The Witcher 3 on PS5 has received a fresh patch, which is available to download right now. Update 4.01 is around 2.7GB in size, and promises improvements to the title's technical performance — particularly for the dedicated ray tracing mode. It also fixes an annoying bug which was resetting options every time the game was booted up. Apparently, this was down to the title allowing too many save files. Whoops!
A bunch of smaller bug squashes are also included. You can find the full patch notes below.
The Witcher 3 PS5 Update 4.01 Patch Notes
Console-Specific
- Fixed an issue where consoles could create a higher amount of saves than their set limit, resulting in various issues with saving the game or user settings being reset.
- Improved Screen Space Reflections quality on next-gen consoles.
- Optimized ray-traced global illumination on next-gen consoles to improve the performance of Ray Tracing Mode.
Quests & Gameplay
- Battle Preparations - Fixed an issue where it could be impossible to interact with Avallac'h during the objective "Let Avallac'h know everything's ready."
- Family Matters - Fixed an issue that could cause the game to crash during the transition to Ciri's Story: Out of the Shadows when speaking to the Bloody Baron.
- King's Gambit - Fixed an issue where it could be impossible to participate in the fistfight with the second Vildkaarl due to an invisible obstacle.
- Wine Wars: Belgaard - Added a retrofix for the issue we fixed in 4.00, where the quest couldn't be completed if the player destroyed one of the required monster nests during exploration.
- A Dangerous Game - The armor in Caesar's room should now change its appearance when the Alternate Nilfgaardian Armor is turned on.
- Axii Puppet - Increased the health and damage dealt by the puppet.
- Adrenaline Rush mutation should now work according to its description.
- Various small fixes to quests and cutscenes.
Localisation
- Fixed various issues with Arabic localization.

- Adjusted Priscilla's lip-sync animation to match her voice-over in Simplified Chinese during the song "The Wolven Storm".

I hope this patch fixes the weird blur during dialogue, also all of the weird square shadows I've seen on boat sails, walls, the ground, and the weird brightness cave walls would have that would flicker
@MordmitTotschlag Updates for CDPR games usually have a lot of adjustments / fixes / improvements that aren't included in the patch notes.. This update hopefully has some as well.
Of course they release it the day after I got platinum and uninstalled it to make way for Harry Potter, Wo Long and all the PSVR2 games I need room for ;P That save bug almost ruined my Death March playthrough, if I loaded the wrong save I would have ruined my playthrough on hardest setting and played on normal. Thank god I noticed!!
So, I tired replaying Witcher 3 with the PS5 patch, and I find myself genuinely disliking the combat now too much to continue. Anyone else in the same boat?
Witcher 3 was one of the first games I ever played when I got back into video games a few years ago, so while I think the story holds up, compared to other games, combat has just lost its appeal to me Haha
Glad I ain't got round to this yet after installing it. By the time I do everything should be ironed out which is nice to know. On a side path Powerwash Simulator last night cleaning that blue van with the most powerful nozzle for the missable trophy was genuinely mentally soothing. Powerwash Simulator has made such an impressive first impression on me personally that it's my goty game so far no joke
I've been cutting through the game for a few weekends now, and the biggest issue I've run into are crashes and a weird corrupted save file.
The game crashes at least twice daily, which is obnoxious when playing, but something I can shrug off for the most part.
The save file glitch however was extremely concerning, as there was one file that corrupted in such a way that the game refused to save any checkpoints or auto-saves for days to follow. I had to manually save frequently just to be sure I didn't lose hours of progress.
And then eventually... the game deleted this corrupt save file on its own (where it originally refused to let me delete it manually), and everything went back to normal.
It's been a ride, to say the least. But at least the game is still fun.
@thechetearly not to the point of giving up, because everything else is excellent but yeah, alternating this and god of war ragnarok was not a good idea! It looks fantastic on ps5, though.
@Feena YES! It does look so so good.
@thechetearly I actually had trouble getting back into the combat when I reviewed it on PS5 — on a surface level it really hasn't aged well.
But I will say, I started to get the hang of it again after a few hours. I don't think the combat is outright bad, but it definitely requires adaptation. It's got a weird rhythm to it, with the dodges and Geralt's long attack animations.
Once I was back into the flow I was fine with it, but I can totally understand people finding it rough going all these years later.
@thechetearly yeah, same here.
One of my favourite last gen games, but I just found even with the PS5 patch it hasn't held up well over the years. The animations, UI, combat. Not good.
Glad in a way....saves me a hundred hours or so of my life going through it all again.
Damn, I got the Axii puppet trophy last time I played few days ago, and it was a pain to get as the puppet became SO FRAIL against other enemies... Sometimes a full health brainwashed enemy died with one hit. Good they fixed that, it was really annoying.
Let's see if the pop in scenery gets better too.
@Cpt-Price RT is glorious. It was very playable even before the patch on TW3. Honestly the way light reacts to you and the environment and how shadows are cast it's just night and day. Makes it feel like a brand new game. No falsely lit greyness to environments that naturally block out light is the most noticeable thing for flicking between the two modes. But the amount of times I've just had to stop and stare at the world now really shows how good a thing RT is.
@thechetearly I had no problem with the combat in Witcher 3 (PS4), but then again, some of my favourite games are Firewatch and Suzerain. Not exactly combat-focussed!
@Cpt-Price yep, in this case it certainly is better (to me) as well. I tried TW3 on performance mode and I really hated the 60fps motion on console for this game. Maybe it's because it's a game I had already played and completed and spent hundreds of hours in on 30fps, but it really felt weird to me. And I play a mix of 30, 60 and 120 depending on the game.
@Cpt-Price it wasn't so much that popular opinion said not to use RT mode due to framerate.
It was that the RT mode was so highly unstable one couldn't even recommend playing it because it woukd frequently crash. Hoping it fixes it but it being CDPR, I have serious doubts in there technical ability to push out meaningful fixes to anything.
how many patches has this received already? sounds like it is a work in progress and will be supported for the next 3 years at this rate?
Still no fix to the crash when saving the game. And no option to disable vignetting or to disable those annoying controller vibrations in menus.
@Cpt-Price the RT mode in Cyberpunk feels surprisingly good. In Witcher 3 the 30 fps feeling unplayable for me.
patch notes:
TOP NOTCH SWORDS
I’ll probably wait for one more patch to start Novigrad again on the PS5 version. My experience wasn’t great the first time around on PS5. PS4 was fantastic though
@MordmitTotschlag the boat sail bug is still there 🙄
Still no cross save from Switch to PS5 and vice versa?
I'm not very happy with the witcher 3 on the ps5..i had a hard crash ( my only one so far on the ps5 in 2 years of use) and i lost all my progress (20+ hours) and the cloud saves dont work..i just cant be bothered to start over again..if they could restore my progress i'd be more impressed than all the ray tracing in the world.
”Axii Puppet - Increased the health and damage dealt by the puppet.”
Finally, now I can collect the last trophies!
@djlard not yet. Switch Version has to receive the 4.0x update first.
I've put about 50 hours into it on the PS5, and have had absolutely zero issues playing on performance mode. Loads fast, plays fast. Exactly what I would have hoped for.
I hadn't played the game since the DLC came out roughly six years ago, and that was on a standard PS4. There were a few bugs that time around, but not bad. I had a TON of issues with the game at the innitial launch, but CDPR seemed to work hard to solve those.
@Reeneman I'll finish it sooner till it recieves (Main game + all side quests finished, I'm in the middle of HoS and than only B&W)
@thechetearly
Are you using the new quick sign casting? It makes it much better. You should turn that on. Also try not just roll dodging all the time. Try doing more parrying, and sidestepping. Makes it funner, or turn up the difficulty, it will make you use more strategy.
