In the UK's physical charts, God of War Ragnarok ended 2022 on a high, and it's kicking off the new year just as strong. Sony's epic sequel has secured another week in the number one spot. Though the game's figures will be inflated by console bundle sales, it's still a good result for the title.
It's ahead of two other sales juggernauts, with FIFA 23 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in second and third respectively. Both are selling best on PS5, so we imagine they might be popular pick-ups alongside those new consoles. With Sonic Frontiers moving from 10th down to 17th, the remainder of the top 10 is all about those Switch games.
Here's the latest top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 7th January 2023
- God of War Ragnarok
- FIFA 23
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Pokémon Violet
- Nintendo Switch Sports
- Pokémon Scarlet
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Minecraft (Switch)
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

Good for God of War, though the rest of the top 10 remains sad.
10. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Who would've taught a 3-year-old re-release of a 10-year-old Wii U game, the fourth uninspiring sequel in its series, originally released in a year that already saw the release of another NSMB game, would make it in the top 10 of 2023?
Put Mario (or Pokemon) on the box cover and it sells millions, regardless of what it is.
God of g.o.a.t. 🐐 👑 ragnarok.word up son
@Octane I'll never understand it. The 2D "new" Marios are so average and copy-paste.
@RainbowGazelle @Octane Having 100%ed it, I'd say NSMB U is an easy top three 2D Mario game. Even if you're not a fan of the NSMB aesthetics or branding, it's an extremely good time.
Anyway, we already know from experience with Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario that having the character star in a game isn't enough to ensure strong sales.
@RainbowGazelle @Octane Agree with @Ralizah. NSMBU is honestly fantastic and the Switch version definitely improves upon the original. If Nintendo would’ve taken a different approach to the visuals rather than largely copying the visuals for NSMB, I believe the game would be remembered differently. It’s an extremely solid 2D platformer.
But but but TrickyDicky said the game wont sell because its cross gen!!!
In which state is the world when this behemoth of wisdom is wrong?!
Having recently finished God of War Ragnarok, I can comfortably say that it is worth every single accolade and top spot in the charts that it has received. Ragnarok is an absolute masterpiece in every sense of the word.
@somnambulance I definitely do think it's time to retire the NSMB branding. Something that felt more visually modern and stylish like DKC Tropical Freeze would be nice.
@Octane I liked it a lot though felt DKC Tropical Freeze was the better 2D Wii U platformer.
NSMBU Deluxe is still selling well given it's the most recent mainline 2D Mario game. Since the Wii U's game launch there hasn't been much going on with 2D Mario outside of Virtual Console/NSO:
NSMBU Deluxe sales will likely tail off if a new mainline 2D Mario exists sometime in the future.
The best WiiU 3d platformer was Rayman….criminally underrated. NSMBU is a good game but nowhere near as good as Rayman. Loved the music, innovative use of gamepad, mini games…really good stuff. Supposedly there will be a new 2d Mario game released, so maybe there’s hope that they further innovate instead of regurgitate. Still surprised it made the top ten out of the blue like this. If I were new to Nintendo, I would get Mario Kart and Odyssey….
@rockodoodle Yoshi's Woolly World for me, although I'm more partial to the 3DS port. Such an awesome little game.
@Ralizah I have and love all three systems, but the Switch is the one I would not want to do without…even to I am pissed at Nintendo for their handling of Mario Kart……
@rockodoodle couldn't agree more. Rayman was simply superb.
@Ralizah Woolly World would be 2nd for me, would really like to see a Switch port with the Wii U graphics and 3DS extra content like was done for Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition.
If Nintendo would bundle the Switch with NSMBU, it would be number 1 on the list. This says less about the demand for NSMBU and GoWR rather about the effect of bundles on the physical sales numbers.
@Grumblevolcano I'd take another port of that over Yoshi's Crafted World. God, what a disappointment that was!
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Games like Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Woolly World were expertly crafted games that combined interesting puzzles and level design with collect-a-thon elements. Meanwhile, Crafted World is more a game where you waddle around boring environments collecting stuff and interacting with elements in the background. Way less of an emphasis on solid platforming. Also, the music is awful, and the game is never able to hit 720p, even when docked.
Where is this data from? I'd like to see more of the data that is splitting game sales by platform.
@Ralizah I keep feeling like there has to be something cooking for Mario right now and Nintendo’s going to do a surprise announcement, but I could just be being hopeful since it’s been a while since the plumber’s had a new title (I refuse to count the new Rabbids one). It seems bizarre to not pare the movie with a game to sell. Seems like a really obvious cross-promo opportunity to generate sales for both and gives the big N the opportunity to start a new 2D series for the game.
But NSMBU vs Tropical Freeze… they’re both 9/10 for me, but Tropical Freeze has a bit of an edge in visuals. That said, surely there’s a new Donkey Kong game soon too, right? Sometimes it feels like Kirby’s the only big N franchise that has a robust release schedule… and Pokémon.
@somnambulance We got Bowser's Fury in 2021, which isn't a full game, but is fleshed out enough to still be satisfying. I tend to think it was a proof-of-concept leading up to the launch of a fully open-world 3D Mario platformer on the next system.
Mario + Rabbids is great, but those games aren't platformers: if I was going to compare them to anything, they'd be more like a successor to the Mario RPGs Nintendo used to publish.
2D Mario seems very dead, unfortunately, although NSMB U seems to be selling way better than the Mario Maker series, so I'm hoping they'll take this as a hint to revive the 2D line of Mario games. Hopefully with a more ambitious presentation.
As for Nintendo series with consistent release schedules... Fire Emblem has been pretty darn consistent for a long time now. We get a new entry at least once every four years, and often with spinoffs and remakes releasing in-between those.
Wow that is a very casual top ten. Would only play GOW (currently playing) and MK8D (always fun).
@Ralizah Ah, yes, Fire Emblem has been doing quite well. Perhaps it is just Mario and Donkey Kong I’m missing. Honestly, it’s hard to be disappointed in the Switch release schedule since Nintendo has made so many wonderful continuations to time-honored series that it just feels quiet for Mario because his outputs been buffered with ports over new releases, even if the ports are fantastic. Loved Bowser’s Fury, as well. I’d have likely paid full price for just that title, as somewhat barebones as it was. Genuinely curious where Nintendo will take Mario next.
It’s a shame SMM2 is relatively dead these days. The campaign or whatever you’d call it is perhaps my favorite 2D Mario platformer since Super Mario World… and probably among my favorite 2D platformers of all time. Period. It was clever, inventive, and honestly only a quarter of what you can do with the title. It’s crazy to me how many people I know that hadn’t been aware of the campaign too until I forced them to try it.
I’d take a Mario RPG over the Rabbids titles. I just… I can’t stand the Rabbids. The SOCOM style gameplay is fine, but I just struggled to get through the first one.
Well deserved, the game was too much fun.
The rest of the list is an eye sore.
I love how this God of War post evolved into a defending Nintendo in the comments then to what Nintendo games we are looking forward to.
When are these naysayers going to realize that Nintendo makes games that are over and above almost everything else on the market?
I have said it once and I'll say it again: Elden Ring is just Breath of the Wild without all the hopelessness or Need for Speed is just Mario Kart without infinite replay ability.
There is a reason that people still pay full price for these games after they have been released for years. Animal Crossing came out in 2020...let me say that slower...TWENTY TWENTY!! This was almost 3 years ago now and it's still in the top 10. I mean where is Elden Ring...the precious GOTY for 2022 is not even in this chart. Two (arguably weak) Pokémon games are but not Elden Ring.
Even God of War will fall off this chart in another month while we replace it with whatever else is coming out but I will tell you right now Mario Kart will still l be on there.
When did pushsquare start forwarding clicks to nintendo life 🤣
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika oh i know. It was just a tongue in cheek comment based on all the nintendo talk in the comments. All in good humour 👍
@somnambulance @Ralizah I'm glad you two enjoyed NSMBU. For me, it was completely unmemorable and boring. Couldn't tell you about a single level other than the one with the Van Gogh background. Every NSMB game just fuses together in my head; they're all the same. Loved DK: Tropical Freeze on the other hand. And the 2D Raymans were great platformers.
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika yeh thats not me. I have a switch myself. Im in for the games not the brand. As soon as xbox release some good SP games that stoke my interest ill likely grab myself an xbox too. Why lock yourself out of great games to remain brand loyal to a company that just wants your money. 🤷♂️
@Octane and seriously, I’m a big fan of the Wii U, had that game on release, but it is such a piece of *****… It’s crazy that people are still buying it on Switch
@Max_the_German Yes, apart from Shop To (occasionally) and Sony Direct, if you bought a PS5 over the last few months, you had to have a GOW:R bundle.
Pretty worthless list since 9 out of 10 games sold in the UK are digital now.
