In The Last of Us: Part II, new character Abby Anderson was introduced early on, and in dramatic fashion. The amount of focus placed on the deuteragonist proved controversial with some players, but despite it all, Abby's voice actress and prolific portrayer, Laura Bailey, would be eager to revisit the character in a potential sequel.
In an interview with Comic Book Movie, Bailey reflects on the lasting impact the role had on both her life and career, noting that "I would definitely go back to her. I know there was a lot of drama and response to her character, but it was one of the most influential roles I’ve had in my life."
Speculation abounds as to whether or not a third entry in the series is in the offing, although we would be shocked if developer Naughty Dog chose never to revisit this world in some fashion or another. There is still so much to be explored and so many stories left untold. Bailey certainly agrees, and on the subject of the upcoming HBO adaptation, said that "the series looks amazing and I cannot wait to see more of it."
Do you think we will see The Last of Us: Part III someday? Do you think Abby will return? Speculate wildly in the comments section below.

As someone who likes part two, I hope not. Abby is a pretty dull character.
As someone who liked the 1rst game and finds the second one very mediacore in every way, no I don't want to see a 3rd game, better ND move on a new ip.
While I want a LoU part 3 someday, i hope Naughty Dog work on a new ip first. PS4 generation was the first time we'd not seen a new ip from them, so it would be good to keep things fresh.
Not going to dwell on any negativity for part 2 - personally it was in my top 3 games for PS4 - other than to say i trust ND to come up with a compelling reason if they want to revisit Abby. It felt like her story (and Ellie's) had been told - so they may want to explore a new character.
Either way, im sure ND will make something brilliant
Hell NO!!! Dont ruin the first part anymore. Done enough damage with part 2.
As a massive fan of both games I'd love to see it...... a bit.
TBH, unless they start afresh with new characters (and then it just wouldn't be TLOU) it's hard to see where they could take it.
A prequel of sorts showing those missing 20 years from the beginning of the first game would be a winner, but I imagine that would likely be covered by the upcoming series.
Maybe the series would provide something we haven't seen and could be a springboard for a new instalment of the game?
First two are gonna be a hard act to follow, no matter what.
I wouldn't really be interested at all at this point. If ND makes another TLOU they should take a page out of Hideo Kojima's book and make a prequel game or a game that takes place in a different country. China, Japan, or Korea could be pretty cool.
Maybe come back to Abby for TLOU 4 if ever. She isn't a fun character, and she is also just really has a bland personality. Didn't care all that much for her at all.
Part 2 was a masterpiece, but lost some of the warmth present in their other games, which made me feel less engaged with and absorbed in the game. TLOU2 really is an amazing achievement and a real Magnus opus of conflicting moralities, but I loved the camaraderie and togetherness of battling for good and the singularity of purpose of achieving a righteous goal in part 1 and the uncharted games.
Joel was a flawed character, but the resolving of his internal pain and his growing and eventually unshakeable parental love for Ellie was wonderful to see unfold in part 1 and made us look past his gruff exterior & see something much deeper in him. That added huge depth to his character in a heartfelt and evolving theme rather than making him so conflicted you couldn’t really fully like or relate to him. And for me, relating to a character is what makes me engage and feel absorbed in a game. Abby just wasn’t that for me.
That feel-good aspect of the singularity of purpose in the face of adversity is what I love about their games. I guess they thought that aspect had been played out, which I totally understand, but I hope they go back to that underlying principle and seek to expand their narrative in other ways.
Irrespective of everything, I feel sad at the hate the studio has received. Gaming would be a poorer place without their peerless mastery and delivery of some of the best adventure games ever made. I think we should be grateful for that and criticism should be respectful and constructive in the spirit of appreciation for what they’ve done.
I won't argue with anyone who dislikes the game, or the character, but I just want to share my own experience, as I totally changed my mind about Part II.
When I played it for the first time, at launch, I totally hated it. It was a game that infuriated me like no other game, nor piece or art, has. I was (and still am) so fan of the first episode that I rejected everything they tried with this one. I was hallucinating on what I understood being the message of the game ("Violence is wrong") and on the ways to make me understand this big lesson in life (forcing me to kill everyone, even when I didn't want to). I finally sold the game to my local store, keeping the first one and rejected PART II of my head-canon.
And now. Years later. I bought, as the stupid fanboy as I am, PART I Remake. First game I played on my brand new PS5 (yeah!). And I could'nt help myself and stop there, so I bought a new copy of PART II, and played them back to back.
And... I don't know if it's due to the fact that this time, I knew exactly what to expect, but I freaking LOVED it.
I changed my mind about it. The critics I could formulate at the time are still there, off course. But... I don't know. I guess I understood better the grand despair that ravages every single one of these great characters.
Replaying Part I made me better understand Part II, in a way. There was no moral, even in the first one. The world is doomed, and Joel himself, even before the end, is doing permanently things that can be morally debated.
I still understand people who despise Part II, I respect their opinions. But as far as I'm concerned, I have grown to be equally fan of this episode.
The Last of Us: Part II: Part II, eh? Yeah I'd play it, though to be honest the only characters from Abby's story I liked were Lev and his sister. It was a strange choice to devote so much of the game to playing as the bad guys.
Some of these comments... Just wow
Anyway I thought Part 2 was better in every way conceivable and I would love to see more Abby in a part 3.
@TheDarkSide I would like a 3rd game just to know Ellie turns out ok. The way the 2nd game ended left me worried for her and like a worried parent I need to know she's not out there suffering.
@riceNpea I totally understand the feeling.
The thing with this kind of opened ending is that you can interpret whatever suits you. Speaking for myself, I like to imagine her back to their city, with everyone else, back to Dina and to their kid.
But maybe she just ran off in the woods, all alone.
Why do people want to see Ellie again, she sets out in a rampage and ultimately fails at finishing, at least abby did her job..got her revenge and so on, part 2 is a great game, I hope part 3 comes and starts with Abby taken out Ellie!!
I hope we get a sequel with Abby and I hope lot's more Last of us games are coming. You can do prequels, sequels, new storylines in the last of us universe. There's so much potential in world of the last of us! ***** the haters!
@Bobobiwan I feel your pain. I started off hating part 2. Then I hated Abby. Then I hated myself for finding some empathy for Abby! 😵
Second playthrough was easier. I'd been made immune to the trauma by then. lol.
Actually agree with the recent article on here saying part 2 is the better game, but it'd be nothing without part 1.
The original though is, and always will be, something special.
Never been as profoundly affected by a game as I was by that.
Masterpiece. 👍
@riceNpea Me too, but I'm kinda scared to find out. 😂
Mr Druckmann does like to punch us in the feels.
@Uromastryx SPOILER ALERT
In the end Ellie saved Abby's life. She isn't going after Ellie anymore. Those two are done with each other. That's a fact. But I do want to see what's going on with Abby and Ellie. But maybe we get a prequel first. Remember, after mgs 2, we got mgs 3, a prequel. Last of us part 2 was heavily inspired by mgs 2. And that game also was very controversial. Either way I want more Last of us games!
No sequel please, time to change it up and maybe focus on a different group of people, go back to the start of the virus outbreak, maybe show how the firefly's started etc
@Bobobiwan the way things were left with Dina I worry that won't be the case. Ellie burnt so many bridges and is still full of despair from losing Joel, even if the anger has subsided somewhat.
@BossBE that's possible, there's one thing fir sure, there will definitely be more last if us games, no doubt about that, ain't gonna leave that golden cow in the corner of the field !
Yes please. She should travel back in time and assassinate Joel before he ruined so many lives.
I'd love to see this studio re visit this world. Both titles are exemplary pieces of work and it would be fantastic to see another.
Some of these comments are ridiculous. I loved part 2, it’s up there with my favourite games and I really liked Abby as a character and I’d love to see her story continued.
@Bobobiwan amazing, thanks for the input. I might do that back to back playthrough when I get part 1 😀
I get Part 2 was controversial and had it's detractors but I for one quite liked the plot and can give credit for a sequel that was different and took some major risks. We might not see a third one for a while but we do know for a fact there already exists a finished script for a third game.
I liked Abby actually. I generally liked TLOU2 as well. The thing that held it back most from being as good as the original for me was the support cast. In a hypothetical 3rd game though that wouldn't be a problem since pretty much all but three support characters didn't make it in 2. They could come up with a fresh batch of support characters which would be perfectly welcome.
Though Lev can go. Sorry that character did nothing for me. 😄
@Milktastrophe
In your eyes they are bad guys.
In their eyes Joel is bad guy.
So no you dont play as bad guys.
I enjoyed both TLOU 1 + 2. I'd love to see a third entry. I really enjoyed the gameplay, characters and the diversity in 2. I really grew to like Abby's character and would love to see her character again. Maybe in a stand alone game? Another group of characters could be interesting though. I'm definitely up for being in that world again.
The hate for Abby is ridiculous and childish. If it crosses over into "I'm not playing it if she's in it" or anything of the similar sentiment, then yeah, ridiculous and childish.
It's a game and story, people. It's not life and death.
I'm fine with that as long as she dies in the first act ,preferably at the hands of a character ive never seen or who has never been mentioned before ,thats a cool idea
@MattBoothDev but she killed pappi Joel and shall never be forgiven
Will Abby finally open her heart to her lover? Will monsters have sentiments of love too? Will love overcome jealousy? You’ll know everything in TLOU 3 ! Lol
i think we will see a third game but I'd rather see a new IP and a new Uncharted. I enjoyed Part 2 but nowhere close to the same level as Part 1. So I think Part 3 will only drop lower than Part 2. It's not the same without Joel.
It could be possible to see Abby again. Perhaps in the next game it could see Ellie and Abby having to work together to survive
fantastic she was really good i hated that character lol but i like the actress. looking forward to more!
As somebody who hated the story, with Abby being a major reason why, I'd be less excited for a Part III if she was in it. I understand why the character was introduced and such, but actually playing as her should have been DLC. It completely ruined the experience for me, especially the part where you have to fight Ellie. I bought the game to play as Ellie, not fight against her. I honestly almost dropped the game because I really didn't want to do that.
I'm with other people though. Even though I wouldn't mind a better Part III, a new IP first is a must. Between the upcoming Factions 2, the Part 1 remake, and the Legacy of Thieves Collection, Naughty Dog has been stuck on the same old stuff.
@jrt87 Nope, I wasn't lying. And it wasn't genius. It was forcing me to do something I truly didn't want to do. Again, I bought the game to play as Ellie and experience her part of the story, not play as Abby. It would have been fine as DLC. I would have understood that. The game itself from a gameplay and technical perspective was great, but I hated the story. Oh well.
As someone who enjoyed playing through part 2, NO THANK YOU!
The game itself should be put to rest for a long while, we need new IPs please and thank you
@ScepticDK Well, you said more good words for it than I would have
@Neverwild it was established in the finale of part one that the fireflies are actually baddies.
@Old-Red totally. All I could keep thinking was when will this part end and get back to Ellie!
Only if she gets killed off as soon as they game starts.
PS6 launch title 🙃
I have 0 desire to play as Ellie or Abby again. If they want to do a new story with new characters and location, fine. Otherwise, I will probably skip it until it’s dirt cheap.
Removed - trolling/baiting
Really loved TLOU 2 but honestly want to see Naughty Dog working on a new IP that’s going to show off the PS5 tech with some new characters we can connect with again like we did Ellie, Joel, and Abby. Give us a surprise!
You know what ruïned it for the ***** that spoiled the a big story point that what ruïned the game for me and i still see people writing it down.
If you read movie reviews people dont spoil the movie either but with games its a different beast. For me gamers a lot of times are the worst kind of little babies that cant handle that others like something.
And just ruin the game by putting spoilers everywhere even in the first few days and even on other reviews.
TLoU Part 2 literally made me lose interest in modern gaming. Like, it was so bad I didn't turn my PlayStation on again for a solid month after completing it. I'd be keen to try and fix it as well.
@MattBoothDev are you using "children" and "loons" as euphemisms for "people I disagree with?"
@jrt87 100%
Love or hate part 2 ND needs to make something else already, we really going to go two generations without a new ip from them?
They released Part I remaster this year and we will probably get Part II PS5 remaster soon, they also are making the multiplayer game and now maybe Part 3?
Is that as far as their talents can take them, making tlou games till the end of time? They said they are working on a new ip but I've heard that since TLOU remastered debuted on the PS4, let's see hopefully they do show off something that isn't tlou soon. 🤞
I'm hoping they can at least give us 1440p at a buttery smooth 30fps.
On a serious note I liked Abby, I liked her more than Ellie. I really liked Joel as a character but I think he was wrong for saving her.
Ellie became an unsympathetic character to me in the second game.
@GreatAuk “buttery smooth”
“30fps”
pick one 😂😂
@liljazzy2 no, I'm using it to describe the people acting like children and/or lunatics in the comments section.
You yourself said it "ruined gaming" for you? It's a videogame, for christ's sake. A story line you didn't like nearly ruined gaming for you? It's an absolutely ridiculous thing to say.
I'll repeat again:
The hate for Abby is ridiculous and childish. If it crosses over into "I'm not playing it if she's in it" or anything of the similar sentiment, then yeah, ridiculous and childish.
It's a game and story, people. It's not life and death.
Would prefer a new set of characters in the Last of Us universe, Walking Dead style. Abbie is not an interesting character at all.
Sony will have a 3rd game made with out doubt. 2nd game done too well for them to ignore.
I hope not I would rather have a new IP
