Sony loves live service games. We’re yet to see the fruits of its labour, but apparently it has ten Fortnite-esque ongoing online multiplayer games in production – and it just spent billions buying Bungie and investing into Epic Games. Now the platform holder’s put its hand in its pocket once more, investing in software company AccelByte.
You probably won’t have heard of this firm unless you’re a game developer, but essentially the startup is responsible for building backend tools that can help power live service games, including the likes of Payday 2. It provides features like analytics, in-game monetisation, and more – it’s all about versatility and scaling to a particular product’s needs.
Needless to say this is a big deal if you’re making games, and it’s probably safe to assume Sony is using the technology for its upcoming titles. It’s one of three companies – alongside Galaxy Interactive and NetEase – who’s contributed to a $60 million investment into the organisation. Obviously this is chump change for firms like PlayStation, but it does help to reinforce where its focus is right now.
Unsurprisingly, AccelByte’s founder Junaili Lie previously worked for Epic Games, and his company’s goal is to provide AAA calibre tools to developers both big and small. With the number of live service games exploding, this will probably prove a shrewd investment from Sony, as it’s bound to make back its money as AccelByte inevitably grows – and it’ll no doubt get access to its tools to boot.

Ok they're legit starting to piss me off now
It's a little concerning that all we seem to be hearing from Sony nowadays is live service and subscriptions.
I swear, if it wasn’t for VR, the censorship and live service rubbish would have had me leaving Sony this gen.
@Keyblade-Dan why 😂
Hopefully Sony move away from single player games this generation as whilst they are good for a few hours they can't really compare to the 100s of hours live service games offer
@Grumblevolcano It's where the industry is going so not massively surprising. It's the same for all the major platform holders really (although they all have slightly different approaches to it.)
What is the hell is going on at Sony at the moment they seem hell bent on destroying all the goodwill they got last gen.
@Jacko11 Because live service games are a disease and not what pretty much all of PS' audience wants how many live service games need to bomb before companies realize they aren't wanted
@Keyblade-Dan I think you're overreacting. Those games aren't a disease and are probably the most popular games on PlayStation, regardless of your opinion.
Either way, investing ~$20 million into a promising software company won't stop The Last of Us 3 from getting made. This is just smart business if they see the company growing and also want to use their tools.
@Ryany
Said no one ever, without it's brilliant single player games Sony should just call it a day.
I know people have different opinions but dear god!
Unless it's supposed to be irony if it's not I would rather play a single player game for a handful of hours than 100s of hours of a boring and monotonous live service game with little variety , quantity rarely equals quality.
@Grumblevolcano I thought y'all kept saying competition was good?
I hope this blows up in Sony’s face. I hope it’s Hyperscape on repeat.
Well I'm dumping my money on other hobbies nowadays 😊
Gtfo Sony. You've seriously ruined 4 generations of hype for me. Besides Hogwarts, there's nothing else to look forward to. Maybe God of War.
The rest has become generic inoffensive mediocrity.
You know that episode where SpongeBob is rounded and lost his personality? That's what's happened to PS.
On a bright note, I love payday 2, so maybe this turns into something I can enjoy and not wish it would disappear.
Hate live service games
@BoldAndBrash 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I don't think its that big of a deal.
@Cutmastavictory There's an interesting blog post about how the PayDay 2 developer used this company's technology to pull data for its seasonal updates: https://accelbyte.io/client-stories/payday-2-customer-story/
@BoldAndBrash All of that may be true and is obviously your opinion which you're entitled to, but I don't think it's because they invested in a software firm that helps game developers pull analytics on their online games.
That’s it. I’m starting a game development company. I don’t have any games yet, but I have great ideas and I can post some job openings that will never be filled.
Now somebody buy me! $5 million. Cheap.
That screenshot of Kiryu presenting a briefcase full of cash puts a smile on my face every time I see it.😄
@get2sammyb thanks
Live service is not a bad thing as long as the vanilla game is very good and has good content to begin with i like having seasons in game
As long as they continue to deliver great single player AAA experiences, I'll keep gaming. I'm not a fan of the always online GaaS model. That said, I'm well aware I'm older and no longer the demographic for many videogames.
Seems like a sensible investment. Sony isn't going to walk away from its core audience, but it does want to open itself up to a broader consumer base. Why not both. If they are going to develop live service titles, they may as well be the best they can be
This comments section might contain the most overreactions in such a short space of time I’ve ever seen on the site.
With the way things are looking, I won’t be playing games by Sony next generation. I really like to play single player only and the idea of live gaming left right and centre really puts me off big time!
Boooo! Not good.
I'm a big fan of debating different opinions, but there are some massive overreactions here.
Everyone can relax.
PlayStation have said so many times that their single-player games aren't going anywhere. They know that's what draws people in to their ecosystem. They're just diversifying their portfolio and developing multiple income streams.
They can't mirror Game Pass, so they'll do this instead.
This changes nothing if you love games like God of War and Horizon.
I'm perfectly happy to give Sony the chance to develop a live service title that I can finally stick with. If anyone can do it I'm sure it will be them.
@suikoden Im more than 100 hours into AC Valhalla, and nowhere near to finish..
I too hate this path Sony is going.. its not because of the 20 million spent here.. its this, plus Bungie for 3 billion (for live service games), plus letting Eidos and CD pass for 300 million, plus the westernization of the company, plus the censorship..
But I still love you Playstation!
I honestly think this is where Sony fans (which I lump myself in with) either need to close their eyes and ignore news like this OR start accepting that Sony NEED to do this.
Sony is still the market leader, but as all these buy-outs are proving, it's a dog eat (smaller) dog world at the moment! They need to invest in technologies that will be used, format agnostic, to reap the benefits.
Different markets, but household names like Nokia, as an example, used to rule the roost... No more. And gaming wise, Atari... And Sega (to a degree).... Just mere footnotes of their previous dominance.
And I do agree, some 2+2=5 overeactions here.
Only when Sony stop delivering the single player love, will I depart from the platform.
As it stands, I think I agree with their strategy of broadening their developer base, and creating games in both the single player and live service space. You can have both... But time will tell....
God you can just see how trash Playstations library is going to be in the next 5 plus years. If your against these sleazy business practices that Jim Ryan is pushing for then show it with wallets. Don't touch these games when they release them. Make them go the way of the Dodo, lol.
Buy SquareEnix.. keep Final Fantasy XIV.. launch Final Fantasy XVII online.. Boom, live service games!
@suikoden said no one ever? I said it &it's the way things are going. Single player games will soon be a distant memory it's just not what people want
Change the title of this piece to 'people overreacting to news about sony'.
God there are some children commenting here
So much money waisted, sad.
if live service is done right, im all in, bungie does it badly, square enix and ff14 does it a lot better ; im not practically interested in online games , prefer single player j-rpgs
I hope this isn't 'the big news' we were supposed to be hearing about.
The downward spiral is progressing. By the next gen gaming won't be recognisable anymore.
Thank god for retro consoles, the best days are behind us. And that's where I'll be going one day.
@BigBirdy According to Satya Nadella, Xbox is the market leader
https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/microsoft-says-xbox-has-taken-market-share-globally-for-two-quarters-in-a-row/
@thefourfoldroot if Sony first party games don't do it for you, you might as well. See how lovely other companies are.
@Snake_V5, I think you're spinning this like an MS pro From that article, the sub header says:
“WE ARE THE MARKET LEADER THIS QUARTER AMONG THE NEXT-GEN CONSOLES”
Context being the words "This Quarter"
@BigBirdy 😈
Believe me I'm a massive PlayStation fan 😁
@Ashkorsair business as usual, really.
The more gaming becomes nothing but a continuous link to access your wallet in real-time and designed to require you dedicate your life to it, the more I start to wonder why I'm still engaged in gaming.
If there's one thing we've learned over the last couple of days is that most of the commenters have no business sense in the slightest.
Doesn't help that most of you treat Live service games as a genre. Live service is a business model, nothing more.
FIFA
Gran Turismo 7
Fortnite
Minecraft
and Final Fantasy 14 are all considered live service but non of those games are anything alike.
I’m holding off judgement until I hear what they’re up to.
Stoke the fire, fan the flames lol
I don’t mind if they invest in live service games - they’re the only platform regularly releasing amazing single-player games, so I think we can all cut them some slack there.
I do wish they had got the Tomb Raider deal though ☹️ Lara been done wrong.
@naruball
I know the relative strengths and weaknesses of all the platform holders given I’ve had all of their systems at one time or another. I’ve decided on Sony for my limited gaming time due to VR, doesn’t mean I have to be blind to their faults like some kind of fanboy.
@NEStalgia Because there are still thousands of good-to-amazing games that aren't designed like that?
@Rural-Bandit Oh it's not about digital vs physical. It's about purchasing content vs paying for each activity within content like an arcade machine.
Mario Kart doesn't charge you for repairs when you crash and have daily and hourly activities to schedule and keep up with. The future of live service, does. We bought consoles in the 80's because arcades were just too expensive and consoles brought the fun without the cost.
Live service promises to just move the coinbox into our living rooms.
@Ralizah ....for now
After all the completely avoidable screw-ups, nickel-and-diming, and ever-decreasing communication skills over the past few years, I don't think it's an overreaction at all to be annoyed and incredibly skeptical that Sony is chasing a trend that has further pushed the boat out on awful business practices and insane money gouging. I don't trust modern PlayStation at all with this kind of business strategy.
Developments like these make me sick to my stomach.
...Oh god. These things just keep piling up, don't they?
How can people say live service games suck, when Fortnite is soooo good? I don’t understand the hate?
Honestly gone off the idea of buying a ps5 now because all their decisions lately just make it look like the future for playstation is something I'm not interested in
No thanks. Don't need a live service. Just a good gameplay and story experience. If the gameplay is good, it'll probably be good for multiplayer.
@BigBirdy epic & Fortnite , rockstar & GTA online , Activision & warzone once these companies get their live service game that takes off & is a constant stream of cash single player games become the bottom of their priorities
@BoldAndBrash I'm not sure how you can call them inoffensive when they get folks like you in such a tizzy? They're appealing to a broader set of tastes that they used to, and it's not like you can't still find plenty of games made with 16-25yo edgelords as their target demographic.
Y’all weird about single player games. Just enjoy your hobby and I’ll enjoy mine.
Gaas is a good idea, technically. Make a great game, add to it consistently. Apex, warframe, destiny, lol, dota, etc, are great examples. The main point, in a lot of gaas' is the f2p aspect. If Sony sells a game at the full $70 price, don't expect a lot of people to buy AND add more. And if it's garbage, don't bother. Anthem, godfall, babylons fall, avengers are great examples.
Makes me wonder if any of the "ten forknife-esque games" will be of existing ps-exclusives. A bloodborne gaas with a elden ring-like open world. Is this why we haven't seen a factions game? They're turning it into a gaas?
They need to get rid of these idiots currently in charge of the American branch.
@Keyblade-Dan Guy. Sony made 2.1 billion in 2021 from live service elements (included micro transactions) and DLC. Who is to say that the PS audience doesn’t want more.
I have platinum’d almost all of their AAA single player games and I love them. But my top 3 PS titles in history with regards to hours played are Apex > Destiny 2 > FFXIV.
So I don’t mind this at all.
@theheadofabroom
Because the alternative is... Games made with 16-25yo edgelords as their target demographic...
Ah yeah. The either or mentality. Or the "you're either with me or you're Satan's spawn" mentality.
Or the "I'll quit my gaming hobby and thus be committing crime on the streets yo" mentality.
You're putting words into people's mouths to feed your argument. The games don't have go be edgelord games. They can have a bit more spice to them. Seeing that you have a GTA SA logo, you would enjoy it as well. I don't see what the problem is
I seriously don't see people's issue with service games, especially if they have a single-player experience or a more traditional experience along with all the service stuff.
Genshin is a great example of a live service done really well. Very quality stuff. I've sunk over 1000 hours into it, and about half of that is VERY story centric.
Hell, GoT Legends, while really barebones by service game standards, is another good example. It had an actual single player.... I feel like this is a case of "Old Man Yells at Cloud" for a lot of posters here. It's not a huge deal, and it could mean a TON of new jobs, lots of new quality content, and a lot of bang for your buck.
As long as it isn't the EA or Ubisoft way of live service it'll be fine... Hell! Even ABK's way of doing things is decent.
As some have said I don't get the harsh reaction over live service games. Maybe it's because a lot of people do not like fortnite and associate live service games with that. But GTA V, ESO, and even No Man's Sky all have dedicated followings and are good games. I recently got sucked into ESO and there's literally hundreds of hours of content that comes with the base game. I like how No Man's Sky doesn't charge for anything and just keeps releasing content. That's live service done right.
Every successful GAAS game has been f2p… it’s going to be really interesting to see how Sony push theirs. Will they be charging £70 for a live service multiplayer focused Last of us? Place it behind one of their subscription paywalls? Or release it free to play?…never an obvious answer with Sony this gen.
And how much of an uproar is Sony making existing ip GAAS going to realistically be? So you don’t get another killzone sp campaign but get a live service mp focused one…how many really care?
So many already bat for Sony when they raise the price of games, charge for ‘upgrade patches’, patch in microtransactions… who’s going to really care if they’re investing billions in GAAS games? These people aren’t going to care…and they shout the loudest. The rest just play FIFA and cod.
I think there’s a reaction to this because that money could be going into yet more cinematic story driven 3rd person sp games. Those are why WE buy the console. Or maybe most would have the money be spent on ensuring games don’t come out on Xbox. But obviously the real money right now is in service games…microtransactions. Sony clearly know this and pushing for it…how they handle it we’ll see. Certainly don’t make sense slapping a £70 on these games though when you want more people playing them the better.
You lost me at “in-game monetisation”
I game less and less these days and it’s because of stuff like this. Sony are going in a direction that’s so far from why I game. That’s why I’ve been playing more indie games than anything lately. They are usually way more creative and fun…to me at least.
@Gbarsotini That last part is so true it hurts. They've become more western to the point where they've shut down their own Japanese studio. I hate the Jim Ryan and Herman Hulst era.
@Ryany didn't know Electronic Arts had a burner account on this site 🤔
On the real though they're just trying to make money here, when half a dozen of their live service games 'fail' they'll still get one that runs way past the break even point of all of em that'll warrant it all. I hate live service games as much as anyone else, but most of the people here are acting like they've not actually played and liked any lol
I wonder if playing and enjoying a good single player game will be seen by the new generations of gamers the same way we see our parents and grandparents enjoying reading a book. That thought made me a bit sad.
No interest in live service gaming period, but I won't hate on anyone who enjoys it. More power to them.
As long as Sony/PlayStation commits to still also making strong story based single player games, I'll be happy.
@Cherip-the-Ripper they don't pal its my own opinion
I like how Nintendo has done things with splatoon 2 and tetris 99 but I hate narrow event windows where I either play the game content during a set couple weeks or never get to.
Playstation has fans like me who love Single Player & like it or not fans who love games like Fortnite & COD Online, being mad that they are trying to have something for both sets of players! is immature! Sony has not shown anything to hint Single Player games will be left behind? & all they have done & continue to do deserves a bit more respect.
I only play single player games, so yeah, this news is not welcome. Seems extreme!
@BoldAndBrash Just because nothing exciting has been announced, it doesn't mean there is nothing exciting coming.
@BigBirdy The other bit of context is that they didn't outsell Switch.
@Rural-Bandit It really is subjective whether people should get two different consoles. I have no need for another console. It would just be a waste of money and adding to an already long backlog. I could imagine my kids getting a Switch. There is absolutely no reason why we'd ever need/want an Xbox.
@Would_you_kindly You should just play the games that interest you and not worry about what the mainstream are playing.
@sonicmeerkat Those kinds of events are disrespectful to people with lives. There really is no reason to do that apart from manipulating people to play on the terms of the company.
I get that a lot of people only want to see single player games but live service is a big part of the industry and Sony needs to keep pace. Personally, I'm a single.player gamer but after watching my youngest play 2000 hours of Fortnite through lockdown its clear how important these can be. Even without being a player, I looked forward to the Fortnite events at the end of every season. It's a fantastic product. Sony is still making its trademark single player experience's. It's not a one of the other situation, it's just the modern gaming business.
Absolutely hate these service type games. Just give me good single player experiences.
I have 4 kids
3 are clever
1 is stupid
The stupid one plays live service. Well done on your D for English who dud u GT dat from? Me r ya ma?
@get2sammyb The concern is about lack of balance. Don't get me wrong, a State of Play or Playstation Showcase could appear in the near future and fill the single player info drought but from the past 2 months you could easily get the feeling Sony cares a lot more about live service than single player nowadays.
@BoldAndBrash my avatar isn't any logo, it's a cartoonised photo of my face while wearing a cloth mask. I enjoyed the GTA games back when I was a teenager (SA came out when I was 16/17 and I loved it), but honestly they're just kinda annoying now that I've grown up a bit. My point was exactly that it's not either/or. There are plenty of companies out there still making stuff that's low-brow and deliberately offensive which appeal to the GTA crowd, and it's great that Sony are making sure that other gamers are covered too.
It's pure naivety to believe this GaaS initiative won't impact Sony's single player releases. We're either going to see a drop in quality or quantity of their single player games, so pick your poison.
There's at least 10 GaaS games in development from 1st party studios, that's resources already being divided between GaaS and single player games and we already know that GaaS is seen as the priority now. This means the single player releases will either continue to be short experiences (Miles Morales, Rift Apart) or cross-gen compromised (Forbidden West, GT7), neither of which have justified the £70 asking price to me. I've yet to see a truly outstanding release; Demon's Souls comes close but it's just a new coat of paint on an old PS3 game.
@Machines You're the minority
@Apfelschteiner this will directly effect the games I'm interested in as they'll be putting in more time & resources on live service stuff the the traditional good single player games look at rockstar with GTA online , epic went from gears of war to Fortshite , bungie has their 1 live service IP , Activision call of duty , it's naive to think Sony won't put all their effort into these live service games once they start getting the cash that they can make
@Apfelschteiner Microsoft ruined halo probably their biggest IP in the pursuit of live service & monetization
@Would_you_kindly Might as well ride til the wheels fall off!
It really bothered me that Sony ditched Japan Studio, but I love my PS5, but I'm basically just playing upgraded versions of PS4 games.
@marty8370 old school
@LiamCroft If you see, how company that you gave some money flush these money down the toilet, you must expect overreactions... I personally am really letdown by PS5 overall. Put aside chaotic interface, there are 2-3? pure PS5 AAA singleplayer games in 2 years... and it looks it won't change anytime soon.
I think we all forget the times they are a changing. Just like halo and cod caused a up fire of shooters to be made because they was pulling down so much money that's faded and just like every console had a platformer with their very on mascot that's faded all except in Nintendo of course and now Fortnite has set a new standard because people throw money at it via season pass and buying skins. I think alot of people forget these businesses like Sony and Microsoft they don't care about you or even what you like hell they don't even care about gaming. If gaming dident make them money they would have moved on to somthing else. All they care about is your money and what's going to get them as much of as fast as possible that's it. That's what speaks to them and that's how your vote is casted via your wallet.. As far as offline first party games goes sonys got the best in my opinion but if your not happy or you don't feel the platform is moving in the same direction that fits you by all means it's your dollar do what makes you have theirs pc Xbox and Nintendo. Keep mind every time you bought a destiny expansion back or season pass and the same with fortnite you voted by buying what you liked
Way to not read the room sony. Live service games generally suck.
@get2sammyb Everybody does is ever has been a good reason for me. But there are so many great games if it gets to bad i will just skip ps5 and buy al my games cheap for ps4 the library is big enough to keep me gaming untill the end. 🤪
