Need for Speed Unbound’s debut trailer has, well, debuted a couple of hours earlier than it was supposed to. The clip – as we expected from yesterday’s first screenshots – is absolutely bursting with style, with cel-shaded character models and bundles of visual effects. These stylised elements all contrast with highly realistic car models and scenery – it’s a really unique look.
The game’s due out on 2nd December, 2022 for PS5 – and it’ll be new-gen only, so there’s no PS4 version at all. “Race against time, outsmart the cops, and take on weekly qualifiers to reach The Grand, Lakeshore's ultimate street racing challenge,” the video blurb reveals. “Pack your garage with precision-tuned, custom rides and light up the streets with your style, exclusive fits, and a vibrant global soundtrack that bumps in every corner of the world.”
On the subject of the soundtrack, American rapper A$AP Rocky is in the trailer – and his song, Sh*ttin’ Me, looks like it’s going to feature heavily throughout. What are your thoughts, then? This is the most personality a Need for Speed game has had in over a decade – but we suspect it’s going to prove divisive among franchise fans.

Looks absolutely sick!!! We need more Arcade racers
This is looking brilliant!
Exceeded my expectations for sure, def there day one as always!
Looks pretty slick visually, but rarely do these games do anything special in terms of gameplay. I hope this one is different.
I think NFS Most Wanted is still the best in the series.
I like it, has a Jet Set NFS vibe 👌
Looks to be absolutely dripping in style hopefully has the substance to match! Could be great!
I like the style. I probably won't get it at launch but I'll gladly see more.
Nailed the visual style but hopefully the driving model will be good as well.
Day one for me. Looks awesome.
Looks great! Still waiting for remasters of Underground 1 & 2 though
hopefully i can turn those horrendous effects off.
wont pay 70, sale probably worth it.
Hmmm I’m liking this. I don’t really like the jumping effects but the rest looks cool!
Looks like the art team were influenced by 'Into the Spider-verse'
Looked better than I expected. I'll probably wait for reviews and actual game footage before committing to buying it.
JK! I'm totally buying it!
just have to wait until the games out . not convinced
That looks amazing! Haven't seen this much style in 'realistic' AAA games since the early 2000's ...Hoping it becomes a trend! Not everything has to strive for hyper realism, especially when things that are heavily stylised age so much better. Just look at Wind Waker for instance ...Very divisive at first but aged like fine wine compared to any realistic graphics from that era.
The visual style is really interesting, like it a lot. Haven’t played a NFS game since Underground 2 though!
Sorry but not my thing. Old school Need for Speed for me with decent story, open world and no cartoon elements.
I'll wait for more gameplay footage, just in case.
This looks proper tasty, getting some serious Into the Spider-verse vibes from it, which is definitely a good thing.
Not a huge fan of the edgy style, just feels it's trying far too hard, but at least it's different, which is interesting.
"The game’s due out on 2nd December, 2022 for PS5 – and it’ll be new-gen only, so there’s no PS4 version at all"
Worth buying for this reason alone
Yah the cartoon wannabe urban elements, the crap rapper cameos, the characters pretending playing with cars with puff jackets and dyed hair,... it's just so cringe.
I appreciate the effort but it's not a great first showing for me here. It looks like yet another attempt at a racer trying to hard to gloss over mediocrity with cringy in between race filler. The voice overs and all the flashy nonsense never make up for mediocrity in gameplay in these efforts which have all been done before.
Granted, the trailer really showed very little of actual racing gameplay, so who knows. If you can skip the garbage cut scenes and turn off the comic book effects slapped over the actual game visuals maybe it will be worth a go. However to me this screams micro transactions/live service trash targeting the young brainwashed drones of society.
Atleast it looks different from previous games, which is something. Still the gameplay better deliver or otherwise its all for nothing.
@Member_the_game then damage potentially good visuals with marker pen anime graffiti thing.
dodgy characters, handling, story is all fine because thats NFS style. but these visuals, just no, not for 70
The Fast and The Furious 10: Rap Stars, They Only Come Out at Night
Looks pretty cool, and I like that they're trying something new.
Was never a fan of the handling and feel of NFS games in general though, so unless they change that (unlikely) it probably isn't for me.
Haven't played a Need for Speed game since Underground 2 and a bit of Carbon, but this kinda has me curious!... albeit not at full price though. Personally liking the artstyle.
@stvevan
I've never paid £70 for any game to be fair and probably never will. Always pays to hold off a little while
Just as an example FIFA 23 launched last week for £70. I've just bought it today less than a week later for £59.99 in Smyth's
@sketchturner this is the first NFS game since Most Wanted on the 360 that has even caused me to glance in it's direction. This looks SLICK AF.
I want to like this. Feel like it's going back to the Underground days and those games were absolute bangers! But I'm not convinced just yet. I'll reserve judgment until we get some extended gameplay, but I'm really not a fan of the art style and I outright hate A$AP's cameo.
@Member_the_game
it 55 on both base.com and thegamecollection. for me fifa is a black Friday sale game.
nfs out in dec? yep another Jan sales to add to my list
This actually looks like it could be fun. The inclusion of A$AP Rocky seals the deal, 'Shittin Me' is a most finely crafted musical piece, with truly insightful, touching lyrics.
Absolutely all over this. Looking forward to see if they deliver the hype they just made
Not usually a NFS guy but damn that trailer looked sick. This may just be my first NFS since most wanted.
I'm caustiously optimistic this NFS will be good because of criterion developing
It might be brilliant. It might be stupid. I can't tell.
I don't think that trailer told me much of anything about the game itself. I don't care about most of what they seemed to focus on in the trailer - I care what gameplay looks like. Show me two or three minutes of actual gameplay, and then I'll know if I'm getting excited or shaking my head.
I think I played all the NFS games last gen and really enjoyed them all. Don't think I ve finished any as I always seem to suck at drifting racing/challenges lol. So yeah will probably eventually pick this up.
@Member_the_game FIFA are even to expensive at €60.
The background and the rap music is something have in every other NFS game so thats not something new. The looks are new but besides that nothing else.
@Flaming_Kaiser
Debatable depending on you're level of disposable income
This has wait for a sale shouting at me..i'll wait until i can pick this up really cheap as it just dosnt look that great. I think somebody has been watching too much spiderman into the web verse thingy doo dah and looks to be aimed at the cool kids more than the escort xr3i generation..
The visuals look slick, asap on the soundtrack, offline campaign and crossplay. Man we might finally be in a for a good ride, already liked Heat but this might be genre changing with the visuals. Looks so dope.
Not a fan tbh suppose I'll download it on pc when it's cracked to try it
If they were going to get a rapper to do a cameo they should've got snoopy snoopy dog dog riders on the storms my favourite track from all the nfs games
@OM1993 need for speed 2015 felt like underground to me I just wish they'd added more cars & more events like drag races & most of all the ability to play it offline
@Would_you_kindly I never played the 2015 one tbh, but you're right actually. 2015 did look Underground-ish. The car list did seem a bit barren, and yes, I think the online focus was one of the main reasons why I never purchased it. I will be giving Unbound a go in November, a 10 hpur trial will be made available on Game Pass via EA Play. Thinking it best to get hands on with it and give it a proper bash before I properly make up my mind on it.
@OM1993 I wouldn't of bought it either if idve known about the online requirement but I was oblivious till I'd bought it , still really enjoyed it but I hope they patch in an offline update before they shut down the servers
Can we swap the soundtrack? I'm one of those people who think rap is a four-letter word (the c is silent).
@Member_the_game Im looking at the effort put in a game and the amount of MT and in EA's case gambling.
This is criterion. If they’re anything like their old selves, this’ll be one of the best arcade racers of all time, and much much better than recent entries
Be full of micro transactions
Probably have to to pay for the effects
@itsfoz Same thoughts here, the game needs a decent story and designed to be single player for me to even consider playing.
Good to see they're trying their own thing rather than chasing Forza Horizon.
This giving me super underground vibes and the art Styles cel shade a nice touch
Hmm. I dont think this is being targeted at my demographic.
That's what I do respect about this hobby; so diverse.
Customization is back, the art style looks like Street Fighter 6, not humans but cars. I need to see the gameplay first. I love NFS games, I enjoyed playing NFS Heat.
If Criterion can bring back some of their Burnout magic, then this could be amazing!
I still will be waiting for any classic (1994-2002) NFS remake, but, meanwhile, as fan of arcade racing games (unique tracks, civil traffic or hazard environment, and hot pursuits) as Asphalt, Burnout and Test Drive; and NFS fan, I will give a opportunity to Unbound; specially because Criterion is involved.
