We always said that PS5 sales would rocket as soon as Sony could provide enough stock, and that's exactly what's happening in the UK. Stock is finally reaching more agreeable levels — almost two whole years after the console's release — and that's allowed the current-gen machine to overtake the Nintendo Switch in total sales for 2022 so far.
According to in-the-know analyst Christopher Dring, PS5 stock levels increased by a significant 56 per cent in August, which we imagine was more than enough to push the system beyond Nintendo's now close to six-year-old device. Sony will be hoping that this upward trend continues as we creep closer to the holiday season, and what is shaping up to be a very busy 2023 for blockbuster software.
Can you see the PS5 slowing down anytime soon? Is this just the start of PlayStation dominance? Make some predictions in the comments section below.

Sony just keep catching those L’s! 🤣
edit. hold up a minute… where’s the L here?!?! This ain’t right… Miss… MISS?
Glad to know stock is finally arriving - just in time for the despicable price rise to kick in.
Hopefully they might get a few stand alone units in stock and maybe Sony might think about their customers for once and remove the £30 profit surplus.
Well deserved, though the price hike should never have happened.
People pay for quality that’s why people buying ps5 even with the price increase.
fanboys and PlayStation haters here wanting to see ps5 down fall are angry right now 😂.
Nice to see stock levels increasing and more people enjoying the system.
@sanderson72
Profit surplus? Do you know how much it costs to make a ps5?? $800 as of June 2022! Even in 2020 it cost Sony over $450 to make a single ps5. This does not includes all the marketing, distribution, and advertising costs which would increase the cost significantly more.
The prices of components have increased significantly over the past two years due to Covid and global economic turmoil. They're selling at a heavy loss if anything. Please don't spread uneducated nonsense.

@OneWingedAngel I thought they stopped selling at a loss at 10 million units
@naruball
It's regrettable but a necessity. The cost of components and manufacturing costs have increased significantly. Sony was already selling the ps5 at a loss but the costs kept increasing so they had to increase the price. See my other comments for figures and links.
@rockodoodle
They "expected" to break even in June 2021 at old component prices but the component prices kept increasing. In Accounting break even means that you have finally recovered your research and development costs that you spent creating and launching the product. You can now start earning a profit IF all the costs remain the same and you can keep getting the components at the same old rates. According to latest prices it costs estimated $800 to make a ps5 compared to $450 in 220. This is before including all the sales, distribution, and advertising costs.
Not surprised. If buying today - It is either a PS5 or a PC.
Just depends on how much you want/can spend. Pick one and you are set for the next generation with tons of games.
'Sony will be hoping that this upward trend continues as we creep closer to the holiday season'
We're in the holiday season now. I've just returned from holiday in fact. Good for Sony selling out its console. I hope this will encourage them to make more PS5 exclusive games.
@OneWingedAngel As @rockodoodle says, they were already making a profit on the DOE from day 1 and they expected to break into profit on the disc edition over a year ago.
"Sony has never officially disclosed the cost to make a PS5." - your techjury.net link.
As for marketing and so on, I've not seen a PS5 advert in about a year now?
Perhaps Sony should concentrate on making more PS5 games and then recoup the costs from the software licences? That would be based on 1st party studios pumping out something worth the £70 RRP.
This trend will continue in the UK as long as there is stock. This week overall stock has been hard to come by again. It will peak and trough depending on stock availability.
Most stores now also have caught up with the new price, but it doesn’t seem to be making any difference to sales etc.
Can you imagine how the last two years would have gone if they had been able to deliver sufficient stock? They could have stormed it all right out of the gates.
Maybe they still will.
@naruball The price increase is unfortunate and frustrating, but the only thing I would say is to read about it in articles written by economists.
They just deal with the facts and the reasons why, not with perceived narratives or how Sony is the bad guy now.
@sanderson72 one can surely make an educated guess without official numbers and we do know from the investor report that the price was below manufacturing costs. No concrete reason to believe the recent price hike charged that.
And yeah there's selling at a loss and recouping on software sales but there's still only so much loss they can tolerate I'm sure. It can't just be any amount of loss.
@Shepherd_Tallon I fully understand that ps5s are expensive to make and the cost has increased instead of the opposite, which had been the case in the past. But with record breaking profits, they could sell them at a loss and more than make up for it with subscriptions, games, microtransactions, etc.
@sanderson72
I think you’ll find the £30 is more than eaten up by prise rises on shipping alone. Let alone fighting everyone for semiconductors.
@naruball how do we know they're not being sold at a loss, or even break even?
@naruball
Problem is projected profits have taken a massive nosedive from where they where expecting it to be. This impacts investment and is what necessitated the price rise to begin with.
More games better selection and more for gamers.
@thefourfoldroot1 was just gonna point to their 14 percent dip.
Also some of the profit gains were related to currency fluctuations apparently. So there's that as well.
The hype for the PS5 seems to me more than what the PS4 was and yet the PS4 at this point of the same amount of time on the market had sold more than PS5 has. Just goes to show how frustrating all these shortages have been for PS cause it should be comfortably ahead of the PS4 in sales numbers at this point. Now though more recently it seems to be stretching its legs properly which is nice to see, hope this continues cause the PS5 genuinely deserves it
had there been no shortages, enough ps5 would have been sold to reduce crossgen releases massively, sadly as its only around20-22mil mark it will be a while till most ps5 only
I'm signed up for PS5 stock alerts, and I've noticed them becoming available with increased regularity in the last several weeks in the U.S. as well.
Hopefully this trend continues so that everyone who wants a PS5 can easily find one.
It's great news that more and more people will be able to get their hands on a ps5.
As for the price increase, my family food bill is £10 - £15 more A WEEK! so I honestly don't think a £30 price rise on a console that will last you 5 plus years in the current climate is that bad. And nobodies forced to buy one.
Eventually everyone will own a Switch and then new sales will drop to zero, letting any competitor beat time-specific sales total, but not life-time sales total.
Unless:
1) Switch owners decide to own more than one
2) Nintendo releases a new model of Switch
@badbob001 7 billion Switches would be impressive sales figures.
I have no regrets on selling my Switch and buying a ps5.. history repeats itself, I did the same thing with my megadrive for a ps1...
They also have overtaken must unpopular and anti-loyal fan platform in existence, only made a bundle version of the PS5 even mildly available to syphon more revenue then decided to lie to raise prices anyways, taking advantage of post covid deception, lied about generations, and charged more for games than any other platform.
Great year and "generation leap" for Sony indeed
Huh. That's kinda weird to read almost right after the Switch was declared UK's most profitable form of entertainment. We'll see how the holidays go; PS5 will presumably have stock, and Switch will have Pokemon (and Mario + Rabbits, if that ends up a big seller in the UK).
I'm fortunate enough to own both, and IMO they are both pretty great in their 'own lane'.
I am quite surprised with this outcome, but I agree with someone else's post I saw earlier... perhaps now nearly everyone already owns a Switch?!
@sanderson72 everything has gone up mate, I don't why people assume electronics should be immune to this , the quest 2 increased by 100 not so long ago and I didn't see this furore, gaming is an expensive hobby although they're worse ,I collect hot toys now thats an expensive hobby.
@KundaliniRising333 but microsoft charge 69.99 for forza 5 on the xbox store ? Ps single player exclusives cost a fortune to produce ive yet to see ms make one of the same quality ,and let's be honest,switch games are not far in front of games available on the play store .
@4kgk2 Jim Ryan did a good job on you😆
@Beerheadgamer82 Ironically there's not enough games on any current gen system to justify a price hike when we're already forced to buy the horizon bundle.
@Blackbluto it's not always about the games already released over the past couple years. There's the hype for GoW Ragnarok and although Spiderman 2 might be next year and Wolverine possibly the following year, there's still so much to look forward to on PS5 and the many unannounced games to be excited for. Horizon Forbidden West had already topped the charts before it came bundled in with a PS5 and I also purchased it day one without a bundle
Great news, the ps5 is the best supported next gen console right now and has more pure next gen games than the competition as well, better controller, better subscription over the last three months in terms of additions and the best UI best single player exclusives, full jrpg support and the fastest SSD.
But still there's a few things they need to learn from Microsoft, free cloud saves is one of those, improve their backwards compatibility, improve their "Smart delivery", bring ps plus streaming to mobile, show more love to indies and reduce game prices back to £60
Only took the PS5 8 months to beat a 5 year old console, good job 😜
Just shows how much the shortages have effected the production.
How’s Xbox doin haha. The only reason it’s close is cos of the parts shortage
Haters will still moan. Thing is a lot of places still sell the bundles at similar prices despite 30£ increase. Pound and Euro have been losing a lot of their values against dollar this year. Saw a lot of news about 30£ increase but I barely see news of Apple increases their pro phone by 150£ but keep the same price in the Us)
Until there are decent games that don't come out on PS4 aswell. Don't see a point of transition
@OneWingedAngel you know Sony’s profit margin has increased 0,5% this year and that their current profit margin is 10%?
The price increase of the PS5 is ***** and absolutely not a necessity.
@KundaliniRising333 Why be so relentlessly negative? In every post! Plenty of great content to play and in the pipeline. Price rises are unfortunate, but it’s the world we live in. It’s not about being ani-loyal fans or anything, it’s just an economic reality.
@UltimateOtaku91 wait, are we still calling it next gen? Two years in?
@riceNpea Oh, I wasn't saying they're not being sold at a loss. I meant that if the loss isn't huge (like the ps3 days), then it'd be wise to take the loss and keep the price as it is. It makes Sony look bad that MS didn't follow suit.
i’m fuming right now !
@naruball "they could sell them at a loss and more than make up for it with subscriptions, games, microtransactions, etc."
Ew microtransactions? Really? I'd rather pay 600 for a PS5 if it meant no microtransactions. It's one of the most hated components of gaming and you'd rather have more of that than cough up another 50 upfront?
@naruball
The 20GB PS3 model sold for $500 which is the equivalent of $760 dollars today or $910 for the 60Gb model.
Don't forget in the USA those numbers don't include taxes, average sales taxes would make those numbers around $820 and $980.
We're not getting hosed as bad as a lot of people think we are regarding the PS5 prices.
@naruball whilst 95% of games are still getting released on last gen consoles, then yes lol
@UltimateOtaku91 that makes no sense. Next means it hasn't happened yet. E.g. "I'll see you next week", "He'll be the next one to be fired".
@UltimateOtaku91 Should think about calling it new gen if you're not ready for current gen.
Personally I considered the PS5 new gen from the first year of launch but now consider it current gen. Both PS4 and PS5 being current gens but I prefer to give the word to PS5 now as PS4 fades out. At the moment I call the PS5 new gen and PS4 last gen so neither get current
@GreatAuk I know, but the ps3 cost a lot more at the time to make and they were losing a ton of money on each console sold. Even when ps2 was way ahead of the competition, they chose to sell it at a loss to undercut Ninty and MS and it worked. They were playing the long game and it paid off.
@GreatAuk "Ew microtransactions? Really? I'd rather pay 600 for a PS5 if it meant no microtransactions. It's one of the most hated components of gaming and you'd rather have more of that than cough up another 50 upfront?"
You clearly misunderstood. They're already making a ton of money from microtransactions from third party games. I'm not saying they should add them to their own games, though personally I don't mind them if they're not intrusive (I simply don't buy them). If someone wants to spend extra money on a hat just because it comes in green instead of blue (that is part of the main game), more power to them.
As for MTX being one of the most hated components of gaming, keep in mind that loud internet minority =/= average gamer, hence how games like Fortenite have been so successful.
Imma bottle up some of those Nintendo tears and sell em to Sony fans and make a killing. A Bell Daphine 2.0 if you will. Just don't drink em is all I'm asking.
