The new PS Plus tiers, Extra and Premium, have just launched in Europe and Australia, meaning that the overhauled service is now live worldwide. With this in mind, Sony seems to have finally kicked its advertising campaign into gear. It's released a two minute, cinematic ad that asks 'Why be one thing, when you can be anything?' It's absolutely stuffed with details that reference all kinds of PlayStation titles.
It's the kind of video that people are going to be picking apart in order to identify everything, but the point that Sony's obviously trying to make is that the new PS Plus offers a huge library of games. You can check out our All PS Plus Games guide for a full list of everything that's available, in all regions.
Are you signed up for the new PS Plus? Point out how many games you spotted in the comments section below.

There were some rather subtle hints apart from the obvious ones but that weapon rack in one shot has probably a ton of references. One of the swords looks like the one from SotC. The firearms probably hint at various games as well.
Best form of advertisement is to show the games
I do enjoy these random playstation adds. This was one of the best ones they did with zero gameplay shown...

I really want that ring now
@render I had forgotten about that ad. Gave me a chuckle.
This is my favourite PlayStation advert. Still gives me chills: https://youtu.be/Rms31nsx6oI
I love ads like this. I caught many game references plus things like a case full of trophies and photos showing gaming in general.
Nothing will beat the Kevin Butler "It only does everything" ads, though.
@Shepherd_Tallon
That ad is really dang good!
@render
I've never seen that one before. That is so funny!
These commercials are so cool. Immediately makes me want to fire up my playstation
I just saw that commercial on my Samsung 4k tv roku you tube.its a amazing commercial.cinematic and wonderful.word up son
I love it when Sony does this kind of thing. Great ad.
Yeah idk, commercials like these that seem to obfuscate what exactly they are pitching are strange to me but then what do I know, I generally skip or avoid any and all ads I can, whenever possible because I just generally dislike advertising.
Really good add. Love it.
Awesome advertisement. Finally getting some great marketing going for their new service. Sony must have been reading the Push Square article comments. 😄
That took a weird ass turn but loved it.
PlayStation always have solid live action ads.
Gotta love wacky PlayStation ads! This one hits the spot.
Now imagine if the service was packed with games!!
I'm joking, of course! Cool ad!
Would be good if they re-ran that awesome Syhpon Filter advert to celebrate it coming to Plus.

Just saw the saw cleaver lol Sony really be teasing us by acknowledging Bloodborne and yet still won't announce a remaster lol
@Shepherd_Tallon That one is awesome too, so many great references!
@TheCollector316 Yeah makes me laugh even now
@render AHAHAHA! Love it. Never seen that Last Guardian trailer. Thanks for the share. They've done so many good ones over the years.
I always liked For Michael & PS Vita - The World is in Play
It is very helpful that Sony has movie studios under its belt. It does have some of the best commercials.
@themightyant Damn I want a PS Vita now 🤣
In accordance with all the planned live service games Sony are producing, I think an ad with a snotty-faced brat yelling that he's gonna **** your momma would be more representative of the expected PS5 gaming experience.
@render If it makes you feel any better the ad campaign was probably better than the Vita's catalogue? Sony put that one out to die. Which is a shame because even to this day it's a brilliant bit of hardware.
@themightyant It really is a shame that, considering the Switch has done so well for Nintendo. It likely just needed a bit more support and it would have been the success they wanted it to be.
@render that's bril, never seen it before 😂
That's a fun commercial. They really haven't done this sort of thing for a while. Maybe Jim didn't get rid of everyone that knows what PS makes.
@zupertramp This one's pretty straight forward: They're pitching adventure/exploration/memories/revisiting the past in a comforting way.
Instead of advertising this month's games they're advertising the emotional concept of a game rental service and all the experiences at your fingertips, in a very detached way. You don't actually learn what you get from the sub, you learn how the sub could make you feel, through images of someone else experiencing it, by doing something completely different.
The ones that really confuse me are their broader platform ads. The ships falling off the edge of the world, the old PS2 ads with the dystopian city, the freaking chess players. Those are so avant garde I would never know it's an ad for a game console, and even when it tells me it's for PS, I still don't feel anything from PS. At least the ships convey a sense of grand adventure to extraordinary places. The dystopian city and chess players make me want to buy a Dreamcast instead...
Bored at work so ..
Helmets from Returnal and Demons Souls?
Butterflies - Ghost of Tsushima?
Weird fish and flowers: Don't know but feel a bit Horizony
Trophies: Gran Turismo, sports games?
Fridge photos: Red Dead 2, NBA 2K, Ghost of Tsushima, Returnal
Basement: Death Stranding BB, Bloodborne blade, HZD watcher, Firefly pendants from LOU, underwater mine from Uncharted? , Weapons cabinet could be various games but includes a GoT sword and guns from e.g. Days Gone and Last of Us, Death Stranding mask, GoT mask.
Think I glimpsed some armour too, maybe Kratos.
And the monster behind the door... Could be the creatures from the caves in Uncharted or a Days Gone freaker?
Nathan Drake's coin.
Didn't recognise the alien bones or the thing swimming in blood.
@stu123 I don't recognise it from any game but it feels a bit like it could be in Detroit Become Human
@Barryburton97 The framed butterflies reminded me a whole lot of that one room in the first Resident Evil.
@dschons ah yes are you thinking of the room with the fishing lures (in the RE1 remake)?
The fish tank is definitely Detroit. The alien bones are Resistance I'm pretty sure. No inFamous that I saw is just depressing though.
None of the classic PS games at all? Gravity Rush and Knack I can understand (very disappointed though), but no Jak, SotC, TLG, Ico, Ape Escape...nothing? Strange. I mean, I know Sony's "moved on" to care only about young, mainstream, American/British action gamers that started gaming last gen...but....they're advertising their retro service here for crying out loud.... You'd think they'd give a nod to their classic games in a commercial for the sub, since they're part of the product the commercial is selling. Like...the most expensive tier is entirely about that stuff. Kind of a miss there.
As a PS Plus Extra commercial it's an A+. As a PS Plus Premium commercial it's kind of an F.
@NEStalgia yeah I got the sense it's one of these "selling a feeling" type ads but idk, even in that regard it came across rather lackluster. Maybe I didn't get enough of the references (which then makes me question if this is for hardcores or casuals).
But again, it's gonna be hard for me in just about any context to give praise to an industry dedicated to trying to manipulate our lizard brains for profits. Not to be that guy but advertising (on this level at least) is just kinda gross.
@zupertramp I'm not marketing guru, but my guess is the target audience is lapsed hardcore gamers from last gen, or new gamers that are aware of last gen's games but missed them.
Which...to be honest is a weird target market. It's a commercial selling a feeling, based on nostalgia of the PS4 generation (and very, very little from prior to that, except maybe Resistance), using references that if you're not a core gamer you don't even get, and even if you are a core gamer, it's easy not to get. While most of their customers are already in the PS4 gen.
It could be targeting PS4 customers who really just played GTA/COD/FIFA but are aware of the other games and is enticing them with a buffet.
But yeah, you're right, it's kind of a commercial to preach to the choir. Maybe drum up social hype. But doesn't really do much to move a totally unaware/unengaged potential customer.
I genuinelly smiled when I noticed the Saw Cleaver from Bloodborne. One of the best Playstation games ever and the amount of love it gets even 7 years later will never be enough.
Great ad.
What a BRILLIANT Advert
I think we might see a new Super Mario Bros. game at the next PlayStation event. The guy was wearing a hat and Mario liked to wear hats too.
@Shepherd_Tallon @render Both of those ads were entertaining, thanks for sharing!
