Developer Team NINJA has announced that the combined sales of both Nioh and Nioh 2 have exceeded more than seven million units worldwide. Perhaps the most successful Soulslike competitor on the market, the Nioh series combines mechanics popularised in FromSoftware's Dark Souls franchise with a fantastical, feudal Japanese setting, and is arguably even more difficult. For comparison, the Dark Souls trilogy has shipped a combined 28 million units across each release and subsequent re-releases.
It's an impressive milestone, and the future is looking bright for Team NINJA, with the excellent-looking Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty on the horizon, releasing on 3rd March, 2023. If you haven't tried it for yourself, Nioh 2 will be available as a part of the PlayStationsPlus Essential lineup in November.

Nioh 1 and 2 are great games by one of my favourite developers. Really looking forward to Wo Long aswell, but skipped the demo as I wanted to go in blind
Nice figure for a niche game. Plus the check they got from Sony to put the first one on it's services, I don't know about the second one tho, since Sony was the publisher
Only played the first one for a bit but what I played was fantastic! Never got back to it but glad the series has done so well!
@SamMR Sony was The Publisher For Both Of Them.
Haven’t played 2 but 1 was an excellent experience. It wears the Soul inspiration very abundantly but I found the speed of combat made it exhilarating and empowering to play. Fighting Yokai as an Irish Geralt in feudal Japan is something that needs to be seen to be believed.
No surprises there Nioh is incredible Team Ninja are one of the best developers of all time. I'm actually playing Nioh 2 right now gonna take a bit of a break to focus on the Resi DLC at the moment though
I find Nioh games better than Dark souls games.
I am a fan indeed. FromSoftware's combat is incredibly boring to me, so Team Ninja does what I want in the genre.
Well deserved! I’ve still only played the first one, which I loved… but bought Nioh 2 on PS4 day one, then bought the PS5 Collection on its release day too. Although I haven’t made a start on the sequel yet… it’s one of those ‘I’m saving it for a rainy day’ situations.
@Areus Only on Console tho. PC was self-published
Congratulations team ninja.one of my favorite developers right now.and ever.i 💚ve nioh games. Im playing nioh 2 right now and i bought the season pass.im on level 108.extremely fun game.one of my favorite games ever.and series ever.word up son
Absolutely love the Nioh series. Must play games the pair of them. I personally prefer them to Soulsbourne. The camera is a lot better in the Nioh games, and the load times are significantly shorter (at least comparatively on PS4). Both of which make for an equally punishing but much more enjoyable playing experience.
Well deserved!
I would like to see a return to William though. Character creator is nice but you lose something in the story.
Perhaps start with William & then unlock character creation in NG+/The Way of... .
Wonder if this was the reason for them to add Nioh 2 to PS Plus, as a way to celebrate this milestone.
Played about an hour maybe of the first one, got to some big Knight thing, died, never went back to it. None of the souls likes appeal to me really.
I love ninja gaiden, always felt it was tough as nails but was fair and I much prefer the speed and movement but it never felt overwhelming.
I'd be surprised if Sony aren't looking at purchasing TN/KT though after the exclusive rpg comes.
Thanks, Team Ninja and Sony. The Nioh games are awesome. Hopefully, there's a Nioh 3 someday.
Will Team Ninja join PlayStation Studios or must they continue proving their worth. They've earned it many times over by now.
I couldn't get into it. I got the collection for PS5 for Christmas last year and I just lost interest in Nioh after a while. I didn't bother with Nioh 2.
Enemy variation was seemingly non-existent, the loot mechanic is terrible, bosses were lackluster, and level design is kind of boring. It just started feeling more like a chore than an enjoyable experience.
Still, congrats to Team Ninja for the accomplishment - I am glad it found a strong audience even if I am not a part of it.
My absolute favorite new franchise from the amazing PS4 generation. I am so ecstatic to hear this great news, truly well deserved for the developer and publisher.
This was actually the series that finally had be understand how "souls-type" games work and why they are intricate, demanding, and so much fun at the same time. It made me a fan of the genre and I have been playing as many "souls-type" games as I can since.
Prior to Nioh the only game in this genre I played was Demon's Souls on PS3 and I could not get into it or understand it at the time. Since Nioh, I went back to it and beat it, one of my great recent memories.
But Nioh is great, yes, oh and Sony and Koei Tecmo, if you are reading this, make Nioh 3. Please and thank you.
Loved nioh and getting nioh 2 on plus is the icing on the cake. Happy for team ninja well done
Nice!! Loved the second one. Combat is snappier than souls games to me.
Great games so I've been told! I plan to attempt them eventually.
