Update: A new patch for Dead Space’s PS5 remake is now available to download, and it completely eradicates a bug which was previously affecting the release’s visuals. The game now looks and performs as intended, so if you're playing the sci-fi horror, make sure you get the update downloaded and installed.
EA is plotting a patch for Dead Space’s otherwise acclaimed PS5 remake which will fix a resolution scaling issue. Fans on Reddit spotted the title’s image quality would take an unprecedented dip in select situations, ruining the visuals. Many believe this bug is a fault of Virtual Super Resolution – a technology which enables a release to render at higher resolutions before being downscaled to a typical display – and was introduced with the title’s v1.000.002 patch, as it wasn’t occurring as aggressively prior.
“The team is working on a patch that will improve the issue on PS5,” a spokesperson wrote on the series’ official Reddit page. “[There’s] no ETA quite yet, but I’ll keep you all updated. Thank you for your patience as well as your help with identifying this issue!”
Obviously, these kind of issues can occur, but it’s disappointing to see the launch weekend of an otherwise excellent game disrupted by such a silly bug. If you purchased a physical copy, you could try playing unpatched for the time being – otherwise, you may just have to wait until the update is out. It’s an annoying situation, no doubt, but these things happen from time to time.

Exactly why its never a great idea to be a day one player/bug tester.
You mean VRS variable rate shading what's causing the problems
Graphics are great but there is definitely a blur on the screen that makes things look jaggy at times for me
I haven't played much as I've been trying to get the buggy Deadpool trophies on Midnight Suns to pop.
'Member when games were released in a decent state without the need for tons of patches to fix them?'?
'Member when you didn't need a patch to fix a patch?
Yeah. I 'member....
I haven’t noticed anything terrible so far. The game looks and plays great. I’ve missed this franchise.
I honestly haven't seen that issue yet but sucks to happen. The only thing close to it I've seen is whenever you're in a tram or an elevator I notice the resolution go down on Isaac's armor but that's trivial. So far through the first 3 chapters I haven't noticed any major bugs or crashing. Very impressed by the stability of the launch.
Yeah, it’s Variable Rate Shading (not super resolution) causing the issue. Digital Foundry has been talking about it since release. It’s worst on PS5 so they were recommending Series X on console.
I am currently on chapter 5, and the game looks gorgeous to me. Smooth framerate, and the 3D audio sounds great. No glitches or crashes either. I'm playing on an LG C1 oled, so inky blacks galore!
Looks really low resolution for me and I'm playing on ps5 on the sony inzone m9 monitor
Wish they’d fix the article to the correct reason. It’s Variable Rate Shading. Definitely NOT Variable Super Resolution.
Yeah VRS and not VSR is at fault, hopefully they fix it soon and give PC players the option to turn it off, as many of us don't need or want it
I am glad i stoped preordering games. I may have them later but in better quality for less price
@Party_Cannon I member the good old days. Games released finished without bugs and people could talk and write properly. Now everyone's so lazy they just don't give a hit.
No one at the studio played the final build of the game before release. I love how Sammy put "plotting" in the title lol.
@get2sammyb John Linneman from Digital Foundry has been talking for days about how it’s VRS (Variable Rate Shading) that is causing the issue on PS5. Not Virtual Super Resolution. Here’s a post with images showing the issue with VRS on PS5.

@Darth_Stofi buying at launch is the new preorder at this rate
I ****ING knew it! I knew it. The game looks really really bad at times.
Maybe I notice it more because of my career, but oh boy were the muddy textures and jagged edges on the enviroment and models very noticeable. Looked like YouTube compression.
As others have said, it's actually the PS5s software based variable rate shading. The xbox version doesn't seem as badly effected as the xbox series consoles have hardware based vrs, and the ps5 does not. One of the missing "features" on the ps5, along with mesh shaders I believe
@Smiffy01 I buy roughly 5 games a year day one and have never had a single issue like this because I buy games by developers and publishers that don’t treat customers like Guinea pigs.
@Jeanhenry They didn’t release finished at all. There were literally hundreds of shovelware titles.
Difference was we just bought them anyway.
It desperately needs patched asap. I’m playing it on Series X and it looks absolutely terrible, looks more like an early Xbox One/PS4 game. As others have said it’s got muddy low res textures and it just doesn’t look good at any point in the game even with performance mode off. I’ve seen remasters that look better than this “remake”.
@Sakai Nonsense, PS5 has custome VRS & mesh shaders in hardware
@marty8370 it doesn't. Digital Foundry have just released a video on Dead Space and it mentions PS5s software based vrs.
@PenguinLtd initially I didn't notice either. It was after a few elevator rides that I noticed the image quality was very bad and low res. From then on, I noticed it everywhere 😭
@Smiffy01 One of the reasons why I usually never pre-order games.
@ItsBritneyB_tch The visual issues are there but the game is so good & immersive that its easy to overlook.
@MaccaMUFC So it's a real problem not only a Playstation problem I guess? I don't understand how they miss these kind of issues.
@Flaming_Kaiser I’ve certainly noticed that it doesn’t look as it should but others on Xbox have been saying they think it’s fine but it’s really not though. I was just on it a couple of hours ago and didn’t see any update for it, it’s a bit too late for me now anyway as I’m at the end of Chapter 10 which is close to the end of the game.
@MaccaMUFC It's a pity i think I'll wait a little longer to get it.
@Nepp67 that's the only thing I noticed, but that is fixed now, I noticed yesterday on the tram the resolution stayed normal
