To be fair, not even the most committed Resident Evil fan would put protagonist Ethan Winters on par with the likes of Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. Perhaps we don’t have quite the same connection with the character because both his adventures, Resident Evil VII: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village, have been first-person – and that may change when the latter’s new third-person perspective launches.
Either way, the character’s storyline is coming to a conclusion. Speaking with IGN Japan, director Kento Kinoshita said that the upcoming Shadows of Rose expansion – which stars Ethan’s daughter – will “conclude the Winters family saga”. Now, when it comes to Resident Evil you obviously can’t rule out anything – but it seems the plan is to wrap things up for now. It means the next fresh entry in the franchise could feature a familiar face – or a new one entirely.
Obviously, we’ll be getting Resident Evil 4’s remake before then, and Resident Evil Village is getting a full-scale PSVR2 adaptation to boot. It means Capcom has its hands full, and therefore it has nothing to share on the future of the series right now. The good news is that Shadows of Rose is sounding like a must-own expansion, and you can of course read our impressions of the release through here from a recent preview event.

Great ride. Cant wait to see what Capcom does next, they have been on a roll with RE.
That said, I rather they go back to 3rd person.
So glad, at least RE9 will have moved on from Ethan story.
The next game must be Chris going to see why blue umbrella / the BSAA are using bow's
Thank god, Ethan might be the dullest protagonist I've ever had to deal with.
Thank goodness. Ethan Winters is up there with Aidan from Dying Light 2 as one of the most generic game protagonists in recent memory
While I enjoyed Ethans story and scary gameplay in RE7, RE8 Ethan story just felt like a random mess in comparison. Not only did they tone down the overall horror in 8 compared to 7 they also turned up the action in 8 going back to the scratching my head moments again is this a horror game or just an action game again with mild horror elements. Tbh I'll be glad they're moving away from Ethan story now and give us a new better character that's filled with far less mystery this time and someone we can truly get behind and believe in. If they are bringing back main characters from previous games like Claire, Leon, Jill or Chris then why not bring back Billy Coan from Zero or Rebecca Chambers maybe to freshen it up a bit. Horror always requires some sort of action to get through I understand this but a survival horror game should also be scary throughout. Survival horror games are truly meant to make you feel vulnerable as you play, not make me feel like an untouchable super hero with weird powers and going through millions of rounds of ammo, so stupid makes you feel just as brainless as the enemies
Ok good. Cause of the first person, i skipped these games.
I am happy they are adding 3rd person now, but i don't care about the Ethan guy and i already know what happens to him.
They should have made 3rd person for RE7 too.
I want to go back to our cool boys and girls.
That’s a bummer. Unlike everyone else, I liked Ethan as a character, being just a random person that got tied into everything. Was hoping Rose might be a new face for the series. Curious what’ll happen in the DLC.
Capcom are smashing it out the park recently. Give me ALL the Resident Evil.
Can’t wait to play this. Already have it pre-ordered.
I loved the heck out of Ethan as a character, it felt like a nice break from seeing the usual 2-4 faces in every game. I'm going to get so many quality hours of gaming from just those $20 that the dlc cost.
Finally. Couldn't care less about post RE6 stuff.
Ethan’s story was good in RE7 which felt like a more solid well put together game. But RE8 felt disjointed and a bit shoe horned in. I think if they left Ethan’s story (and the first person) with RE7 and have us play as Chris while exploring Village it would’ve been a better story and more logical.
That's unfortunate. I liked Ethan Winter.
He wasn't a trained cop or some super solider who smashes boulders for lunch.
He was humble in his abilities (at least, we were convinced that way) which made every scenario scary and menacing. I'm gonna miss that kind of feeling that the Winter's Saga has brought. A consistent sensation of being surrounded by things superior to us.
Has it been confirmed how the PSVR2 version will be delivered? (A free upgrade? paid DLC? Seperate purchase altogeter?)
Glad to hear they're wrapping up the storyline with Rose's DLC.
And hopefully the return to third person perspective in Shadows of Rose points towards an intention of switching back to it in the main entries as well. I find first person gameplay to be okay, but I've got a huge preference for third.
I bought RE8 but i'm still at first chapter. Thik i will sit on this until its on a discount
As much as I would love for the old characters to come back as a main character it just would not work. Characters like Leon and Chris are incredibly experienced and that ruins the horror aspect Capcom is trying to bring back(So far at least). If they're side characters or in DLC then I think it'll be fine.
I feel like Capcom should do away with the timeline and just keep on going with the stories. They have created loved characters with some hardly being used that need to come back. Let them carry on fighting without people questioning their ages for each new game. It’s based on fantasy, it shouldn’t be a conversation that some characters are close to retirement age.
I was hoping this was going to be a prelude to RE 9 starring Rose. A full game to wrap up the story rather than DLC.
Would like to see a more sinister approach to bio-weapons like revelations with a more CV feel.
I didn’t mind Ethan as a character. Didn’t love him or hate him. He was just there. I would like to see some of the past characters return. Maybe somebody we haven’t seen for awhile now.
This is great news, hopefully we'll get a Resident Evil 9 announcement in due time, or another spinoff entry like Revelations 3 (Outrage?).
