The new Skate game from EA Sports and Full Circle will be a free-to-play, live service game. It’s, of course, the natural progression for a series that’s aiming to be a skating sandbox where you make up the rules one ollie at a time, but it’s certainly a surprise change of direction for a franchise that has historically been a full-price AAA game.
While the project’s still in very early development – as evidenced by a recent video which showed the state of the project right now – the plan is for the final version to feature full crossplay and cross-progression between PC and consoles. There’s a leaked alpha build that’s also doing the rounds, but the developer has kindly asked fans not to download it.
While Full Circle is eager to impression the idea that this will be a traditional Skate game through and through, it’s also adopting many of the trends we see in releases like Fortnite and Minecraft. Chief among these are CollaboZones, which are areas players will be able to collaboratively build and share with others online in real-time.
All of this will help to create a constantly evolving sandbox, where the challenges you face and the lines you skate are always changing and adapting. Of course, this does all raise concerns over microtransactions, but speaking with The Verge, product manager Isabelle Mocquard stressed that it won’t be “pay-to-win”. Instead, monetisation will be more about cosmetics.
Honestly, this will be a controversial direction for some, but it sounds like a smart direction for the series in this day and age. Free-to-play lowers the barrier for entry, and live service means there are potentially dozens of events and partnerships that EA Sports will be able to integrate into the game over time. We’re excited to learn more.

Noooooooooo…
I was so looking forward to this as well! I liked having a single player career! Hopefully there’s an offline mode for me to just skate about the map.
R.I.P. my love. I don't like the prospect of this.
I think it sounds exactly what I'd want it to be. An ever-changing online sandbox is absolutely how you reboot Skate in this day and age.
I’m not particularly interested in this one but it’s yet another game with crossplay at launch!
@get2sammyb What if it doesn’t take off though? EA won’t hesitate to pull the plug. At least if it was a traditional game with a traditional system development life cycle then it would be a complete game that survives forever. You can still play the original trilogy even after the servers went down.
Oof, FTP Live Service strikes again.
When they first announced it I didn't get my hopes up because I thought it would be always online. Now they've announced it's F2P, something that EA has never gotten right from their big franchises... I look forward to it becoming the next FIFA World and Need for Speed: World.
@nessisonett I guess I'm just not worrying about whether it will take off or not before it's even out, personally.
I can see what you're saying, but I suppose you could argue if it isn't able to sustain itself and everyone abandons it then it probably wasn't worth keeping around anyway.
Of course, there are caveats and examples of great games that end up short-lived purely for commercial reasons, and that could happen here I guess — but it just seems like a natural fit to me.
I think it'll be big to be honest.
One year after release: "EA shutting down Skate servers"
@get2sammyb With these games you always have to make sure it’s something that will last. Given that they don’t cost anything up front, they usually employ a model that demands a heavy time investment instead. Therefore, there’s no point in putting loads of time into something that will shut down and waste your time. EA have previous with this. Skateboarding’s still niche, they really need to get this right or it’s DOA.
I'm too old for online games. As a young dad it's too much of a commitment to interact online without being 99 levels behind the rest of the players. And I just don't have that much time for myself these days, which means I'll get constantly owned by others.
Please have a meaty offline career in which I can progress at my own pace.
Otherwise I might have to skip this one, even though it's one of my favourite franchises.
Thanks for the memories but F2P I’m outie, and I won’t let the door hit me in the azz on the way out!!!
Well, that’s taken it from “mildly interesting” to “you’d have to pay me to play it”.
And just when I thought skateboarding games were back, Tony Hawk gets the axe and Skate goes F2P. The original titles were great to me because of the single-player component. If that’s not there then I doubt it’ll hold my attention.
Thanks, but I'll stick with Skate 3.
Hopefully it's monetized in a fair and understandable way. I doubt it, but I hope.
Typical EA is late to the party. We're passed the free to play era, now people want free-ish to play, that is included on a game subscription service for no extra charge.
Removed - inappropriate language
At least now I know I won't be playing this, I can ignore anymore articles on this title and not waste anymore time or interest in this...
They are a 10 but they made Skate a live service
So the game will be around for 6 months and servers will be shut off. Got it.
Sony does free to play and everyone throws their toys out the pram including sammy but if ea does it it is exactly what they were hoping for. What!?
@BoldAndBrash eh?
I had a hunch that it would be online heavy from the recent vid they released. I don't usually turn my nose up at live service games but I'm honestly a bit gutted on this one.
Well that's a disappointment.
"Its cosmetics only - because youre worth it"
@BoldAndBrash DO WORK!! https://youtu.be/w5Ai81fBvJQ
Well that's that then, at least we still have Tony hawk 1+2 plus the memories of the previous 3 Skate games. I'll continue to pretend Skate is dead unless they announce a remaster collection.
And...they just killed it for me...
I can't wait to hear about Sony's live service games but I ain't looking forward these dismissive comment sections as soon as certain buzzwords are mentioned.
Unbelievable 😭
🙄🙄 is anyone suprised at this point? Lol
Anthem on wheels then.
Count me out. This should have been a slam dunk easy dose of goodwill for EA and yet they choose to bungle it instead. Disappointed but not surprised.
NOOOOOOOO PLEASE NOOOOOOOOO
After EA's successful management of Anthem I dont know what people are worried about? What now?! Oh nevermind.
@Artois2 Are you sure you got the right person?
@AdamNovice Oh it's going to be hell in the comments.
Doesn't matter how good something is, if it's multiplayer, free-to-play, and/or live service then people here will take an instant dislike to it. Which is fine, I guess, everyone likes different things — but it gets a bit tedious when it feels like people aren't even looking at the game anymore.
I’m a trifle worried about this and seems to have come rather out the blue. Guess we can’t complain (yet) as not seen the finished product and it’s free. As others have mentioned here it will be good if there’s an offline / single player mode but we’ll have to wait and see I guess.
As long as micro transactions are mainly cosmetic then I guess it’ll be ok. Still feel disappointed it not a ‘proper’ full price release but I hope to be pleasantly surprised.
EA is probably grinning with excitement about how much money they can make of selling decks, trucks, and working with major skateboarding to license items for this game.
@get2sammyb perhaps my apologies
Surprised, but pleased not be shelling out £50. We all know this is how many franchises will go eventually... especially the sports titles which are ideally suited to the live service model and a DLC subscription to update teams, kits, liveries each year. At least EA can drop the BS story modes.
Im not exactly excited about F2P. But I am willing to give this a try, because most times when I play skate I never am playing the single player stuff the most that I did was just the races.
Aaaand I'm out
Rest in Peace EA....REST IN PEACE.
So, we have a game that looks better than Dead Space (Callisto Protocol). Skate is live service. Fifa will not be Fifa anymore. They killed Titanfall 3. They are dying over there lol
Let's hope they don't f up the new Star Wars game
At least they aint charging an entrance fee at the door. This is how all of EA's micro transaction infested games should be handled quite frankly.
At least there’s Session on Steam. S’good.
@get2sammyb for me, it’s not so much that it’s a live service game, but that it’s an EA live service game haha
Free to play and EA is a bad combination, but if it is only cosmetic stuff I guess it wouldn't be too bad.
Free to Play is a misnomer you always pay with money or time.
This announcement took my hype from an 8 to a 2. I dont want to play with randos on a server. I do t want to spend money to change my look. I much prefer skate the way it was.
I’m out. RIP skate.
So it's a game with no offline single player then , Hard pass
@nessisonett if it's free to play it will most definitely require an online connection
I’m just gonna say it… NOOOOOOOOOOO
It being free is pretty neat & sweet to me. I'm thinking it might turn out as a skating-only Riders Republic. Maybe some roller skating in the future...hyped!
I will be playing!
How are these execs still remaining in their jobs? Surely they’d be better off working in casinos or building ATM machines because all they know how to do is extract money from people in the least exciting way.
Live service is just a buzz word for (release unfinished).
EA are egregious with microtransactions in their full priced games. Imagine how ***** their free to play ones will be.
Why not add NFTs and just seal the deal
@get2sammyb There's ways Sony would be able to limit backlash like announcing plenty of traditional 1st party single player games alongside their live service games in a Playstation Showcase.
Given Sony's track record with promoting stuff recently though, I wouldn't be surprised if they did the complete opposite and the only 1st party single player game outside of PC ports in the next Playstation Showcase is more info on GoW Ragnarok.
I cannot express how sad this honestly makes me.
One of favourite franchises and now they have butchered it.
Down with EA.
That's it, I'm out. Was excited for this too.
As tears roll down my face ...
Please just make it right free-to-play = heavy micro transactions from past games please make it right as i loved skate 1,2,3 so very much.
Can't wait for it, such a lack of decent skateboarding games. Devs seem to be in it for the right reasons just don't buy the Microtransactions 🙌
I might goof around with it for a short while, but otherwise hard pass from me!
This is an imminent catastrophe.
Apparently data miners have found the new Skate will include gambling mechanics, despite the dev claiming there won't be loot boxes.
