Nintendo Switch fans will already know good Octopath Traveler can look, but with its sequel, Octopath Traveler II, coming to PS5 and PS4 next year, we've been watching this new gameplay footage with wide eyes. This title really is a beauty.
You can watch said gameplay for yourself above. It's roughly 20 minutes of footage, streamed directly during the title's Tokyo Game Show 2022 presentation. It's got lengthy stints of exploration — showing off a bunch of different environments — and a bit of a turn based combat.
The original Octopath Traveler received loads of high review scores back when it launched in 2018, and this sequel will no doubt be aiming for similar success. Are you excited to play Octopath Traveler II? Pick a path in the comments section below.

I kinda dont see the point of releasing this Game on Playstation...but not the first one?
As much as I Iike owning my JRPGs on cartridge, I will have to pick this one up on PS5 to see the updated HD-2D graphics in all their 4k glory.
@IonMagi does there need to be a point to it? At least it's coming.
@riceNpea Well yeah, it wont sell well at all because people obviously played the first one on PC or Switch and will mostly likely also buy the 2nd one there
@riceNpea While I doubt this is a continuation of the first game, it still doesn't make a whole lot of sense to not put the first one on PS4. It's on Xbox One because Microsoft paid them money for it, so obviously it's not a Switch exclusive. Given that fact, it would have taken little effort.
It's not a necessity to have the first one on the PS4, it's just (once again) something that doesn't make a whole lot of sense at this point. Not having the first one will also likely really hurt sales of the game on PlayStation though as some people won't realize you don't have to play the first one. At the very least they could have bundled it with a Deluxe Edition.
@IonMagi While I assume that it won't sell as well as on Switch I doubt it "won't sell well at all"
In reality, this probably doesn't require knowledge of the first game, and will likely be an improvement on that, so its absence probably isn't THAT big of a deal.
Just makes me wonder how bad the Xbox sales were that they completely abandoned that platform. My guess is that the original only went there because Microsoft paid them for a port + GP release, and very few Xbox owners actually ended up checking out, so Microsoft didn't make a similar deal for the second game.
Looks nice, glad for the extra hardware choices from Day 1 this time.
@IonMagi OK, but you know what hurts sales even more than people maybe choosing to buy it on Switch or PC rather than PS? Not releasing this game at all on PlayStation and providing that option.
Why they do not also launch the first game on PS systems? Never understand this decision from SE. I'm looking forward for this anyway.
@IonMagi
Trails of cold Steel started at #3 on Switch. We did not get #1 until the following year (the story actually runs from one to the next in it)
People were still excited to get it, and must have sold enough because the other ones kept coming
This is not big enough to invest in a new game and port an old one at the same time.
@Ralizah Rumor also has it that this has to do with an upcoming, yet to be announced, Square Enix acquisition with the first one being released later after everything is finalized. Not exactly my assumption but I've seen it tossed around a few times now. The fact that Xbox has no SE games scheduled for 2023 whatsoever seems to add to that. Have not looked into it personally
@Agramonte Thats probably more because the JRPG audience widely moved to the Switch since it got/gets so many exclusives. And many enjoy grinding while in bed in Handheld Mode
Getting this for sure. LOVED the first one (have it on Switch) but will def go with PS5 this time, purely becuase it will undoubtly run better on PS5.
(I rarely use the handheldmode of my Switch, I hihly prefer the big screen of my tv)
@IonMagi
Well, by your logic FF Crisis Core won't sell anything on Switch and Xbox since everybody played FF7R on PS and PC.
And unlike Crisis Core, Octopath 2 is a complete stand alone title.
@IonMagi What you do in bed with your Switch is your own business…
The mc looks like a better designed version of Noah from Xenoblade 3 lol
Game looks exactly the same as 1 but with different characters. Tho the characters seem to be also taking the exact same roles. Merchant, cleric, etc.
@TheTony316 Wdym, the original FF7 is on Xbox and Switch lol, cant really compare those
@IonMagi
The Crisis Core remake was clearly done because of FF7 Remake. The vast majority of the FF fanbase isn't on Switch and definitely not on Xbox. So why even bother with those versions?
I'm just using your logic here.
@IonMagi this second game has nothing to do with the first, it's a different story and map just like how the persona games don't follow on.
Also the jrpgs haven't moved to switch, playstation still gets way more jrpgs that the switch doesn't have, takes of Arise, scarlet nexus, FF7 remake, valkyrie elysium etc and for the jrpgs that are on the switch as well as playstation don't look as good or perform as good as the PlayStation versions.
@IonMagi
Obviously SE realized some people ok with giving up portability - why it was on PC and now PS5/PS4 also
Regardless, it does not change the point.
It be on Switch or PS - missing the first game does not seem to matter to a core group of gamers.
@IonMagi "many enjoy grinding while in bed"
Indeed.
Already sold on this game, I don't need to see anymore spoiler
The stories and writing in the first one are really quite hit and miss (and unfortunately the misses are pretty spectacular ones at that). The other problem is the complete lack of story crossover. Aside from a few party chat segments the characters may as well be completely on their own. I only skimmed the trailer but I think the second one will address that point?
Otherwise, music, combat, graphics etc are all lovely. Bet it will look awesome on PS5.
I will be getting it!
@dschons Seems unlikely to me, considering stuff like the Front Mission remakes still aren't being confirmed for platforms other than Switch. And, to be frank, Sony has likely already paid off S-E for Final Fantasy exclusivity, which seems to be pretty much all they care about. Why pay a massive chunk of money to acquire the total company when they can spend a fraction locking down the series they ACTUALLY care about?
@Ralizah I agree, it wouldn't make sense to me either. Just repeating what some people in the industry have brought up. Maybe those Switch games are older contracts being honored. I haven't looked into the matter at all, was just throwing it out there for people who might have missed that viewpoint.
@dschons Ah, OK.
I think the biggest thing for me is that people talk so much about Sony buying Square-Enix, and almost all of the actual acquisitions have seemingly come out of nowhere, right? You don't hear a ton of rumors about the real acquisitions for months and years beforehand.
@Ralizah This is exactly why I don't believe the Square Enix rumours. Almost all acquisitions that have happened are not hinted at before, just suddenly announced on social media where as people have been saying for months Sony has already done the Square Enix acquisition. Pretty sure they would have had to announce that by now and acquisitions aren't really something that are leaked compared to actual video games. More or less rumours that people say because they want it to happen.
The first one was probably my biggest switch regret. It was just too uneven.
Definitely getting this game.it looks really good.word up son
Looks beautiful but I still haven't decided whether I'll buy this on PS5 or again on the Switch.
Loved the first game but the fact each of the characters never really acknowledged each others own story when meeting up really annoyed me.
@AgentMantis Agreed. I just don't see the appeal at all. And I'm an OG SNES JRPGer.
This is a Nintendo series to me so I'll keep playing it there. The same way I feel about Mana and Dragon Quest.
@kyleforrester87 It will look just as awesome on Switch.
@__jamiie it won’t, though. Check out PC versus Switch comparisons for Octopath 1.
It’ll look good on Switch but I’ll get it for PS5, I think.
@kyleforrester87 It's not an FPS taxing game and was built for Switch hardware. It will look just as awesome and I'll be able to play both games on my Switch.
@__jamiie I mean there is reality and fantasy 🤷♂️ Clearly it won’t look “just as awesome” on both systems. But I am not disputing it will look lovely on both.
@IonMagi For sure it will sell more than it would have done on xbox.
much more XD
@Tzara I mean MS payed for the Port and they got GP money. Its not like SE cares about sales on Xbox
@IonMagi who the hell cares about sales on xbox after all?
@Blackmagehobbit @KilloWertz @IonMagi Agreed, makes no sense for them to not also be porting over the first game.
Hopefully that is addressed next year though.
