One-time top-dog of the console game Atari has announced the acquisition of more than 100 games from the 80s and 90s, which sounds totally tubular to us, dude, and includes fun throwbacks like Hardball and Demolition Racer. But when buying so many IPs, there is always the chance of a real stinker sneaking through. Case in point, Atari has officially acquired Bubsy 3D, one of the most cursed games ever made.
Developed by Bend Studio (then known as Eidetic) for the PS1 in 1995, Bubsy 3D was the team of eight's first console title and their first effort in 3D. It was awful, regarded as one of the worst games ever made, most notable perhaps for the overwhelming negativity it elicits in its players. Electronic Gaming Monthly remarked, at the time: "Pretend your controller is filled with mud—this is how Bubsy plays."
With an awkward camera, cringe-inducing dialogue, and unresponsive controls, we'd be willing to bet this means some kind of remaster or (shudder) remake is being floated in Atari HQ right now. Attempts have been made during the intervening decades, such as Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back, to try and make Bubsy a thing, and it's just not happening, guys; the Bubsy ship sailed decades ago.
What are your memories of Bubsy 3D, did you ever play it? Relive the bad old days with us in the comments section below.

There’s at least one Norwegian that will either be excited or disappointed by this news.
So there will be another new Bubsy game on PS5 ?
Well they didn't buy these for nothing. I guarantee a fair share of these will make it to console via a port of some sort.
Would be fun if they did a self aware comedy adventure game about how washed up bubsy is. He could be trying to desperately make it as an influencer and degrading himself into the seventh circle of hell
A bit brushed over in the article,but the 100 retro titles cover old publishers like Accolade, Microprose, Infogrames etc. Seemingly ones this or one of the previous Atari iterations sold off but seemingly reacquired again....in tandem with their recent acquisition of Nightdive Studios.
As to how many end up on console as opposed to being on GOG with different publisher branding now time will tell.
What could pawssibly go wrong?
Have they acquired Bubsy, or specifically Bubsy 3D?
I actually never played Bubsy 3D but I played his whack games back on the SNES and Sega Genesis. One of the worst characters and games out there. 😑
AHH. I needed that.
The recently bubsy games were ok. Seriously.
@NinjaNicky Glover was weird but it did some cool things for it's time like being able to walk on a ball and using said ball to jump higher but overall it was a terrible game haha.
I did play Bubsy 3D and it was absolute dross but I have such fond memories of a 2D bubsy (I think on the sega mega drive) where you could play 2 player. You were able to choose to either play friendly or feisty and I had laughed so much as I dropped banana skins whilst my friends tried to do the platforming.
Good times or rose tinted ones, who knows. Point is, if they bring this series back it is best left to 2 dimensions!
I wasn't previously aware of Bubsy 3D so I just googled it and OH GOD, MY EYES!
@Robocod Perhaps the Nightdive purchase and now this will mean a Bubsy 3D "remake" 🤔
@Sequel That's a genius idea! It could also be kind of like Conker's Bad Fur Tales but where Bubsy wakes up after a 30 year drinking binge.
You and I need to speak to Atari!
I had the original Bubsy on my Atari Jaguar. It was the same as the SNES/Mega drive version. Crap.
I remember a friend of mine trying to outdo me by getting Bubsy 3D to show off his brand new PlayStation. 🤣🤣🤣
This article is sensationalised nonsense. Sorry to say.
They bought 100 of their classic IP. Not just Bubsy, not just Bubsy 3D. Bubsy was just 1 of them.
@AndyKazama I think from what I'd seen on twitter they did tout having scope to create new/ rebooted versions alongside the original versions, it'd need something radical to set it apart from the other newer Bubsy games already out there.
Probably be cheaper to port the 2D ones over!🤔
The irony I found was there's a new "Microprose" out there,(having bought the name),but seemingly this Atari now owns their most noteworthy IP's! 🙄😅
Hardball/4th & Inches & Test Drive are all examples they could revisit/reboot as much as Bubsy though I doubt the younger players out there would even know about them,nevermind play them! They might’ve had Atari versions back in the day,but were also as common on other systems like C64,Amiga, & probably Apple too!
Still images of this game look super cool, like some retro art that a college art student whipped up in Blender. I’m sure the game sucks, but I love those colors!
People really need to learn how to make profit with their games nowadays. If you want to make money, don’t try to profit off selling one of the worst games ever, get a good game like „Alien vs. Predator“ for the Atari Jaguar (it will still be rather cheap) and sell it on Steam. It is a low risk, and the franchise is one that people love to collect for.
I mean, they brought back Shaq-Fu and Devil May Cry 2 keeps getting remastered every generation. Anything is possible and fair at this point.
@Sequel
I would love to see that. Give it a Conker’s Bad Fur Day sort of vibe.
@__jamiie
I’ll join in as a third.
That sounds like a genuinely fantastic idea. I’d pay the full 70 bucks for it.
They could also use the game to parody trends in the modern industry. Like have Bubsy throw a complete fit that he needs to buy microtransactions to have a chance at leveling up his influencer score.
Had Bubsy 3D when it came out and it was just as terrible as people say. Literally no redeeming qualities. If they release it on PS5 I will buy it though.
Well Atari hopefully learned their lesson from ET & won't make Bubsy 3D worse than it already is.
To quote a famous nerd "I'd rather eat out the rotten ***** of a roadkilled skunk than play this game again!"
@OrtadragoonX Fidelity mode can be PS5 standard graphics and performance mode can be the original PS1 graphics.
We're onto a winner here.
@NinjaNicky The "problem" is the article singles out an infamous entry on one of these 100 IP's to make it sound negative. In short, it's bait.
@iamtheju
I have a physical copy of Bubsy 3D that I got for free and I still want my money back so no I am not buying that on PS5.
@PegasusActual93 Wish I had kept my copy just for the fun of it. Bubsy 3D and Croc are the games I should have held on to the most.
I bet if it came out today, Pushsquare would give it a 7.
I've never played Bubsy before, so hold no opinion.
I remember getting this back in 1997 before I got an N64. I was desperate for a 3d platform game and convinced myself that this could fill the void until I got Mario 64.
How wrong I was. What an ugly, soulless, joyless mess this was.
However thought going for higher resolution over actual textures was a good idea needs their head examining
@Eagly I disagree, people aren't hard enough on it. It's abomination. The devs knew themselves when they saw Mario 64. It's without merit unfortunately
Lol wow, that brings me back 🤣 The Official Playstation Magazine was even harsh about it.
It seemed odd to me but then again most of the IPs they acquired I wasn't too familiar with than Bubsy and another one. But then again if Bubsy 3D was better worked out (wasn't rushed and had textures, had worked things out more) it would have been as good as Gex. Sure both use outdated references and talk a lot but still.
I'm fine with even the revivals of Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy among others by Embracer it's great to see they had some great elements to them but only if you actually care about B/AA games of such eras that's the thing most people stick to AAA when there is great out there.
Then again Rascal is a game with besides the tank controls because of the publisher even though TT games didn't want it so they had to implement it, bad camera too but the game is really good in level design and creativity. 60 FPS PS1 game, some awkward boss decisions for sure and but otherwise the creativity and lacking title screen to pose 3D models there. TT games have people that are talented but their Haven Call of the King like ambition most people don't care for either so not surprised.
Also do people forget Bubsy games came out the 2D platformer and the runner one? No oh ok then. Besides you can make Bubsy quieter in the platformer. Even the character in Demon Turf you can make quieter.
