Evo 2022 is just a few weeks away, set to kick off on the 5th August. It's going to be the first in-person Evo since 2019, with the last two events having been either cancelled or moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It'll also be the second Evo since Sony acquired the brand in March 2021.
Anyway, with the big weekend quickly closing in, Evo has officially unveiled the final registration numbers for each featured fighting game. Close to 8000 players have entered across nine titles, hailing from 63 different countries. Impressive stuff.
This is what the final registration numbers look like:
- Guilty Gear Strive - 2161 players
- Street Fighter V - 1320
- Tekken 7 - 1220
- King of Fighters XV - 1014
- Dragon Ball FighterZ - 636
- Granblue Fantasy Versus - 528
- Mortal Kombat 11 - 464
- Melty Blood: Type Lumina - 411
- Skull Girls 2nd Encore - 295
Obviously the fantastic Guilty Gear Strive is the headline here, absolutely dominating in terms of popularity. Its position at the peak comes as no real surprise, given that the game really struck a chord when it released bang in the middle of the aforementioned pandemic. It's fair to say that it's the hottest fighting game around right now, and with good reason.
Stalwart titles Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 fill out the top three, and it's impressive to see both games still commanding such an audience. Assuming that it lives up to its potential, Street Fighter 6 is going to be another juggernaut for Capcom when it comes to the hardcore fighting game scene.
And then there's King of Fighters XV, which launched just a few months ago. SNK's series has never been on the level of Street Fighter and Tekken when it comes to huge tournaments like Evo, but it's still done well for itself in making the top four.
That top four, by the way, will all be featured in the Evo 2022 arena on the final day of the event. The other games will finish up their tournaments on the previous day, or earlier.
Are you looking forward to Evo 2022? Which games will you be watching? Give your fingers a good stretch in the comments section below.

Guilty Gear went from not being at the last in person EVO to being the headliner for almost every single FGC event. I know some GG players don’t like the new direction Strive took it, but I feel like everyone should be proud of where it is now. Street Fighter 6 will undoubtedly explode the scene even more, but that’s the fighting game while this has been a side anime fighter. Congrats to ArcSys, and I can’t wait to see where the FGC goes from here.
Still bummed there’s no Smash Bros on MainStage EVO.
I get why, but damn is its absence felt.
@Deoxyr1bose Agreed, I can totally understand why some veteran GG players might not like Strive, but there's no denying ASW struck gold. It's an excellently designed game in terms of drawing a wider audience without sacrificing its tone or style. Of course, it also helps that it launched at a perfect time, when huge games like SFV and Tekken 7 are feeling a bit old and tired.
It'll be interesting to see how Strive — and even the next Guilty Gear — performs once SF6 is here alongside the inevitable Tekken 8. Either way, it's a very good time to be a fighting game fan.
ArcSys getting the most popular game at Evo? Sony take note.
Cool. Do not play fighting games myself, but Strive sure is nice to see in motion.
Not the numbers that SF or Smash could pull in their best years but impressive nonetheless - especially if you consider that the game didn't sell anywhere near as many copies as those.
I didn't care for Strive myself but congrats to Arc System Works anyway. Those are some impressive numbers. I can't put my finger on just what it is about them but I just can't get into their fighters unfortunately but I respect how popular they are.
Great to see Street Fighter V still right up there in second place! Well deserved and might be a bit bittersweet as this might be the last EVO we see SFV before SF6. I'll never forget you SFV!
But yes I'm pumped for EVO being back. It's been too long!
Good to see Guilty Gear doing good, SF still strong in it's last year, the biggest pool of Skull Girls of the year.
I'm intrigued in what Sony is going to do going forward e-sports wise. They have the power right now to take FG to the next level with EVO and now with it's new pc/ps5 hardware line and today acquisition one would think Sony has to have in mind at least the idea of being the owner of some e-sport game (allstars just isn't it 😂) so hey if they are going to let Bungie do what they want ... arksys ... only time will tell.
can’t wit til SF6 releases so it can bury the worst SF in years , and it’ll be the newest evo game . i always preferred blazblue over guilty gear so all there really is for me is MK11 but , daamn it’s so low 😂 netherealm gotta do better , MK11 could’ve been a lot better than what it is
@nomither6 sf5 isn’t the worst sf in years sf5 actually a pretty good game now the game just launch bare-bones.
I enjoyed Strive when it first game out and putting some time in online matches, but I kinda stopped playing it for awhile. I keep telling myself to go back to it but still haven’t done so. Still nice to see Arc doing well though. EVO should be interesting. At the moment the fighting games I’m currently playing is King of Fighters 15 and the Capcom Fighting game collection. Also, a buddy of mine finally picked Street Fighter V so I need to get back on that game.
Happy for Strive, but also for Melty Blood. Loved it even though I didn’t get to sink the proper amount of time into it like I did Strive.
@AdamNovice Indeed. ArcSys has felt like it might be joining to PlayStation stable for a while now.
@Shepherd_Tallon I'm hoping against hope that they could announce something at Evo.
@AdamNovice @Shepherd_Tallon I wouldn't expect it, tbh. They're not just GG and BlazBlue, they publish a bunch of stuff (especially in Japan).
That being said, I wouldn't mind it either. They'd probably still have to release these fighting games on PC day 1 though (preferably with crossplay at launch).
I'm fully expecting an announcement for the 1st Season 2 DLC and a firm date for the crossplay beta (hopefully something like "available now").
What I'd like to hear in addition to that is some update about reducing the input delay on PS5. EVO was the one that announced that it's being worked on between Sony, Epic and the game devs so it would make sense to follow up (this actually probably wouldn't be in the ArcSys announcements, since it also concerns KOF and possibly others - unless it's ArcSys that implements the changes first).
