So far, most of the official footage we've seen of Sonic Frontiers has been presented with a smooth framerate of 60 frames-per-second. This is obviously the ideal for a game that lets you move so quickly, but presumably, everything we've seen has been running on a decent PC. How is the game going to perform on consoles? Well, apparently, it will hit 60fps on PS5, but only if you don't mind a lower resolution.
Twitter user tadanohi, who attended Tokyo Game Show recently, asked a SEGA representative about Frontiers' technical performance. Apparently, the game will have two options on PS5: 4K resolution at 30fps, or 1080p at 60fps. In other words, a fidelity mode and a performance mode. PS4, meanwhile, will present the game at 1080p and 30fps.
Of course, this is the word of just one person, so there's a possibility there might be some inaccuracies here. That said, it's not unusual for PS5 games to have similar visual options — many offer fidelity and performance modes. We've reached out to SEGA for clarification, and will update the story if we hear back.

To be fair, Open World games on consoles like GTA usually runs at 30 fps, so it was bound to happen. But still, a slight letdown for me since I always prefer playing games at 60 fps on 4K. But i hope this rumor is inaccurate.
They should be able to have a higher resolution at 60fps on PS5. If it's only 1080p then it's poorly optimized. It should easily be able to hit 1440p upsampled or dynamic 4k with DRS. If it's 1080p/60 on PS5, they've got issues. Honestly at 1080p they should be able to do 120fps. Not surprising considering issues with Sonic games in the past.
30 fps on such a high-speed game is total BS in my opinion, while 1080p is totally fine. Did anyone complain „But I want a 4k30 option for Returnal“?
Most PS5 games have this option. Choice is generally good but I would have thought 1440p would be possible. Its almost double the pixels of 1080p and around half the pixels of 4k and usually upscales really well. 1080p seems a little low.
Only 1080 seems a bit too low for the ps5
1080p?! That's unacceptable. As mentioned above, the game is just poorly optomized technically to be at such a low rez on Ps5.
In flat games (non VR) I really can’t tell the difference between dynamic res and 4K (not even sure I can tell the difference between 4K and 1080/1440 in some games to be honest); and I also can’t honestly tell the difference between 30fps, 60fps, and 120fps in what I’ve played. Hell, I can’t even tell the difference between HDR and not…
I just want 0 load time honestly, lol, that’s all I can get a big benefit from.
(And, yeah, I own one of those 4K HDR LG TVs DF recommended, so my TV does support all of that)
Choose 60fps. If there's time to see the graphics at 4K in a Sonic game they've made it wrong.
I think people, myself included, often forget that 4k resolution is still quite taxing on the average game, even with the power of PS5
if 4K30 is viable then surely 1440p60 is... it's less than half the pixel count of 4K
This gen is basically a 1440/60 gen and 4k 30 tops if that depending on drs.
So I think most devs should be aiming for 1440/60 and add the 4k thing in for anyone that just needs that (I have a 4k tv and 1440 is fine).
1080 does seem low unless one has an XBSS. Guess Digital Foundry will let us all know when it releases.
I pretty much choose higher frame rate on every game that lets me..if its a choice of having 1080p/1800p@60fps over 4k@30fps i'll take the lower resolution everytime but i also know that people prefer the 30fps. At least there is an option..
A Sonic game having either of those is a miracle in itself.
60 FPS is the most important thing, I always run in Performance Mode.
60 fps all the way.
that’s a real shame .
@Milt To be fair it isn't surprising that it's like this. Sonic Forces was well optimised on PS4 at 1080p 60, but the PS4 Pro support amounted to... literally nothing, it was still 1080p 60fps. Then for Xbox One it was only 720p, Xbox One X was 1080p for some levels and 1800p for others. Switch ran at 720p 30 regardless of docked or portable mode.
@RogerRoger it's not asking too much to optimize a game for multiple platforms. It's the basis of PC optimization and plenty of games do it. If you're going to put it out on multiple platforms, then optimize it for each of those. As long as this game has been in development, they've had the time to do it. Look at Diablo 3, Doom Eternal, Ori, and The Witcher 3 as examples of games that run great on Switch but the settings can be turned way up on other platforms. We'll see how another Sega game Persona 5 does, but I suspect it will run well on everything just like Catherine Full Body does. If you can literally only get 60/1080 outta current gen, your game needs work. It's just laziness. When game prices are what they are for current gen, asking for optimization isn't asking too much.
I'll put it this way, if games like Spider-Man can run at 1440/60 with Ray Traced Reflections turned on, you can get 1440/60 outta a Sonic game. It's not like it has crazy detailed textures to load in or complex lighting systems.
And looking back on past Sonic releases, they've had issues. The remaster of Sonic Colors that shipped last year, shipped with some serious issues. I can't recall exactly what they were but I'm pretty sure it was common things like frame rate on what was advertised as a remaster, which by definition is created to improve upon the those things.
Also just to those talking about things being 4K, native 4k really isn't important or it shouldn't be. It's VERY difficult to tell the difference between native 4K & dynamic and pretty hard for a normal person's eyes to differentiate between 1440 upsampled to 4K. Unless you sit an inch away from the screen, resolution isn't that big of a deal after you're up to 1440p. But anyone can tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p/Dynamic 4K/native 4k on a large screen. If you have a TV 40 inches or bigger, anyone's eyesight can see that 1080p is noticably blurry compared to anything over 1440p.
@GalacticBreakdown couldn’t agree more! 16Gb GDDR5/Zen 2 and 1080p 60fps is their result! Typical Sega
Should be at least 1440p/60 or Dynamic 4K with a lower bound of 1440p. I can’t see why this needs to go lower if you see why Horizon Zero Dawn is pushing at 60 fps
Makes me wonder about the Switch version...
Sega is smoking! 1080p m@60 nooo way they better get back in the lab on optimize
Graphics in videogames are too good anyways compared to PS2 and PS3 era. Best to do 60fps for a smooth gameplay
@RogerRoger it's not really unfair. Sonic Team isn't a small indie team or anything. There are plenty of similar games that run great on Switch & are pushed up on other platforms, from teams smaller than Sonic Team. Disco Elysium, Paradise Killer, and tons of indie games. I'm not bagging on Sonic Team here or having unrealistic expectations at all. But better1080/60 isn't unreasonable to expect from a team with the resources of Sonic Team & Sega.
I'm by no means dismissing their work, the game looks pretty good from my eyes, I'm just saying the work isn't nearly as complex as other games that are pushing boundaries.
60FPS, every day of the week, but if that means 60FPS is 1080p, they're going to get ripped to shreds. 1080p would be unacceptable.
I don't know why the headline of the article reads like the writer has an issue with this choice... It's a good thing that ALL games need.
4K @ 60 fps should be very attainable! Damn shame if this rumor is true.
