Today in cursed monkey paw wishes, Capcom's Onimusha series is coming back — but not as a video game. Netflix has announced a new anime based on the property, and to be fair, it could be cool. Apparently, prolific director Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer, 13 Assassins, and many more) is behind the project, alongside Shinya Sugai, who's worked on a bunch of anime over the years.
It's admittedly difficult to get too excited about this project, though. Let's not forget that the last time Netflix published an anime based on a Capcom title, we ended up with the decidedly poor Dragon's Dogma adaptation. This Onimusha show will hinge on 3D animation, too.
We'll obviously need to see it in action, though, and fans will be hoping that Onimusha returning — in any form — might mean that Capcom is prepared to greenlight another game at some point. Fingers crossed!

It looks quite good, though!
@get2sammyb it does but i worry when i see animation on Netflix after whats happened to Final Space
@get2sammyb Slight typo in the article title, mate.
Was pretty hyped when I read this myself.
Everyone watch it! Maybe we'll get a new game.
@Danloaded other than cancelling it prematurely what did Netflix do wrong with Final Space?
It does make me wonder if Capcom might be looking into bringing back the games.
As far as the anime goes? I really don't like the art-style. Was the same with Dragon's Dogma one. But im sure there's people who will enjoy it.
@riceNpea not so much Netflix but WB. They've written it off completely and all episodes will be unavailable. Was only shown on Netflix but WB has shown how much companies value animation
3D just doesn't fit the genre. I want my anime 2D, mad as a brush and action-packed!
@Danloaded Time to buy the 1st series then because it was genius. Brilliant scripting and storytelling.
@LN78 Thanks, fixed!
@riceNpea all been taken off sale unfortunately. Afraid only the pirates can help now
Takashi Miike means I'm onboard! Fingers crossed the end result is more Castlevania in quality and less Dragons Dogma.
@Danloaded what a shame. The Gary and Mooncake ftw!!
Netflix going hard with the animes <3
Ghost of Tsushima anime when? It would be dope!
Shut up and take my money.
Can’t say I know the game myself, but if there’s even a trace of Ichi the Killer in this anime then oh boy… 😂😂
Capcom give me more onimusha.video games.about a collection or a remake.word up son
On one hand, I hate this animation style. It's one of the many reasons I stopped watching that awful Dragon's Dogma show. On the other hand, seeing Takashi Miike involved intrigues me. That man is wildly unpredictable when it comes to projects he chooses, and he's actually made some surprisingly alright video game adaptations.
I didn't think Dragon's Dogma was bad. I'm clearly in the minority on that it seems.
I fear more classic games we'd love to see finish or return will be relegated to anime versions only. Shenmue, Onimusha... maybe Tenchu is next?
All I can think reading Takashi Miike's name are his cameos and name-drops in No More Heroes ahahahah
So, a Miike-directed NMH movie when? 😃
If we have to suffer through another terrible netflix adaptation of a capcom ip for a new Onimusha then so be it.
I just hope it's better than Capcom's previous netflix game to anime adaptation, Dragon's dogma.

Don't care much for the anime (especially considering the DD team are appearently behind this) but if this somehow implies a new game is coming then thats cool. Either way its nice seeing Onimusha getting some more attention.
This is the second time Takashi is involved with a Capcom IP right? I know he was behind the live-action Ace Attorney film.
If it does well, they'll think people want more of the anime and not the game. If it does bad, they'll think people aren't interested in the IP so won't make any new games.
@shogunrok why the misplaced doubt?
1) Netflix has produced mostly great adaptations as of late 2) just because the games share the same publisher is no indication that it'll be treated similarly as dragon's dogma, especially if it's not even the same animation studio involved 3) do you even know who Takashi Miike is? The man is a legendary director! 4) Lastly, maybe this will generate more buzz for a new onimusha game.
Not saying to be so hyped to think nothing could go wrong, but cut them some slack, especially after Arcane, Cyberpunk, Tekken and Cuphead.
Having Toshiro Mifune's likeness is the cherry on top.
@TheCollector316 agree, it was odd but had it's moments. The game didn't offer anything more substantial storywise, but had some great gameplay.
@shogunrok just realized it is the same animation studio 😅
Oh well, still hopeful.
Dunno if Capcom will make another Onimusha game anytime soon there's enough Samuninja type souls games around and that's probably the direction the game will go in. They should give us power stone. No one has done anything similar all the others are 2.5D like smash.
I’m hoping it will be good. I love the onimusha series.
@z0d15g0d Assuming the Capcom leaks from a couple years back were accurate, both an Onimusha game and a Power Stone remake are in development.
@riceNpea Im so dissapointed they left it with a massive cliffhanger really really bad.
I was never expecting a new game, so an animated series is fine with me!
