A remastered collection of PS1 and PS2 classics Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 was planned by Vicarious Visions, until the studio merged with Activision Blizzard. That's according to the legendary skateboarder himself, who revealed the news during a Twitch livestream yesterday.
He said the plan was to remaster the third and fourth entries even up until the release day of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 on PS4. Once the developer was absorbed by the Overwatch and Diablo developer, Activision did take pitches from external studios, but reportedly wasn't satisfied with any of them. Vicarious Visions has since aided in the development of Diablo 2: Resurrected.
Talking on the livestream, Tony Hawk said: "That was the plan, even up until the release day of [1 and 2], we were going 3 and 4. And then Vicarious got kinda absorbed and then they were looking for other developers and then it was over."
Hawk added Activision "didn't really trust anyone the way they did Vicarious" to remaster the third and fourth titles. "So they took other pitches from other studios, like 'what would you do with the THPS title?' and they didn't like anything they heard. And then that was it."
In May 2021, a drummer from the band CKY said they were working on a new Tony Hawk title, which was presumably this project as the group's music is part of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 soundtrack. "I believe we're doing the new one coming out too," Jess Margera said at the time. That work will never see the light of day not, it seems. Fast forward to today and Vicarious Visions is "fully dedicated to existing Blizzard games and initiatives" like Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2.

While THPS was a huge part of my childhood, since the Skate series came around with a more "realistic" approach to skating, THPS was dead to me. That said, the franchise is absolutely iconic and the remake was a huge success. Bummer this happened.
Gutted, still hopeful it can be resurrected. Loved the 1st remake and 3 is awesome!
This sucks so much. Ever since that original THPS1+2 remaster, I've wanted a 3+4 remaster so badly as well.
Xbox really needs to undo everything that ActiBlizz did to Vicarious Visions, once that acquisition is complete. A shame that it will likely never happen though.
Absolutely gutted to hear this news. I think I knew all along this was the case but to hear it come straight from the Hawk’s mouth just saddens me. The remakes are fantastic and probably my proudest platinum. Personally, I think 3+4 would of been the better game out of the two, just a shame we’ll probably never see the love they deserve like 1+2 got 😔
That’s a shame because THPS3 was my jam. I think I have the soundtrack burned into my memory forever with how much I played that game.
Really terrible of them to do this to a great studio like VV. These would have been guaranteed to be good, 1+2 proved that. I don’t get the thought process.
Said this would happen the moment VV got absorbed. Absolute tragedy.
Somehow reassuring that they are not just doing them for the sake of it though.
Not enough Microtransactions can be squeezed into it and no live service elements so onto the scrap heap.
That’s the element of the pitches they didn’t like. Can we milk 100s on top of the 50 quid we will charge?
We can’t boss.
GET OUT!
The craziest thing is, with the MS buyout of Activision, there is now a tiny ray of hope of the 3-4 Remasters happening compared to before when it was clearly hopeless.
Any hope at all is good in this case, I detest how Activision just gobbled up developers for the Call of Duty factory.
THPS4 was one of the first 3 games my brothers and I got with our PS2 (along with GTA Vice City and Kingdom Hearts). The soundtrack alone is stamped into my mind.
@kyleforrester87 Well they would have most likely not been 3 and 4 in the same package anyway since 3 is the same format as 1 and 2 while 4 is a free roamer. So it would have been a more interesting endeavour for the staff than one would first think. Given VV’s fate though, I’m fairly sure most people would rather they became a one-series studio making skating games rather than be absorbed into the bum-curdling crapshoot that is Blizzard.
Bummer. THPS1+2 was so well done, I was really hoping to see at least one more.
@pip_muzz you’d think these would be a perfect fit for GPU but again most first party GPU games have dlc or a service element to get more money in. I hope they do make them.
@nessisonett politics aside, I just love Diablo too much. Diablo 4 looks awesome. I can’t help it. I’m glad VV have been tasked to make it even better. Tony Hawks remakes were great but the novelty wore off on me after a few hours.
Unfortunately they likely wouldn't come to PlayStation anyway. As single player games they'd likely end up GamePass exclusives after the buyout is complete. I'd expect multiplayer MTX filled games only on PlayStation in the future.
Phil said some games will still come. I'm certain that's exactly what his vague comments will mean.
This was just tragic. THPS4 was my favorite as a kid and I would have loved to see how it held up. And what did we get for all the trouble? Diablo 2 Remastered. A game that is at least easily accessible on PC already whereas the Tony Hawk games are pretty difficult to access today.
Truly sad what happened with VV. "You've done a great job breathing new life into some our legacy content! Good job! Now merge with Blizzard and go away." -some Activision exec.
@GADG3Tx87 They'd have made it to PS5 at £60 a go. That's the thing, it actually makes Game Pass look even better if they bring the games over to PlayStation at that kind of price.
@kyleforrester87
I've said before that selling them on PS at £60-70 a go would still get them money from the other platform while still making GamePass look like a cheaper attractive option for those who don't want an Xbox.
But given he eventually clarified that Elder Scrolls and Fallout will release "only where GamePass exists'" I would think that to be the case for all attained single player games going forward. Which upsets me because Activision (AFAIK) now owns Spyro, one of my favourites.
If I was in Phil's position I would sell them to other platforms at full price. It's a win-win either way for him/Microsoft. But I just don't see it happening as he wants everyone on GamePass and Sony will never in a million years allow a competing service on PlayStation, especially now they have their own.
FFS. I was really hoping for THPS3 to have the same treatment. It's one of my favourite games of all time. **** you Activision and Blizzard and whoever else is responsible for coming up with this.
Don’t worry guys, they’ll make a GaaS city, with skate shops where you can buy new boards with real money and live events that you just can’t miss!
Would've been cool to see 3 and 4 get remasters. I know I played 3 but I don't think I never played 4.
Truly heartbreaking. Especially for the developers I'm guessing, they did a superb job with the 1+2 collection.
I hate Activision, bunch of slimy businessmen. I'll never play or support Overwatch or Diablo.
It's a shame. Hopefully Microsoft un-do that when the acquisition is complete and we do get those games again
@dschons I'd have to agree with this. Skate took everything that was great about THPS and made it better in my eyes and is the only skateboard game I play.
Terrible news, I will def buy 1+2 soon to show my support!
