MultiVersus will no longer be available to download for new players and has been temporarily removed from digital storefronts like the PlayStation Store. This move might come as a surprise for those just following along at home, given that it was a detail squirrelled away in last week's Open Beta Update.
We knew that the free-to-play title would be going offline in June, which was something that caused some consternation amongst early adopters and the title's most dedicated fans. The hardcore will, of course, have had the game installed for months, but it is an unusual situation, all things considered.
Online play will still be available for players with the game currently installed up until the appointed 25th June date, but the whole situation seems like a nightmare for the developer, Player First Games, to navigate. It remains to be seen whether players will be keen to return after so much time away, with the 1.0 launch expected in early 2024.
What do you think of the whole MultiVersus situation? Are you still a true believer, or has this train already left the station? Open a whole can of worms in the comments section below.

once i remembered that the game was still a beta, none of this is a big deal at all anymore.
its literally just a trial ending for one of the longest betas in history
@nomither6 a trial WarnerBrothers wanted people to spend $99.99 on
I still am pulling for the game to make a good comeback. It's a solid game at its core. They just need to get everything surrounding that core in a better place.
Everything about this game feels like mobile, and mobile never makes sense at all.
I'm rooting for the game as is the only really polished alternative to Smash, with all those months they can easily add at least 10-15 more characters with more modes and more polished gameplay.
Heck I wouldn't mind if they just straight up copy and pasted most of the Smash mechanics, modes, and movesets 🤷
@NEStalgia what are you talking about? It actually plays and runs pretty decently. It also looks pretty good for the type of game it is. Do you want Mortal Kombat graphics?
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy I didn't mean the graphics, actually, just the whole development and business of it.
@Juanalf The only polished alternative? You clearly haven't played Brawlhalla.
They really need to add more stages, many of the 8 or so current ones are just platforms or no platforms and that's just boring.
@NEStalgia what do you mean? It feels very much like another studio's take on Smash Bros.. battle passes are annoying but commonplace unfortunately, just like premium and.. extra premium currencies to unlock skins and characters. Normal for a free to play. What part is mobile that's different from other games with currency and unlockables? League of Legends?
Could be worse - could be Nickelodeon Brawl which sends a normally quiet PS4 Pro's fans into meltdown! Unoptimised garbage....?
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy If it's like another take on SSB, it's a more mobile, freemium take. You say it's normal for a free to play - F2P crap is what makes something feel like a phone game. You're actually agreeing with him but where he says "mobile" you say "F2P," as I guess those mechanics have been normalised for you outside of mobile gaming.
It's like how Dreamlight Valley is vaguely like Animal Crossing but is definitely a mobile gaming take on it, with battle passes, energy bars, paying to beta test it, etc.
Lol.
Once again. Games like this are best avoided. Terrible business model designed to hook you and take your money. There is no reason they can’t let people continue to play. Especially as they charge people money. If it had of been a free beta it’s different.
Disgusting.
@nomither6 It was not a beta. Game has been out for a year. This is just a marketing ploy hoping to get an initial boost on the next release. It isn't going to work. Game simply isn't good enough to keep people invested long term.
@Korgon agreed. its a super fun Smash competitor imo, and they have a pretty massive bank of characters to add.
@Jey887 I reckon it'll be DOA when it's relaunched as most people would've moved on.
@Jey887 that’s what i really think too . it’s not a beta , this was the actual game & it was low effort indie garbage
@Savage_Joe has Star Citizen even got to Beta yet?
@Savage_Joe
Looooool true about dayz
@Savage_Joe wait? DayZ isn't in beta anymore?
So I already downloaded it thank god. So after the 25th of June. Will it automatically delete and when it's getting released again do I need to download or pay it again or will it forever stay on my console
@Janp07
I'd assume that if you've paid for it, then the next version will be "free" or discounted in some way. Devs aren't normally that much of a t$@t. It was called a "beta" too, so it would be unfair to charge again for the next version, in my own opinion.
As for it being on your console, it won't delete itself, but from the wording of the article, the game just won't function (at least that's my understanding), but anything you've purchased is always in your collection, I have PS3 games I can download that have been delisted in the past.
@SolaceCreed oh that's why this game was free, I just downloaded it because it was free. So when it getting released I need to pay it then. I wonder how much different it will look like more characters, a story mode idk
RIP temporarily, looking forward to seeing it come back from the brink of death in 2024 hopefully.
