There’ll be no physical version of Monster Hunter Rise when it launches on PS5 and PS4 early next year. The port of the critically acclaimed Nintendo Switch and PC release was hastily announced last week, following a series of leaks. However, physical fans may need to curb their enthusiasm, as publisher Capcom has confirmed to Gematsu there’ll be no boxed copies on PlayStation platforms. This means you’ll need to download the title from the PS Store.
Of course, with the enormous Sunbreak expansion not due out until Spring 2023, our guess is that a Complete Edition will launch physically later in the year. Therefore, we’d recommend you sit tight for a few months if you’d prefer to own the game on Blu-ray.

Welp I know someone who would wait till there is a disc version. But it's not me. Still I hope there will be physical Edition eventually. As for me: "I'm going Digital, completely Digital." If you know, you know.
See when I see things like this, I can't help but wonder....if there is no disc being manufactured, do I really have to wait a month to play. Just release it now. I play Bethesda games, bugs are fine.
@Cutmastavictory it makes me wonder if this was really a reaction to Wild Hearts. Cause why not just wait 3 more months and launch with Sunbreak included?
Well its wait for sale for me then
Going to be intriguing to see how many games follow suit over the next 2 years
Cool, I’ll just not play it then. Plenty of other games to play.
luckily its 33 so physical wouldnt be much cheaper.
should have gone on plus really
To me this just means a 300% price increase or so. Which means that, if I were to be considering getting the game…I now wouldn’t be.
As the years go by these 'AAA' companies just get more and more lazy.
Wish more games would do this. Physical manufacturing and real world transport logistics is such a wasteful and inferior method of distribution. Hopefully legislation can make it more difficult for physical games to be made and sold in future. With that thogh, I'd like to see the potential of a secondary market to sell and transfer gamed, with some restrictions.
@PlayStationGamer3919 u really like destroying the environment just so u can get a physical copy of a game u know we need to cut back on plastic
lol at all these people cutting off their noses to spite their faces.
they'll be the same ones refusing to give up petrol cars in ten years time for those rubbish EV's that the rest of the planet will be driving, the same ones who were refusing to give up candles for that new-fangled electricity thing back in the day.
digital is coming, discs are going. people can p*** into the wind all the want.
It's a shame and definitely feels like Capcom just rushed this out for whatever reason. A complete physical edition might happen but I don't want to wait for that if
I really want to add this to my rotation of games to play when I don't feel like playing my main game so its still a day 1 for me
I’ll play it through gamepass but still, this is super lame. Such a successful franchise not releasing physically seems like a missed opportunity.
No disc, no buy.
@C25CLOUD The worst culprits are the youtube goons who like to show off the physical collection, all with the shrink wraps still on, never played and buy the digital anyway lol
They should honestly charge less if it's digital only, even $5 less, considering they don't need to print the discs, make the boxes/design, ship to stores. If they are gonna cut out the middle man, I want to see savings on our end as well!
@Sequel
We need legislation to prevent physical games? Of all things in the world right now? Push Square, everyone. God save us all.
When you say ps4 and ps5, you make it sound like playstation only, only to find out it's the same for xbox too.
Well it sxcks that there's no physical, but at least you can rent it.
That's honestly a deal breaker for me.
@Sequel the bad thing about digital games is that you don't actually own it. If you lose your account, your game is gone too. But physical, its yours as long as you have the disc.
Physical over digital. I bought God of War for 75 bucks. Beat it. Sold it for 60. Can I do that with digital?
I’ll likely just play this on Game Pass anyways.
@CutchuSlow yea I hate those headlines that “needlessly” slap platform names in the headline, but Search Engine Optimization is important for them. Articles like this, it can make it sound like a given platform is the only one being shafted, though.
Game Pass sounds really good for this game.
Well, that's a bummer.
Also, no cross-saves and cross-progression between PS4 and PS5 isn't good considering it's available across Xbox and Windows platforms.
@NomNom they are charging less
Well bad for those that like to sell/buy second hand games. I can’t be arses to buy physical and change discs, digital all the way.
The game is great, but 2 bad decisions. No physical and no crossplatform play or save.
@CutchuSlow seeing mhw did not have it and seeing switch and PC can't play together I think we already know by now we were not getting cross play.
@Smiffy01 I know all that waste on the planet
@Sequel
Sure, if games can be traded and sold in the same way as physical i would go all digital without a doubt. As it is though, I’m not paying multiple times the price of a second hand physical game on a new digital version. The price difference is just insulting.
I would love to get the game physical (and I mean the actual content, not a 150mb installer-ish file to download the rest of the game), but here in the Slums where I currently live, a physical game costs even more than the digital version at full price. And I am dead serious, DB:Kakarot is around USD80 when you can get the digital version at USD18 from the PS store.
@C25CLOUD " u really like destroying the environment just so u can get a physical copy of a game u know we need to cut back on plastic"
Good thing the magic 'cloud' running 24/7 doesn't use any energy.
@C25CLOUD Atleast the servers run on air and don't come to me with your environment crying. You have kids, you go on holiday with by airplane, you eat meat?
Lets be honest im not a digital only fan and i will skip it without a second thought.
@C25CLOUD
MHW is an old game and came out before cross play was common. MHR is a new game. They could have implemented cross play, but they chose not to. They did however make it cross play between windows/xbox store on PC and xbox consoles. Or so I hear. So that's good news.
@Crabbitsteve yeah. But with the disc or certificate, you are guaranteed to continue to play the game even if the store shuts down. They can shut down the store whenever they want. They almost did it with the PS3. I think they shut down the wii u store and the ds store. I've also lost many digital games I bought on PC. Before I knew about steam. That was years ago tho.
Glad I got it on Switch as prefer a physical. I do think it's ridiculous as World sold well why wouldn't Rise and I assume with Sunbreak? What is with Capcom are they that lazy to bother. Did PC not make it sell well for them and have a dumb reason as to why it wouldn't be physical on consoles?
Hopefully they don't give a cardboard disk like Ducktales Remastered on PS3 before a real physical after as digital physical (code in a case) is just dumb.
If it was Wii U I'd get it but PS3? Every time I see that Scott the Woz video it always confused me. Or a download code at retail later and do make it actually digital only on the PSN/Xbox Stores than 'digital' but pointless physical case and code retail presence (at least in the US I've not seen it with Switch or past digital physical on older gen systems as I don't own or seen the games that were effected by it as they weren't of interest to me but I assume a similar banner or mention exists).
No one needs a cardboard disk or the awkward ways they handled other Capcom games on Switch with 1 game on the card and the rest downloads to also happen on PS5/Series/PS4/Xbox One out of pure laziness.
Wow...Imagine being so entitled to a disc (plastic), that you won't play the game. Individuals like you lot, need to get over yourselves and stop acting like it's the end of the world. I can't believe people even get so emotional about stuff like this lol Deal with it.
@paulbuck1996 @3Above I'll be waiting for the inevitable physical Complete edition myself, in no hurry to play the game!
Now if only I could get a full refund on the Switch copy I ordered from GameStop a few months ago.
@Crabbitsteve every game I had, had the game on the disc.
Your paying 60 plus to rent a game on digital, you own the game if its on a disk, unless its an online game, then once again your on their time and dime and own nothing. Digital uses up just as many resources destroying the world, and cuts thousands of jobs in the process. Pros and cons to it all, but if you push for digital you might have to buy it more than once or lose it forever.
