Cyberpunk 2077's incredible anime-fueled comeback has broken another impressive milestone, with the once-maligned RPG smashing the same-day concurrent player record of its wildly popular predecessor, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It's an incredible feat, especially when you consider the state the game launched in almost two years ago.
Industry analyst Benji-Sales noted the achievement after Cyberpunk 2077's concurrent Steam player count sailed north of The Witcher 3's all-time peak of 103,329.
This upward trend continued as the combination of Edgerunner's positive buzz, a half-price sale on Steam, and the fact of the weekend being scientifically the most optimal time to play video games saw the numbers continue to ascend to dizzying heights.
It's a fascinating twist in the ongoing Cyberpunk saga, which will officially conclude with the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion. Of course, all of this is only going off of the relevant Steam data available for PC players, we can only imagine how many of our console brethren were logged in over the weekend as well.
What do you think of Cyberpunk 2077's surprise comeback? Are you ready to forgive and forget, or are the wounds still too fresh? Pour out your soul in the comments section below.

I still don't like that CD projeckt basically "got away" with releasing an absolutely broken game at launch, so bad that Sony had to issue refunds, only to get so much success now. Then again I love No Man's Sky so continuing to hate on this would make me a hypocrite. Still...I just don't like the idea that devs can succeed if they just "fix it later". Well, I suppose I can just not buy games at launch and wait until a year later to grab them, when they're finished.
Yeah the combination of a fantastic anime, a great free update released alongside it plus nearly 2 years of fixes and new features have put the game at the highest its ever been. I myself have been putting in some serious time this past week as the side quests are so good.
Its a shame last gen players can't really enjoy it the way us current gen and PC players can though considering its still pretty meh on last gen despite the support.
They can polish it up and patch it all they like but it still won't fix that it's a very average game (in my pinion).
Get ready for a bombardment of game based anime's coming to Netflix
Finally got around to the Platinum on the PS5 yesterday. Really enjoyed it and looking forward to the DLC.
All this because of that awful anime? I watched 5 minutes and couldn't bear to watch more. It felt like watching blade runner ***** and totally irrelevant to cyberpunk world. Anyway I've been defending cdpr and the game since I beat it on ps4 but no way it deserves to be put in the same league as witcher 3
@Arisen I disagree. More positive view would be to wish Witcher3 Wild Hunt to smash it after releasing remaster. As much Witcher has larger and great story, it is old game and more casual gamers will choose newer games with better graphics and gameplay.
@ATaco Exactly, it really irritates me that there are people saying, "It's always been good, it was just bugs that's all" when that is not the only problem it has and shows how little people do their research. They lied about so many features coming to the game and the performance of last gen systems. It is not ok at all.
@Nepp67 Exactly. There’s a lot of revisionism going on and it feels like CDPR are going to get away with the flak they deserve. No need for introspection given their bumper sales and newfound kudos (thanks to the anime, not because they’ve delivered the game they promised).
I haven't watched the anime, but given the recent releases of updates and patches I've recently given this a return play too.
I must say, on PC its like its been transformed, I've not experienced any glitches or bugs and everything works. The world can capture your imagination if its not full of bugs, and now the game appears fixed at least I can travel around Night City and see what they have created - its good!
I'm lucky, I use an RTX 3090, so can play at ultra with full ray tracing, but I'd urge others who dropped the title because of bugs and issues to try it now if they are not too sour on the experience. It finally seems to work, huzzah!
Through the power of anime!
@Nepp67 @ShadowofSparta @ATaco It's not "getting away" with something. Cdpr got their share of deserved flak, they put in the work to improve on their mistakes and continue to do so.
It's like you got someone with a stain on his criminal record and instead of giving him the chance to rehabilitate, society shuns them forever. Unfortunately that unforgiving and unhealthy way of thinking is universally present among many gamers with a mislead sense of "justice".
And I know how you'll all go on about how they "lied" to us. Yes, perhaps they did, it's unfortunate, but it's human, but I'd rather focus on the great things this talented team can come up with in the future.
@Smash41 Couldn't agree more. Played the story once, started a second playthrough. Fell off because I was bored. Not a problem though, plenty of other games out there!
I'm glad the game has found an audience though. CDPR needs that money to make Witcher 4 which hopefully won't be a bug fest on arrival.

@tameshiyaku They're ridiculous. Leave them to stay angry FOREVER! Dunno why they're on here, they should go burn the CDPR offices down if that'd give them the satisfaction.
What took them 2 years to get these numbers on PC? All the problems with the game didn't apply on PC where it played well didn't it?
@Gloamin oh. I thought it was OK on PC because other sites recommended the game. Shows what they know!!
@riceNpea the all-time peak is over 1 Million on Steam, which seems to a key point they forget to mention.
Also the game is great, I paid exactly zero attention to all the “promises” though. Played the game for what it was, loved it,
@Slippship I did all the gigs on my one and only playthrough and I found them more entertaining than the missions. Primarily because they were all action. 😊
@ChrisDeku 1 million? Then this claim makes no sense. Weird.
@Gloamin game needs a NG+
I was sooo disappointed after leveling up my V to be a jedi master that I could experience the game on an even harder difficulty setting in NG+
I thought one would unlock because Very Hard was far too easy.
@riceNpea 1,054, 388 to be precise.
The point of this tweet was to highlight that the game beat The Witcher 3’s all-time peak 2 years after release but I think the article writer misunderstood
@ChrisDeku and now i am too. This article seems a bit pointless now.
@Gloamin you want to get that cough looked at. Sounds bad 😆
Imagine buying the game on PS4 after seeing it recommended. I'd be pretty annoyed.
I said I'd put put off jumping back in until after the onslaught of games coming out...but I couldn't resist! The power of anime!
wow news that when a game works, people play it, who knew!
average game at best.
Frickin chooms buying it. Can't wait for the expansion myself though
I'm glad more and more people are playing this. I wish I could play it again for the very first time. Best game I've played for many many years.
@tameshiyaku
I just don't like the precedent it sets. In the state Cyberpunk originally released, it should have been labelled "Early Access" and priced accordingly. I don't like this mentality from the industry that you can release an unfinished product at full price and then just fix it later. I don't necessarily feel lied to, just insulted.
@ATaco in what sense have they 'got away' with it? CDPR suffered massive reputational damage and ridicule over long period.
Just because they're having a 'redemeption' moment, doesn't negate that
@Ratchet_and_Dank
It will all be forgotten as soon as the next big Witcher game is announce and that first trailer hits. I guarantee it.
@tameshiyaku Lol “it’s human”. Even if we took your rehab analogy, all they’ve done is make the game not the broken mess it was. The equivalent of a vandal being told to clean up the mess they made. I’m all for rehabilitation but that requires some kind of positive investment from the “criminal”. In the world of rehabilitation, this means the person going back out into the community and trying to positively integrate back into society. They’re not there yet, but they’re being treated like they are. Are they showing signs? Of course. Should we allow them to keep at it? Of course. But let’s be steady holding them in the same regard as we did before the whole initial fiasco. They need to regain that trust by showing us they’re trustworthy. Just as it’s foolish to never give someone a chance because of their past, it’s equally foolish to so readily give them your trust again. Given that the game still has unfinished systems and doesn’t quite match what they promised, I’d say they still have some way to go beyond just making the game stable.
@TheArt Nobody is angry here and it’s pure sensationalist drivel to suggest that anyone being critical of CDPR wants to secretly burn them down, jesus. Whatever man, I give up. If you’re happy with the “release broken, fix 18 months later” and “exaggerated misleading marketing” approach, I suppose that’s just where gaming is heading. As long as you’re having fun with the game right?
Will only keep getting more popular after the expansion. Cant wait
And again this is Steam so the PC version. That has nothing to do with the PS4 version.
PC gamers do not judge games based on the PS4 version... Just like nobody is judging a PS5 game based on the Switch version.
Hey folks IM BACK! lol. Anyway, ive watched vids of the ps4 pro version after the newest patch and its just an empty barren city devoid of life. Its just so unenticing as much as i want it to be.
Whats it like on ps5? Are the big crowds in the city and cars on the road like there should be?
@ShadowofSparta Soooooo what exactly do you want folk to do to them right now...
I’m happy people are finally realizing this game… I’ve said since day One it is amazing (but I more then likely was one of the few playing on a ps5 so I only had a few crashes and all was good otherwise as I slowly followed the storyline). Truth is is it is a complex and difficult game at some spots…. Like drone flying between sound and thermo and just figuring out what to do on the fly without really being told. There were new unique experiences in this game that almost felt like the game was cracked or flawed…. But learning the rules and controls on the fly caused the game to feel wonkey….. but I don’t think it was so much the game as it was the user’s frustrations. Now a few years later after stuffs been ironed out (and new gen hardware is easier to come by). The game is as good as it ever was…. Just more people have the ability to play it on more effective systems and yes patches (but still…) it is an outstanding game… only thing for me was it was far too short… just when I felt like I was getting the hang of it….. poof done…. I really should replay it and explore off the main story more and just mess around in the massive world. It truly feels like I explored less then 10% of the whole map as I just stuck to the script.
Something else to consider though is The Witcher 3 has a separate listing for the game of year edition on Steam...
I've put in about 40 hours in the last couple weeks. It started feeling very, very immersive. I was very impressed and I enjoyed the story. There is, however, plenty to critique about the game that has been well documented, but I find that with most open world games. As time has passed, I have felt less immersed because when navigating the open world I don't seem to stumble upon side missions/stories like I would in The Witcher 3. In that game, you'd randomly talk to someone and it would kick off a whole adventure. In Cyberpunk, everyone just calls you and suddenly you have a new mission. Missions, however, don't seem to organically spring up out of wandering. I don't know, maybe I'm driving too much and missing them if they're there. That said, the side missions that you get calls for are enjoyable for what they are, and in general I enjoy the game well enough. Given the controversy of the game's release, I'm glad that it has a new lease on life, and I hope CD Projekt Red has learned a lesson.
Speaking of The Witcher 3, it's about to be Q4 and the release window for the PS5 update for it...have a feeling it's going to be pushed again 😔
@Smash41 Agreed. It's such a shame, I hear the police AI still have Goku's instant transmission ability.
@UltimateOtaku91 Oh that's already happening, and I'm all in! Love it when we get anime based on video games.
