infinite's campaign getting mission replay in August).
Hopefully they announce some games are out this year because looking at the store there's absolutely nothing
@4kgk2 they don't need to be they have gamepass
SONY will have a show soon & a State of Play to & show new Exclusives to this year...GOD this is EASY being a insider
@Ryany
If you're talking PS5 consoles, you're correct. If you're talking games, you're dead wrong. GamePass can't make up for a lack of exclusives.
@Rural-Bandit defend him all you want... I have only heard his name thrown around over the last 2-3 years, and in that time I have heard him say 1 thing that was accurate.
It's always the same story with Jeff Grubb... "something might happen in the next few weeks"... 2 hours later... I know I said something might happen but also something might not happen.
@OrtadragoonX
Yeah. I think that's mostly it. A few make Texas look bad.
I hope our conversation doesn't get eliminated lol. We're off topic.
That reminds me of his friend insider (actually we should just call them all influencers because that’s what they are) claiming every month that something will happen next month. At some point they ll get it right no doubt.
I think SoP June and Future of gaming type in September but that could be in any order.
@Carl-G
I also predict Jim Ryan will tell stories about his goldfish and the internet will go down in flame as a consequence 👀👀👀
@torne
One of Jeff funniest take was ‘SmartShift is worrying’
But he has had a lot of those bad takes haha
Thing is the press instantly makes them seem legit as of an ‘insider’ as if that means anything nowadays. The truth is he makes cool headline clickbait.
@JJ2 that's exactly it, he makes clickbait and EVERY gaming site eats it up as if it's gospel.
Jeff Grubb has like 0.5% credibility, we honestly should stop listening to him
