Rumours of a Shin Megami Tensei V port have been doing the rounds for a long time — even dating back to before the game released on Nintendo Switch in 2021 — but they've been revived alongside the announcement of the series' 30th anniversary event. Said event will take place on the 5th and 6th May in Japan.
Now, it wouldn't come as a huge surprise to see the likes of Shin Megami Tensei V jump to other platforms. After all, this is modern Atlus we're talking about. A subsidiary of SEGA, the Japanese publisher has been pushing for broader appeal, bringing games like Persona 5 Royal and its predecessors to all current consoles in recent times.
What's more, references to the PS4 were spotted in SMTV's code, and that alone was enough to spread the fires of speculation.
The only issue with this ongoing rumour is that there's no real evidence to back things up. We've tried tracing the whispers to their origins, but there's not much to see. It's mostly just forum posts and social media "insiders" making unverified claims. One specific rumour even said that SMTV was nailed on for a PS5 and PS4 launch in 2022 — but that was obviously nonsense.
Again, it could happen — especially if Microsoft is paying the way with another Game Pass deal — but we wouldn't get your hopes up just yet. As always, we'll have to wait and see.

I’d love this to find more players but I won’t get excited till it’s official and not some faceless rumour any random could have made up.
Please, please please. I cannot get through this game on Switch. It really hurts my eyes a lot.
Would love this to be true but I have a feeling they have an exclusivity deal with Nintendo. Why else would they only release it only on the Switch?
Most of the older SMT games launched also on Playstation.
It’d be nice for more players to experience, but I have to say some people are really overdramatic with how “bad” it runs on Switch. Saying it “hurts their eyes, it’s unplayable, it’s shocking!”.
The game runs fine, I think you guys need to get your eyes checked lmao
@Constable_What are you being serious? It looks fantastic on Switch lol did two playthroughs of it and never noticed a problem. It's one of the better looking and running Switch games too so this is an odd take
Alright we don't need to turn this comments section into some console mudslinging contest. Let's try to stay on topic.
Wow, I was almost going to comment "but the Switch version hasn't even come out, yet".
But as I read further I realized it...did. I'm usually on the up-and-up on Nintendo releases (regardless if I care about the game or not), but I had no idea it was released back in 2021.
Well...uhm...neat. I think.
@ItsATM That's great you didn't notice anything. I did. It shouldn't be too odd a take, it seems a pretty common one to me, but I don't know what circles you run in.
Completely disagree that it looks and runs fantastic, and I'll leave it at that.
Very likely at some point as Persona lost PS exclusivity last year and most Switch 3rd party exclusivity deals are timed, even MH Rise came to PS/Xbox.
I'm game if it's an enhanced version with new story/gameplay elements to it. If it's a straight port, I'll probably pass, since the game runs fine on my Switch and I'm not paying full price for trophy support.
@GamingFan4Lyf You must not have watched any Directs in
2021. Nintendo pushed SMT V pretty hard leading up to release in its livestreams.
@Sil_Am Persona was exclusive to Playstation for years without evidence of there being some sort of exclusivity deal. Atlus just had the habit of releasing certain series on certain platforms. When SMT games were going to PS2, they didn't go to GameCube. When they went to DS/3DS, they didn't go to PSP/Vita. But Sega has been pushing hard to make them a multiplatform developer, which is why Persona games are on Nintendo and Xbox and SMT V will likely follow suit.
I really hope it gets released on PS4/PS5.
I hope this is true. It's kind of annoying how the mainline SMT games have been locked in Nintendo consoles for awhile now. I mean, SMT IV released in 2013 only on 3DS when PS3 and 360 were readily available
@Ralizah That's the thing, I did. I guess it's because it's just not a game series I follow and just kind of tuned it out or forgot about. 🤷♂️
Well, the more the merrier!
i have a feeling this will indeed receive an enhanced release on ps4/ps5, including new content and various quality of life updates. sucks to be an early adopter of atlus games, as we now know all too well.
Hopefully this game gets ported to all modern platforms (Xbox Series X|S and PS5) plus PC and not just PS4|XBOne.
@ItsATM @Constable_What
I'll say this: despite being satisfied enough with the game's technical performance, SMT V is absolutely stunning at 4K/60, even without higher res textures.
I think the game is perfectly enjoyable as is. I also think it absolutely deserves to also release on more powerful hardware that can do full justice to its strong art direction.
I'd love for this to be true. I had originally intended to get it on switch but the story being even worse than IVs which I already thought didn't really have much of an engaging story, and with 3rd parties going multiplat every where. I decided to hold off
It worked out for MH Rise please let it work for this
I'd be somewhat interested if this really does come to PS4/PS5 but the story in SMT V was pretty weak according to multiple people.
Sure, if it's ported and has additional content, I'll gladly triple-dip.
If it's just the same game with no new content, I'll pass.
@Constable_What Me too! I was hyped but can't play the 20fps slide show, it gives me a headache!
If it is in May, then that would be a 1 1/2 year exclusivity period for Switch, which I could see.
I really enjoyed SMT V on Switch despite it having some issues and would pick it up again on PS5. The game would benefit from being playable on more powerful hardware, it pushes the Switch to the limit
@Ralizah I have the game, I should just emulate it for that performance. I know it has potential to look amazing.
SMT V was one of my top games of 2021. It was a bit of a shame that there were some resolution issues in the overworked, but otherwise it was a very beautiful title. Not sure if a graphics and performance bump would be enough for me to play it again but I'd certainly be tempted.
If I recall, it was on the GeForce leak, so I guess it's coming, since most games on that leak have been announced.
I fell of this one as switch is so frustrating. Would defintely buy and play on PS5
I hope this is true. This game has been stuck on trash hardware for too long. I own this on Switch, but it performs abysmally on there.
@ItsATM @Itachi2099 The game looked and ran bad on switch. It would be nice to play on a system that could do it justice. Don't let my or others opinions from personal experience with the game bother you so much.
@NEStalgia I was disappointed by the performance. Sent it back to gamefly after a weekend.
Well Persona 5 Royal came to Switch so I think it’s fair that SMT V comes to the PlayStation consoles as well. Also thrown in Xbox and PC as well for getting a SMT V port.
I honestly wouldn’t mind if SMT V comes to PlayStation, PC and Xbox.
I would love this since I don’t really play my Switch much
I have played this one on the switch and it runs amazingly well, I hope it got 4K on ps5 so it justifies buying it a second time lol
If we Will it into existence it will happen, it’s a long game so I’d like it to come out between big games, maybe July or August would be good for me!
@Constable_What If you own it, I don't really see what the harm would be. Although the game apparently has multiple graphical issues on Yuzu.
The game's resolution is dynamic and the framerate is uncapped, so I'm hoping there'll possibly be a sizeable performance boost right off the bat if the next console is backwards-compatible with Switch hardware.
If Switch 2 runs this at 720p60 off the dock, this is getting a second 100% playthrough.
@ItsATM And you're just being delusional lol Yes, the game's art direction and visuals are well executed. But the performance it runs in? Can't say the same and it being on the Switch, only hinders the potential of it.
PS5 remaster/port would be awesome, though I still need to play thru the first 4 games.
