A Warner Bros support page has revealed Hogwarts Legacy will include two different graphical modes on PS5: one will run at 30 frames-per-second while the other "targets" 60fps. In addition, if your TV supports the feature, you will be able to utilise variable refresh rates. This is only for the PS5 version, with the edition releasing for PS4 yet to be dated.
"The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S console versions of Hogwarts Legacy support multiple graphical modes of play, the most common of which are Fidelity mode which runs at 30 fps, and Performance mode which targets 60 fps," reads the support page. It then explains how you'll need a compatible TV to activate VRR. A screen resolution isn't attached to the stated frame rates, but it's safe to assume you'll be dealing with worse visuals if you select performance mode.
Hogwarts Legacy launches for PS5 next month on 10th February 2023, but a Deluxe Edition provides three days of early access from the 7th. Most recently, movie actor Simon Pegg was revealed as the voice actor for Hogwarts headmaster Phineas Nigellus Black. Which graphical mode will you choose? Let us know in the comments below.

This game looks better and better the more I see it. Outside of performance related articles like this I do want to go media blackout on it as I'm already sold for a day one purchase.
I hope that the PS4 port is handled with care as well!
Performance mode, obviously.
I’ll probably switch back and forth between modes to see which I like best for the game. It’s probably got enough action to warrant performance mode instead of fidelity. Still, I love ray tracing — if it has some good RT then I might be willing to sacrifice the frame rate.
What I’ve done with most recent games is start in fidelity and then end up in performance mode after I’ve soaked in the visuals for the first several hours.
As expected, it features performance and fidelity. I would probably do at least one play trough on 30fps and the other three on 60fps.
Choosing to play at 30 fps will..
EARN YOU A ONE WAY TICKET TO AZKABAN CORRECT!!!!
Performance mode for me. Gotta fly my hippogriff at a rock-solid 60 fps.
Great, same old tired choice. Here's hoping the next console gen will finally rid us of having to choose between improved visuals or min 60fps when playing in 4k.
If I were to play it on PS5 I would make a quick comparison and see the difference between Fidelity and Performance. If it looks awful in Performance mode, then Fidelity it is...
"Unfortunately" this game looks so good it would be very disappointing to miss out on the gorgeous visuals just to have a smoother image... I definitely want both if I can have them!
Thinking of getting this one on PC to play it at 4k@60fps with high-ultra settings + DLSS (managed to buy a barely used MSI RTX 3090 Suprim X for 875 euros, I definitely have to put it to the test as soon as it arrives : ) )
But I have to see if there are stuttering issues though...
As the current console gen has the "choice" problem, the PC has the stuttering problem especially in newer games due to shader compiling when loading new assets...
Waiting for reviews first and then decide on the plaftorm.
@caiol92 I wish I could go back to feeling like this.
I can barely stand to play games in 30fps mode now and I don't know what happened
Have been playing games for 30 years and played countless games with awful framerates just fine (ish)
@caiol92 exactly same here. 4k and 30fps is fine by me
This game could pull a Guardians of the galaxy.
Resolution mode for me as well on 4k oled should look fantastic I can put up with 30fps as long as no stuttering then all gd:)
While I haven’t been one to care about it too much in the past I have come to love 60fps. I wouldn’t care too much if there was no choice but where there is I now have to go for it.
@caiol92 Same with me. I like to push the visuals to the limit on my Bravia. As long as I have a stable 30 I'm happy.
Performance mode/60fps for me, but I hope it’s higher than 1080p and at the very minimum 1440
I'll do what i usually do..play in both modes but ultimatley i'll be playing the 60fps option..i cant wait for this as i've had it pre ordered for what seems like an eternity..
Why do I want this game so much 😱 I'm barely
what you'd call a Harry Potter fan and this game was hardly on my radar, but an epic intrigue factor has grown since seeing some of the game reveals. I guess I wanted a new fantasy game, and Forspoken has put me off so much the more I've seen of that, and Hogwarts has taken over, and also lapped it multiple times on a broomstick. (Broomstick flight animations maybe look a little sketchy if you look closely, but I'm hoping the overall game is an 8/10)
Fidelity mode and collecting fantastic beasts alone should be a cool enough diversion to make it a fun game world to be in
This game is looking so good, cant wait!
What about the 8k and 120hz settings?
@InternetUser Alienware released a 500hz monitor. Where's my 500hz setting?
In general I prefer framerate and graphics quality over pixel count. I can rarely tell the difference between 1080 and 4k from where a sit even on my 72 inch screen. It may be due to my old eyes. But very rarely do you get a lower resolution high graphic setting choice as standard. My normal approach though is to try out the options and see what works best for me for the particular game. I do hope one day Consoles will enable you to chose your setting in a more granular way, PC like if you will.
As for this game, I'll be waiting for reviews, as always, before I decide if I'll be opening my wallet.
60fps with VRR day 1 - can’t wait to play.
I’ll view both before deciding. Sometimes it makes sense to go with the higher resolution!
Peace to all and enjoy the weekend.
VRR ALL THE WAY!
Its always an easy choice for me, fidelity mode over performance. I don't really notice much of a difference between 30 and 60 (as long as its stable), but I can certainly tell the difference between screen space effects (reflection, shadows, etc...) and their more costly alternatives.
@Shinnok789 I doubt we'll ever have a generation again where there isn't a choice between improved graphics quality or improved performance.
If you're pushing the limits of what the hardware can do, it will always make some sense to push it a little harder in the two competing directions and give users a choice. Those choices at some point in the future will be different than they are now, maybe a tradeoff between true 8k at 60fps with more objects/reflections or lower quality at 240fps, as one made-up example, but you'll always be able to have a trade-off between eeking out a little more performance or a little more detail.
@Shinnok789 got a PS5 and 307 myself. I at least appreciate the choice with modern console games as the 60fps option generally performs consistently in most PS5 games that have it. This game along, with most big AAA titles coming this year will use UE so it’s possible this can be a bad year for PC titles specifically. UE stutter is worse because no matter your GPU/CPU, if game has it, there’s much nothing that can be done to permanently fix it. Game updates and driver updates will just bring it back.
As a huge Harry Potter fan, its looking more and more like a day 1 buy.
I never preorder games. But I did with Hogwarts Legacy this game is like a dream come true!
60 every time. Her indoors is pawing the ground for this one
@Dishonored29 If you’re talking about the shader compilation. There is one thing developers can do to fix the stutter. Preload the shaders during the initial load of the game. Multiple games do this, and even Sony games do this. It just means the first load of the game is gonna be a bit of a wait.
Missed oportunity for "pick your potion".
I always elect for 60ps (therefore taking hit on graphic), but on a uk gaming podcast recently they mentioned that they prefer some games in lower fps for reasons I can't recall. No doubt culmination of features being enabled/ disabled in the various modes. I think spiderman may have been mentioned as one that they preferred the look/feel of the game, atmosphere etc using lower fps iirc. Less crucial for it to be ultra fluid/liquid compared to fps, racing games perhaps, particularly if not playing online.
Performance mode it is, 60fps will always be the go to choice.
@roe I am the same. My whole life I played on 30fps until I got the PS5.
I never thought much of 60fps and I thought 30fps was fine. Now it annoys the hell out of me.
Luckily 40fps at 4k is a very very well functioning in between because I don't want to sacrifice resolution.
A poster here made a great post on how 40fps is actually giving you the vast majority of the smoothness of 60fps despite the number being closer to 30fps.
Every game should give you the option for 40fps. If the most demanding games can offer it then they all can.
@Zuljaras I feel like, if they're able to get this running adequately on a Switch, the PS4 should be no trouble.
Most AAA game can run on PS4-level hardware perfectly fine with some downgrades.
You can choose to not buy this game, and choose not to support a very rich and powerful person who doesn’t believe trans men are men and trans women are women. Not being able to discuss this simple fact—that her beliefs are dangerous and absolutely cause harm and worse—is enabling her. Moderate or close the comments if you don’t feel you have the resources to maintain a safe space for everyone.

@GreatAuk That is demonstrably false. And who’s “we”?

“The disclaimer is there for people who falsely believe“ does not make for a good-faith argument, but I suspect you know that.
Who are “the posters on this thread,” in your mind? Pushsquare’s policy ensures it will be the people who can freely comment on frame rates without feeling the publication and its allowed readers hate them. Must be nice.
🙄 Here we go again
@GoodOlDubs No one hates anyone here.
This is a great community.
Just whack them on ignore @GreatAuk. I imagine all these comments will be gone soon but you just can't win with people like this no matter how logical your replies
“People like this.” I’m a guy who thinks people should be loved and supported for who they are, and I’m the one who’s going to have his comments deleted. I’m glad you don’t have to worry about it. Enjoy your great community (that isn’t trusted by its moderators to comment freely and in support of trans people.)
And I’m sorry if this conversation is boring to some folks here. I get that we all just want to enjoy video games. I know I’ve attracted the attention of dudes who just hope I go away. That’s fine. Their opinions will never change because they refuse to imagine a world that is different than theirs. My sincere hope is that whoever is deleting these comments, as was confidently predicted by those dudes (why so confident?), takes a second to read and think. Maybe even discuss again with your colleagues. There are other models to look at and learn from. It’s possible—maybe even easy—to do the right thing. Thanks for reading.
@roe I'm not a big fan of ignoring or blocking people who are not outright trolls. True trolls, not the haphazard way the term gets applied nowadays to anyone who may harbor a different opinion than the one you hold.
Nothing gets solved in the dark and in a safe space/personal bubble.
It doesn't mean I have to perpetually engage with such a person, but I'd like to be able to respond to and/or see their views. This is another reason why I'm not a fan of heavy moderation. As you say, all these comments may disappear soon when they really didn't need to.
I've been blocked myself right on this board! :/
Anyway, people can disagree amicably. We should be able to do that without the moderators getting involved.
@GreatAuk I mean I think you might be misinterpreting the disclaimer, just a little bit there. I don't think it's there purely to dissuade people who believe Rowling is a transphobe, and I especially don't think it's due to Push Square having the opposite opinion. I think they simple don't want a massive flame war on their hands. They'll just as quickly delete comments that say something like "JK did nothing wrong". They're not trying to dissuade one particular side of the "controversy", they just don't want any part in it on their articles at all
Personally I'll probably get the game at some point, but it's incredibly rare that I buy anything at launch, and not likely in this case
But sadly it doesn't support Trans rights

OFF-TOPIC
Should I be worried that people might cancel me because I do not think that the guy from the movie Tusk, you know, the one on which a doctor performs multiple operations in order to transform him into a walrus, is NOT a biological walrus?
I am lucky enough to own a nice tv but yeah 60 fps all the way. Can’t revert to 30 fps anymore 😭
@danlk1ng Precisely. Wanting to side-step this discussion completely is what I take issue with. Trans folk don’t have that option.
Removed - unconstructive
I still wish a 40 FPS mode would become more common. I loved that in Ratchet & Clank. It is the perfect balance of visual quality and smoothness for 120 Hz VRR displays IMO, at least on my Samsung TV.
Performance mode of course, as much as I'll miss the 4K benefits.
