IGN First has the latest scoop on Sonic Frontiers, with the new video covering the game's combat out in the open world. You can see it for yourself above.
Sonic looks to have a few moves at his disposal, including swift kicks and punches as he tackles some quite strange enemies. We can't quite tell as the UI has been disabled, but we'd wager you'll charge up some of the hedgehog's more powerful abilities, like that swirling spin kick.
Bearing in mind the game is unfinished, it's not looking particularly promising at this juncture. We do like how running rings around enemies will affect them, and the fight against the giant robot is something of a spectacle, but like the traversal gameplay, it all just looks very rough around the edges. The jerky camera movements, repetitive attacks and sounds — we really want Frontiers to be good, but these videos aren't instilling much confidence right now.
Anyway, what do you make of it? Discuss in the comments section below.

This whole game has massive tech demo vibes. Could probably do with a delay...or two.
This does not look like a fun game
Spin dash in the future as skill tree
I'm really looking forward to playing Sonic Origins 😉
Needs more time in the oven but at least theres some effort on show here
Another game delay incoming….
Oh boy... Sega should do a little scouting to bring some outside perspectives for Sonic, because this looks bland.
Some of the attacks are quite cool, but personally I still find the combat animations pretty stiff to say the least.
And that game was originally planned to release in 2021...
I like the idea of them trying something new. Love the 2D games and some 3D games. But open world, it will be interesting to see how it is when it's finished. But that's the second video now that hasn't impressed me. The fight doesn't look exciting and in the last video he didn't seem to be running fast enough for such a big open world.
Those environments and animations look absolutely amateur. Why are the characters and the environment two totally different art styles? I'd say they should go back to the drawing board with those clashing graphics but it honestly doesn't feel planned at all. Sonic can and has pulled off gorgeous looking levels before (Unleashed and Generations STILL look good because of their unique stylised look). That Breath of the Wild ripoff soundtrack is stale too.
I was really hoping after 2 great movies they'd get their act together for the games from now on, it's really disappointing that Sega just keeps finding new lows for the series.
I actually liked the exploration focused video quite a bit. This combat focused one however is a different story. The main issue I see is just that enemies simply have too much health and so the fights look like they take way too long to finish. Also there isn't enough impact when Sonic hits enemies.
There is potential here. I like what Sega seems to be going for but it might need some more time in the oven.
I'll be patient.
I like the part where the camera zoomed out so far that you couldn't see what was going on. For a moment you might think you're not playing yet another terrible 3D Sonic.
With the technology available, I would love to see a new sonic game set on Sonics homeworld of Mobius. That could look spectacular. This demo didn’t really have the breakneck speeds that I would personally associate with Sonic. In all honesty, I think it looked terrible..
This makes me sad...
I really don't want to be down on this game, and a lot can change between now and release.
But....... damn Sega. You're making it real hard to be optimistic right now.
I’m not really liking what I see at the moment. Sonic was about speed. The environments and enemies were often colorful and vibrant. Older sonic games were just cool… Theres nothing here that makes it feel like a sonic game. It’s just sonic in a 3D world that he doesn’t seem to belong in. It just isn’t working for me, maybe getting to play it will change my mind. As a huge Sega fan, I’m not looking forward to this one.
Honestly, it's just sad and a bit embarrassing. I really want this to be awesome as well, but what they're showing is horrific.
Definitely an example of "not every game needs to be an open world"
I didn't think the combat mechanically looked bad. Definitely unpolished, with jarring animations and camera shifts. But that's definitely fixable before release.
My big question is why do enemies take so much damage? This is Sonic — he's about speed. Why does he take 2 minutes to beat a single robot? That'll just make combat a slog; I'm sure the typical player would just avoid it after a couple hours. And I like how the enemies are gimmicky and take specific moves to beat. But why would they think doing that specific move 3 times in a row is interesting gameplay?
It looks like they threw Sonic in DeathStranding and replaced BTs with high hp robots.
The structures floating in the air are just plain wrong as well.
What worries me though, is why would you send out video demos of a game that is so obviously a work-in-progress, unless you were happy with them?!?
It looks like they are confident in what they are showing, they will be disappointed when this releases.
The last few gameplay videos they have shown are getting quite a lot of hate, wouldn't be surprised if this now gets a delay into 2023
I’m getting heavy Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis vibes from this.
@ShogunRok The sad part is SEGA admitted it was delayed from 2021 already before reveal because they wanted to make a good game.
That implies that when it was still internally aimed at 2021....it wasn't a good game, and this is better than that.
Sonic team isn’t an AAA studio and hasn’t been in years , i don’t even know if sega is AAA , but i knew from the first reveal that this is just a tech demo , at least i think it is . i never saw these reveals as a beta or the official game .
still love the graphics
I'm honestly way more concerned that they haven't shown us anything story/plot wise so far...
Hopefully the next trailer will focus on purely just that, would be nice.
Ok. Well, this wasn't the worst part of the game. It looks acceptable.
I would like to see how combat would look with different characters. Their unique powers would lend a different dimension to the exploration as well.
At least shadow or mighty shouldn't be too hard to make. They have minor differences.
Performance issues are most concerning though.
Between performance and appearance I'd say this needs quite some work before it's worth the full price tag. It wouldn't be a Sonic game without some jank though, so I'll set my expectations accordingly.
There's a good foundation here, but the floors haven't been installed yet...
@MrSensical I'm betting Mario Odyssey New Donk city was their inspiration for the clashing style. I'm not saying it works here, not that's probably what they're copying.
I'm sorry diehard Sonic fans, but this looks horrid.
Man...they just can't get it right huh. Not sure what focus testing or scoping amounted to but i don't think it should have been that direction, for one the art style doesn't suit it. Breath of the wild or Mario Odyssey art style would have been good for it and filled up the world with plenty of enemies items etc. The one thing imo they got right was the sense of speed transitioning that with the right look and sense of design direction would've been on the money
Why even bother making this game
I actually thought it looked good I'm looking forward to it.
This video has "Gameplay video leaks for cancelled 2013 Sonic reboot" vibes.
Sonic unleashed had good combat in wolf mode, this aint it
I am sure anyone can do this with a bit of training in Unreal Engine 5. Embarassing honestly lol
